Nokia N9 $99 at Dick Smith Clearance

1360

DSE are clearing out the remaining N9 stock.
Probably not many left but is is a bargain at $99. You may need to phone around. I got one as its cheaper than fixing my cracked screen.

Old thread on the phone here:
http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/66255

If you don't know what an N9 is, its probably not for you.

For all the hard work and bad feelings, $99 is not a bargain IMO.

  • can you install another OS such as android os on these or not? I dont think the nokia os is much use with the latest apps.

    • +2

cant you read or are you just too damn lazy to scroll up?

  • I went to Chullora from Coogee Beach. Left at 7:20 still stuck in parra road traffic near broadway. 3.5 hours wasted :( I knew there would be plenty of people calling the stores but decided to be safe and get there pre opening. Other customers there and only one unit. I rang burwood same deal (although it was ex repair) and there were 20-30 people enquiring in th first five minutes. In store! Annoying if people shamelessly ozbargained them yesterday and dse workers once they knew from savvy customers snagged them for themselves. I just wanted one! They really need to update the website with exact amount of units and whether they were refurb. I would've still bought if they were refurb or exdisplay for 99… Just seems a bit cheap not to mention it. Also called winston hills but they only had one and it had been sold.

I dont get all the whinging. It was available, and if someone scored one as a result of the post, great, its served its purpose. If you missed out, tough luck.

Someone got the last one at DSE Wollongong at 9am. Beat me by 2 minutes.

    Whoever it was, congrats!

  • Speaking for myself I'm not begrudging the lucky OBers who managed to get a phone, far from it. It feels nice that some other people are getting a good deal from retailers. I just think DSE should have their online house in a bit of a better order especially for 'hot' items such as this. Also this is not just another deal, I have been hanging out for this phone for a while. Passing on the 4S and making do with a 19 dollar Alcatel I bought from Hardly normal in the Xmas sales last year. Oh and I'm on Cleveland st now :)

    • Any neggers care to reply to me? As a pretty old dude I would be happy to hear your thoughts. I was just relaying my experience… I think DSE really needs to get its act together. I understand it was a clearance line but a) there was no stock remaining at some stores which indicated low stock b) apparently through comments on here there were phones available at stores which showed no stock and c) the price was apparently wrong (which was a good a good thing but still is amateur especially when their outrageous demand and loss on the stock could've been reduced) all it causes is disappointment for the customers who miss out and a retailer hurting from losing hundred+ on each unit,

was at Liverpool DSE this morning at 9am sharp, walked in, the phone rang, guy immediately says "Good morning Dick Smith Electronics, no we don't have the n9 in stock. Thanks, Bye." and immediately he and his workmate cracks up, Pretty sure they've been getting calls all morning and having a laugh about it.

    • Went there. He was extraordinarily rude and unhelpful - and yes - he was laughing and saying there were none anywhere else. I stepped outside made a couple of phone calls and some very helpful DSE staff elsewhere led to me having bought one later in the day. He really needed a lesson in customer service: "Sorry we have sold out but store WYZ still says they have one, also store ABC etc. The phone lines are jammed. I suggest you either go there or wait a while and call them."

Deals such as this can create great PR or expose customer service people who should choose another career.

Thanks go the really helpful people at the stores I mentioned earlier. It wasn't too much trouble for them to look in the computer, give a phone number and give some helpful advice. Thanks to them, I was one of the lucky ones. When I want a product next time, I'll visit one of those stores - NOT Liverpool.

  • Anyone called Helensvale to see if in stock?

    • Yep, and no they said so many ppl called this morning none left!

  • called up, "they are advertised wrong on the website", its really 199"

    • For what store?

      • Wetherill Park

    • +4

Which shop? That's a dodgy excuse. Lots of people including myself bought it for $99.

      • Very dodgy. Its still advertised for $99.

    • tell them to scan it will show up $99 and you pay $99, end of story!

  • I was at DSE in Ringwood (Melbourne) at 9am, second person in line. The first asked about the N9, was told there was one left, a return. I assume she bought it.
But, Nunawading has stock of Magenta. The salesman seemed to suggest that they have a few left. So, if you are not fussy about colour, they could have some left. PS It WAS $99!

