    That is an amazing price!

Too bad on the credit card surcharge.

Price match with Sony, I just got my price match request approved.

      • Don't forget to stack CR 10% cash back (no cap atm) and targeted Amex Sony $50 rebate that just came up today.

      • How long did you have to wait for the price match ?

        • The first one took me less than 30 minutes but my other request for the 24-70 GM2 has been pending for a while. They are pretty inconsistent these days.

          • @eecan: You used the form both times? Or the live chat?

            • @y2k: Form, usually if I am in a hurry I talk to them over live chat and it generally results in a quicker response but not always.

        • +1

quite fast within 10 mins, did using live chat.

  • One of the best lens 🤗

      For heavylifters

  • Might jump if it was the 200-600 - already got the tamron 70-180mm

Price match at Sony and use the 10% cash back that's pretty much on all the time

    • Where is 10% cashback "pretty much on all the time"?

        • Are they honoring price matches without an epic battle?

          • +1

@Flyerone: If that was your concern I guess you could have just said that upfront?

Never had any issues myself and have done 10+ transactions for Sony with them. Have seen plenty of less favourable accounts from others though so I'm sure there is the potential to.

            • @eecan:

If that was your concern I guess you could have just said that upfront?

It's only part of my concern. I guess I only ever looked when I was in the market for something, and it was always 2%, and then if was 10% it only lasted a day or so.
I do however, recall quite a few people complaining of difficulties getting the cashback honored. (myself included) I remember they actually added it to the conditions then removed it but were still being tight.

              Anyway, we'll see what transpires.

              • @Flyerone: Ah right yeah, the 10% is usually ever only for a few days at a time.

          • @Flyerone: Yes I've price matched + get cashback like 5x now, the most recent just a few weeks back got approved and paid out

    • +2

Cashrewards declined my pricematch. The cited, "invalid due to code or gift card."

This is dodgy because there are no comments regarding pricematching on their terms and conditions.

      • +1

Who is the new Ozbargain rep for CR since @tightarse left? Maybe they can help - though my gut feel is that even though it's not in the Ts and Cs, they have some other way of not honouring…

      • I got approved after price matching the 35mm f1.4 lens on Sony in jul. No issues. Weird everyone experience is diff here

  • Amazing deal. Nothing like it for the price.

    • surelly the Sigma 70-200 DG DN?

      • The Sigma weighs more like a standard 70-200 2.8 whereas the Sony is ridiculously light. A few hundred grams might not seem like much but it really makes a difference when using it for an extended period of time e.g. shooting a concert and if you're carrying multiple lenses. If we want to put it into perspective the Sigma (1345g) weighs closer to the Sony 300 GM (1470g) than the Sony 70-200 GM2 (1045g)… Sony has completely ruined my expectations for the weight of lenses with some of their recent releases.

The Sigma is also limited to 15fps (probably limited by Sony firmware rather than the lens being not good enough) whereas the Sony GM2 is capable of 30+ fps (A1, A9III).

        • i feel like if you're just an enthusiast doing non-paid work it's going to be heavy either way and there's no way around it.

in all honesty, I don't think pros would actually care about that 300g difference. The 70-200 focal length is a direct replacement for a bag full of primes already lol.

          • @dukeGR4: The 70-200 GM2 isn't heavy though, that's the point I was trying to make. It crosses the point where I will happily shoot with it handheld with my eye basically in the viewfinder for hours feeling no fatigue whereas a normal 70-200 like the GM1 I would prefer to reach for a monopod/tripod if it was practical.

Pros may not care about the 300g difference but they will care about the difference in fps.

Oh and there's also teleconverter support, the Sony ones are pretty ordinary but you can get good results with the 1.4x + 70-200 GM2.

  • Absolute phenomenal lens, been using mine for the past (nearly) 2 years. Great lens ! Paid $2500 for mine at the time from Sony store with 10% cash back

    • How did you do the 10% cashback?

      • some shopback offer was on at the time. Sony stores can process that in-store too via the QR shop back code they have in store .

    • Which store offered $2500 (ie who did you match with?)

      • +1

I'm assuming he meant he paid ~$2750 and got it for ~$2500 after cashback because it had hit that price point a few times previously. I don't think I've ever seen it hit $2500, this current deal is the lowest price I've seen it advertised for.

    Delivery kill it.

