It's not a next-gen release, that would be the PS6. Pro consoles are just a mid-get spec bump.

  • +3

Reminds me of the Sega Saturn launch days (overpriced compared to Ps1)

It would be a full circle moment (and funny) if the switch 2 does a ‘Sony 1995 - lower cost $299 drop mic’ announcement.

    • +3

I got my Sega Saturn off a Big W clearance rack for under $200. I will never forgot the excitement I had when I found that when I was a kid. Still have the console plugged into the TV.

      • Ah lucky you
It is a great console with some gaming gems IMO.

VF2 & SegaRally were the first 2 games I witnessed running on the console back as a kid.

Such massive graphical leap and impression from the prior generation (mega drive) has yet to be matched for me to this day.

  • +5

I feel really sorry for anyone that falls for this scheme by EB.

  • +11

Can't see why anyone would think this is a good bargain

    • +1

      Why exactly this is not?

    • +4

You've been a member for half a minute and haven't contributed any deals.

  • +12

The bar just keeps getting lower with the EB Games greed. Soon you will be expected to trade in your TV, fridge and wife just to get $100 off the new PlayStation.

    • +6

Link to deal please. Got the wife in the car now…

      • lol

What do they do with the Wife?
Take her to a day spa, tighten some stuff and sell her as CIB refurbishment?

  • Do they accept PS4 games for the trade in?

    • keen to know this too.

    • They haven't specified on this trade deal so you should be fine to do so

      • I don't think so. They would usually limit games that are worth more than $10 when trade in to be redeem as eligiable

        • In those cases they say you need to trade "eligible" titles and generally state the $10 minimum, I expect this will be the same as the PS4 -> PS5 trade deal which allowed any games from last/current gen.

  • I just had to google to figure out what level 5 was, as I haven't made an EB purchase in 5 years.

    I can't believe it's only the top 10k users.

    I'm only level 4 :(

    • and that level 5 expires every year.

      • It was painful when I realised that, after having opened 20ish tabs on the topic.

Even though I haven't gamed in many years, I still felt somewhat desperate to try and be eligible for the pro anniversary edition. It's probably for the best, I already have too many bills. Lol.

I was also curious to see how many 🥕s the 9,999th user had before the roll-over.

  • Well it's a deal, a good deal. No.

  • Are there any known problems with the original disc ps5s where this trade in could become a new machine and warranty instead of having to repair or buy a base ps5 again?

    • +5

It's been almost 4 years since launch and no major hardware problems so we're in the clear for that type of thing

      • I've had mine since launch and while it's still working the thermal paste will eventually get ruined and the PS5 won't turn on.. I experienced this with my PS3 and I just want it to work .. reapplied thermal paste. But I think the CPU is fried. As such consoles will naturally degrade.. but I'll hold until a PS6 trade in

  • +1

    Thank you for posting.

  • +6

No, we're not doing this again.

  • +10

PS5 Pro with a disc drive and vertical stand totals to around $1400. You can literally buy PC that has 4070 Super for around the same price https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/867389.

It's not a meme anymore. If you really want high resolutions and raytracing, you should literally buy a PC for same amount of money.

    • +1

I've got a PC as well but prefer console gaming for the most part - less mucking around to make things work properly. That gaming PC also doesn't come with keyboard, mouse, monitor (I know, console doesn't come with a TV but most people have one already).

      • +5

I don’t see what’s so difficult about making a PC work for gaming. It’s never been more straightforward. The PC can plug into a TV too, and every gamer would have a compatible controller already, and if they’re upgrading from a previous gaming PC then a keyboard and mouse too. Personally, I think console gaming has lost a lot of its plug and play advantage with all the mandatory updates; it’s no longer a case of simply sticking the cartridge/disc in and playing like it was before.

        • +3

I jump on my PC maybe once a week to game with some friends and it seems almost every time there are driver updates, game updates, security updates. Even if I leave Steam running it doesn't seem to download DOTA2 updates for some reason.
Console games need to install now and sometimes get patches, and you get the odd OS update but it's pretty rare for one update to break something else.
And same argument with having accessories already applies to console upgrades - with this deal, I'm trading in my PS5 and getting a newer version for ~$750 which would not come close to getting me a competitive gaming rig.

    • +1

Is that 4070 build gonna run games at 4k120 with RT? I doubt it.

  • +8

Lol they're pulling an Apple, minimal upgrades for more money.

  • +9

    Totally garbage pricing

  • +3

    Ouch. 🫤

  • +5

    Plus 4 games? lol.

  • +7

I don’t see any deal here.

    • +11

Yes, I see what you're saying but this is a "Bargain" site, not a "Pay outrageous price for an incomplete console, and give us your complete console and some good games for the worst deal of the year" site.

      • +4

Ah well, let's be angry then.

I do think the need to come up with 4 games to trade in is a bit crap.

