                  • @choofa: None of the points you make pass straightforward logic. These high performing contractors can't get hired as full time workers even though they have proven themselves to be the most productive member in the team?

They don't want job security, it was always available but they preferred to get paid more and took the risk of being unemployed for short periods of time.

I didn't think anyone could defend the rort going on. We are talking about paying an assistant director 200k p.a. People getting $50 an hour to fill in web forms over the phone. You are fortunate the general public don't understand these things, people outside the public sector aren't going to shed tears for you

                    • @greatlamp: Oh yeah the public service moved that quick. Just hired the consultants and contractors who worked there…
Most contractors I know got chopped by their companies the minute the departments stopped paying the bills.
Have you seen the process of hiring in gov? Takes about 3 months for a panel to be selected before they even start.

                • @greatlamp:

You work in the public service but you spout stereotypes like someone who hasn't

I've worked in both state and federal as a permanent, contractor and consultant various times over nearly 30 years. I've seen it all and yes I am cynical but only because those stereotypes are true. You don't know the pain until you are a manager trying to deal with half a dozen of them.

                  • @choofa: @greatlamp and @choofa - Any contribution to MG4 price reduction in this thread ?

My obligatory comment: I was going to novate lease the ORA but my procastination works in my favour for once. This MG is the car.

      Mainly from Chinese EV cars.
      https://www.technologyreview.com/2023/02/21/1068880/how-did-…

"In 2007, the industry got a significant boost when Wan Gang, an auto engineer who had worked for Audi in Germany for a decade, became China’s minister of science and technology. Wan had been a big fan of EVs and tested Tesla’s first EV model, the Roadster, in 2008, the year it was released. People now credit Wan with making the national decision to go all-in on electric vehicles. Since then, EV development has been consistently prioritized in China’s national economic planning. "

"From 2009 to 2022, the government poured over 200 billion RMB ($29 billion) into relevant subsidies and tax breaks."

I’m crying into my soup tonight at the price drop.
    I’ve done 18,000 K’s in my MG4 and it hasn’t missed a beat.

It’s amazing value at 30K. I came from an i30 1.6 Turbo and the MG4 Excite 51 is a great little steerer, faster than the sticker rating of 7.7 seconds and it’s RWD fun. This car is the complete opposite of what the Petrol MG’s deliver.

It has enough room for use as a 2nd Car and is perfect for my 180km commute a couple of times a week.

Range - 320KM on the Mixed Freeway / Urban commute. Putting around town only I’ll get above the claim more like 380KM.

If you are simply flogging it point to point down the freeway doing *cough *cough 110km per hr with a headwind you’ll see this turn in 250KM.

Whatever fuel economy you get from your petrol car reverse it for an electric. Freeway = lower K’s. Urban = More K’s

Stereo isn’t the best with only 4 speakers at the front but you can adjust them to sound much better than its default setting but yeah wish it had rear speakers. Other than that it’s the only thing I missed when I went for the 51 Excite vs the 64 Essence.

Test drive it on a twisty road and you’ll see why the journos like it.

    • How'd the home charger work for ya thru winter?

      • +3

        Perfectly fine.

Charging setup cost me $750 Total for a 15A PowerPoint and on its own dedicated circuit run across the opposite side of the house including a 15A Charger.

8c per KWh 12-6am EV plan. Scheduled Charge puts in 120kms of range for around $1.40. Solar charge when I’m at home during the day.

Other great functions are I’d could remotely turn the heater on via the app before I get in the car so it’s nice and toasty.

Has a Digital Key function so when I took both the car keys with me my wife could then drive it with the app.

        • Not sure why you'd take two sets of keys, but OK!

Anyway, have they fixed any of the software updates with the MG4? Seems like the thing that is really letting these cars down is the lack of fixing some pretty annoying but basic issues.

  • +6

    These are great value cars.
The only people who don't like them are brand snobs.
Had a friend looking into an MG EV lately and all his kids were adamant they wanted a Tesla because MG was for peasants.
Unfortunately people care too much about brands these days.

    • Generally you get what you pay for. Dollar for dollar this is a significantly better vehicle than any Tesla.
But teslas are worth the money if you have it
Brand snobs also buy their car based on their own politics. Whether that be because they hate musk, or really it's because they want any euro car that isn't a Tesla so they can pretend they are better because of something meaningless they want to pretend really matters

      • It isn't a euro car tho

        • +1

          You missed his point.
You've got idealogue lefties out there who don't like the fact Musk lets his opinions known, they'll disregard Teslas as a result.
If only they knew the political beliefs and leanings of the Euro brand CEOs they buy instead. Hint, they're basically all older white blokes who would highly likely to be more conservative than Musk, yet they will never have it known. Musk isn't beholden to anyone. I don't agree with Musk on everything, I respect him for putting his thoughts out there to be criticised though.

