Citi Reward Credit Card: 80,000 Bonus Velocity Frequent Flyer Points with $5,000 Spend in 3 Months, $199 Annual Fee @ Citi

70

For credit card churners, this card may not good as it used to be. But I ran out out of options.

(Back in 2023, it was spend $3000 within first 3 months for 60,000 Velocity with Zero annual fee. One of the best card).

As similar to other credit card, Spend $5000 within 3 months, 80,000 velocity PLUS roughly 5000 Citi reward points, which you can also transfer to Velocity at 2.5 :1

As Citi was acquired by NAB so your credit check will be showing NAB, not Citi.

Good luck churning

Customers who have previously received or are entitled to receive the 80,000 Velocity Points will not be eligible to receive another 80,000 Velocity Points. To be eligible to receive 80,000 Velocity Points, you must spend a minimum of $5,000 on eligible purchases using your new card within 3 months from approval. Eligible purchases exclude Cash Advances, Balance Transfers, Special Promotions, interest, fees, refunds and Chargebacks. We will request your Velocity membership number from you via email within 2 months from meeting the spend criteria. The 80,000 Velocity Points will be credited to your Velocity account within 3 months from us receiving your Velocity membership number. Your Citi Rewards Card must remain open and in good standing (for example - your account is not in default, suspended or closed), for the Velocity Points to be awarded. If you do not provide us with your Velocity membership number within 3 months from us requesting it, the Velocity Points will be forfeited. Membership of Velocity is your responsibility. Velocity membership and points earn and redemption are subject to the Velocity Terms and Conditions, as amended from time to time, available at velocityfrequentflyer.com. Please note, you will be charged interest on retail purchases while you have a balance transfer. This offer commenced 22 February 2024. We may vary or end this offer at any time. This offer is not available when closing or transferring from another Citi branded credit card account or in conjunction with any other Citi branded credit card offer.

  • what card you normally churning from and to? every year thing?

    • +1

I personally churn both QANTAS and Velocity cards, around 3 each per year (one every two months or so). It’s whatever is on offer at the time. Be sure to keep a list of when you open and close accounts

        Wow…. That's intense

        • Not really. It’s maybe an hour of my time and $100-250 annual fee for ~60,000-100,000 bonus points. I’d say that’s a great deal.

My partner has a higher income than me and has done around 11 cards in last 18 months, I have done 8

          • @Brick50: Doesn't it have negative impact on your credit score if applying too many credit card frequently? This might be important for those who are planning for any sort of loan. Any tip how to handle the scoring part?

            • @Alit: I check it monthly and it has stayed around the same amount

      • Hi @SirFrankGrimes,

Other that OzBargain of course, do you have other go to websites for finding and comparing cards you can share, please?

  • that's 0.25c/point, so better than citi premier pointhack deal (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/836040) which is 0.27c/point
but if you need more points faster, premier is worth considering

    thanks op

    • CitiPreimer
If opted to transfer 200,000 rewards points to Velocity at 2:1 to be slightly better value at 0.15c/point.

      • but 50k of those 200k are granted after 12 months only, and velocity is 2.5:1?

that makes 60k velocity points for $150 fee, that's the same 0.25c/point

        • +1

for velocity, citi premier and prestige is 2:1

          • @chanhoz: You are right, that makes it 75k / $150 fee, 0.2c/point. Good find

  • Still waiting for my points for this card.

    • How long have you been waiting? I have recently got a citi premier card, so would appreciate if someone can confirm how long does it take for the points to be credited to your account once you have reached the minimum spend criteria? And do you need to have an active card till the points get credited or can you close the card and still get the velocity points? Sorry if this has been answered before - completely new to this so still trying to find my feet.

  • I miss that 60k velocity points for $3k spend over 3 months and no annual fee. I did that 1.5yrs ago… was such an easy 60k velocity points. Was my first credit card after having to cancel my lifetime no annual fee Citibank Rewards CC (in order to secure a home loan) so it was nice to get one last hoorah with Citi.

But I'll probably stick to churning the Velocity Flyer twice a year when the 30k bonus points is running… get the extra 5k points they give you to convince you to complete the application, and also earn a few thousand points from spending. That's at least 100k points each churn or 200k per year which will do me. Mrs and I are looking at cutting our spending down after we move into our house anyway.

    • St.George/Bank of Melbourne/Bank SA have that very deal you're reminiscing about.. (50k equiv)

      • Aye! Pretty good churn… though I'm currently in the middle of a Bendigo Ready application and am still holding onto my Velocity Flyer until the 5k bonus from Virgin Money and the extra 30k bonus from Velocity themselves. Didn't want to chance cancelling the card until I get these.

        • Unless virgin have expressed it in writing to you, you're not going to get it and will need to raise a complaint as I did. Send them a message through the virgin portal to ask. There is nothing in the T&c stipulating the card must be kept open to receive the separate bonus points promoted by Velocity.

          • +1

@txb: Yeah, I've contacted Virgin Money about the 5k points. They said they've credited it to my account for payment with the next statement. We'll see if that happens.

As for the 30k bonus points, yeah, it's not in the T&Cs… I'm just risk adverse and would feel better keeping the card open until it's sorted.

I've got another 4 weeks or so before the 10-12 week wait stated by Velocity for when it's credited and considering I need to keep the card open for the 5k points too and need a current credit card to use, it's no big deal for me.

It's not like I can apply for the St George until my Bendigo Ready application is finalised either.

    • get the extra 5k points they give you to convince you to complete the application

YMMV but they didn't call me at all and just rejected after 2 days.

      • I got the call. And I called them back a week or so ago to request the 5k points. Apparently it's coming with the next batch of points that comes with each statement so we'll see how that goes come October.

  • Anyone know or have experience with Citi's sign-up bonus exclusion period? All I can see is

This offer is not available when closing or transferring from another Citi branded credit card account or in conjunction with any other Citi branded credit card offer.

Just cancelled the Citi Prestige and wondering if I need to wait the standard 12 months or if it is less for Citi? Thanks

    • +1

Citi don't have an exclusion period by time, they have a promotion exclusion meaning you cant apply and earn a bonus from the same type of promotion.

    • +1

Recall reading comments on older deals claiming it's ~3 months. About the same time period to wait before applying again if you got rejected lol.

  • so iF NAB aquired my old Citibank accounts. can i now reopen another Citibank account lol

  • Curious to know if anyone here has recently used the Citi payall feature to meet this min spend and whether it counted?
