Received this email last night in the flurry of every other iPhone 16 emails. I can't remember JB or HN advertising $800 on this plan?

Could be useful for someone.

For those looking to just cancel and take advantage of the Optus deal, you’ve to stay activated for 120 days and pay an ETC of $690 (($69 x4) + $690 = $966

JB has a similar offer but it’s on their $99 plan with $1200 off any iPhone, but the voucher repayment fee is only $800. JB is a much better deal because of the existing loophole

    • I got the Pixel deal from HN last month which had the similar stipulation of having to repay the voucher if cancelled within 4 months but my cancellation fee on the Optus app is only 50% of the remaining contract as it was before and same has been confirmed by Optus live chat.

      • So the calcs should be (($69x4) + $345)?

    • What’s the loophole with jb? Can it be partly waived or something?

The loophole is that you only pay the voucher repayment fee of $800 (pro rata and probs always $766.59), and not the $1200

        • So at least $400 off an iPhone 16 for very little effort.

    • Sorry to keep jacking the comments away from your deal,

But am I understanding this right?

JB. iPhone 16 bog standard is 1600. If I sign up to Telstra, get 1200 off, it's now 400 left out of pocket. Cancel Telstra immediately, have 800 to pay back, I'd be paying 800 plus that owing 400 or would it just be paying the 800 voucher repayment fee as everything else is terminated?

Surely it would be 1200 total, not 800, but at 800 (profanity) it, I'd buy one for the missus for xmas. 1200 and she'd rip my balls off though.

      • When you sign up to the plan, you'll have to pay $400 to cover the rest and get the phone. You're not going to get that back.
When you cancel Telstra they'll bill you $800 or a bit less sometimes, so you'll have paid $1200 or less
You could cover the $400 with discounted gift cards to make it slightly cheaper

Oh you also have to pay the original $99 upfront and may or may not get it back.
I got it back when I did a similar deal for an iPad.

        • That's what I thought. Not bad for the price the thing usually is, but more than I'd be willing to part with.

Tempted to take them up on the 1200 deal for an iPhone 15. I know there was a slightly better one a couple months back, but 1250, minus 1200, plus 800, 850 odd for the 15, versus 12/13 hundred for the 16. I don't know, don't know that the 16 is another four or five hundred better, you know?

She mostly just wanted a newer one and that sweet 15 camera. Had been holding onto the 2020 SE with the home button for dear life, but even with a new batt it's showing it's age.

Edit: Seems the 16 is 1400, not 1600, stupid me. That makes it a bit more of a tough choice.

    • So sign up which is $0, cancel the plan then just pay $966 for a new iPhone 16?

  • I was talking with an employee yesterday , he strongly advised me not to do this due to bad credit rating . If your not worried about future purchases , something to be mindful of.

Which credit rating, with the rating agencies or the store? This won’t impact your credit rating with an agency like Experian or Equifax. They aren’t the morals police.

    • Does lots of mobile phone credit contracts really affect your credit rating that much? Are they (the banks considering lending to you) thinking you're going to switch away from a loan just as you do with mobile phone contracts and aren't interested in lending on that basis?

      • any plan runs a credit check which does impact your credit rating, but not a huge amount (it's not a "black mark" on your record, just a standard credit check like any credit card application)

paying out the plan to save a few hundred dollars won't be recorded on your credit score.

    • That makes no sense. It hasnt affected my excellent rating

    Nah. Optus.

    And Harvey Norman.

Optus on its own is more than enough 😂

  • This basically means you buy an iPhone 16 for ~35/month for 24 months + cost of the iPhone 16. Am I correct
