Received this email last night in the flurry of every other iPhone 16 emails. I can't remember JB or HN advertising $800 on this plan?

Could be useful for someone.

For those looking to just cancel and take advantage of the Optus deal, you’ve to stay activated for 120 days and pay an ETC of $690 (($69 x4) + $690 = $966

JB has a similar offer but it’s on their $99 plan with $1200 off any iPhone, but the voucher repayment fee is only $800. JB is a much better deal because of the existing loophole

    • I got the Pixel deal from HN last month which had the similar stipulation of having to repay the voucher if cancelled within 4 months but my cancellation fee on the Optus app is only 50% of the remaining contract as it was before and same has been confirmed by Optus live chat.

      • So the calcs should be (($69x4) + $345)?

    • What’s the loophole with jb? Can it be partly waived or something?

      • +1

The loophole is that you only pay the voucher repayment fee of $800 (pro rata and probs always $766.59), and not the $1200

        • +2

So at least $400 off an iPhone 16 for very little effort.

    • Sorry to keep jacking the comments away from your deal,

But am I understanding this right?

JB. iPhone 16 bog standard is 1600. If I sign up to Telstra, get 1200 off, it's now 400 left out of pocket. Cancel Telstra immediately, have 800 to pay back, I'd be paying 800 plus that owing 400 or would it just be paying the 800 voucher repayment fee as everything else is terminated?

Surely it would be 1200 total, not 800, but at 800 (profanity) it, I'd buy one for the missus for xmas. 1200 and she'd rip my balls off though.

      • +1

When you sign up to the plan, you'll have to pay $400 to cover the rest and get the phone. You're not going to get that back.
When you cancel Telstra they'll bill you $800 or a bit less sometimes, so you'll have paid $1200 or less
You could cover the $400 with discounted gift cards to make it slightly cheaper

Oh you also have to pay the original $99 upfront and may or may not get it back.
I got it back when I did a similar deal for an iPad.

        • That's what I thought. Not bad for the price the thing usually is, but more than I'd be willing to part with.

Tempted to take them up on the 1200 deal for an iPhone 15. I know there was a slightly better one a couple months back, but 1250, minus 1200, plus 800, 850 odd for the 15, versus 12/13 hundred for the 16. I don't know, don't know that the 16 is another four or five hundred better, you know?

She mostly just wanted a newer one and that sweet 15 camera. Had been holding onto the 2020 SE with the home button for dear life, but even with a new batt it's showing it's age.

Edit: Seems the 16 is 1400, not 1600, stupid me. That makes it a bit more of a tough choice.

FYI , If you see on their website its only 500$ Gift card on that plan
          check here.
          https://www.harveynorman.com.au/brands/optus-mobile-data-pla…

        • @theguyrules How did you go about getting the $99 back? Just signed up and cancelled, but no indication of whether that’ll get reimbursed.

          • @Salesniper: Asked live chat. Took a few agents but one said it would happen, and it did

            • @theguyrules: @theguyrules Can you recall how you asked? Have tried and unfortunately they have said they do not have access to phone plans and to speak to the store manager where the plan was purchased.

        • Thx @theguyrules,

Just wanted to understand if this works with a trade-in device? Say i hv 200$ for my old iphone, so i pay only 200$ instead of 400$ upfront? And i dont need to give it back when i cancel Telstra?

Also, when exactly can i cancel the deal, immediately after Telstra plan activates? And i cancel with whom? JB or Teslstra?

Never done this before but tempted to do this

      • The Good Guys Mobile & Broadband, Telstra & Boost). The JB Hi-Fi Gift Card (referred to as the “JB Hi-Fi Voucher” in the Telstra Terms and Conditions) will be available to you instore after connection approval by Telstra. The $1200 JB Hi-Fi Gift Card will replace the value of the Voucher stated in the Critical Information Summary.

It seems they have fixed the loop hole

        • Nope, as mentioned many times on many deals, “JB Hi-Fi Voucher” and “Voucher Repayment Fee” aren’t the same thing

Either way, I’ve signed up many times and they don’t even change the Voucher amount on the CIS even though they always put the T&C that you quoted above

    • So sign up which is $0, cancel the plan then just pay $966 for a new iPhone 16?

      • I think could be $601 for the ETC plus whatever your upfront cost is for the iPhone 16 since it’s only $800 gift card

    • Hi BargainsGrabber, with the JB deal, do you cancel directly with Telstra or via JB?

      • +1

Both way works but I’d hop onto JB Mobile app to cancel

    • is the JB deal already available?
Not sure how to access it as I dont see any Telstra plan option when viewing the iPhone 16 pro on their website

      • Yes, it’s an in store offer at JB, ends on 18 Sept

    • +1

Can I trade in my device and also sign up to JB Hifi Mobile plan to reduce the cost?

    • Whers the JB deal?

      • No one has posted it on OzBargain but I received it in the JB newsletter when the pre ordering for iPhone 16 was out

        • Would be nice if you can post it for us :D

          • +1

@Homr: Not a great deal imo, but if you want to post it instead, here’s a photo of the promo

            • @BargainsGrabber: Thank you, it looks like this optus $69 deal is better if you plan to go finish the 24 month contract

              • @Homr: No worries, I have not done the calcs myself but I put the options out there for those who wanted to cancel it instead :)

            • @BargainsGrabber: Can I do the maths so basically JB deal will be
              iPhone 16 Pro Max 256G
              total: 2199 - 1200 + 99(pay in store for first month plan) + 766.59 = 1864.59
So basically 15.2% off and can get more discount from paying upfront fee, in this case, 999 by gift card?