Just as good a deal on the FE 24-70 f/2.8 GMII $2051.28

    • Damn, that is just as good. Where the hell are these prices coming from lol

      • +3

I think the economy is so tanked, people aren't buying.

  • +4

The 24-70mm GM2 is also at an all-time low. $2051

Ouch! These 2 lenses really hurts.

Sold the 24-105 some time ago thinking that fast primes would do. But sometimes missed the flexibility of a zoom lens.

Really tempted to get the 24-70 and see how things go.

  • +2

Just as amex sends a $50 off $350 spend at sony offer this is no good for the wallet

    • Too tempting!!!

Anyone know if the 5%/10% sign up offer by Sony (limited to new customers from today, 20 August) is valid for people in the same household eg spouses, siblings? I know the Ts and Cs say it's per person, but I'd prefer to avoid arguing with some poor contact centre contractor if they've left it out.

    • +2

You won't be able to apply the code to a price match item though.

      • Ah, you're right. It specifies the discount is only on "current advertised price". A bit more transparent than the cashback companies, at least!

        • Plus…. it already expired? At the top:

          Signed up between 10/07/2024 - 19/08/2024

Which is weird because further down it has:

The Welcome Voucher is only for new Customers who create an Account in accordance with the MySony Terms on or after 20 August 2024.

          • @Buy2Much: I just got a 10% welcome voucher for an account I created to hold a price match for what it's worth. Obviously won't be able to apply it to a price match though.

  • Any good way to try these lens out ?

    • +2

Go to a camera store if they have display stock? If you have a Sony store they have let me try lenses in store before.

    • Keep in mind Sony also has:

*The 30 Day Love it Or Your Money Back Guarantee is available for customers for a maximum 2 products per year for purchases from Sony Store online

I think this is the source of Sony "refurbished" items ;-)

      • I don’t have that kind of money actually but would save up if the lens is amazing.

  • Can I understand how a 70-200 differs from a 28-200 when they have the same max zoom lenght, like what makes this different to have a $2k+ price?

    • +8

Better Glass, Native Autofocus, Fast Aperture, focus rings, aperture rings, buttons etc,

If you dont know why you would get the sony 70-200 gm over the Tamron 28-200 then you don't need it

      • I didn't know that I wanted the 28-200 till I got that either, hence the question.

      • +1

        Adding:
        * better Bokeh rendition
        * better build quality
        * faster autofocus and better performance in low light
        * better resale value
        * better lens coatings and flare resistance

Basically better in every way except price, weight and focal length.

This lens type is a mainstay fast telephoto zoom for portrait photography (and can double for many other subject types) and is designed to handle use especially by professional photographers who require a robust and reliable lens.

Some photographers have a trinity of fast lens to cover a lot of general situations ie. wide angle 16-35mm, standard 24-70mm, 70-200mm or similar and compliment it with more niche lens depending on subject type.

The 28-200mm is a jack of all trades but nowhere near a master of any except versatility in focal length in one lens. A travel lens where you do not wish to carry several primes or heavier and better performing zooms.

You can look up examples on Flickr, 500px, etc specific to both lens.

I have used several lens from Minolta, Sigma, Tamron and now Sony in this aperture and zoom range and they are so versatile. If weight and/or cost is an issue there are always the Sony 70-200 f/4, Tamron and primes such as 85mm, 135mm, etc.

    • Mainly aperture (amongst other things).
The 28-200mm has a variable aperture. For example, when you zoom in at say 200mm, you'd only be able to open it up to f/5.6 at most (slower/darker).
If you do it with the Sony, you can still be at f/2.8.

    • It is not just the focal range and max aperture values of a lens either. On a GM lens, prospective buyers look for excellent optical qualities (corner to corner) throughout the entire focal range and at every single aperture setting. These lenses are not build with one but 4 fast linear motors for quick autofocus response. Then top it off with water resistance, internal zoom, optical stabilisation and best in class performance to weight ratio.

It is one of those things where, 'if you know, you'd need it' kinda thing.

      • Add no firmware limits on framerate, better image stab. But competitors in many cases offer almost the same for - 30%-50% price.

  • Damn just paid 3.4K a few weeks ago!! NEVER would have imagined this one having a deal like this!

  • Can anyone recommend a bargain for Sony 20mm F1.8 G?

  • How do people get price match with Sony? I am so tempted to replace my Tamron 28-75mm with 24-70mm gm2, no reason, but why not?

    • Sony website chat

      • I tried, let's see. It was off-line at the time
