@Buy2Much: Is the Canon R6 II much better or only faster if R8 has the same image quality? I was hoping to try better quality glass as lens retain value whereas the cameras do not. And read Canon hasn't let other manufacturers make lenses for rf mount?
I do want to try new mirrorless lenses but was tempted by Sony due to Canon and Nikon lenses being so much more expensive.
Or should I be choosing camera system first instead of going for lenses first?
@JL1: You won't go wrong with any brand as they are fairly competitive so it is a matter of personal choice. Noting that Canon R FF series are the only FF still made in Japan and have 5 years warranty, the longest of all brands, therefore retain their values pretty well within the warranty period. I have upgraded cameras several times within warranty and not losing too much $ (passing my buyers the receipts for warranty).
FYI r6ii vs r8
@Buy2Much: I was considering Canon or Sony as something different to what I used to shoot (Nikon) but now thinking if I should get Nikon and reuse some old primes I have around. Nikon Z glass so expensive though. One advantage I read was that it is easier/possible to adapt other brand lenses onto the Nikon compared to other brands due to the depth of the mount? Eg. Not sure if Nikon lenses could work on Canon r body?
Yep too had r8 doesn't have IBIS, which is something I really want. I read Canon and Sony have much better AF than Nikon but don't know if Nikon has caught up with the Z6iii or not but that's a lot more expensive than the Sony or Canon equivalent now.
I am tempted by what I read about R6 Mark II and its AF but I just don't know if I can afford to use L glass! Camera wise and the 5y warranty are big pluses to me in addition to the resale value like you mentioned even though I don't trade up often on gear. Canon lenses I assume would retain value very well.
One reason I wanted to jump to Sony was the A7IV and the big discount on this tele which I find more useful than a normal zoom but haven't thought too much besides having cheaper lenses than Canon and Nikon or Panasonic Lumix!
@JL1: If you get the Canon R, get the Canon RF to EF Adapter which works very well including the electronics. There are tons of cheap but good quality EF lenses of various brands on eBay/Gumtree, especially now that people are migrating to the RF mounts. Sigma EF mount tele lenses are plentiful and cheap too.
@Buy2Much: Yeah that's the good thing about mirrorless to be able to get adapters for older lenses! Still thinking whether it's worth going Nikon just to use a few manual focus primes I have or go a completely new system!
Do older lenses autofocus just as well with adapters or native lenses are much better in that regard? Canon EF lenses probably still quite expensive though compared to Nikon F mount lenses due to popularity of Canon or am I mistaken?
@JL1: I have used the Canon adapter and it was just as good for native lenses. Some reviews online went as far as saying the native lenses perform even better than on their original cameras due to better electronics and processing on the newer R cameras.
This hurts. My bank account cant handle another purchase. Already bought the 35mm 1.4 and 50 1.2mm this year. Please god. Stop.
Priced matched with Sony. Cash back tracked $242.12 (Cashrewards). Total $2421.16 delivered. First GM lens. On back order but hopefully won't take long.
I recall vaguely that the cash back is based on when the payment is actually taken, which for the back order on this lens won't be till the end of the month at the earliest - when the 10% cash back is gone (it ends tonight). I've hunted through past Sony threads and can't find it though. Does anyone recall anything on CR about this?
No too sure. I used afterpay and the payment was taken at the time of purchase.
How long does price matched item stay in your cart now? For my old price matches it stays for months. However, when I price matched this time, the email says it will be valid for 2 weeks, did anyone have experience on this? Did Sony change it?
My recent price matches got cleared after 2 weeks too.
Yes, I asked the Sony staffer on the phone today when doing my price match and she told me it would disappear on 29 August. I then received my price match email stating the same thing.
I got my price match request today, it took them forever. I missed the cashback offer. Would probably wait a week to see if something comes back. Only 2k CR and 3% TCB ATM
10% cash rewards is back for Sony but now the Ts and C's specifically exclude the 70-200 f2.8 by name!
Wtf, seems like digiDirect just upped their prices, there goes my dream of getting a new system! Does anyone have a screenshot of the previous price I could use for price match? Should have done it earlier just in case, sigh.
Maybe more people buying it than they expected, thought it was part of their birthday sale.
