MG4 EVs Is This The Revolution We Have Been Waiting for?

Australia has a new most affordable electric car. The base-model MG 4 has been slashed to $30,990 drive-away …

https://www.drive.com.au/news/2024-mg-4-price-slashed-septem…

This is cheaper then a base model Toyota Corrolla which at time of posting is $36,443

https://www.toyota.com.au/corolla/hatch/prices

The biggest issue i had with EVs was the initial cost but it seems to have hit a point where it is price competitive with ICE vehicles so much so it feels like the tide might finally be turning in their favor in Australia

Now i know for some people these Chinese cars a 'shit boxes' and 'unrealiable' but the fact they are break new price floors every year will mean even legacy brands will need to lower prices to compete at the lower-middles ends of the market

I find it amazing how the cheapest EVs but a few years ago where over 60k its halved in a short period of time and charging and battery technology seems to be 'improving'

So my question is would you buy an EV for your next car if the costs are price competitive with ICE cars?

      • Did you listen to Howard and go and buy houses? I'm surprised you're complaining.

        • Obviously Howard’s comments were directed at the LNP elite, not the common folk.

      • Little johnny should be in jail.

      It's stupid…

"I'm not buying an EV until they are the same price as an ICE car…"
      MG: "hold my beer, fam"
      *surprized Pikachu*
"OMG, look at these EV prices falling so much, they are worthless…"

      • +5

When sky news tells them that it's ok to buy Ev cars they'll change their mind

        • +1

That won't happen unless Murdoch buys shares in Tesla. Maybe that's why Elon has gone all rightwing crazy ….

      • +1

yep, My next car was absolutely going to be an ICE. Now seriously reconsidering, don't need to purchase till early 2025 but I suspect EV or Hybrid will be in the mix now where as 6 months ago I would have said not a chance.

    • Queue the anti Ev crowd complaining that Ev prices dropping means they're worthlessness

ill never understand why anyone would be anti EV - of course you can critise the short falls but at these price points that are great value

when the cheapest EV was the Nissan Leaf at like 50k i kind of understood the arguement EVs are just too expensive, it but the last 2 years EVs are probably more compelling to buy then 'most' ICE cars for the average persons daily needs

      • -3

It would just cost too much to add an extra garage. I still need my ICE when I need to drive anywhere.

Need a really good subsidy for the house extension and charging station.

Now back to the e-Scooter and bike thread…

with the retarded petrol prices, with the 10 year warranty and the 31k brand new drive away price, and alot of praise on accurate range reporting, if i was in the market i dont think id pick another car over this one. 10 years warranty is crazy

    • +2

forget resale.. if you have the right set up at home the money saved on petrol would buy the car by the time the warranty expires

      • exactly, a 13kw system is becoming really affordable

        • and the battery rebates on the way, bring it on

          • +1

@May4th: also you can power tools and tvs etc with this car if your out camping or whatever, unlike the tesla,

    • +2

Only if you are currently in the market for a new car and are going to spend that money anyway.

I might have to look at getting a new car soon, but if I wasn't, spending $30k to save a few thousand a year on petrol does not make sense. Yes after 10 years you would have saved enough to buy another car but you also spent $30k to begin with.

People use savings by not buying petrol as justification all the time, forgetting the fact that they have to outlay a lot of money that they otherwise weren't going to. But if you are in the market for a new car then it absolutely makes sense.

      • yes only if u are in the market as was written, or if you have a piece of shit commodore v8 or falcon v8 and still spend 200 bucks a week on fuel

  • Probably get one of these next year or similar when I get a job that has the salary sacrificing.

Also in need of an additional car (prefer ev), but need a mid to large sized SUV. Anything on the horizon?

If you're an enthusiast, I understand the love for ICE but other than that (or a real need for range and refills) it seems like a no brainer to get an EV as your next car.

    • +2

Mg zs is an suv and upgrade on the way

    • +1

Yeah plenty to choose in the mid size Bev over the next 6 months

    • lots of options, Kia EV3 just released, EV5 on the way, literally dozens of chinese BEVs on the way which will keep a lid on the pricing

  • Guaranteed they wont be using these in Shanghai anytime soon 8-)

  • The question is when will NSW government find a way to tax you on km driven as more people move to electric cars and their fuel tax income decreases

    • My thinking - you will need to declare your annual km every year with registration and it becomes part of random roadside checks. Several countries in the EU have 'financial police' whose sole focus is tax compliance, it will happen here by necessity.

The alternative is everyone pays a higher registration which means city people subsidise the extensive rural road network. Considering we all rely on these roads partially it's not a terrible solution.

      • Kms are recorded as part of pink slip so could be based on previous year although would play into buying a car

    • Victoria had this and it was found that the tax was illegal because the fuel excise was a Federal tax or something like that.

      • Governments make the laws so I’m sure it will be made “legal” at some point in the not too distant future.

I just want an EV that's not an IoT appliance, nor has a fat touchscreen on the dash.

    • Read this all i thought was
'I just want milk, that taste like real milk'

      • I doubt that stuff actually tastes like real milk anyway. You want fancy, go Farmhouse gold

        • i think OP didnt get the Joke - and this is Ozbargain mate im on the home coles/woolworths/audi stuff mate

F—k me i even buy caged eggs to save the 20-30cents that the free ranged ones cost extra

MG are owned by SAIC who is owned by Communist China Party.

