My Miele Dishwasher Died after 20 Years - Need to Buy a New One

Miele product has such a quality and my dishwasher has lasted over 20 years.
It was working fine until I tumbled on the door when it was flat opened and I landed on it that eventually damaged the hinge.

I think what made this machine great is the two components used in their assembly.

  • Heating : Throughflow water heater
  • Drying : TurbothemicPlus drying

Now I tried to find similar components used in the modern Miele dishwashers but I can't find the information on their website.

Anyway I am tossing between the basic model ($1.6k) and one step higher ($2.6k) for freestanding models.

https://shop.miele.com.au/en/kitchen/dishwashers/freestandin…
https://shop.miele.com.au/en/kitchen/dishwashers/freestandin…

I don't need AutoDos, Automatic door open when finished, or web connect, etc, some fancy features but if it has better elements mentioned above I would buy even if it is dearer.

Any advice? Is Miele still a good dishwasher to buy compared to the old days?

    Bosch Serie 6.

No idea if it has the features you mention, but is an excellent dishwasher.

    • Will consider this as a second option.

      • +2

I agree: it's an excellent dishwasher. We'd replace ours with the same if and when.

      • +20

        Miele G 5000 $1,449 10-year warranty, tested to 20 years average use
Bosch Series 6 $1,203 2-year warranty, estimated service life 10–12 years

The only reasons to get the Bosch are (1) you can't cash flow the extra $246; (2) you're fine with the extortionate cost of applicance service tech visits; (3) you're a Miele hater; (4) you genuinely enjoy shopping for replacement whitegoods; (5) you're a generous slum lord; (6) you're selling soon, hope that Bosch lifts your sale price and plan to include the DW as a fixture; (7) you already have other Bosch stuff and prefer your kitchen branding to match.

We found modern Miele doesn't have anywhere near the quality or life expectancy of the older models as evidenced by both the new dishwasher and oven my mother had installed (as it had to be miele) both having multiple issues over the past 3 years, we moved over to Bosch after witnessing that.

          • +1

@gromit: I'm surprised you didn't receive goodwill from Miele on their 2-year warranty

            • +3

@sumyungguy: thus far all she has received is frustrating delays getting them repaired. The last incident was only a month or so ago with the dishwasher where they replaced the board. hopefully it is the last of the troubles but it does not inspire confidence.

      • +2

I replaced a Miele with a Series 6. I just couldn't justify double the price for another Miele. The Bosch has been rock solid for 5+ years.

The lower model Miele use a cutlery basket instead of a rack. As a cutlery rack convert I can't go back, I won't…

        • +2

Interesting .. I much prefer the basket than the rack purely from an efficiency perspective. I can insert cutlery quickly in to the basket without much thought, but must individually place items in the rack.

          • +6

@mshanann: I didn't see the point of it at first either. But if you train yourself to place them on the rack in groups, in an orderly fashion, it is very satisfying to just scoop them out in one move and pop into the cutlery drawer. Best thing ever :)

            • +1

@Rumo: Yes, the scoop! Very efficient unloading and you can easily have neat piles of cutlery in the drawer.

Also it's easier to inspect the finished groups of cutlery on the rack for bits of food left on.

            • @Rumo: Exactly!

Also, while it takes little effort to throw cutlery into a basket - you still need effort to stop spoons spooning!

          • @mshanann: I'm not going to tell you one is better than the other as it's a personal thing. For me, there's no going back for the reason Rumo says

          • @mshanann: I don't like baskets because they take up room where you could put more stuff.

    • Blanco Dish washer.. going strong 21 years now :) also washes dishes really well. Never repaired never serviced.

  • You've done well; I only got 15 years from my last two Miele DW. A Miele tech told me they've made some changes in the G series to improve longevity. If you need freestanding there are always plenty at the outlet. The higher end models feature the fabulous 3D MultiFlex tray. Consider G 5210 SC CLST $1,999 with 10-year warranty.

    • +1

Tempted to go to the outlet but Miele now runs 10 year labour and parts warranty for September only.
Oh, my old model was also G series (G692 SC plus)

      • I've clearly used the wrong descriptor. G is perhaps the code for dishwashers, current series are 5000 and 7000 which are dfferent internally from my old one.

