[WA, Refurb] Beam Solo E-Scooter $299.99 Pickup @ Beam Solo

1260

First time posting, found out that Beam was selling their scooters after ending their contracts with cities. Essentially a unfoldable Ninebot G30 for a big discount, but from looks of it only available in Perth left. Be aware of battery degradation but build quality is good apparently.

                @classicspank: Here are the Photos

                • @classicspank: thanks for posting the photos.
If there's a new 551Wh battery then that's a great deal! Is there any way that you've been able to verify if a new battery installed? I'm guessing a serial number somewhere will give some indication?

                • +4

@classicspank: As you can see in the photos there are quite a few paint scratches & scrapes but I can't fault the scooter, seems to be mechanically/electrically sound. The display works fine, you can swap between 3 different modes (Economy, Drive & Sport), the speedo works and the battery capacity display is fairly basic which shows 5 horizontal bars when full. The headlight & tail light are operational and can be turned on with the main display. In my opinion, they are worth $300. Both my kids & I will definitely get our money's worth out of these and I am confident they couldn't damage them if they tried. Probably be able to sell them for $300 down the track if I choose to upgrade.

                • @classicspank: Looks ok to me. As long as battery and wheels are fine. Excited to get mine in couple weeks!

          • @Do I NeedThis: If that's a new 551Wh battery then that's a great deal! Is there any way that you've been able to verify a new battery installed? I'm guessing a serial number somewhere will give some indication?

            • +1

@MrMiser: I couldn't tell of they installed a new battery. they just gave the scooter. Just like @classicspank the scooter is all scratched and looks used but works fine.

        • Hi Mate any update?

      • how much did you pay?

        • I paid $300 for each one.

  • ok , thanks for the information . cheers

Looks like the model is Ninebot SNSC 2.3, will confirm after picking up.

    Model details:
    https://joeybabcock.me/wiki/Ninebot_SNSC_2.3

    • Just picked up. It’s the older model with no suspension

      • how is the condition and did they repaint to a different colour?

        • Cosmetically, they are all in a pretty flogged condition. Not painted. Looks like they have just been picked up off the streets and sold as is

          • @rza: that's so bad. do they give you chargers and other accessories?

            • @RichardF89: just a charger and a bit of paper with battery warning info

      • Yep also picked up. They did have some with front suspension. Asked for one and was denied, and given the version without suspension. Will use it for the weekend but think I might return it. Unless someone wants to take mine off me.

        • +1

what is their return policy like?

          • @rza: I don't know but I got one too and am going to return it on Monday. There has been a couple of fires in beams Canberra warehouse from batteries charging.

          • @rza: Just processed a return transaction on their website and picked a slot to return. Doesnt specify any reason why they'd decline a return other than if it's modified etc. Not too happy with not receiving front suspension and dual brakes

      • +1

The model without the dual brake levers and without front suspension should have a sticker on the side saying SNSC 2.2. The 2.3 is the model with dual levers and front suspension. The battery is likely to be the same on both so they can pop the battery out and throw in a charged one. The suspension is ok but not a huge upgrade, the semi solid airless tires do a little for bumps. (I have a 2.3 from the sell off batch in Tasmania - they were upgrading their fleet to the newer rental scooters)

        • how much did you pay?

      • Was the pickup location as per the email? Thanks

  • Got one. Thanks op

  • What was the news story that beam did something dodgy to the councils or something? That led to the contracts being cancelled? Can someone fill me in. I bought one 😀

    • They have been under-reporting their fleet numbers, leading to the contracts being cancelled. Happened just this month in the ACT.

  • FYI new slots available.

I plan on DIY respray of the scooters as a project, anyone seen any step by step tutorials out there?

    • let us know how it looks and share the photo once done. I'd love to respray as well .

    • based on other's comments they will respray to a black color.

      • no respray for the Perth ones

      • +1

        mine wasn't sprayed

  • Can someone who picked theirs up today post a picture of the condition the scooter is in, cheers.

    • Pretty shit condtion. everything is scratched and chipped.

      • If it's not too much trouble care to share a pic?

          • @frondono: Oh damn that is indeed very beat up…. I know it's used but I didn't expect it to be that bad. Surprised its even working in that condition.

            • +1

@umoddbro: Pff yes it's banged up but it looks perfectly usable. If anything it demonstrates that these things can take somewhat of a beating without issue

              • +5

@Ezekiel2320: Yeah not really sure what a lot of people are expecting. It's a rental escooter with at least 9 months of use and abuse; it's going to have cosmetic defects and a lot of them.

I picked mine up yesterday and yes there are scratches and little chips taken out of the base, paint stripping off in places etc. but it works absolutely fine and $300 for a unit I'm not afraid about being a little rough with myself I'm stoked.

  • Wonder how long the refund will take if you decline on pickup?

  • +3

    What a rollercoaster

  • thanks for all the update my pick date is next Tuesday. I may cancel my order based on the comments. Let's see what happen on Monday for the returns

  • +2

Does anyone happen to have a screenshot from Wednesday showing the specs for the $299 model? I thought front suspension was listed as an inclusion?

  • For those who picked up, is the pickup date/time flexible? I'm booked for Tuesday 12pm but I am most likely gonna have to go earlier in the morning/evening or next day.

  • Sold out everywhere, but can go on a wait list

  • Has anyone actually returned theirs?
Anyone get the susspension model? If yes, how much did you pay?

    • I haven't picked my one even the pick up time has been passed. I contacted beam solo they said: our Beam Solo e-scooters have suspensions so you do not have to worry about that.

