Smart Awards Card: 12.5k QFF Points Monthly with $1.5k Spend for 4 Months, Fees: $60/Year + $19/Month($0 w/$2k) @ Commbank Yello

2570

Fees: $60 per year for Qantas Points earning option (free for CommBank Awards Points earning option). $19 per month credit card fee, or spend at least $2,000 on your Smart Awards credit card in your statement period to qualify for no monthly fee for that month.

edit: DISCLAIMER: a few people are getting their knickers in a knot over this card in particular not being exceptional value which I do tend to agree with so I do encourage you to consider the table comparing various credit cards below to see best option for your circumstances. This card does require to be open for 4 months and spend $2k per month in everyday spending to avoid fees. There are better options available but this was best suited to me and my circumstances and is the best points to fee ratio but does require a large $$ spend and require the card to remain open for 4 months

To get the best value out of this card you need to spend $2,000 per month on everyday transactions to receive 12,500 Qantas Frequent Flyer Points each month for four months totaling 50,000 Qantas Points and also to avoid the monthly fee of $19. You will only pay $60 per year to opt-in to earn Qantas Points, meaning you can get 833 points per dollar spent in fees.

What can 50,000 Qantas Points get you? You can get a Classic Rewards Economy Flight from Sydney to Los Angeles one way for 41,900 points. That same flight in cash would cost $1,500. Not bad for only $60 in CommBank fees and 8,100 points leftover to play with…

Alternatively, you can go with 90,000 CommBank Awards points over Qantas points which will cost you NOTHING monthly if you spend over $2k per month and you can convert your points into $425 in digital Coles, K-Mart, Target or Myer vouchers(shop.commbankawards.com.au).

Earn up to 50,000 Qantas Points (or 90,000 CommBank Awards points)

  • Earn 12,500 Qantas Points (or 22,500 CommBank Awards points) each month when you spend $1,500 or more per month for the first four months.
  • $60 per year to opt-in to earn Qantas Points. No monthly fee if you spend at least $2,000 during your statement period. Otherwise the monthly fee is $19
  • Offer commenced 23 July 2024 and is only available to customers in CommBank Yello when applying for the credit card. Terms and conditions apply.
  • Earn up to 0.6 Qantas Points for every $1 spent up to and including $5,000 in a statement period on eligible purchase.
  • Points Boost: Earn up to 0.8 Qantas Points per $1 spent on your highest eligible purchase made in a statement period up to 400 Qantas Points
  • Pay no international transaction fees for purchases you make overseas or online
  • Access to international travel insurance when you spend at least $500 in a single transaction on prepaid travel using your card and activate before you travel
  • 20.99% p.a. purchase interest rate. Minimum credit limit of $3,000. Up to 44 days interest-free on purchases. Pay no additional cardholder fee.
  • Enjoy access to over 1,300 airport lounges worldwide for a fee with Mastercard Travel Pass provided by DragonPass with your Smart Awards credit card

I've gone looking across all the banks because I'm due for a new Qantas Points earning credit card. I know this isn't a proper churning card as you need to keep it open for four months, but I've done NAB, Suncorp, St George, Westpac, ANZ & Bankwest all in the last 12 months so this is the one which is most suitable for me, and also one of the best Qantas Points earning cards per dollar paid in fees.

Off memory, I think they've just reintroduced the bonus points offer which was not available for a lot of this year. Not necessarily too many benefits outside the bonus points, but it is one of the few cards though which offers 0% international transaction fees (most are 3%).

CommBank (Yello) also have an offer on their Ultimate Awards card(commbank.com.au) which works out better value in fees than this one, if and only if you spend $4k per month to not attract a monthly fee of $35. This one is much more achievable of $2k per month to not get the $19 fee.

