[Refurb] Lenovo ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Dock (40AC) with 135W Charger $50 Delivered @ DY Computers

720
DOCK29

Hi Everyone,

We've got a good number of these docks available for anyone who is in the market for one. These are refurbished/used units, but to be fair apart from a general surface clean, there isn't much of a refurbishment process. We've tested each port on every unit we have to make sure no duds are being sent out. We've also tested them with multiple non-Lenovo laptops: Macbooks, Dell XPS 15, Dell Latitude Models.

Please Note: No Thunderbolt 3 Cable Included

Thank you.

    Original charger?

    • Yes

      • How does this compare with 40AF - solid for office application and no issue running 2x 2k monitor at 60mhz.

  • does it support dual display (DP+HDMI) on a M1 Pro MacBook (that natively support dual display)?

        ah bummer. thanks mate

"I've got the 16" MBP with an M1 Pro and I can confirm it doesn't work. It can only do one display with the dock and the second display I have to connect to the HDMI port on the laptop. Also the sound on the dock shows up as an option but also doesn't work."

          RE the sound control

Apple refuse to support sound control via HDMI. There are some hacky work arounds you can google, essentially tricking macOS to think HDMI is a Displayport, some people have had success but I haven't been able to get it to work.

          • @xavster: Does that mean sound control works cos DP?

          • @xavster: What the? Don't support hdmi properly? The whole point of having hdmi is that it includes the sound

No Apple device supports multiple display outputs from a single cable, due to their lack of support for DisplayPort MST (Multi Stream Transport).

      • +2

Pro, Max and Ultra M series does support multiple displays from a single cable on other thunderbolt docks.
eg I have an M1 Pro MBP and it drives dual 4k @ 60Hz via a single cable using the Dell WD19TB dock, while also using the laptop display (or you can run it closed if you dont want the laptop display on).

  • Does the power button work on other brands laptops?

      Nope

    HDMI maxes out at 4k/30.

I love your honesty rep. Good work.

Worth pointing out that these, unlike some Dell and HP docks, won't fall back to USB-C alt mode on a non TB laptop (e.g., AMD.)

    • Wut? Is that even allowed as a part of the spec lol?

TB3 really was an incomplete spec. I feel your comment needs to be added to the post haha.

OP I have this dock and it didn’t work with my MacBook Air M3 + 2x monitors - any tips?

    • You need display link app

      • You also need a displaylink dock.

    • What do you mean "didn't work"?

If you want to drive two external displays, you need to close the laptop and connect one of the displays to the downstream TB3 port.

      • Thought I might get pulled up for insufficient details!

Just tried it again to confirm - When i first plug in the Mac with lid open:

        • Both external displays show the (empty) desktop clearly for about 2 seconds, then one of them goes dark
        • when I close the lid, both external displays are on but only one is detected in Settings > Displays, and both externals show the same thing (ie. mirror mode, not extended)

Can this do 3440x1440 @ 144 Hz on DisplayPort? and please tell me its native and its not the DisplayLink stuff

Do not buy these. They are rubbish. Ive had endless trouble with 2 of mine and they will not help with trouble shooting. Monitor blinking and all sorts

Sorry, Need to clarify, i am talking about Lenovo not OP.

      • +1

I had a problem with this, I needed a 100w USB-C cable or something like that which seemed to solve it

        • +1

You need a proper TB3 cable.

A cheap C-C cable will not work.

        • I used the included lenovo one as it was brand new?

  • thanks OP, ordered 1

    shows $79 for me

    • There’s a code…

    • Code is in OPs post

  • My workplace uses these (older ones) on all desks across all sites. The red base ones are not that compatible with our laptops for some reason (HP and even Lenovo). There are others with just a black base and those work fine without issues. They only have 2 DP ports though.

  • After having used a range of USB-C docks from various brands (Dell, Lenovo, Acer, generic), with various laptops (Dell, Lenovo, Acer), I've come to the conclusion that generic, cheap docks are the most reliable. One of the few cases where cheaper=better.

    • I've had trouble with so many docks, can you suggest a cheaper model you've had luck with?

      • Currently running a U-Green. Get the cheapest on amazon oe ebay or similar that has the ports you need. If it has issues, you haven't wasted much on it.

      • You need to provide what device you are trying to use with the dock, as there can be compatibility issues particularly Windows vs Apple.

      • I've been using a hp usb C dock for years. They work great across a range of windows laptops. I reckon you can get second hand ones for about 50 bucks

We use these docks at work and we constantly have issues with them. Monitors (connected via HDMI or Display port) connected to the dock would suddenly turn off. Randomly stop charging the laptop or slow chargers the laptop. One of my co-workers got zapped by the USB- C connection and we have two instances where all the peripherals connected to the dock short-circuited. Nothing against OP but these docks are terrible.

    • cheers for the review appreciated!

  • Will this allow my Ipad Pro or Macbook Air (2020 model) to be docked? Only have one external monitor. And are TB3 cables cheap to get?

  • Sold out

  • Can you add some more in stock? :(

I have found issues with old docks and win 11.

Not saying its the case here, just be aware there might be some compatibility issues/quirks

  • We had these from work. Works perfect with Lenovo laptops however had all sorts of trouble when the missus tried using it for her HP work laptop ie display kept disconnecting or no display at all using different ports. Wouldn’t recommend for anything else outside of a productivity hub with your work device if it’s Lenovo branded.

  • Just a quick question regarding docks.

If I have a laptop that has its own separate charger. If I bought something like the UGREEN Revodok 206, to connect it to two monitors is all I need to do is connect the HDMI and connect the dock to the laptop and thats it? Or does the dock needs its own power as well? Or does it get its power from the laptop thats connected to a charger?

    Hope this makes sense. Thanks

    • Get a dock / hub that has "PD" (Power delivery) support built in, that way you plug the original USB C power adapter into the dock/hub and only one single cable gets plugged into the laptop.

      • So if it has PD 100 - does that mean I need to get a 100W power adapter? Or can I simply just use the laptop charger into the dock? - I assume the laptop charger is like 65W or something.

  • Missed out :(

  • Mine just arrived and tried to connect to my Dell 12th gen work laptop. I think I need a better usb c cable as it's not picking up either monitor and says slow charging. Using 1 x HDMI and 1 x DP.

    • You sure your USB C cable is thunderbolt (able to transfer video)? It cant just be any USB C cable, the ones for charging your phone wont work.
