Everyone Who Bought a Japanese Car. R U OK?

I'll preface this by admitting that I have been out of the loop with regards to cars and news etc. But I do clearly remember that during the early days of the Japanese cars coming into the country, all the experts, mechanics and journos were saying that they were cheap "jap crap", they won't last and the Japanese people don't know how to build cars etc.

And the technology they brought in like fuel injection, etc when all the experts were saying that carburettor systems were the best because they can be tuned and not having abs is better because proper drivers know how to brake etc. I assume this tech wasn't widely adapted to newer cars because of the original tech's superiority?

Given the strong evidence by all these experts, I can only assume over the years all these Japanese manufacturers have gone under. And I can only assume early model cars like the hiluxes, land cruisers, skylines, etc were all taken to scrap or are completely worthless now.

My question to Japanese car owners is how did it feel having egg on your face for so long and why are people still buying them? I do see some on the road but given how many people and experts were so confident that they were crap, why they're still being purchased? Must be some sort of weird Japanese propaganda or cult I assume.

Its interesting seeing all the same things being said about the new Chinese cars today and EV's which all the experts are telling us they're crap and wont last. I guess we will live through another country trying to push their crappy cars and new fad technology onto us and soon fail just like the Japanese market did!

Anyway, some weirdo once said "Those that fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it". Unsure if this applies here but hopefully people learn!

just realised many of the products (except apple products) i buy are Japanese owned products (not made in japan) and they have been great (tvs / ps5 / switch / rice cooker / fridge / micro / even a deep frying pot lmao … ). I did have a japanese car as well, but i sold it due to upgrade for an suv but next time around keen to explore the ev lineup from toyota!

Nearly fell for the bait; the thing is, the very culture, government, even the working conditions are vastly different between the two countries. It’s not a fair comparison.

I hope no one is taking these posts to heart. It is just an attempt to divide by particular parties. Same goes for the massive comments submitted to the EV deals.

  • Japanese cars earned their reputation and had set backs like the cracking magna engines.

It took them a while to get to where they are today in terms of reputation and they earnt it.

Chinese vehicles have not earnt a thing. If anything they just keep dumping necromanced British badges and acrynom versions of past failures.

There has not been a single Chinese box that's been around long enough to get a second look.

It hasn't even been 2 years since the asbestos in engine bays.

Pardon my bluntness OP, but what 'Herbse' are you smoking!?

  • Dispite OP's weird hate with jp cars and other commenters glorifying jp cars, I recall toyota doing some shady stuff before and a quick google search leads to this.

The long-term quality of Japanese products are the by-product of their culture.
The short-term medium quality of Chinese products are from direct state-sponsorship, diluting the free market to gain market share, killing independent small and medium businesses.
They are not the same. This happened before with Solar pannel productions.
US and EU are slapping early tariffs. When the milk tank ran out, the house of card will collapse.

Unfortunately prices of cars with things like carburettors, chokes, AM radios and drum brakes have gone through the roof. All these old cars with vynyl seats that would give you 2nd degree burns in summer, where have they gone? When you see them, they have historic plates on them.

Sadly motorists like myself have to resort to buying vehicles build in Japan, Thailand, Korea, China, Malaysia. I feel so ashamed.
Please excuse me, i'm going off for a cry.

That's it. The older tech is so much better just like everyone predicted. All the armchair experts who said carbys will always be superior were right.

So we should listening to the ones who tell us that petrol is superior and EVs will never take off!

      Heed the warning 🙂

        • -1

Completely agree. The experts of those times were also convinced so called "horseless carriages" could never replace horses.

How foolish we have all been

          • @Herbse: The times the experts were wrong become infamous because far far far more often the experts are right. You keep clowning though mate, it suits you.

  • what's the point here? to stir up people and vent collectively? :)

doesn't matter really, there is no local manufacturing anymore, so yeah either Japanese or Chinese, or in the near future Indian or Indonesian, we'll have to import from somewhere else

    good satire. me like.

Were Japan ever as aggressive to Australia as China can be when something they dont like is said? (1960's onwards, ignore before that obviously).

e.g. enquiry into covid so they try to hamper our entire agriculture industry.

You really should have picked better strawman arguments than those two. I don't think anybody, let alone experts, said those things about normal A to B road cars back in the day. Quite the opposite.

    • I should have clarified. It wasn't the experts saying it. It was the "experts" saying it.

..meanwhile German automakers starting to dirty their underpants because their sales are down some

  • Probably the worst troll post I've seen on this site. It is so bad I can't even understand clearly what point he is trying to make. Yes, Japanese car makers are going out of business slowly except Toyota. They can all right the ship, but they are having the last few rolls of the dice before it becomes dire.

Chinese car companies are so well capitalized and on the forefront of innovation the they are going to rule the car market for a few decades to come.

  • +1

Upon hindsight, 100% agree with this post.
It's not a troll post but basically just pointing out history, He could add in South Korea also.