Disclaimer: everything applies below if you haven't held any of these banks specific cards in the last 12 or 18 months (depending on the bank). Some of these cards have additional bonus point offers if you keep them open for 12 or 18 months, but who'd do that, meet spend criteria, receive bonus points & cancel… just keep churnin'. I dare say there might be one or two errors, but it'll point you in the right direction based on your monthly everyday spending to what offer you can best take advantage of. I've put some weird 60 day spend criteria or exuberant total spend amounts in bold to highlight potential shortfalls in making the bonus spend criteria. Really depends what you want from your card, a lot of the ones towards the bottom of the list offer better perks, but if you're purely after points, aim for the ones towards the top.

  • Is there a minimum income requirement? I don't want to apply for a CommBank Yello account to later realise you need to meet the minimum income requirement.

    • CommBank cards have no stated minimum income requirement. I believe this has been the case for a number of years.

      • Ah, I can see that with this CC you need a proof of income. Bugger.

  • +6

For those new to churning, it must be quite confusing looking at this deal and wondering why so many upvotes. It's all relative, as this is a terrible deal, but just not quite as terrible as what CBA usually offers. Key takeaway: CBA are scum, look elsewhere.

I have a simple metric that I use to compare CC offers. I assume freq flyer points are worth 1c each (and you could debate higher or lower but for simplicity I stick with 1c), take away fees, divide by total spend required.

On this basis this card has a net profit of $440 from a whopping $8k spend required. A "return" on that $8k spend of only 5.5%. That is truly dreadful.

I've just checked and across over 60 CC churns, the lowest I've achieved is 10%. Average is 23%. Median is 20%.

    • Upvote for 60 churns.

    • +3

IMO I won’t count Min spend as a “cost” of churning a card as it’s not hard to reach min spend by purchasing gift cards, while it’s time consuming you literally don’t lose any money value at all (or only minimal fee such as GC activation). There might even be profit in form of ER/ flybuys or cashback on GC.

Annual fee is the real cost of churning a card as that’s non-avoidable fee and non-refundable (NAB does pro rata refund before but no longer the case)

      • +2

Never said min spend is a cost. It does change the equation completely though. If this deal only required $1k spend then it would be an excellent quick churn.

The min spend IS an opportunity cost however. Utilising $8k of genuine spend (general living expenses that have to be spent regardless of how) to only earn a measly 50k from one card is just not efficient, when you could split that between three new credit cards deals and bank 200k+ freq flyer points.

Does anyone know how much is the airport lounges access fee under the associated DragonPass program? the links on their site is not that clear.

    thx!

    • +1

      USD35. Use ozbargain's way £20. Search it.

  • Great write up

  • Thanks op for the summary and providing cost information.
I've noticed a lot of credit card (with Qantas points), states "$75 annual Qantas Rewards Program fee applies.", in addition to the Cards annual fee.
Does anybody know how soon the Qantas fee gets applied?

    • On the first statement

  • Anyone know what the approval times are for this?

    • +1

I was approved within a couple of days. I'm used to instant approval but this wasn't too bad.

  • Hi OP, I had CBA Ultimate Awards card which I cancelled 4 months back.
If I go and apply for CBA Smart Awards, do you reckon I will be eligible for 50k QFF. Its a different CC but yes if it falls under CBA CC, then I had one in last a12 months.

    • Generally its 12mths for any credit card product. 18 for Amex

    • +1

      Clearly stated in the T&Cs:-

Offer not available to customers who currently hold, or have held, any activated Awards card types in the 12 months prior as a primary cardholder or customers who switch from other card types.

  • Good comparison even though its not perfect - but maybe one thing to point out about the Amex Qantas Ultimate is that you get a 450 travel credit for a 450 fee.

  • I directly on the link without having a Commbank acc. This process is not eligible for the promo! I think you need to ensure that you are with Yello, aka open a bank acc.

    • Correct. If you’re not already in Yello, the promo is not applicable. The way cba works, it might take at least 2-3 weeks before you meet the criteria and get enrolled.

  • Does anyone know if this is eligible for Yello that's with the Streamline Basic Acc?

    • Which CommBank transaction accounts are eligible?