    • They said they have sold out

  • Just got told its a error on the site. It's actually $199. Not $99

    • Saw the normal price in the store which was $549. It's entirely their fault because how is anyone supposed to know it's a pricing error when the don't state the oroginal price.

  • +3

To those who got them at $99. Congrats!

  • +1

If they advertise it for $99 then you should get it for $99. It's their mistake.

  • +1

Don't trust their onlinestck levels. A called many, many stores this morning around Melbourne and quite a few saisd they sold out this morning, so they had stock.

  • Greensborough sold out.. Only had one anyway!

  • Picked up one a little while back, the store said they cant put it through at $99, but after calling DS online sales team they agreed to give it at $99. :-)

  • I managed to grab the last one from our local Dick Smith, they only had one in stuck. Interestingly, the guy working at DS didn't know about the deal, and when I told him it was advertised for 99 dollars, he chuckled and said: "No way! It's a 500 dollars phone!" But his smile faded away soon after he checked their website!

    Three cheers to OZbargain!

    Hip hip hooray!
    Hip hip hooray!

I got the same answers from the stores I rang this morning - "Oh it's an error on the site; blah blah."

Unconvinced, I rang up their online sales team; she said that the store should be selling it at whatever is advertised online. When I asked what comeback I have, she told me to call Head Office.

The head office receptionist transferred me to Customer Service. Spoke to a lovely gentleman named Nigel who called up the store I was dealing with. They called me back, offering it at $99.

You guys can try citing this phone call, or even give head office a call yourselves. Also, here's my receipt if that helps (with sensitive details whited out).

Good luck, and may the best man ring! If any of this helps you, let me know! :)

Btw, as unity1 said above, don't trust their online stock levels; I bought mine from Keysborough, which the website said was out of stock…

    • What is HO phone number please?

      • Their phone number is 02 9642 9100

        • Thanks

  • Any stores left in sydney if anyone knows I'm desperately in need for one :)

  • So did anyone pay $199 and manage to get a refund of $100 back yet?

  • Are there any places in VIC that are not sold out?

  • Karingal had one but they were charging $199. I thought I'd grab one while I was there so atleast I got one then I could complain later. I don't see why I shouldn't complain because they have it advertised for $99 (still is $99) and every other store was honouring that price. Where is the consistancy?

What stores sell the n9? Will jb hi price match this?

    • JB say that they sold out ages ago, so no price matching there. Deleted line for them (at least at Liverpool, you could always try another store).

  • Picked mine up, and apologised for the hundreds of phone calls. (Another call came in while I was paying.)
Apparently they had had two left. The manager got one, and I got the shop-soiled one.
Just noticed there is a small piece broken off the SIM holder, and the IMEI does not match the box. :(

    • Interesting that staff get the best first. Probably also claimed their staff discount. Sorry to hear yours is damaged. Guess there's no chance of the manager swapping :(

    • Re: broken SIM holder

Claim warranty repair from Nokia. Nokia service hotline should be printed on your receipt.

  • Got one from Bundaberg…Sealed box but looks like it had a little ding on the top corner so not sure what the issue was there. Lady behind counter said that someone stuffed up at Head Office and that price was supposed to be $199….drove from Hervey Bay to get it today…luckily holidays have just started :)

  • Just wanted to give an update regarding the actual phone: it's really laggy and slow. Operating system feels half-baked and unpolished. The screen is terrible. In short, it's not that great a buy as I thought. Listing it on eBay tomorrow.

    • what did you expect from a single core cpu?

      • Except, even my iPhone 3GS (released three years ago) runs better on the latest OS, iOS 6.

Also, it's the first generation of the MeeGo OS – it should be tailored to run on the phone…

    • Fools rush in. You were warned that its not to all tastes. Thanks for the superficial and ill-informed review.
I particularly enjyed your insights into the AMOLED vs LCD debate.

