Must control myself, my car can still run. There will be better offers once i need a new car.

    • Exact same boat, seems great but my car is well looked after, but is over 10yrs old.

My biggest concern is the range and convenience of charging without splashing out cash on a home charger, solar etc

      • +1

people have negotiated and got the home charger chucked in free

      • +2

Car comes with a 10amp slow charger, which may be enough for you. You don't need a dedicated home charger, solar etc. See if you're eligible for an ev electricity plan with ovo, agl etc which offers you a 8c/kwh rate and you'll be on your way charging cheaply while you sleep.

        • How long does it take to slow charge it though to full though?

          • +6

@OZTechGuy: 51kWh battery being charged at 10A (2.4kW) is about 23 hours from 0-100%, assuming small losses along the way. But that's a very unrealistic scenario, because there's no reason to wait until it's totally empty to recharge.

The MG4's efficiency is ~14kWh/100km, so you'll need about 6 hours of charging at 10A for each 100km you drive. If your regular commute is 100km per day, you can recharge back to 100% every night during off-peak hours, and it will cost you $1.12 on an AGL or Ovo EV plan. (In round figures, 1c per km)

If your commute is considerably shorter than 100km, you can go several days before recharging.

I did this for about 6 months before getting a 15A plug - this just means if I go on a longer trip, I can still recharge overnight at cheap rates. A dedicated charger would be even better, but I'm waiting until my renovations happen so I can get all the electrical upgrades done at once.

            • @klaw81: Thanks for the detailed explanation. Ye i was thinking it would trickle charge daily and cant really see why id use up to 100km daily, more so half that. Also we have a main petrol vehicle.

Have you noticed any other issues or regrets with your mg4?

              • +2

@OZTechGuy: If you ALSO have a petrol vehicle, then the EV is an absolute no brainer as your second vehicle.

If you are only doing less than 100Km per day (which is the vast majority of Australians…) then you don't even need to think about range or charge times. Just switch to the OVO/AGL plan, tell it to charge nightly at midnight, and voila.

            • @klaw81: Another question, the 15a outlet seems very good, do you know if the trickle cable provided by MG would support 15a or is it rated at max 10a? Thanks

              • +1

                @OZTechGuy:

Do you know if the trickle cable provided by MG would support 15a or is it rated at max 10a?

I've never had a good look at one myself, and information online on what MG supply to Australian customers is surprisingly scarce on this product. However, from what I can see, the MG Home Charger kit maxes out at 10A.

I expect there are aftermarket chargers that could deliver 15A if you really want that.

Went to John Hughes in Perth, only had black and white left and it would be 3 week wait to receive them, would not budge on price at $30,999.

Car was nice to drive but the seat was high for me at 6 ft 3, I did try to drop it but it didn't do much.
The infotainment was good and felt responsive, though I must admit the overall quality of the interior and especially some panels on the outside didn't look great but for the price it was still good.

I'm 50/50 if I should go ahead, the trade-in offer was shockingly low so my only option would be to try sell my car privately though I can't imagine they'll have stock by the time it sells…

    • +1

Just called John Hughes VicPark, they say I can put non-refundable deposit for silver and it takes 3-4 months to arrive.
Not comfortable if deposit is non-refundable

      • They are bullshitting you.
I just spoke to Brighton and they checked all the colours in the Melbourne car pool at the docks - Sterling Silver is definitely there.
Was it Camden Grey? That one is OOS

        • They say they got Grey colour in stock.

But you are talking about Brighton MG which is in SA. We are in WA.

There was lady on phone (cant remember her name)

          • @Panpanw: I was talking about Brighton Vic lol sorry - I was confused by 'VicPark'

      • The guy I spoke with said the $30,999 price would only be for cars delivered before October 31st, anything delivered after that would be the full $38,999 price and you had to order by September 30th.
I get it's a good deal but wasn't a fun experience dealing with them, so it's a bit concerning if there are problems with the car down the track…

        • +1

Wow the team I spoke to said price would b ongoing - they are all different!