To access CommBank Yello, you need to have one or more of the below CommBank transaction accounts:

      Smart Access
      Everyday Offset
Pensioner Security (card access only, not passbook access)
      Private Banking Account
Complete Access (no longer available for sale)

Which CommBank home loans are eligible?
      Standard Variable Rate
      Fixed Rate
      Extra
      Basic Variable Rate (Economiser)
      No Fee (Low Rate)
      CommBank Green Loan
      Bridging Loan
      Digi Home Loan

  • +1 for the table, a legend for creating it!

  • Does anyone know if you are a supplementary card holder, does that count as having held the card (e.g. trying to work out if my partner is eligibile to take out a credit card of the same company as me, and still be eligible for the reward points)

  • Probably would do a little better than 833ppd as when spending the $8k you'd also accrue at least 4800 points.

It's also a bit skewed to view just the fees. For eg, most amex have a travel voucher that will offset or negate the annual fee. If you're chasing QFF points, and actually fly, hard to beat QF Ultimate. Essentially 50k points for no money.

But it's really the poor earn rate and high spend that hurt this deal - but doesn't kill it IMO. The fee-free intl tx and free insurance is terrific but the monthly fee ruins that (as we saw with the Latitude debacle).

  • This is prob subjective but a $2k spend per month won't be achievable. So, do you think a $136 total fee, just $1.5k spend for 4 months is of value?

  • Register here(qantas.com) to get 20k more, if haven’t had Qantas card in 12 months

    • The CommBank promo is exclusive to the Yello app I presume. So if you register directly through Qantas you won't be eligible for CommBank's promo.

      • Worth a shot!

  • Has anyone tried applying for this without Yello? Just tried starting the application and it seemed to allow me to start it, just not sure if there’s a check later on?

Am not ready to apply yet (in the process of refinancing and closing another CC), but would be keen to not wait for Yello to kick in later if I don’t need to.

    • Did you figure this out?

      • +1

Figured it wasn’t worth the risk so didn’t bother

  • Wondering if strata/council/water counts as eligible purchase for the 1.5k per month?

    • Generally, no. I think there are some ways around it with certain apps, or companies but I've never looked into it too much.

      • its super easy through sniip- the fee is 1.5%. I am in danger of not meeting a minimum spend- I will just put my rent or bills through sniip early to save myself.

  • I've only just done my first churn with St. George. I've held a Westpac CC for the past decade and most of my main bills come out of that automatically. Just wondering for others that churn, do you have a main card that you keep for this purpose at the expense of not being eligible for that banks offers?

    • I use credit cards purely for churning bonus points. never held one for their additional offers, etc. No harm in keeping a second one open if you want, but to me, for Westpac in particular, that's just one less card you can churn every 12 months and giving up the option to earn points what think is the best card on the market. Westpac Black, 90k Qantas points for $225

  • -2

If CommBank is the answer to your financial questions, you're asking the wrong questions.

  • Did anyone try to use Smart Reward CC to buy at Giftcards.com.au which recently offers no fee on Coles prepaid master debit card purchase?

Somehow the transaction verification did not show up for after using various browser and devices and payment failed. However this works alright when I pay with my AMEX.

    • had the same issue and even called cba call centre, they were clueless at first, and then after waiting on hold the story changed to it being "cash-like transaction"

      • Hi so how this was resolved at the end or this is still pending?

        • I've given up, some battles are not worth fighting. When I need those, I use my Citi which gives double points. Commbank Smart is only for places where I get 1,5 ppd (supermarkets, eateries, fuel etc)

          • +1

@powerhead: I may have the gambling lock that restricts this transaction. Am unlocking in two fays to see if this works

  • Are you eligible if you have had this offer in last 2 months?

CommBank Low Rate Credit Card ($6 Monthly Fee): $100 Monthly Cashback for 4 Months with $500 Monthly Spend @ CommBank Yello

  • You have done NAB, Suncorp, St George, Westpac, ANZ & Bankwest in 12 months! wow how many cards you open at one time? do you have a home loan/?

    • +2

Yep, and currently have this one because I can’t get any of those banks cos it hasn’t been 12/18 months since I had it open. Only ever one card at a time, sometimes overlap if one’s waiting for bonus points to drop and I want to start using the new one… yes to home loan. If there is a need to refinance I make sure I don’t have any open at the time.

