Original Coupon Deal

First post here so forgive my post formatting and my English as it’s my second language.

Just saw this deal as I was looking for a laptop for my friend. Saw it was posted couple of weeks ago (or months) on OzB for around $3600 . Now it’s $3360 .. I believe it’s a good deal although I’m not a fan of HP but I don’t think you can find an 4090 laptop for that price.

    • sure it is only if I have that much cash to buy this …

Great price but very unfortunate that it comes with the woeful 13th gen Intel CPU.

    • +3

      What's woeful about 13th gen?

      • Hi Jarrod. Something that might tickle your interest.

I got a CB23 multi score of 36960 (1 run) on my 13900HX. Thermal throttling is my blocker until I repaste my laptop (20°C differences between cores so I suspect a bad thermal paste application).

        • +1

          Pretty good!

Be aware, that a 4090 in a slim laptop will be super hot, super loud and likely to be throttled from power and thermal constraints to be significantly slower than a desktop GPU. Do your research before dropping that kind of coin as you may find the performance limited enough that lower powered laptops will have similar performance.

I have this laptop. GPU doesn't throttle.

Thanks for the feedback! I was hesitant due to the comment, but now I’m going ahead with it, thanks to your reply.

The trick is to reduce your CPU heat by elevating its back and playing with fan speeds. I highly recommend the IETS GT600 cooling pad if it suits your needs. If you're really adventurous, undervolting the CPU/GPU will be your friend.

      • How's the noise from the fan?

        • +4

Loud on max but what laptop isn't?

      • +1

Ordered this few month back, machine is fine and doesn’t throttle on high settings of the new monkey game

          Return to Monkey Island?

        • I play Monke game on 4K cinematic settings at ~50fps

Not a gamer but have used gaming laptops in the past for work use for their "high performance" components. Not sure if it's the poor cooling or manufacturing shortcuts, but none of them last very long before hardware issues arise. A Toshiba Qosmio, MSI GS and HP Omen all died within 2 to 3 years. Razer fared better (5y now) but have switched to desktop for the most part. Performance is good for as long as it works but don't expect to get much longevity out of these type of systems.

    • Did you get those laptops serviced regularly? Dust and such can build up which ends up bricking them.

      • Did dust cleans myself, but nothing further. Didn't do any thermal paste re-applications etc.

  • Thanks op ordered 5

You’re welcome my Bday is coming up

    • Only 5? Surely you can order 50

  • I wonder if its battery can be upgraded. At least, then Optimus can increase the battery life to MacBook Pro levels.
Performance per watt is amazing on those laptops.

So I've got this. Interestingly enough it's been hovering at this price for a while (including before release), it was an amazing deal when it first came out and it's still a good deal. I think this one has a 2tb ssd whereas the one I got for $3300 15 months or so ago was a 1tb, otherwise identical.

In brief, performance is great, doesn't throttle, chassis is long in the tooth, keyboard feels good but has a bad layout. It has an extra m2 slot which is kind of hard to find out. I've had two significant maintenance issues, including that the ssd threw up a smart error (hp were happy to just send me the new ssd since I didn't want to send it away). I also had a really weird gpu issue where it would spontaneously and intermittently fail until resetting the bios. Hp repaired it out of warranty by replacing the whole mainboard, but there was a rather annoying issue where they kept asking me to do things that obviously wouldn't work.

    • +1

Yeah they probably repaired in under consumer law. Even if it states one year all hp laptops that are high end but maybe more have two years for free just don’t pay for the extra warranty unless you want more than that.

      • Very true, my thoughts exactly. I'm still happy they just repaired it without me needing to argue, quote consumer law, etc.

        • +1

Definitely a plus. Hope the new motherboard lasts you a long time

A GPU that powerful in a laptop like that is 1000% guaranteed to melt your dick clean off

  • Laptop 4090 is like desktop 4070ti. But the price is not that bad.

    • The chip itself is the same as a desktop 4080, just with a lower power limit.

  • Good price!

  • Wow that a good price it cost me like $4000 or so, not much stock i guess for my 4090 lol. I guess dont buy things during covid. I cant believe you can get a laptop with one, that cpu though. Good luck cooling that. I guess if you are not running 4k at massive size it might not be as bad.

    • +4

Laptop 4090 is somewhere between a desktop 4070 and desktop 4080. Nvidia have used a misleading naming convention.

      • Of course its a mobile gpu but i wasn't aware that it is more inline with 4070/4080.but still pretty crazy to get this for that little.

  • -1

So essentially price is steady or dropping bcos high end GPU laptops which are tend to be bought by more tech savvy folks are aware that high end GPU on laptops may have performance issues due to reasons like over heating.