        • +4

On MG website, small clause said order has to be delivered by 30/09/2024

          • +2

@Panpanw: The MG website also says that the offer must end by 31/10/2024.

        • YMMV depending on dealership. That said: sales often is independent of service. I've had a horrible sales experience a few years ago with one MG dealership, and in the end purchased elsewhere. But took it to their service centre because they were a lot closer to home, and all was fine there.

  • +1

Went in for a look and found out despite MG4 looking bigger on the outside than Honda Jazz it's in fact smaller inside. Less space for the driver and rear passenger, and worse quality fabric on the seats. I also noticed the stop light leds on the back are too small and not as well visible as on other cars. If you're upgrading from a small car this car might end up being even smaller.

    • -1

The boot is bigger on the mg4 though. How you know if the seat is worse quality when the car only been in Australia for less than 2 years. Isn’t seat subject to wear and tear?

You can keep your jazz and continually pay the lifetime petrol subscription.

      • +4

Honda Jazz 2008-2015 boot volume: 399 litres.
        MG4 boot volume: 363 litres.

        MG4's boot is smaller.

The seat fabric quality you can feel by touching it with your palm. It's better than Haval Jolion which is the lowest of the low but worse than any other non-chinese car.

I'm just sharing my experience. I'm not here to praise the Jazz.

        • -4

The Honda Jazz has a boot space size of 354 Litres according to car guide , Googling and according to ChatGPT. Don’t know where you got your numbers from.

Noticed that the jazz has bigger middle tunnel than the mg4. Your knees will be raise higher, not exactly a good spot for the passenger

          • +2

@ChickenAdobo: Honda Jazz has different generations which have different boot sizes. Hence why I specified the 2008-2015 model year. That model has a boot size of 399 litres. The number came from Google.

Anyways, this topic is about MG4. Great car but built to a price like all cars. No miracles here.

            • -2

@beesider: Mate you are wrong on the boot size….

              • @ChickenAdobo: Google:
                honda jazz boot volume 2010

                Response:
The Jazz has a larger boot than most cars in the class above with a minimum capacity of 399 litres.

                • -2

@beesider: Look like 2015 is different to 2010. If you have a 2010 jazz. That very long in the tooth. It a 14 year old car. I would be selling it if ever any particular maintenance outweighs the market value of the car.

Keep up on top of the maintenance and maybe one day an EV will be in the sub 20k range. Maybe you are not ready for next transition.

                  • +2

@ChickenAdobo: Why are you (quite condescendingly) moving the goal posts?

You’re clearly ESL but hey, not being a prick is universal.

                    • -8

@jackary: Typical racist and xenophobic comment. Always the English comments.

                      • -1

@ChickenAdobo: How would you prefer people to highlight your defensiveness and inability to concede a point?

                      • -1

@ChickenAdobo: Wow, that is hilarious. I’m not taking the bait here man, guess I’m racist now.

                        • @jackary: The way you mentioned ESL can be taken as a put down. I think it was inflammatory

                          • -3

@YRT: I mentioned ESL because I think some of what OP has said could just be interpreted as being a bit lost in translation, other parts were unquestionably rude, regardless of your first language.

I truly couldn’t care less if OP is black, white or blue.

                            • -1

@jackary: It is inflammatory… it like I go to a Chinese person and mockedly say “Ching Chong Ching Chong fu fu fu ni hao” and then say “ speak English “. That a put down and can taken as being a racist.

                              • @ChickenAdobo: Haaaaang on a second. But I didn’t say that, now did I. Don’t put words in my mouth.

I think you’re being awfully sensitive, which is ironic considering your own comments in this thread.

I don’t need to explain myself any further, if you feel I am racist then you are welcome to feel that way.

                                • @jackary: Allow me to adjudicate:

                                  1. He has a point, comparing the boot size to a 14 year old car and not the current model is moot, it's different enough that they aren't really in the same class anymore. I am not one of them, but most people I know what a new car

                                  2. Yeah the ESL comment is not one to make in an argument, might fly when telling a story to your mates but not when you are talking about the person you are arguing with

                                  3. The reason you both disagree is you both won't concede the point. You are technically both right, but you both think the others point is irrelevant. This is on both of you, but it can be just left at that. I have this dilemma, the MG4 boot is smaller than my Leaf, otherwise I would be happy to upgrade. If the boot was big enough to carry the largest thing I wanted to carry, I would be fine with it, but that's different for everyone.

