Anyone try the Aldi premium beans/ purple bag?

    • +6

Yeh the Lazzio Luxe Blend (Purple bag) are really good. I am on my second bag and they have a bit more complexity than the medium ones I usually get (though the medium roast is still so good for the money..)

      • +1

You mean you normally get the Lazzio Medium beans and tried the purple ones?

        • +1

Yeh that's right. I usually go either the the Lazzio medium beans or the slightly more expensive Brazil. Both work well for me with my La Pavoni.

      • Second. The Luxe ones are amazing. I use a grinder to put it into reusable pods and feed it into my Lavazza pod machine - Beautiful coffee.

      • +1

I've tried them once - disappointed. Medium or dark roast Aldi beans are better or the same and much cheaper.

    • Haven't seen these at my local yet, how much does it cost?

      • +2

        I think around $22/kg?

      • I saw only Ground and only one pack on a different from all coffee shelf.

IMHO, this one is average for Lavazza, the other types are better. But it is still much better than any Lazzio.

    • +4

I tried them and thought they were nothing special and weren't as nice as their country beans (Brazil, Columbia, etc). They were preferable if you bought their regular mystery bag mediums.

    • +1

The Luxe is nothing special, possibly a higher margin product leveraging the reputation of Lazzio Medium. Taste is obviously subjective.

We go between Aldi's Lazzio and Grinders' Giancarlo, the later is noticeably better. We just got a bag from Costco for $20/kg with best before Aug 2026, I take that means roasted in Aug 2024.

I actually like the ALDI in-house brand of coffee beans that are almost half the price of these..

Is Lavazza twice as nice as the ALDI Lazzio coffee beans?

    • +4

I agree. It is not twice as nice. I prefer the Aldi brand, which is fresher than the Lavazza coffee made in Italy.

    • -4

Half the price? They’re the same price for 1kg?

      • $14kg/kg for medium

        • Oh I was thinking of the purple packet - thought this was an extension of that thread!

lavazza are doing a lot of promos at the moment at many stores, so good chance to try if you haven’t before. wish they did the woolies promo where it came in a tin and was 40% off again. Good thing is with the cost of living if you have a coffee machine it’s cheap to enjoy coffee vs cafe at $5 cup.

Even without a coffee machine, a French press is significantly cheaper, more forgiving on grind settings and much easier to clean up.

$25-$50 for the French press - plenty on sale at Bodum, Amazon, Myer, David Jones
$20 digital scales from Ali or eBay
$290 Breville grinder if you don't have another grinder
$60-$65 Airscape 1kg to keep beans fresher - Campos makes a nice green one, otherwise black or white
Filtered water however you get that - Brita, etc.

      How to make by James Hoffmann;

The only thing I would add is to preheat the French press and your drinking cup(s) with hot water which you then throw out (clean out your drains) before you brew and before you pour.

Don't pour grounds down the sink unless you like paying your plumber's kids' private school fees. Don't put them on your plants (that is an old wive's tale).

All up, under $1 a serve. Of course, if you want milk, you'll need a frother. Sugar or no sugar to taste.

      • Or a moka pot.

Coffee, pizza, physiotherapists - everyone has their best option but it's all personal preference. 😃

Moka pot is my preference for home coffee. I like that it's distinctly different from the coffee in a cafe.

But tied with the theme of Daabido's excellent comment, you can get a decent one between $50 and $100.

Are they suitable for seasoning my kafatek?

Just bought the 500 gram bag of these beans a week or two ago from Woolies for $10, grabbed them because they were half price and we weren't near an Aldi. They were stale and dead, and on our Breville smart grinder we had to turn it to setting 1 or 2 just to try and get a decent shot. Zero crema. Normally with the Lazzio beans the grinder is on 11 or 12..these Lavazza beans just seemed so stale and lifeless. Id prefer even the dark Lazzio over these. I hate chucking things out though so we are using them up, blending with the Lazzio medium at about 60/40 blend. I do NOT recommend these Lavazza beans.

  • Lavazza beans have had an huge price increase in the last few months. This is the cheapest they've been for ages but I used to be able to periodically buy them on special well under $20 until about 3 months ago.

This has been the best price since then however.

Pretty average beans, Harris are better & cheaper atm on Amazon https://amzn.asia/d/4Oa0vNj

    • -1

No way, these beans are awesome. Harris in comparison has almost no taste.

    • -1

How many days/weeks ago were Harris beans roasted?

      • yeh i find Harris to be crap

        vittoria i also find crap

        • I find Harris Strong to be slightly less crap & at a cheaper price.

      • Same as Lavazza but at least you can actually taste the coffee.

Here for the stale comments and not disappointed.

    • Here for the boring comments.

    • +2

Nope, been using these beans from Amazon for 6 months. They taste great.

  • +1

i know everyone disses lavazza but I'm very happy with it. i drink long blacks, no sugar.

been doing prime s&s for ages, getting 1kg around $17-18. I go through a kg every 3-4 wks so it works for me.

the ridiculous price hike though is a bit much to handle though. local fruit shop had them for $20 so stocked after that might have to find something new in the $20ish margin
