  What makes a whistle sport specific? The football ones seem to have a ring and the basketball ones don't, though they both accept lanyards. Why though?

    They have a different pitch. Basketball whistles are tuned for indoor arenas and football whistles are generally louder for outdoor conditions

  My favourite indoor ref (volleyball) whistle is the Fox40 pearl - a slightly lower tone - $15.45 delivered from eBay.

  My other whistle is for Rugby - the peerless Acme Thunderer 58.5. Hint - don't use indoors…