But 100% agree Chinese automakers will be the next powerhouse, not just EVs.

It's absolutely the fault of legacy auto, who laughed at Tesla, whereas China simply copied and said yeah we can use this Manufacturing process for ICE cars and EVs. The Germans, Japanese and US automakers dismissed Tesla's as junk.
Well except for the head of VW, who was let go for his views.

If your not using the Giga casting process, cost will be too high, and you can't compete on Safety.
If your not using the Tesla painting process then you are using 50x as much water.
These are not just limited to EVs but can be applied to all aspects.

    • +2

Glad you read into it. And yes that's the point.

I don't particularly want china to take over, but my point is that everyone was thought that Japan taking over was laughable, until they did.

If people are truly anti china, they'd see the similarities and would want current manufacturers to change their tune. Instead Toyota, Hyundai etc are doubling down on their price rises with a base corolla and i30 now costing more than a kitted out ev from MG.

Just like in the 90s, people will choose with their wallet every time.

      • +1

Lol.. I just purchased one of those MG EVs for the kids. Look I am not going to imply it's Toyota reliable, but honestly there just isn't a lot that can go wrong, so I can see how they offer a 10 year warranty.
I am not for mandating EVs they won't be for everyone, but after purchasing for the kids to drive to\from the station, friends, ect… I now look at EVs differently.

        • Insane power, with our large hills, particularly the M1, I am preferring to drive the EV, just an absolute pleasure.
        • Budget, not claiming to save $$$, but I now need to force myself to drive my Mazda, I always think fuel cost. Where a trip to Newcastle in the EV my mind sees as free.
        • Range, so not a thing. Purchased for local runs, but a round trip to Newcastle on the high-way, range isn't even a consideration any more.
        • Drivability, isn't even a start button, you basically get in and drive and press a single large button to park\stop.
        • Don't miss the engine noise.

Look I am at the point now, I am cancelling my search for a mid-suv and just going to wait until the EV prices come down.
The EV is now mine, and the kids drive the Mazda,
I really would prefer to drive an EV now with less range than an ICE car. This is from an old rev-head, Can't believe I feel this way.
Bottom line is China is thinking ahead, EVs are 100% the future, and the rest are being left behind.

        • Completely agree. It's hard to look past what's coming out of China especially with regards to the ev market and the fact that Tesla's are made there etc.

I've always been pro value and pro not getting screwed over. And it just makes sense now for many people and having competition keeps all the other brands at bay. We can see Toyota and Hyundai creeping up their prices for no reason other than greed and hope that people continue with their china fear.

Thought on soon to be launched Xpeng G6?
    I am very excited.

    • So many new makes\models from China to get excited about.
I will also consider the G6, but there will be other models at half the price.
Call it budget\call it whatever, but they are going first principles, ripping everything out. Each new EV model will have LESS.
      Less can actually be better.
      - Casted parts (eliminates hundreds of weld points, rust and points of failure), stronger lighter (eliminates hundreds of custom robots per manufacturing line)
      - Safer (more actual crumple zones)
      - Less parts, more reliability (leading to bigger warranties)
      - Less Cost (cheaper)
      - Enable more software features (although I do like tactile buttons), a button can fail.
      - Less weight, improved economy, better handling. A Tesla Y is lighter than many ICE equivalents, imagine the new model.

Won't be Tesla quality, but I don't need that level of features\quality, many others may be like minded.
That being said, I may hold out for Tesla's Lower Cost SUV.

  • Sir this is a bargain website, not r/circlejerk

  • Funny post. Like saying "My question to Japanese car owners is how did it feel having egg on your face for so long and why are people still buying them?".. so how is it going with the Australian Car industry?

"And I can only assume early model cars like the hiluxes, land cruisers, skylines, etc were all taken to scrap or are completely worthless now."

Last time I checked, all the classic and sports Japanese cars from the 80s and 90s have gone up from their original price by 300-1000%. lol. Try buying a Skyline GTR for less than $150k..

  • It’s products from friend vs products enemy

    • Who's the enemy?

Japan and China are Australia's top two 2-way trading partners. Totalling close to $350B a year

      https://www.dfat.gov.au/publications/trade-and-investment/tr…

I would have said calling either an enemy would be detrimental to Australia's supply chain and stability.

Money talks doesn’t it, the UN are telling us that crimes against humanity are happening to the Uyghurs in China, the US are calling it genocide. But no, apparently we’re OK to look the other way as long as we keep getting cheap cars, a buyer for our exports, etc.

I’m not sure that these types of matters were a problem in Japanese cars, slave labour was probably a concern back in WWII but not anymore.

  • OP, I'm old but you are clearly older as I do not recall a time when Japanese cars were considered crap, obviously it was a time before the 80's. What I do remember is that throughout my life Chinese products have always been considered cheap garbage. I know they are everywhere today, maybe that's why my appliances die within 4 years instead of lasting 20 like they did in the 80's?