          • @FXx:

I respect him for putting his thoughts out there to be criticised though.

Putting tweets out then immediately deleting them lol

            • @serpserpserp: Yep, no doubt he makes mistakes like all of us. Your point?

              • @FXx: No that is how he puts his thoughts out there. Very often. Doesn't really stand behind a lot of things he says.

  • +6

Gosh these cars are really making it hard for me to justify spending an extra $30K on a model Y… I guess the waiting game of buying an EV continues

    • The soon to be refreshed model y and the many coming competitors will make it even harder.
Don't rush to buy a car ever unless you absolutely have to
And if you had to then this deal is actually a bloody good bargain

  • It is obviously auto transmission. Is there any manual EV in the market right now?

    • +4

Unless you were retro fitting an ev power plant to a manual gearbox adapter plate, there would be no reason for a manual ev. They don’t have a gearbox. The motors generally don’t require it, unless needed for a very specific cause.

      • -2

I’ve never understood why ev don’t use gears, wouldn’t it help the same way it helps a normal engine?…

        • +2

The instant availability of all the torque from electric removes the need for a gearbox. ICE has a narrower power delivery band that requires fine tuning with a gearbox to deliver that/match that, to the wheels.

        • Because the engineering is completely different when you use electricity. It is why your iPhone doesn't have a petrol engine in it.

  • +1

If V2H was an option this would be a no brainer.

    • Battery with wheels

    • +4

I don't understand why prices for home batteries aren't dropping yet

      • No China dumping yet….. :P

      • Maybe China is putting more priority on dominating the EV market, limiting availability of materials for home batteries. They will want to maintain their head start with EVs and make it difficult for brands from other nations to compete.

  • Wish I didn't have almost two years left on my loan for my ICE car, would have loved to jump on this!

    • You can, sell it. I saw a demo with less than 5k km 25k drive away. Count the petrol savings and decide.

      • Problem is trying to sell in this market is not great, had my car for just over 3 years so the big hit in depreciation has already happened but even then it would be hard to sell.
Hasn't stopped me booking in for a test drive but!

        • +2

It's not going to get any easier to sell it the longer you leave it

        • I think MG is trying to distort the market with this price drop. If you can trade the current car in and perhaps get the WA rebate to soften the blow. Add the yearly petrol cost and see what the spreadsheet look like. RACWA cost me. $76 a month.

          • @ChickenAdobo: So my current car I still owe $10,700 and could sell it for about $19,000, less rebate and it would effectively cost $9,000 to upgrade.
Fuel savings would be about $2000 per year with insurance costing $10 extra per month than my current car.

Not bad, I'll test drive asap and check for finance deals.

      • Brave man given you drive a BYD

      • where did you see this?

  • +2

I hope BYD respond. I want a Dolphin, and would love it a bit cheaper.

    • +4

      This is better.

      • As in the MG4 is better? I’ve driven both, and the BYD feels like much better quality.

        • +3

Dolphin has a better quality in interior but in driving no, the Mg4 is rear wheel drive and doesn’t suffer from torque steer if you plant your foot down on the Dolphin at red light. The Dolphin is too soft to drive which is good to drive in urban setting but once you go onto the high/free way it a boaty ride and the steering wheel will feel vague.

          • @ChickenAdobo: I thought the steering on a highway in the MG4 felt bumpy and pretty awful with cruise control on.
I prefer the Dolphin, but each to their own I guess.

            • +2

@Hendot: Please for the love of God. Don’t let your buyer bias affect your judgements. Im going to quote another person who has driven both.

The worst thing for us by far about the Dolphin compared to the MG4 is the suspension, it's really soft, great over bumps around the city but at speed it just kind of vaguely floats over the road and it's pretty disconcerting. If BYD could figure out how to make the Dolphin drive as well as the MG4 they'd have a great car (for people who don't mind the quirkiness at least). - Chiefbodge

        • BYD interiors and colours are puke.

        • +1

With the Dolphin the base model is significantly under-powered with a 70kW motor (compared to 125kW in the MG4 Excite). The Premium is a neat 50% more than this.

MG's 10 year warranty on basically everything is a lot better than BYD's selective offering. MG has a dealer and service network, with BYD you've got MyCar.