    • Do you have this model?

      • +1

I have a G7319 SCi XXL outlet stock $2,399 in Dec-2021 (retail $3,299). Being integrated it's appealing to replace like-for-like.

  • +3

    Can't you replace/repair the hinge?

    • I think it’s time to get a new one but honestly it’s insane that the machine lasted this long with daily use and no issue. Something’s right with Miele quality.

      • +1

My washer faulted for the first time after 32 years

        • +1

          Mr Moneybags over here…

      • +8

I doubt a new one would last as long, most of these brands sold out years ago and are now cheaply made.

        • +1

But also are cheaper to buy

Although after seeing the ops user name, I thought I was going to read a post, wanting advice on accc warranty. 🤣🤣

      • +2

New machine will be more water and energy efficient anyway.

      • +1

My Miele rack is rusting. 5.5 years old but the rust started about 2 years ago out of warranty

        • Did you request a goodwill replacement, or a discounted one? Otherwise I gather you can do a DIY repair with this product

          • +1

@sumyungguy: I did not ask Miele for a goodwill repair as I read that the company does not give free help to customers outside the standard (2 year) warranty. Did not want a discounted replacement model as that would still cost $1k.

DIY repair - thanks for the link! I just wish they made a smaller bottle for cheaper, as only a few small spots on my cutlery rack are rusting

            • +1

@Fobsessive: Sorry, I meant a discounted replacement rack. I find Miele to be great with product support; if you don't ask you don't get.

  • +5

I hope you are ok after your fall?

    • +4

One of the reasons we now have cutlery drawers…

      • I'd never thought of that… Good safety feature

  • +1

I just got a Bosch Series 8 from Appliance online for $1650. Free delivery, take away old one

  • So good to hear about good dishwasher experiences. Were there any dead zones in it?
Did you get a good clean really every time?
Could you get away with cheaper tabs or powder?
    What was your routine?
Any servicing needed or parts replacement during that time?
Do you remember how much you originally paid 20 years ago?

    • +1

I am not convinced if the modern day Miele product would have the same quality as the old days.
Mine had no issue for 20 years, running every day with any brand tablet it came out so clean and dried.
It was made in Germany but I don't know if the current models are made in Germany either, I just cannot find the info.

      • The base models are not made in Germany. They’re made in Poland I think.

        • +1

          Slovenia

          • @theStinge: My new G5000 made in Czech Republic

My old G641 was I believe made in Germany and was rock solid for 15+ years until it started tripping the house circuit (earth leakage).

      • My two Miele fridges failed completely in their 7th and 8th year after 3 costly sensor part replacements. I suspect the replaced sensors were not new. Since then I have moved to other brand (not Bosch).

  • +1

We bought the g5210 for self opening, fast 50 min wash, cutlery drawer, 10 year warranty.

    https://www.winnings.com.au/p/miele-60cm-g5000-freestanding-…

This is after owning an LG quadwash which also had a "10 year warranty", but found that did not cover the drainage pump which ended up leaking after replacement and the entire machine is made to fail with small drainage galleries that gum up and is designed to be difficult to repair.

The Miele is much quieter and so much faster.
There is a Bosch series 6 at work, one thing I don't like is the lower basket/tray, when full/heavy, it drops into the gap between the door and body and gets stuck and needs to be lifted when pulling it out. It seems like a huge oversight for an expensive washer..

    • Now I am thinking of buying this model.
Do you know if yours is made in Germany?

      • +2

Yes made in Germany. Expensive but I think it's worth it, over 10 years compared to under 3 for cheaper brands

        • Not sure if they changed but I went to look at this on the weekend. This model now made in Czech Republic!

      • I have the integrated version it's a great unit the pop open to dry function is pretty good.
I heard from a miele tech the models above with the autodos function his been called out to a lotta jobs to fix an issue with those; don't know his perogative though considering I thought they'd want more call outs.

      • Be prepared for an underwhelming delivery experience from Miele. I ordered the G5210 in early July, now won't be delivered until mid October. They didn't offer any explanation or apology for the delay until I called them to complain.

        • That’s pain. Better check the outlet stock. Quick delivery within a week.