  • +7

    Trash "deal"

  • So frickin annoyed at the L5 only for the 30th anniversary pro bundle. If there’s any L5 out there that would discuss a fee or something to try and help me secure one I’d love to chat. Should be open to all members. These items are for long time fans. Give us all a shot.

    • +2

Anyone who's interested in taking a fee instead of keeping it for themselves would be more likely to just buy it themselves, keep it boxed and sell it for an extra grand.

  • +11

    Why are people mad?

You’re getting $500-600 for a 4 year old console that most would have paid $749 for.

    • +7

I think the majority of people are mad at the price of the console and inadvertently mad at this “deal”.

    • +5

Yeh no idea what people are mad about. The trade deal is actually pretty decent. The pro bundle behind l5 is absolutely scummy. Looking at marketplace you can’t get much more than $600 for a ps5 with a few games anyway. So this is pretty fair.

      • +3

Less hassle too, private sales. Waiting for ppl, not turning up or those that do trying to haggle you pulling out $100 less cash and wasting your time.
        Been there done that.

    • +3

They'll then sell that console refurbed for $720 lol

      • +3

Doesn’t change what you’re physically able to sell it for. So either get $600 at EB with 0 effort or about the same on marketplace. It’s pretty reasonable.

        • +2

+4 games….. everyone is skirting around that issue.

          • +1

@Tamagotchi Breeder: It’s any 4 games. Can literally pick up games for $5 and they’re valid.

      • Yes but that's what a business is.
Not to mention that each store will have to hold onto dozens of Ps5s that they'll have to clean and potentially troubleshoot before trying to find 100s of buyers interested in the old model.

    • +2

Yeah I think the trade in value is pretty good, especially if you can get some games to include on the cheap. It’d be good to find out what the deal is like if you don’t provide the games too. For past console upgrades you could often not trade in a controller for example, and the hit wasn’t too bad.

What’s bad is the PS5Pros pricing, but that’s on Sony. Not sure I was expecting much more from EB on a trade in offer. They have to work with the going prices of a PS5 and PS5P, and there’s a big fat premium on that Pro model.

      • +3

When I rang, I was told $370 base price for the PS5 and $32.50 base for each of the 4 games - which don't have a minimum trade value, just have to actually be able to be traded in. Definitely worth picking up some preowned games for $5-9 to get the advertised deal.

        • Yep, that sounds like the better option for sure then.

Is there a minimum value on those games that determines if they can be traded in.

          • +1

@Smigit: Can confirm no minimum value requirement, at least at my local EB when I called them. They did say the 4 games need to be PS5 though.

            • @vakarian32: Agree, My Local EB confirmed this as well, any ps5 game is good.

  • +2

    WTF is level 5???? ahahahaha

  • +1

never shop at eb, but what exactly is required to get level 5?

    • +3

Spending about $10k a year at EB. That’s not even exaggerating.

      • +8

holy shit lol. who is that stupid… how many of the 12300 units is AU and then EBgames even getting? couple 100? surely they wouldn't even have enough clowns for that clown car?

    • I'm not sure why you wouldn't shop at EB if you were after gaming ewyipment, they price match and are the only physical store that actually accepts the returns of games.

  • +13

$600 plus your perfectly good PS5 plus 4 games for a minor spec bump? Lmao

    • +3

Right? How much of an improvement will people actually perceive? Probably f-all.

    • +7

The Sony idiot tax, don't forget the disc drive as an addon 🤑

    • Have you checked the Facebook marketplace?

  • +3

Got two consoles one on 2.30 firmware and one 4.5 i think 🤔. Things are going to heat up in the scene soon i hope.

  • -1

    This is not a deal.

The trade in games are from a set list of titles.

  • +9

One of the worst deal in the gaming history

  • +11

You could bet your bottom dollar there will launch day stock almost everywhere at this price point. This isn’t going to be anything like the PS5 was. There’s absolutely no reason to pre-order this console. We won’t give you a stand but here’s an extra TB that you probably won’t even need. Oh, you buy discs? Burn them.

    • Just like the PS4 Pro wasn’t sold in the same numbers as the PS4. It’s not meant to.

  • -5

I will register a Negative Vote as well for not informing members in the first place that you needed to be Level 5 in order to preorder the PS5 Pro 30th Anniversary.

They should have informed this before 31/08/2024 when Level 5 membership was being finalized so people can make an informed decision whether to get themselves to qualify Level 5 or not. Now people are feeling robbed of having to wait only to be told they can't preorder it literally 1 day before the launch day.

I also don't like they are limiting this to Level 5.

    • +4

Dude the PS5 30th anniversary wasn’t even announced then.

    • The Anniversary Editions hadn't even been announced then though. Also imagine if you'd gone and spent an extra $1000 or so on store credit to try and get level 5, and still missed out because others did the same thing?
I agree it's crap to lock it behind level 5, but then people aren't happy about JB's ballot either, and if bots got them all that would suck even more.