                                  • @Jackson: Thanks Judge Jackson

                                    • @jackary: Yeah I stepped out of myself for a second 😅 I just felt like this wasn't two trolls arguing like it usually is, but I think you both just stepped over the mark a bit. For the record, I don't think it was fair to call you racist either, there are lots of times someone just doesn't make their point clear enough

Has anyone managed to find the PDS or further information on the mg 10 year warranty. The website is very concise on what it covers and can't see a pdf link to anymore detailed document.

I asked to ask about battery degradation and whether 70% SOH or similar is warranted and got the below reply:

"The warranty covers manufacturing defects during normal use. All lithium-ion batteries naturally degrade over time (reducing vehicle range), with the rate of degradation influenced by range of factors. The warranty does not apply to battery degradation unless this degradation is caused by manufacturing defect".

Didn't really answer my question on SOH.

    • I did a chat with them, they were useless. Basically same reply you got.

They promised to pass the question on to some specialist, but I doubt I'll ever hear back. Never have had a reply on any chat question, in almost 4 years of MG ownership…

That said: ACL is a very strong law. With every manufacturer that publishes a number setting the cut-off at 70%, any car maker that doesn't spell it out will be forced to apply the same. Might take some threats of taking them to court, but no doubt they'd either cave at that point, or you'd win the case.

  • Yes, leaving it nice and spongy and open to all kinds of denials and interpretations later not used to the Australian sun

  • Hi, does anyone know where to purchase a rear spoiler and side panels?

    • China, I am going to do it….And all sort of accessories

What side panels are you after?

      But………..few problems:
No rear speakers - no wiring
Can get Original Bose Amplifier. Don't know how to install
Rear spoiler gives good looking but reduce range (True or not?)

      • Post some links !

        • Overseas website….Links won't work here.

          • @Panpanw: How much roughly for the rear spoilers?

          • @Panpanw: Aliexpress rear spoiler around $800 with free postage so maybe best go for the Excite 51 for biggest savings over the Essence 64, wondering if possible to buy driver electric seats lol only other item I don't like about the Excite range, Android and IPhone wireless is another feature missing on all MG4 range but that's easily fixed any other fixes needed for the Excite 51 anyone can think of? 🤔

            https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005006416055340.html?

    • There’s a guy on the mg4 owners aus fb group which is selling them. $900

      https://youtu.be/ktDlqY7iIDc?si=azwn5URCfKcw0OC1

  • Anyone got a good deal in Sydney?

  • Dealer advised the promo will run until end of October, not EOM.
AFTER I ordered in RED, the sales team claim to have received a memo saying no more stock of WHITE\GREY.
There were 2 other buyers in the showroom making a deal on the MG4 so I feel they will sell.

    • +1

Wow every salesman telling a different story re the end of the promo

      • +1

FYI: Checked the Web and on the main https://mgmotor.com.au/ page says "Must end October 31st".

        • +1

I’ve mentioned this three times in this thread, but have been politely told I was wrong, because one dealer denied this. I also emailed MG on Monday morning, but have had no re-lay. My dealer also says 31 October.

          • +1

@barryquinn: Ok, here's my personal prediction, based only on what my gut tells me after having had MG EVs for almost 4 years now:

When they started it, MG Australia intended to run the promotion until October 31st, hence the banners.

If sales really are going as strong as dealerships suggest (meaning they don't just make it up to cause a sense of urgency about stocks running low), then someone high up will decide to end the promo early. The official reason given will be 'all available stock sold'.

Once the next car carrier docks, the car will be back on promo. Perhaps at a slightly higher price, say $32,990. Rinse & repeat a couple of times. Then they permanently lower the price to something in the mid 30s.