No thanks, CCP scoring tax on products made there is one thing, but buying a car straight from them is a bit too far.

So my question is would you buy an EV for your next car if the costs are price competitive with ICE cars?

For sure, if the manufacturer has a record of decent human rights, forced labour etc (there are reports available into the whole supply chains of many companies), headquartered in a democratic society, and not owned by government.

    • like Tesla?

No issues with VW and its ties to Nazis?

      • +1

All my power tools are Bosch, I learnt that their dudes were anti nazi and involved in a plot to assassinate Hitler.

Mitsubishi probably holds the dubious honour of being the only car company that has been nuked, Mitsubishi had torpedo factories in Nagasaki when the bomb fell.

        • +1

on that note, have you also researched each company's industrial relations record? surely you don't want to support a company that rips off its workers? what about their environmental foot print, do you not want your children to have a planet to inherit? what about the political beliefs of their CEO and board? are they a woman basher? and do they offer equal opportunities for both genders and are they LGBTQIA2S+ friendly? better look into those before buying any of their products

          • @May4th: That’s why I haven’t commented about Tesla, I haven’t researched them much.

That’s one of the glorious things about a free press and western style companies. They have shareholders, journalists and snow flakes to answer to.

            I’ve never purchased VW.

and do they offer equal opportunities for both genders and are they LGBTQIA2S+ friendly? better look into those before buying any of their products

True, price isn’t always the deciding factor, especially when I can do some due diligence into the background.

I’ve never really felt comfortable directly supporting shady operations, so I avoid them.

            • +1

@2025: If you are sincere and do not arbitrarily choose what criteria to follow and turn a blind eye to the other issues I would absolutely respect that, not many people can put their money where their mouth is.

hey fair enough im not having ago at you there are cetain companies i dont give money too - nothing to do with politics but more the social poltical preechy/Woke views of certain companies i cant stand if possible avoid like herps

everyone has their own way but the only way to hurt a company is with $

like you with Bosch i have certain companies that i agree with that i am 'more willing' to spend money on - Im a massive fan of Elon i'd buy a Tesla over other EV brands tomorrow just for the sheer fact i have the high respect for the owner.

      • +2

That's an historical issue. Cars made in 2024 by slaves of the CCP is a now issue.

        • +2

It really does make it hard for traditional companies to compete, on a cost perspective, particularly when many consumers will simply turn a greedy blind eye as long as they get to save a few dollars. CCP knows that. Paying CCP to have slaves make my car? I just can’t even.

Not to mention the increasing carbon emissions over there, while in the US they are on the decline.

We have countries like Germany passing laws about forced labour, and it seems that VW, in a partnership with SAIC, have recently been caught up in those practices.

  • EVs are very obviously becoming mainstream now so expect more competition. We recently bought a new ICE car but pretty sure our next one will be EV. Father in law has one and says it costs him about $8 to charge it to the equivalent of a full tank of petrol.

  • +1

I’m not interested in EV as I’m not interested in paying that much for a car. Both my cars were around 10k so that rules out ev for a long while still

  • +3

Good, the amount of morons out their paying $50k for a base model rav4 is ridiculous.

    • +3

Well, maybe they just like the car. But what I do question is people waiting months or even years for a Toyota.

In May 2024 when I was new car shopping the waiting time for a Corolla hybrid was 6 to 9 months. Yaris Cross hybrid? 12 to 18 months. No matter how good the vehicle is I wouldn't wait that long. People likewise have waited a year or more for a RAV4. I ended up buying a Mazda where the wait time was two weeks.

  • -1

How are people finding the MG brand? I've been googling and it seems they're doing pretty decent and it's a good brand to buy. I like the 10 year warranty and their car range seems to lean towards SUVs but in the next 3-5 years my 2015 Mazda CX3 will die I recon……. MG seems the next go to brand?

    • it's not fantastic, especially the ICE cars are probably where the korean cars were 10-15 years ago. there are compromises but can't beat the price

      • +1

Thanks. Guess I have to test drive one.

Pretty much pay for what you get

    • +2

I just bought an MG ZS EV. I'd say 99% of the car is great. There's the odd 1% that needs refinement, as the reviewers say. For example the air vents are silver which cause a reflection in the side mirrors. The lane keep assist works but is jerky. The dash makes a very small creaking sound. But the fundamentals are solid, such as acceleration, steering, braking, ride and cabin noise.

  • +1

where's the option of "have been reaping the rewards of an EV for nearly a year now"

  • Hey all those ev owners who are going thru tyres ,
Black Friday is something like 40% off at bob jane or Bridgestone , you’ll see the new posts soon enough.
Also brake pads are pretty easy to change yourself if you have a trolley jack and some jack stands.

    • +1

You very rarely change the brake pads on an EV - they're only used in emergencies and for the last couple of kms/hr before a complete stop (in fact some cars have to periodically deploy them just to clean the rotors). EVs mostly brake regeneratively (ie use the motor as a generator to recharge some battery).

  • saw what must have been a C10 on the back of car carrier yesterday, I'm reading the badge thinking WTF is that?
    https://www.whichcar.com.au/news/2025-leapmotor-c10-specific…
    .

    • The styling makes it look like a Mitsubishi Outlander with sc-fi body kit. If it's priced well (that article suggests sub-$50k) and has decent driving dynamics, it might be a real contender.

The interior colour in those photos is absolutely ghastly.