    • Can confirm JB deal. Bought 16 pro 256 approx $2000. Signed up for 2 $99 deals, was given 2 $1200 giftcards. Used $1997 towards phone, one card has $403 remaining. Cancelled the $99 phone numbers. Results in $766 voucher fee payment for each. So total cost is:

      2 x $99 (Upfront plan cost) +
      2 x $766 (Voucher fee) = $1730

For $1997 phone and $403 voucher

So $1730 for $2400 value, pretty good deal.

      • +1

Note: before doing this recheck the terms, on this page ensure that the maximum voucher fee is still $800 https://www.telstra.com.au/help/critical-information-summari…

        • Note 2: This offer ends tomorrow (18/09).

      • Thx for update. Did u need to go to store or can do online? M also trading my phone so just not sure when i can cancel account

      • Thanks for your post.

Came back from JB just now.

Replicated what you did, but lucky me, they only charged me 1*766 to cancel both services

      • Did you need to have 2 people to sign up for 2 numbers?
Did you sign up for 2 random new numbers and then cancel them the same day?

I was talking with an employee yesterday , he strongly advised me not to do this due to bad credit rating . If your not worried about future purchases , something to be mindful of.

    • +2

Which credit rating, with the rating agencies or the store? This won’t impact your credit rating with an agency like Experian or Equifax. They aren’t the morals police.

    • Does lots of mobile phone credit contracts really affect your credit rating that much? Are they (the banks considering lending to you) thinking you're going to switch away from a loan just as you do with mobile phone contracts and aren't interested in lending on that basis?

      • any plan runs a credit check which does impact your credit rating, but not a huge amount (it's not a "black mark" on your record, just a standard credit check like any credit card application)

paying out the plan to save a few hundred dollars won't be recorded on your credit score.

    • +1

That makes no sense. It hasnt affected my excellent rating

    • I’ve had a 24m contract through Optus before and it did not affect my credit rating. I think they’re full of shit.

    • yeh i wouldn't trust an employee

  • +1

    Nah. Optus.

    And Harvey Norman.

    • +5

Optus on its own is more than enough 😂

      • +1

Totally. I was caught up in their massive failure (“hack”) and won’t forget too soon.

  • This basically means you buy an iPhone 16 for ~35/month for 24 months + cost of the iPhone 16. Am I correct

    • yes

  • Is there a similar deal going on for iPad Air m2 ?

    • $500 gift card on same plan

      • Is there also a deal going on for. 15?

        • same $500 GC, 16 offer is better and the RRP is cheaper than the 15 when it came out.

  • +7

    Gerry is a w⚓️

I’m really confused or not getting this bargain.
Telstra $65/basic plan plus 36 month iPhone 16 Pro 512GB min device cost $65.25.
If I immediately cancel I still have to pay for the device and first month’s monthly charges $65.

Same with Vodafone JBhifi. I’m not sure how we are saving. Can someone break this down for my case as I’m stupid.

    • Count me in as well. I have no clue how this works.
I don't need a plan and only looking for save some bucks on iPhone 16 pro 256GB

    • telcos dont have any loopholes or discounts like us and JB
telco shop plans are device + sim, us and JB offer SIM ONLY plans which offer gift cards or discounts in return to use to by outright devices.

      • I still don't get it how it works and what's the discount?

        • sign up to $69 plan for 2 years, inclusions are 100gb data/month and unlimited aus calls, we give a $800 discount to buy an iphone 16 outright.

          • @HardlyNormal: $69/m for 2 years plus iPhone 16 Pro $2346 for which I’ll get $800 from HN so phone would be $2346-$800, am I right? How much do I pay per month for the phone if I want to pay per month?

If I take the phone cancel the HN optus plan immediately what’s the break up cost?

            • @justanick: yes for 2346-800, remaining is outright, so pay with anything useable at an eftpos terminal.

if you cancel IMMEDIATELY you need to pay 828+500 penalty for cancelling within first 120 days.

      • Could you please help us with an example like mine? I want to buy iPhone 16 Pro outright and save money.

        • $69 plan is good if ur paying more than $35/m with current provider.

      • Hi @HardlyNormal,
        Even though this says $500 - https://www.harveynorman.com.au/brands/optus-mobile-data-pla…

There is in fact a current in-store credit for $800, ending today? Or am I missing something there?

        Thanks heaps in advance,
        AZ

  • I'm currently with Moose Mobile on the Optus network. Any requirement to on non-Optus network to get this deal?

    • +1

Went to HN today- can't be on optus network.

      • +1

        Thanks mate.

        • NOT TRUE, only provider you cant be with is optus postpaid. moose is fine.

          • @HardlyNormal: Good to know- thanks mate.
But i spoke to 2 people at one of your QLD stores yesterday and both said the same thing. Both also had no knowledge originally of the deal. Might be worth updating the wider team to save further in store confusion

            • @lostmemac: yeah some franchisees are really lazy and its frustrating as this should be common knowledge.
              100% will work with moose.

          • @HardlyNormal: Thanks for the confirmation.

      • Were you able to save any $$ from the HN deal? If you are buying outright then why not choose Apple?

  • +1

@JumpingUnicorns, cheers again for the post, walked in and did the JB deal just before for the missus for Xmas. Let's see how long I can make it before giving her the thing early.

    • Just don't tell her you've had it for 3 months 😂

      • lol

      • +2

I got (profanity) bc there's too many things. Her bday was July and I got us that holiday flight / hotel deal to Queensland. Anniversary is October so we're going to the Melbourne show with the lad, cheap tickets from here too. Now the (profanity) iPhone for xmas.

"Thanks" OzBargain. My wallet is super thankful for all this shit you made me spend money on.