      • do you wait for credit report to update or just close and apply new straight away once closed (credit report takes time)

        • It will ask what the credit card is and you can provide details around it being a closed card from the closure note each bank gives you.

          • @OpulentLace: right so you don't wait for credit report to update, thanks!

            • @ozbargainerlife1: Often if I have a $6k limit card rolling over to another $6k limit card I wouldn’t get queries but it becomes a bit of a problem (for me with my income) if I have a $12k limit applying for another $12-15k limit card.. high income I dare say would not be a problem.

  • I haven't received the 12.5k QFF Points even though I met the requirements. Has anyone experienced the same? Just asking before I begin the arduous process of chasing it up with CBA…

  • Same here. I haven't received the 22,500 Award Points and I met all the requirement.
    But I read the t/c

Total eligible bonus points will be credited within 90 days of the end of the final month of the offer campaign period and will appear on your statement as ‘BONUS AWARDS’. The total bonus awards owed will be based on the number of months where the monthly spend criteria has been met.

does it mean, we will get the point (22,500 Award) within 90 days from the monthly statement ?

    • +2

90 days from the end of your 4th month.

Note also spend criteria for bonus points is not based on yor statement period, but rather on “four successive 30-day periods <…> Your first 30-day period commences from the day your account is opened which you can find on your first statement.”

      • +1

I see. Thank you for the explanation.

      • +1

        Are you sure? Read the T&Cs at the bottom of the website;

25,000 CommBank Awards points or 15,000 Qantas Points will be awarded every month (statement period) $1,500 or more is spent on eligible purchases for 4 consecutive statement periods. Maximum bonus points available is 100,000 CommBank Awards points or 60,000 Qantas Points. The first eligible spend period will commence from the day your account is opened, up to the end of your second statement period. After this date, the offer spend requirements will align to each statement period that follows until exhausted. Transactions must be fully processed and any pending transactions at the end of the statement period will not count towards the spend criteria. Cash advances and refunds (including CommBank Yello cashback offers) are not included as eligible transactions.

        • +1

You responded to a comment from 1 November. The T&Cs you've quoted only apply to the new ~ Offer commenced 3 December 2024(commbank.com.au).

The new different T&Cs are more logical than the previous system based on successive 30-day periods that weren't aligned to statements.

        • They finally realised it was an admin pain to calculate the criteria periods and changed the T&Cs as of today. It's now indeed based on the statement period, not the account opening date.

  • +1

I just wanted to say thank you to @OpulentLace for the table and the effort you put into it - extremely useful.

I also appreciated the table you built earlier this year for the Westpac card, it turbocharged my churning, so thank you!
I kind of want to subscribe to you deals lol, don't know if that's an option on OZB

  • Late to the game, but is this expired? It seems can still apply on their website.

    • offer still available, make sure you're already in any Yello tier prior to applying.

the only change is QFF fee increasing to 90/yr in Feb

      • Understood, thanks!

  • +2

I think the points are now 15k per month for 4 months? And also seems like CBA just extended the waiting period to 18 months, similar to Westpac. NAB has been 18 months for a while.. Only ANZ has 12 months, for now.

Offer commenced 3 December 2024 and is only available to customers in CommBank Yello Everyday, Everyday Plus or Homeowner benefit sets when they apply for a new Smart Awards credit card. Offer not available to customers who currently hold, or have held, any activated Awards card types in the 18 months prior as a primary cardholder or customers who switch from other card types.

Getting harder with this credit card churning game…

    • Thanks for pointing out this bad news.

Guess the writing is on the wall with ANZ …

  • Would existing sign up members be eligible for 15k per month or just the original 12.5k?

    • Based on the offer when you apply, so if you applied before today then the original 12.5k

  • +2

Has anyone received the bonus QFF points from this credit card yet?
I opened this card in October and have been through 2 statement cycles spending >$2k each cycle with no bonus points yet.

    • on the same boat

    • any update?

    • same

    • +1

Nothing yet, My 4th statement period ends on 3rd Jan and covers the 90 days since opening the card.Hhopefully I get the points then.