  • +2

Consulted with the MG online team about the special price. They informed me that the promotion was scheduled to end by the end of September, which contradicts the information on the MG website. Additionally, I'm still unclear about the specifics of the 10-year warranty for the EV battery. The staff couldn't provide any further information regarding to the battery under the warranty.

    • Even though it says 'real person', the quality of the chat could easily be surpassed by an AI. All they do is look at information from the website and quote it. No matter how wrong or incomplete it is.

I personally wanted clarification on the warranty details too, but in the absence of any useful reply I am happy to rely on ACL. By promising a 10 year warranty, claiming it is the best in the country, and with basically all other makes having a 70% cut-off (for 8 years), they very much backed themselves into a corner to match that cut-off.

If it is of any help: in Europe MG specify 70% for their warranty there (only 7 years though)

That said: getting the actual battery state of health (SOH) would require a full charge/discharge test with proper measuring equipment. The figure the BMS reports via OBD2 is not correct.

    • +2

Might I suggest that Occam's razor be applied to this differing info.

Essentially the sales people, who tend to have monthly targets - are motivated to get a deal done ASAP, in negotiations & sales it's know that deadlines make deals. Hence say a deal is ending sooner than reality - and you're more likely to catalyse potential sales.

Otherwise prospects might drag out till late OCT, hoping for a better deal elsewhere etc. So the simplest reason sales folks say is they want to COMPEL buyers to act now!

MG has no such incentive - they want the vehicles sold ASAP - but are limited by supply only, so they say when the deal ends time wise - and if sold out before then - so be it.

      • Makes Sense.
Number 2 rule of sales is 'ABC' - 'always be closing' - always looking for the shortest path to a signed contract
AKA bullshit is not an impediment

  • +1

Pulled the trigger this morning - Pennant Hills MG. Was told after I made the purchase that "I got the last white one in NSW".

    • Congrats and happy electric motoring. You will love the car.

    • Congratulations for the purchase. What price did you pay? Got any extra for free?

      • +1

30990, just some carpet mats. Did it all over the phone before work this morning and just wanted to lock it in as the stock seems to have been disappearing pretty rapidly from the dealers I've been keeping an eye on, so I didn't push hard for anything.

    • +1

I just bought an orange one from Pennant Hills MG - they sold a red one five minutes before and a blue one earlier today.

    • Have you found any local ceramic coating deals, etc?

  • Anyone hear when the next shipment is likely to arrive?

    • +2

The dealer I bought from said my car is in a carrier arriving in 2 weeks. And the next shipment is 4 months.

      • The shipment in 4 months won't qualify for this deal as the car must be delivered by 31st October.

  • +4

Just ordered one today . $30990 + free paint + car mat + 3 free servicing . Cannot negotiate to get a wall charger thrown in as well.

    • Congrats and happy electric motoring

    • +1

      Which dealership?

    • +2

Did a test drive, the dealer is playing hardball but said if I can show a screenshot of your invoice they will match your price and extras… any chance you would be willing to snap a photo and anonymise it for a fellow ozbargainer?! Cheers for any help!

    • also keen to hear where you got this deal and if you can show proof, even better.
Our dealer in WA flat out refused any extras.

      • -1

WA already got better pricing due to state rebate . I m in Vic and there is no additional rebate .

    • Wish I'd seen this before buying

      hahahahaah

    • No dealer in WA willing to give free paint

      • Yep, we tried too and ended up buying white.

    • Can you please share which dealership this was from

  • +1

Anyone in WA signed up for the Synergy Electric Vehicle Add On plan ? Wondering if it's worth it on a small EV like the Excite 51 for someone driving no more than 200km per week and who can often charge at home during the super off peak (9am to 3pm) @ 8.4 cents / Kwh. I'm worried that using high energy appliances (Aircon /heating/oven) between the peak times 3pm to 9pm @ 52.5 cents / Kwh will offset the savings from charging the EV during super off peak periods.

    • Big difference. My daily anytime charge is $8.49 and my ev daily charge is now $3.80 to $6. I have a 10.3 kW solar and use the kettle and air fryer during 3 pm to 9 pm.

    • You would have to calculate using your actual usage values. I looked at the ovo EV plan in Brisbane and would have been a tiny bit worse off because of higher charges for normal usage.