    • +1 for this guy, only because he sounds just as butthurt as I am regarding the Pro Anniversary edition and Level 5.

  • Any 4 games?
can i go to cashies and grab 4 of the cheapest games?

    • As long as they are PS5 games and aren't titles that have gone Free to Play like Rocket League, they should be fine.

      • +2

no, you are wrong, any 4 games, no need to be ps5 games

        • +1

Where did you get this information from?

  • +6

I don't like the PS5 and I like the Pro even less. But credit where it's due, EB could be paying you a lot less, this deal in itself isn't a terrible offer when you consider people like me mate Callam who got his PS5 for 630 odd, I paid 750 years ago before it went up too, I have no interest in the Pro but as a level 4, it'd be 600 to upgrade so they're giving me 600 for a 3 or so year old machine and some cheap shitty games, could be a lot worse, a loss of 150 over 3 years, 50 bucks for every year I've had the thing.

  • +4

This is the first PS5 im not ipgrading too.

Sorry but this tech should be 750. The old PS5 is old tech. This constant wild price increase every 5 mins is ridiculous.. and no disc drive? For double the price? Yeah cool. I hope it flops softer than a 90 year olds bell end.

Oh, and 4 free games.. of course, since i cant play them anymore.

I will never, and i mean neverr buy a discless console. If that is alll thats sold i will stop playing and not some weak ass internet threat. Legit.

  • +7

Terrible value, you could sell it all separately for more and then buy a ps5 pro.
But I'd say you'd have to be mad to pay $1200 for a ps5 pro without a disc drive or $1380 with a disc drive (which you can never find).

I have the money to buy this but won't do it just on principle. If we buy this it will send a message to sony that they can charge whatever they want. Watch the ps6 will be $1500 with no disc drive if we enable this behaviour.
    Vote with your wallets.

    • +2

      Feeling the same.

I can buy it (tempting) but to what end?
I have to zoom into the screen to see whatever perceptible visual upgrades?

I fear that most are focusing too much on fps/ fidelity as opposed to the reason to play games - FUN and engaging games. Games are for Fun foremost, not how many hairs are flowing on Sephiroths head or Barrets bum.

Nintendo will likely dominate once again anyway - I hope they do.

Microsoft (or another new player) should step up their efforts and put up some stiff competition to Sony. That’s the most effective way to balance the economies and bring innovation/ Value to the player.

      • +2

Exactly i couldnt even perceive any visual improments and stand is extra $$$ too!
I'll wait till they drop the price like they did with PSVR2 when they realise no one is dumb enough to pay their out-of-touch pricing.

    • +1

Same, I think i may just upgrade my GPU instead as the games i was going to buy a PS for are coming to pc. There is of course GTA6 around the corner but id probably buy a series x pro for that if there is one as it will be newer and possibly better value.

    • -1

      The Playstation 2 was a $1000.

$100 in 2000 is equivalent in purchasing power to about $169.95 in 2022, an increase of $69.95 over 22 years. (according to officialdata.org)

That makes this less expensive, in a manner of speaking.

  • -1

buy it quick casue those bots are going to buy them all up and sell them for 10k at christmas

  • -3

    EB is rip off.

  • +7

my launch unit cost me $750 and they’re giving me $600 for an almost 4 years old system (Level IV), CeX is giving $518 store credit and about $4xx.xx cash.

Doesn’t seems bad, but, EB and Sony are the devil for OzB.

    • +1

True. People saying it is bad and down voting eb when the problem is Sony itself

  • +7

Sorry $1200 for a console with no disc drive (+$159) and no stand ($50) is insane - don't forget to pair that with the $339 controller for the "true Pro experience" = $1,748.

That's before any games or PS+ sub.

  • +1

Yeah I am waiting the long game for the Pro console, way too expensive and as someone pointed out can literally get a gaming PC for that price

  • +4

I’ve been waiting for ps5 pro to move from ps4 pro. But I was well surprised with the increase cost and less than massive upgrade. Just gonna get ps5 normal disc and wish I did it last year, I thought I knew better and waiting was gonna be worth it, I was very wrong. Probably get a good ps5 price around Black Friday

    • yeh dude, you messed up. the ps4 pro was the originally meager upgrade, but at least it followed normal economics like replacing the rrp while the older original reduced.

the ps5 has been the real ps4pro this whole time cause theres barely a real ps5 catalogue and the m2.ssd load times has been the biggest console upgrade of anything of any generation by a mile. just find yourself one second hand. i've seen them for $400-500 heeeeaps, that way if the pro does prove to be more worthy, you'll have good resale on the cheap ps5 you got and the pro over a short time will come down or be on sale for something a bit more sensible i rkn. would bet the realm of $800-1000 within 6-12m.

      • Got my ps5 slim disc yesterday from jb hifi for 575 with ps4 pro trade in. I’m happy enough