Yes, $2999 now! Maybe they got Ozbargained, though I would have thought most would have tried dodge the Sony price match to dodge the credit card fee and have a crack at the 10% cash rewards
Yeah I think everyone on Ozbargain would price match at Sony and not buy from them. Other people might just buy directly though if they don't try for cashback.
But it was more than the advertised 20% discount for Sony, I wonder if someone did the wrong maths or more backorders than they liked so they changed it. It did last for 2 days before changing. But yeah all Sony lenses went up in price and not just this one. Others I looked at also went up like the 24-70mm 2.8.
Well there goes 2k that I didn’t think I was gonna spend this week. Will need to sell some other lenses to free up space and funds lol. The price jack and the 10% Cash back finishing tomorrow gave me fomo
If anyone needs a screenshot of the digi price. Let me know and you can try price match in store at Sony.
I've sent you a message, thanks!
Seems Digidirect is on back order for the 200-600 with 1-2 months wait……Thanks Global Supply Chain!
Standard of digidirect to not have stock for items they sell.
Should have ordered via Sony, DigiDirect:
Your order for Sony FE 70-200mm f/2.8 GM M2 Lens is currently Awaiting Stock.
ETA is to be advised. ETA is subject to change.
Once we have the tracking information, we'll send it to your email right away.
Thank you.
Same story with Sony. ETA is 11/09 but my experience is that they've pushed the ETA back before. I once had it pushed back 3 times and finally received the order 2 months later
I was given an 11/09 ETA too last week for my 24-70 2.8 order. Just reached out again and got this:
"Based on the date of order possible it can be allocated on 31/10/2024 arrival at the warehouse. Please be advised there is no guarantee yet if the order can be allocated."
Annoying as I was hoping to get it beofre October so I could use it on my trip. But oh well
@GrabOzB: It absolutely is annoying considering the store has now removed 'backorder' suggesting they have current stock
@penguinswillrise: I can still see the backorder messaging. Fingers crossed it comes earlier
@GrabOzB: 12/09/2024 and no updates yet :(
@penguinswillrise: Looks like shipping date is now 31/10 if it doesn't get delayed again
My 70 - 200 GM II got delivered today. What a lens!. Looks like Sony has received stock.
@csmacd: Great, mind if i ask what was your order date and when you were notified that it's been dispatched?
@penguinswillrise: Order placed on 21/08. Received notification via Auspost app. No emails from Sony and their site appears to be slow to update…
@csmacd: When did the auspost notification come through?
@penguinswillrise: Last Friday 20/09. Delivered overnight to sorting facility (ACT) the next day (Saturday) and received today….
@csmacd: Sweet thank you!
@penguinswillrise: Just got my tracking as well! Glad to be getting it earlier than expected!
@GrabOzB: Nice! I got the 24-70 so maybe a different batch, fingers crossed :)
@penguinswillrise: Got my dispatch notification!
Got mine last week, now to see if Cash Rewards will honour the 10% cash back that they showed via the automated email (this was before they changed their terms and conditions to specifically exclude this and the 24-70!). With the Amex cashback, this could bring it to $2371.16. Won't find out till end of November, but it's still showing as pending in my CR account, so fingers crossed!
@y2k: Got my 24-70 this morning, that's nut if they dishonour - looked at my screen recording and that exclusion was not there when I made my purchase.
@penguinswillrise: Yes, they only added it after the 10% boost expired. In late November we should all revisit this thread and see if they (falsely) claim that condition was in place.
I not only screen shotted my transaction, I recorded it, including the terms and conditions. Even the most devious company will find that hard to dispute with Fair Trading NSW etc
@y2k: Yeah good idea, mine's to be confirmed on 25/11 so have set a reminder to check in.
Same. Original date was 11/09. Now its 31/10. Guessing no chance of an earlier delivery? A lens like this for a price like this worth the wait I guess. Sigh!. Hope Sony won't push it back again…
Bang for bucks for hobbyists would be the Canon R8 (sub 2k) with r6 II AF and image quality. Their STM lenses are affordable and quite decent in image quality for the prices. Sigma will be releasing some affordable RF lens too (atm APSC first, no doubt FF will follow) https://www.sigma-global.com/en/contents/sigma_rfmount_lense…
Otherwise Lumix S5 II is not too expensive and plenty of L-mounts lens from both Lumix and Sigma (affordable).