    • I purchased the G5000 (made in Czech Republic) - it is pretty average out of the boxx compared to my old G641. However once I turn off all the energy saving features, it cleans and dries pretty similar.

  • Ah! I hope my 20 something year old miele washing machine isn't next!

  • +1

I've had the "entry level" Miele dishwasher for seven years now and it's been fine so far. Just last week the ancient installed-when-Moses-was-a-lad dishwasher in my rental finally bit the dust, and I've arranged for it to be replaced with a Miele G5000 SC with a ten year warranty. I figure the only people who give a ten year warranty are those who are pretty certain it's not going to crap out in the next few years.

    • Like Mitsubishi?

  • +1

I got an IKEA diskad for $287.
It's a rebranded Bosch series 6, made in Germany. Definitely recommend!
Their profsig is similar but a bit more expensive with more features.

    • How is it cleaning? Can you use any tabs/powder and do you notice a difference?
      Anything disappointing? Any dead zones?

      • +1

It's the first dishwasher I've owned and extremely happy.
I was worried about power consumption though it uses 15c per wash (0.5kWh) which we run during day to use or solar.

Haven't noticed any dead zones. All our things come out looking brand new. We never knew our glasses we've owned for years could be so clean!

I've only used finish tablets which we got on sale so 100 pack will last us a couple of years. I'll try get some cheaper stuff to try as I feel it's a waste using a whole tablet on a half load.

    • The Ozbargain fav!

    • i think profsig is the lower model. And Diskad is a cross between series 6 and 8.

      • I think profsig is higher.
It has more options and automatically opens the door when finishing a cycle unlike the diskad

    • Same here. It's great. It replaced an old Omega dishwasher that was at our house when we bought it 5 years ago and it refused to die.
It runs so quiet and drying performance is awesome.
I use it with Alid tablets and no complaints whatsoever.

  • We moved into a house with an entry level Miele and it wasn’t great. Didn’t wash well and even though it was only 3 years old, the SS was already rusting. We had a Bosch Serie 6 at our previous place (which was awesome!). Ended up selling the Miele on Gumtree and getting a higher end Miele G7609 XXL (https://shop.miele.com.au/en/kitchen/dishwashers/integrated-…) which is excellent! We don’t use the Auto Dos (apart from the initial packs they give you free), but I love the auto opening - all our plasticware comes out dry! I would highly recommend the higher end Miele dishwashers, but they’re not cheap. Dont get the base model though - Bosch Serie 6 would be far superior.

  • I love Miele, but not hubby initially.
But now he's a convert after a couple of repairs.
Go to their Showroom or Outlet, talk to the Staff. I did and got one we wanted, and was gifted lots of stuff LOL.

  • +2

Bosch Series 6 all the way made in Germany……….best dishwasher I have ever had…

  • -1
    • +1

Wow…So those features in my old dishwasher is now used in high end and Pro range (commercial)?
No wonder it finishes with very clean and dried cycle and never had any issue for 20 years. I feel sorry for the loss.

  • Ours is only about 10 years old, not sure if it has those particular components.
If by auto door opening you mean the door just cracks open a couple of inches when done - ours has this.
Nice to have, but I wouldn’t pay another thousand for it.
Ours has worked flawlessly from day 1.
If buying again I would get just the base model. And I wouldn’t bother with another brand.

  • +7

Shame on you. Your dishwasher only just died and your already looking for a new one.

    • +5

the dishes are not even cold yet

  • Go the silver one. Looks better than plain white.

  • +1

The on button for the Miele dishwasher I got has to pressed around 5 times for it to turn on. This was the $2k one so I would test in store before buying. Maybe they've since fixed it.

    • Weird, mines similar, usually press once, wait a couple secs and then press it again. I tried it on some floor stock and it was the same too.

Anyway, the auto open is great and not a gimmick, I can run it during the day while I’m at work and everything will be dry, even plastic, as it get some air circulation after the cycle has finished.

      • Weird same here with the on button.

        • Ours does the same. We had the Miele repair guy out for our washing machine and he had a look at the dishwasher because I mentioned this and said that’s normal because it goes to sleep and it takes a couple of seconds for it to power up again (this is one of their G 7000 series dishwashers).