    • +1

Got the suspension model. Paid the original price. Picked up today. There's wear and tear but they're built like a tank.
They only have one out at a time when you go collect. The dude was pretty good at explaining everything.

  • +2

I picked up today, it is the suspension and dual brake model. I paid $300. The scooter is in OK condition overall (some chipped and flaking paint, purple colour with beam logo, but the stem seems to be new with "beam solo" printed on it), I'm happy with the way it drives and is built like a tank as others have said. As long as it doesn't catch fire I'll be happy with the purchase ;).

    • can you please share a photo?

    • +1

Picked mine up also has front suspension

      • I was supposed to pick it up at 12:00 but I came at about 3:30, someone told me it was closed and asked me to pick it up tomorrow. and only the suspension version was left. So if you haven't picked up you will get a suspension version.

  • +1

Picked mine up today. Suspension model and came with a brand new motor. Stoked with it, a bit of peeling paint and scratches, but that's to be expected.

Built like a tank. I expect the scooter to last.

    • That's awesome to hear. New motor? Or did you mean new battery?

      • +1

Likely new battery. Got the same today.

        • that is one hell of a deal if that's a new battery in there! A new battery alone would cost $200+ (I guess a lot cheaper for commercial).
I've got to wait another week until I pick mine up so hopefully they'll still have ones with front suspension; and install a new battery .. pretty please!!!

        • How do we check if it's a new battery?

          • @umoddbro: Unfortunately, there's no BT connectivity so can't check via the app.

The only way to know, for sure, is to open up the battery compartment and check the codes on the battery itself - although that may not have anything useful! A post below by classicspank shows how to open the compartment.

I guess that if one is able to get to a speed of 25Km/h, and the battery lasts for 30km or 1 hour (guessing!) then it's a good battery.

        • +1

Nope, new motor. I had to wait about 15min as they were still getting the motor on. Not sure about the battery.

    • I was worried that Beam would offload the best ones first so I chose the earliest possible time slot to grab them which was last Friday morning. Absolutely devastated that they ended up getting rid of the suspension models towards the end as I would have preferred those instead.

      • Your logic was sound, and i was thinking that myself but perhaps they had less of the non-front suspension model than they thought and then had to still fulfil on the $299 orders.
I missed out on getting an early slot and ended up getting a slot for next week.
Absolutely no idea what I'll be getting now… or, if my order gets cancelled due to not enough available!

        • +1

The Beam rep that I met yesterday said they had about 100 scooters to refurb, so I'd be confident that you won't miss out.

          • +1

@Ahhhhyep: I still can see beam scooters on the street. and some with a seat so definitely more scooters.

  • +2

Anyone had any luck trying to open the battery compartment? I found the following YouTube video that shows how to do it but you need a key/tool to open it. Anyone with a 3D printer keen to knock one up and see if they can get it to work? I'll be happy to buy one if they can make it.

There is a design for the battery key on this website and it also has the downloadable design for 3D printers.

The 2 tools you need to remove the 4 screws are a T20 Torx Security Bit & a H4.05 Pentagonal Bit

    • I'm going to try once I find my hex bits. I read somewhere that you can use an allen key and a locking wrench to pop the lid.

      • +2

In the comments section of Scootertalk website I posted in my previous comment I believe someone was able to get it open with an allen key and shifter. Given I've got 3 of them and I'll probably have to remove the cover a few times as I plan on repainting them, I thought I would lash out and get a proper tool. I've emailed a guy on marketplace to print one for me. If it all goes to plan I'll post the details here and others can approach him to buy one if they want.

      • You will be hard-pressed to have a pentagonal bit in your kit. I've got a number of torx, torx security & precision screwdriver kits and I didn't have one so I bought a couple of different kits off Amazon hoping to find the right bit which I did in the Amazon link above. Good look though.

    • I can print one if you're in Perth. I only have PLA filament - hopefully the twisting action doesn't require too much force.

  • Canberra slots appear to have opened

    • Bought one - assuming it doesn't set fire to my house I'm keen

    • They sent me a message that they were back in stock, and I ordered one. The price that I paid was $349.99 at 11:15 am, the website now says $399.99.

  • +1

I just picked up mine they got the non-suspension version again. and they tried to give me the non-suspension version and I argued a while and got the suspension version. The suspension version condition is much better than the non-suspension version one.

    • How hard did you have to press the issue?

      • I said it showed include front suspension when I purchased it. and they checked my order date and said they updated the webpage on 25th and they gave me the new model as I ordered it on the 25th. I think most of the people here ordered it on the 25th.

        • If you don't mind me asking, what time on the 25th did you order?

          • @MiKaDo: I'm guessing those who had pickup date yesterday noon, would've ordered within an hour or two after deal was up.

          • @MiKaDo: 3 pm WA time. I think the guy didn't check the time and he said my order shows the old model but he give me the new one

        • Thanks for the info, I ordered same day ~4 hrs later. They are going to be so sick of Ozb by the time they are all out the door.

    • Yes indeed the suspension ones don't look as worn as the pics posted of the non suspension ones. Besides some scuffs on the handlebars and the wheel cover thing it's in pretty damn good condition.

  • Does anyone have some ideas for changing the color? repaint or just use some stickers to cover it?

    • I plan on painting the entire base & battery cover in raptor coating (black), the pole and handle bars will get painted in a raptor satin black spray paint. See how i go, by the 3rd one, it should look pretty good. The 1st one will probably be pretty average but will still be an improvement on the factory paint.

      • I am not good at DIY. I will try to find some stickers to cover it.