      • Have you received all the points now? How long did it take?

  • I’ve signed up for the card successfully and received my first statement but when I check the app, it says im not eligible for commbank yello? Is that right? I did the Qantas points option

  • Qantas have really dropped the ball here slowing down how quickly they pay their points. In 2023, I had a Qantas Credit Card, and whilst a slightly different product ($6K spend within 3 Months, 70,000 points) I met my min spend on 16th June and had the 70,000 points in my Qantas account by the 26th June…

Still waiting on first two months bonus points. I've gone to another card (Citibank), as I need 100k points by end of February 2025. Risking the $19 monthly fee as I've stopped spending on the card, hoping the points will drop in the third month,

Ideally, my Citibank 70,000 points will land January and my 2 months of 25k points from this card (2 months @ 12.5k points) will also land in January otherwise I'm going to miss out on retaining Points Club Plus and won't move to Silver Status.

    • Have you followed up with commbank as to the bonus points timeframe?

      • +1

Yeah I did try, even though it is in the fine print bonus points to be awarded within 90 days after the fourth month, but tried calling for help and they just regurgitated the T&Cs. They're making churning card so much harder these days. not just Comm, but all of them increasing their time frames without having held a card etc…

        • Just realised I received my points few days ago. Took about 3 weeks after the 4th statement period.

          • @powerhead: Did you receive all 60k QFF points or just the 12.5k points for first statement?

            • @yoswag123: The whole amount for all 4 months came in one lot. Shouldn’t make any difference but I’m on the VFF bandwagon, hence commbank own points.

          • @powerhead: Just wondering, did you close the card immediately when the 4th statement period ended? I’m thinking about doing that to not incur the $19 fee but not sure if that’ll prevent me from getting the points

            • @afayd: Never close a card until you receive all pending points in your account. And by that I mean redeem into QFF (or velocity, or whatever else floats your boat) and make sure they land there if you’re accruing in banks own loyalty scheme.

  • Deal expired as the offer terms have changed. Someone can repost:

Earn up to 100,000 CommBank Awards points or up to 60,000 Qantas Points
Earn 25,000 CommBank Awards points or 15,000 Qantas Points each month when you spend $1,500 or more per month for the first 4 months on a new Smart Awards credit card. Offer is only available to customers in CommBank Yello when applying for a new Smart Awards card. Ongoing eligibility, exclusions and offer Ts&Cs apply^

Fee will also be increased from $60/yr to $90 /yr effective 3 February 2025

  • Rejected for this card despite having good income, no debts etc.

  • +1

Guys I haven't got a single bonus point desposited into my Qantas Freq Flyer acc, any advice or anyone on the same boat? Card registered in Sept 2024.

    • same but with card registration in Oct 2024

    • unfortunately you signed up under the old T&Cs, hence your timeframe is within 90 days after the 4th 30 day period since the account opening date. Note that 30-day period annoyingly does not equal to the statement period.

  • +1

Wish we got the bonus points sooner… depressing still having nothing total of 4 months into the card.

  • Has anyone received their bonus 50k after the 4 months have lapsed? My 4th month is coming up and hoping to cancel as soon as points land so I don’t incur any card fee..

  • +2

My 50k points have been debited into my freq flyer acc!

    • @I Smell Pennies - how soon after the 4th statement did the points land mate?

      • +1

Well I signed up in early Sept. And got it start of Feb.

      • +1

@Crowing sorry for super late reply

    • Still waiting for my points. Signed up in October, so expecting sometime before May 2025

      • @marcusxyz this month or worst case next month max

  • Not sure why I've only received 38k points on my recent statement despite hitting the spend requirement for all four months

  • I opened the card around Nov 2024, and I see Comm bank Award with the description 'Adjusted' of +125,000 points in mid-March 2025. The Comm bank Award should be automatically transferred into Qantas points at the end of the March statement. I still wonder why I have 125,000 instead of 90,000 Comm bank Award. But, once I got the Qantas points, I will close the card and move on the churn the new card anyway.