  • +1

    Just fix it

  • My vote is for the G5000.

I have the 20+ year old model and it has hardly changed in design or front panel interface. It is a rock of a dishwasher - it just works and works. Everything else you buy today dies after 5 years (and you are sometimes lucky to get that).

I can't really afford Miele appliances - but I would buy another Miele dishwasher without hesitation if my current one failed.

  • +2

We recently got a German-made AEG. I chose this machine as it had a cashback offer at the time and a 10 year factory warranty. So far, it's been a great machine and does exactly what it says on the tin. Very quiet too.

    Recommended.

    • +1

Yes I'm the same as you and got the XXL.

It takes a beating from us. Good on-site support too.

  • +2

I think for bosch, there are certain model numbers which are made in china, and others which are made in germany, which could help you decide on your next purchase.

  • +1

Went looking at dishwashers today after reading this post. Was surprised that even the $2000 Miele models weren’t made in Germany.

    • Apparently they don’t even sell the cheap models in Europe, they make them for other countries

  • +1

Def get the auto open option. So good. I have 2 dws, one without and it's annoying. The auto open allows them to dry if you forget to open it.

    • Never had an auto-open dishwasher and never had any issue with wet dishes if the door has been left closed. ?

If you open the door soon after the washing cycle has completed, there is a lot of steam and that causes the dishes to be a little damp. But if I leave the door closed, that all evaporates after an hour or two.

    • I’m struggling to justify this. It’s $350 just for this feature.

Do you use the 1 hour power wash feature? Any good ?

  • F&P dish drawer. True half loads much more ergonomic as you don’t need to bend over for the top drawer.

    • +1

We have 4 of these at work and they are always breaking down. They aren't doing heavy workloads either, about 5 loads a week each.

The greater the complexity of the device, the more parts to fail.

  • Bought a Miele G6305 XXL in 2016. Used about 10 times a week. After 8 years we had been through 2 pumps. Part alone costs more than $600 from Miele. Decided to scrap earlier this year after another water leak was causing the RCD to trip. Both bottom and middle racks had rusted out and Miele quoted $950 to replace them. Replaced with a Bosch Series 8. It has smarter racking and better performance. Parts are cheaper with Bosch - new racks are almost half the price of Miele. Only thing Miele did better was drying although both have auto door function.

    • Miele currently have 10 year warranty for Sept. That would have solved all your problems for free in the last 8 years.

  • I picked up a 2nd hand Miele off gumtree (back in the day before marketplace even existed). Threw it into one of my rental properties and lasted nearly 9 years of abuse before it coded out. Replaced it with the cheapest Good Guys brand one and it's been 3+yrs with almost no issues so far.

  • +2

You don't need to buy a Miele to get reliability. You are paying a serious price premium for the brand. We've had an AEG for over 20 years and it's still going strong. Lesser known, but high quality and not as expensive. Only servicing requirement over 20 years has been to remove some (small) wooden skewers my son left on a plate (that got stuck).

As others have suggested, I'd also consider a Bosch. We have Bosch laundry appliances. Very reliable and functional.

  • Honestly,

Had an Asko dishwasher, lasted all of 3 years. Had a Miele washing machine, lasted all of 4 years and that was it for me for the expensive brands. It used to be you pay for what you get but not anymore.

Bought a $375 el cheapo rental spec Euromaid DR14S, lasted 8 years and washed and dried dishes perfectly everytime, drainage pump died which wasn't that expensive of a fix but felt it was time for an upgrade. it's still on sale today.

Now onto a $600 Westinghouse, but honestly it doesn't feel anywhere near as well put together as the Euromaid and the drying is a bit hit and miss. Would happily buy another Euromaid.

  • +1

Miele still make great dishwashers, especially with the 10 year warranty which is currently available.

  • I got a Miele G7519 SCi XXL 3 years ago as it was the quietest they seem to make at the time, I have other Miele products that I've been very happy with and had another higher end MIele dishwasher in a rental I was in for a while and again was happy with it compared to others used (F&P, ASKO, EURO).
I wasn't after the autoDOS but it came with a bunch included and seems to be OK.