People buy it for the fuctionality and hardware (now far from the latest, but $99!), not the shiny buttons and bounce-scroll.
Wouldn't it have been quicker to read a couple before buying? The laggy UI problem can be fixed, but its never going to be as shiny and polished as the IOS/An droid. At least you didn't complain about how few (fart) apps there are.

      • Fools rush in.
Fools, hey? I'm so foolish that I was able to track down a phone and get it at the wrongly-advertised price. I was foolish to buy the last phone that was significantly marked down in stock. Yep. Foolish.

You were warned that its not to all tastes.
I'm well aware of that – I knew about MeeGo and the N9 before nearly everybody else did. In fact, I was really excited about finding and being able to acquire it. You've got to understand: I wanted to love the phone, but couldn't. You like it? Fine! Everyone has different tastes and opinions – what's wrong with that?

People buy it for the fuctionality and hardware (now far from the latest, but $99!)
In reality, it is not an old phone (iPhone 4S was released a few months after - it is still going strong), nor is it a hundred dollar phone. Hence, I was expecting much more.

Thanks for the superficial and ill-informed review.
Apologies for not writing a 1000 word essay on each aspect of the phone while half-awake at midnight. Btw, could you please point out where I said I was providing a "review"?

People buy it for the fuctionality and hardware (now far from the latest, but $99!), not the shiny buttons and bounce-scroll.
Sorry - where did I complain about "shiny buttons" or "bounce-scroll"? I can't find it…
What use is said functionality if it is agonisingly slow to use?

Wouldn't it have been quicker to read a couple before buying?
Um, how do you know whether I did or not? Just to let you know, I read SEVERAL reviews and they did not elaborate upon the operating system. Furthermore, each person's "lag acceptability threshold" differs.

The laggy UI problem can be fixed
Not when the entire MeeGo team has left Nokia.

At least you didn't complain about how few (fart) apps there are.
Whoops – it looks like I took the trollbait again!

Chill out, mate. It's only a damn phone - I was only buying it to sample it anyway.

Didn't like my comment? Ignore it!

          Fools, hey?

Its an idiom " … where angels fear to tread". The good reasons for rushing in this case are clear, but the consequesnces are the same. I agree parts of it are half-baked, but the "The screen is terrible." is pure troll.

        • the "The screen is terrible." is pure troll.

I wasn't trying to troll; I was merely stating my opinion. I found it too dark, and the text was rendered too jagged for my liking.

    • Upgrade the firmware via Nokia software or NaviFirm. Runs much better than the stock one it came with. Once upgraded, I actually feel really bad that it didn't continue. Nokia were heading in a fantastic direction.

Nokia had been too proud was once the dominating mobile phone manufacturer until it was too late. It deserves to end up for what it is today when the most expensive Nokia phone could cost as much as $1600 before the iPhone.

        • it's their destiny because Nokia's management xxxx it up or shall I say no one was as visionary as SJ so their fate was inevitable. Same goes to Microsoft and RIM!

Big thank you to DS customer service for refunding me $100 on the purchase price of $199 and thus honouring the advertised $99 price.

  • I went to my local DS on the 5th, although online showed no stock. And indeed there didn't seem to be any, but as it was busy there, I couldn't be bothered to wait to be able to talk to someone. Anyway, went in there today again, for some other business, but checked the mobiles also and whaddayaknow, they had one N9 there neatly in the cabinet in its box. Naturally, I enquired there price and was told it is $199. I told them how it was $99 just a few days ago, but they just said sorry. Now, with seemingly quite a few people getting it for that $99 price, I was wondering if anyone would be so kind as to share their receipts to give me some ammunition in trying to get the price down? Thanks.

    • Probably wont be possible now that they have removed the online ad.

For those who DO like the N9, and want to keep the hardware current with software updates, keep an eye on Jolla mobile. The same folks who developed the Meego platform for Nokia have developed a new handset and OS called Sailfish. The first announcement was that Sailfish would not be made available to N9 owners but it now seems that it will be available to developers. Could be interesting.
In the meantime, Meego 1.3 works fine, and I have an Android to alternate with — which I bought for a bargain price thanks to OB.