And then there's the interior design. A matter of taste I guess.

Blade battery is a pro for the Dolphin, but CATL (in the MG) isn't exactly a bad choice.

My personal verdict: if I could accept the interior design I'd value the Dolphin Premium about 15% more than an MG4. Not 50%. So no contest at current prices.

  • +2

Promo page suggests price is for MY24
    https://mgmotor.com.au/form-specials/?special=39372882

  • +4

Yikes! This is going to kill all those bells ends with their used MG4 on Carsales for $35k…

This is really going to slap the new car market around… BYD don’t even have anything close to this… and I predict that the Ora from GWM is about to catch another price cut on the back of this as well…

    • I saw Mg4 as low as 25k drive away. Maybe the Ora will be even less. I can finally novated lease one for peanuts.

    • +5

What people forget is it'll greatly impact the ICE market too, potentially more than the EV market - new and used.
This budget priced EV will attract a heap into their first EV who couldn't afford Tesla or the like.

      • +1

Yeah it is market distortion for the car market. Both new and used are deeply affected. A lot of cars need a value re-check.

        • +6

My favorite is when you get on Carsales and see all these "private" sales for Tesla cars for $45~$50k… and then some dealer comes in and puts up an ad for $32~$36k.

MG selling new EV's for around the $30k mark is going to make serious inroads into eating at sales from car makers like Toyota, Hyundai, Mazda, etc. where people would say "Oh, a Chinese EV for $40k or a Hybrid Corolla for $35k…" Now, people are going to say "What? under $30k for a brand new or almost brand new EV, YOLO!!"

And this is going to affect the used market with over inflated brands like Toyota… Why buy a used, half clapped out ex-fleet Corolla Hybrid for $28k when you can get a brand new EV for $2k more.

          • +2

@pegaxs: Unfortunately some ice gearhead are in denialism regarding this new market direction.

          • +4

@pegaxs: that and new car sales people / dealers of said brands now sweating bricks after making a killing during the post-2020 lockdown era..

I say bring it on - Honda, Subaru, Toyota, et al need to sharpen their pencils quickly otherwise they're gonna be stuck with 24 plated stock in 2025 ..

  • Noticed they have the MG Charge Hub as the suggested at home charging solution. Any other home chargers for better value? Or best to stick with same brand as car??

    • +6

Nah, no reason to stay with brand. Pick whatever has the best price.

    • They are all "type 2" and set to a standard. Any "type 2" charger should work from any reputable manufacturer.

  • The price is amazing, but do people actually think there will be stock available to buy being last year's car? Just wondering for a friend ;)

    • +3

Seeing as the deal is for MY24 cars there should be plenty of stock!

  • Can you use the mobile connector from tesla to charge this?

    • -1

I wouldn't. But maybe it will work? You mean the standard outlet one I assume.

      • Yes the 8a and 12a ones

        • Yes, it will work. "Type 2 (IEC 62196)" is the standard and anything with a type 2 plug on it will be able to charge from any "type 2" EVSE.

With that being said, if you have a "Tesla" wall box, you may need to adjust the settings on it if you have it set to only charge your Tesla.

Where I go shopping, there is a pair of Tesla wall boxes and I regularly use them to top up my BYD without issue.

    • Yes, it will work fine.

  • +1

Generic question - how will this work if I stay in a unit and don't have a plug point in the basement parking ?
Is it still cheaper than petrol to charge at certain places. Drive about 250-350 KMs per week currently.

    • You should investigate public chargers near you, and assess if you are happy to charge there and how long you need to charge there and cost per kWh.

I’d say given how much you drive and no PowerPoint it’s gonna be tough

    • +2

Use PlugShare app to find suitable charging locations. If you can spare half a day to charge every week then it is cheaper than petrol by like 25%. If you got free council charger buy a type 2 adapter and use that.

    • +2

Download the plugshare app and see what public chargers are around you. Definitely won’t be as convenient as having a plug in your parking but it isn’t impossible.

    • Don't do it! You'll spend +1 hour each week charging where as ICE you'll spend 5 mins every 2 weeks

  • +6

HODL the china ev wars are only just beginning down here!!!

    • +1

At 25k dealer demo. No point holding. It already affordable.

    • +2

Agree - these are just the first shots
Coming very soon is the MGS5 - the replacement SUV of the MG EV, based on the MG 4 platform.
      https://www.carexpert.com.au/car-news/2025-mg-s5-zs-ev-repla…
      Thats my pick.

      • +1

I also read about MG S5 a few weeks ago, it looks like a good SUV. If MG can sell it at a very competitive price compared to ICE cars, that will be good for consumers.

