I think this is a pretty good deal. It’s quite low density, but not too bad. Something slightly more dense than the 15ppi that I’ve been using, but I’m not sure. It’s on clearance, so I guess once it’s sold out, it’s gone. Hope they get more in though later. There’s also a 75mm thickness version for $1.55, same page.

Yeah, I'd steer clear for that purpose.
Anyone know of a decent source for chonky pre-filter foam?
I just got it from here, probably cheaper elsewhere, Got 2 grades size 100x50x2, cut multiple filters for fish, & pre-filters for vacuum, mower etc, heaps to spare. https://vi.aliexpress.com/item/1005005783600203.html?spm=a2g…
Thanks. I've tried that and found their coarse foam (15ppi?) really flakey. Quick rinse in the sink leaves it covered in flakes. Never seems to end. Have you found differently? If so, it may have been a bad batch and I'll try again.
@whatboutbob: Sorry for the late reply, decided to investigate and do an early clean out.
I've only had the foam for 3 months and the filters in the tank have been in the cycle for 1.5 months.Filters seem fine with no deterioration, though it's only early days.
I purchased grade 15 and 50 in the larger size and have multiple spares cut and they're outside undercover sitting beside the tank exposed to light, they're fine also.
My setup has 4 layers, 3 of which use the foam.
Hope this helps
So disappointing. I thought I finally found a source of cheap foam. The local aquarium prices seem expensive. I’ve had the same experience with AliExpress foam. Flakey or squashed beyond usefulness.
Nah mate. Keep it out of your tank completely. Plenty of anti-microbial treatments use agents (like copper) that will kill your inhabitants, sometimes fast, sometimes slow. Without knowing what treatment is used I'd steer well clear.
Ok! Thanks for the advice. Giving up on it now.
Chatgpt sums it up better than I could:
Antimicrobial foam is designed to inhibit the growth of microorganisms such as bacteria, fungi, and viruses. It achieves this through the inclusion of antimicrobial agents, which can be chemicals, metals, or natural substances that disrupt the cell functions of microbes. Here’s how it works:
Antimicrobial Agents: These can include silver ions, copper, zinc, or synthetic chemicals like triclosan. Silver, for example, releases ions that interfere with the cell walls of bacteria, preventing them from functioning and multiplying.
Contact Killing: When microbes come into contact with the foam, the antimicrobial agents can directly kill them by damaging their cell membranes or disrupting vital processes like protein synthesis.
Inhibition of Growth: Even if the microbes aren’t immediately killed, the agents can slow or prevent their growth, reducing the risk of contamination or infection.
Long-Lasting Effects: Some antimicrobial foams are designed to maintain their properties over time, even after multiple uses, ensuring ongoing protection.
This type of foam is commonly used in medical applications, cleaning products, and even mattresses or pillows to maintain hygiene and prevent the spread of pathogens.
This is not a good choice for your fish's health
Agree but probably not worth a neg on the deal
@Jone did nothing wrong. And is following the voting guidelines
Negative Vote
Purpose:To let others know about issues with the deal, merchant or product
Although there is nothing wrong with the product, the OP is misleading in its use. A negative is needed to indicate that Fast Dry Foam is unsuitable for fish tanks.
For novices, the loss is huge once the nitrifying bacteria in the fish tank is destroyed.
If OP changes his description, I will cancel the negative review.
Another thing I thought I'd mention, you basically never have to replace sponge in a filter unless its damaged or FULLY clogged to the point where a soak+rinse wont clear it. The 3/6/12 month manufacturer recommendations are just to take your money.
Anti-microbial sponge in an aquarium filter sounds counter productive…