  • +1

Went and impulse purchased one of these.

Sales rep was great - but genuinely didn't care if I bought one or not - they were almost sold out.

In the past getting paint protection, tinting and interioir protection from the dealer was a no no - anyone got suggestions of where to go to get it done?

    • Some detailing places do all three, while others ceramic protection and interior but not tinting. Google map car detailing should have a few 4.5 stars or higher with many reviews.

  • Also note - website no longer shows the promo pricing

  • +2

Very tempted. Checked one out today but I really liked the Essence and XPower variants. Tempted to wait for those to come down in price, by a significant amount (35ishK and 40ishK on-road respectively) though I'm sure the Excite 51 is great too. I have a Cerato GT and am a bit spoilt by more of the mod-cons

    • +1

A few people scored XPower variant for 40k. Won’t hurt your luck to try.

      • +1

Was tempted for the XPower too, though its range is only 400kms, Excite 51 is 350kms while the long range is 530kms, just the Colbolt batteries with the Essence and above models (Xpower included) recommended mosttly to charge/keep charge of colbolt batteries around 20% to 80%, so a loss of 40% range, say the long range would be a range of only 318kms from 530kms but my thinking 🤔 id go frequently 100% full charge, well is one going to own the car for say 7 years? the warranty for the batteries i think is about that?, well my thinking next persons problem when one sells their EV car, unless there are records stored in car to show how the vehicle has been charged which would effect resell value? will it show also battery degradation, etc? certainly end of life of a EV vehicles batteries will be like ones mobile phone we're its not worth replacing the battery, and like ones mobile whole vehicle will end up as e-waste, well most likely will be worth more for the other parts of EV, unless EV batteries dramatically drop in price say next decade or so

        Anyones thoughts?

Edit: reviews on XPower for handling haven't been too great well what I've come across on youtube reviews, extra weight with the extra front motor, but what 0 too 100kms tad over 3 seconds is certainly awesome, but what roughly $14k over the Excite for the XPower, And Excite roughly 7 seconds for 0 to 100kms umm my reasoning for buying an EV was pure investment over owning an ICE vehicle so cheaper the better for me since my weekly travel isn't that high

Edit again,.. I give up on my punctuation, hope i make sense with above lol 😆

        • All good. The XPower is just good value for speed. Nothing can come close for a new, dealer demo or slightly used supercar speed Bev

The excite is just good for value for less money spend. The rest of the lineup fill their target market. Essence being NMC and feature packed. The long range fill the cheapest long range 500km plus Bev on the market. Overall you can’t go wrong with any of the choices.

          • @ChickenAdobo: True all MG4 models are at a great value at the moment against their competition (obvisously wont last long but reckon this will happen again in future, hopefully lolz), really comes down to ones circumstances my situation buying an EV as pure investment only, obvisously i got to like the car also if I'm going to spend that much money, I'm poor lolz, basically im gojng against what i can save over my current ICE car, petrol, services, wear and tear etc, say savings investment over 5 to 10 years of driving, but my travelling too work and other travelling doesnt't justify as yet buying one, say even the Excite 51 at $26k, i do about 250 kms per week but can see the more i travel the more ill save with an EV, especially once my place gets solar on our roof, i certainly like the look of the MG4 range, BYD seal would be next in line for looks and especially better technology and features, obvisously price is higher then the MG4, certainly been tempting to buy an EV, thankfully ive been holding back, as like any technology device, prices can change dramatically due to future technology being better, for EV's better batteries can make a big difference of overall price of EV vehicle, why i think BYD blade batteries has had a bif effect on EV market pricings

            Edit: bla bla bla 😀

  • Just wentvto Essendon Fields dealer to demo. The prices start from $41K. What am I missing?

Will work though I'd advise one with a switch to turn off/on, well they can get hot left on all the time, unless find one that doesnt get too hot

So were is this USB port rear of car?

Edit: Also easy to wire one to the 12 volt line within vehicle and also the USB has a 5 volt line

        • Its behind the centre console, its low though not high