  • What are the build dates like on these saw some were January 2024

  • Has anyone just used the 'slow' charger that comes with the car. We dont use a car much and a once a week charge, even if it takes 16-24 hours wouldn't be a problem.

The slow charger would help if you visit a friend a long way away, that way you can top up at their house before you drive home .

    Any feedback appreciated.

    • +3

You can charge it every night and not worry about it. Even if you only used 10% of the battery on a quick trip, just top it up when you are parked at home.

Don’t think in terms of time for a full charge. You will rarely use a full charge in one day of driving.

      • Thanks, yes thats great. We only drive about 150km a week, so small top ups are the go…

    • +1

Yes, it works fine. You'll get about 10km of range per hour of charge. It'll cover the daily needs of most people.

  • +5

I love the cars price war, happy customers, sad manufacturers. Point is Australia no car manufacturer…
Let’s cut the price more, who next?

    • get rid of the luxury car tax to protect the Australia car manufacturing industry

  • Vehicle to Load Functionality

Is this really fair dinkum true or just a potential function only?

    • +5

      It is an existing feature.

It requires a V2L adaptor which is bascially a Type 2 plug with a standard GPO on the other end.

I have on these and it works great. https://evchargers.com.au/product/v2l-cable/

Note that it is intended to power a few appliances, not a whole house.

      • Saw on an MG forum that people were getting up to 7kw from these. That's pretty darn good

        • +2

Yeah that is impressive but they had to change a resistor in the V2L adaptor to allow the higher current.

From factory it's rated to 2.2kW I think, and that's what your average Joe should expect to get.

      • +2

Here's the setup I plan to get installed soonish:
Victron Multiplus II GX 48/5000 ($1350)
48V 100Ah LFP battery = 5kWh (plenty of offers around $2k, but should drop a lot closer to $1k in the next few months, say $1300)
Small bits and pieces (power meter, breakers, wires) ~$500
Labour for qualified sparky to install and re-route several circuits to the output of the Victron $????

All up less than $5000, a lot less than a Powerwall, and a lot more flexible. I.e. for another $1300 the battery can be doubled to 10kWh. DIY, no need to call the sparky back, since 48V is ELV.

This setup includes a manual transfer switch and a generator input to connect the car.

Means: the 5kWh LFP battery will cover most of my nighttime power consumption (on average only 4kWh). Daytime is 100% solar and will top up the battery about 362 days a year.

During short power outages the battery will just keep going. During long power outages the car will be hooked up and supply most of the house for several days. Even with current draw limited to 10A (2400W), because the battery and Victron will supply an extra 4kW (or 5kVA) for peak loads.

Anyway, that's the plan. Still need to confirm with my friendly electrician that he's happy to install that, his price, and hope that the battery price does what I expect to happen.

        • -1

Wow, is anyone packaging this, or you just need a sparky who really knows what they are doing with solar.

          • @WhyAmICommenting: No one is touching the existing solar, so in terms of legally required qualifications any licensed sparky should be allowed to install if I understand the rules correctly. Still waiting for confirmation on that.

But then, setting up the software in the Victron, to make sure everything works as intended, requires specialised skills. I have the required background myself.

If you don't, you better get an expert sparky who installs these things all the time. Someone with experience in stand-alone systems (off grid) would be better than someone who is used to installing Powerwalls (which do everything out of the box, but cost a lot more).

        • -2

          are you desi bro?

if you are, then WOW, just WOW at your intellectual level for these kind of things.

      • I have on these and it works great.

        WOW … thank you!!

  • +2

Just sat in one and surprised at how solid it felt, close enough to the price of ice for those looking for a runaround to think about it now.

    • +1

It already price parity with the Yaris and top spec Hybird mg3. The ev price parity is only beginning and it started with this car. Expect GWM and BYD to price cut too.

      • My connections in the CCP tell me BYD is not interested in a price war, not to the extent of MG anyway.

  • +1

Wow another MG massive price cut and for 24 stock too. Wonder why 🤔🤔🤔

    • +3

In approximately 6 to 12 months, we can expect to see an increase in the number of Chinese brands entering the market. This surge in competition will ultimately benefit consumers, who will be able to take advantage of the enhanced choices and better pricing. Patience will be key for those looking to make the most of these new opportunities.

I think this is the start of EVs price war, let's hope more deals for consumers in not too distant future.

      • +3

If you're right re the price war it won't just involve EVs, it'll absolutely impact the car market as a whole.
