  • That's some intriguing hardware! More than I'm willing to spend on a router (don't have the need) but if you need it that's some nice kit.

@ohgee - What do you mean? Itโ€™s $364, and in the grand scheme of things when it comes to routers itโ€™s peanuts. Itโ€™s cheap and a great deal for a WiFi 7 router. Personally I wouldnโ€™t buy a router from any other country, I would only buy our official model for Australia, but thatโ€™s me.

All I'm saying is that it's overkill for my needs, and that it's a lot of tech for the cost if you need that. I'm surprised by the deal, not in the market and so not qualified to rate this as a bargain but like the product and if you want to drop this coin on it all the best for you.

I have been looking into this 1 for some time : https://www.amazon.com.au/Mercusys-Tri-Band-Directional-Streโ€ฆ

I think this brand is owned by TP link as well well reviewed on amzon. Can someone explain why you would go for OP listing over the link I have provided?.

    • What you have found looks better in terms of having external antennae with a great ground plane compared to being built into the chassis. It is difficult to properly tell you much else from a specification standpoint when both brands have stopped disclosing CPU/RAM details which are critical especially stepping up to Wifi 7 throughput, you would want to have a minimum of a quad core CPU and 1gb RAM.

This guy has done the work.

      • This was a great link, appreciate you sharing it.

Interesting how his #1 requirement is 4x4 MIMO but then he's like "Use this BE550 for the wifi 7 it's great" but doesn't really explain whether it's worth going to 2X2 for it ๐Ÿคท

        Anyone have an opinion?

        • +2

I personally went from 4x4 MIMO WiFi 6 (5 GHz) with external antennas to this BE550 with only 2x2 MIMO WiFi 7 and internal antennas - I would say that it was mostly a downgrade in WiFi performance. Ultimately I've stuck with it because when I am in perfect conditions, my internet speed has slightly improved (from 920ish to 950ish down) and my old router didn't have 2.5Gb ports. Same place in the house that I used to get 850 over WiFi only gets around 500 now (exactly same location for both router and device). 6 GHz seems to be useless unless you're in line of sight without any walls.

I should note that I only have a couple of WiFi 7 devices - but I think many will be in the same boat.

          tl;dr: 4x4 WiFi 6 > 2x2 WiFi 7 for me

Kinda hard to go wrong at that price point if you need wifi 7 imo. Although for most people the MR90x is probably the better value buy with wifi 6.

US version though which is different to the AU model

  • +5

Overseas models don't necessarily use the same frequencies or transmit at the same power as they do here in Australia. It is safest to buy an Australian released model locally.

    • Serious question, are there frequency police?

      • Yes there are but you would need to be extremely unlucky to get a knock on the door, the issue for me would be the omission of channels and/or reduction in transmitting power due to specific country regulations.

As an example channels 12 and 13 in the 2.4Ghz range would be missing on a US model.

  • I wonder how much trouble you'd get into for using the full 6ghz band

    • Sometimes it's baked into the firmware and can't be changed.

      • Still makes it illegal lol

    • +1

I was thinking it would be better to get an overseas model so that you can actually use the full 6GHz band. Aussie models are gimped in that regard

    • 6GHz has a much shorter range and weaker penetration rate than 5GHz. Its signal is undetectable outside brick walls of houses.

      • My point was that US and routers sold in the US support the 6ghz band in its entirety (from 5925mhz to 7125mhz) where as Australia only legally allows for 5925 to 6425

  • If only it was USB 3.2 as USB 3 isn't fast

    • +1

All their (high-end) routers have "USB 3.0" ports but they don't specify if they're 3.2 Gen 1/2 or x1/2
Given they are not C ports and they don't specify the speed I guess we should assume 3.2 Gen 1x1…

  • Hey Guys ..

I own a TP Link x68 3 pack in my house .. 1 is connected to the main NBN box and others around the house..

Sorry for being a tech noob .. but just wondering is it good to buy one of these and freeing up the one which is hardwired to NBN box a feasible idea ?!

    Regards
