The Good Guys Vs JB Hi-Fi for White Goods

In the market for big items.( Fridge/dishwasher/range hood/dryer).

Plan is to buy 10% off gift cards from classifieds ( around $4000 worth) section here and use them in store for savings.

As this process involves specific store gift cards, which store I should stick to? Especially considering deals and warranty.

Thank you.

    Same company mate, doesn't matter

You'll see more variance just based on which specific store locations rather than which out of TGG and JB

    • +2

Fun fact, JB will price match The Good Guys, you just gotta ask.

    • +2

Yeap, same company. Might be a fluke, but I've had more lucky getting a good deal from JB than the good guys.

A few years ago I was in a HN as it was in a combined retail area to buy something from elsewhere. I went into HN just to look at the TV I wanted. It was discounted at every retailer, which I assumed meant a new model was inbound, but i was happy to take what was in front of me.,The TV was still stickered at RRP, well above the 'going rate' and insane now that most places had discounted further. I can't remember exactly, but it was an LG OLD 55". Pretty sure RRP was 3600, yet going rate was around 2000. HN still had the 3600 sticker price.

Smug HN sales person asked if they could help. I know the sales folks on the floor dont set prices and are just doing their job, but I couldn't help but say something along the lines of "I want this TV, but your pricing is no where near the mark". Sales guy followed with "whats the mark"? I told him what ever it was, I think 1800, which was literally 1/2 the sticker price. He said he'd be right back. Within 1 minute he was back, and agreed to sell it at the price I said. I couldn't believe it. I wasnt planning to actually buy on that day, and I really didn't want to buy from HN. Said I'd think about it, and got the price written on his business card.

Went home for about 5 mins and decided at half price, I had to buy. But of course not from HN. went to my nearest good guys. Once I got an employee (took way longer than it should, but I was commited to buying, so I waited), no stuffing around, told him I want X model at Y price to match HN. No demo, no sales pitch, just go out the back and get it. He went 'out the back' to check on pricing. Their sticker pricing on the TV was way lower than HN/RRP, but still a few hundred about the HN offer. He came back after a large delay and said, "we can't do it" or similar and walked off.

I then sold my soul and went back to HN and bought the tv i wanted at 1/2 price. Made me realise that just because a retailer isn't discounting like the rest, they can propbably still match the price, and likely have stock. I still have the tv to this day and love it…. but I cant help wondering if anyone else bought the same TV from HN at or near sticker price around the time……

I hate supporting HN, and businesses that list old products at orginal RRP just to screw over uninformed 'suckers' and make a massive profit… but whats a guy to do?

Get the best price possible for the same model at any retailer you can, warranty should be a non issue in your decison when picking a retailer in most cases. Probably a good idea to look at aust consumer law, its a bit vague, but allows/recognises that a 12 month warranty is not sufficent in some cases https://www.accc.gov.au/consumers/buying-products-and-servic…

[quite a few years back I got an awesome deal on a sound bar and sub from jb hifi. Was at work in the CBD and was looking on the website, and they had a sony offering for a large discount. quicly walked to nearest store to buy. scanned at normal priced, I showed their own website price, which they confirmed on their pdas or what ever that used then, so they just marked it down and sold it. Employee said he might buy one at that price too. Went back to work and got distracted. A few hours later I chekced, their website had the normal price back up! - if you happen to see/get a large discount, like above, buy, or get in wrtting and buy from perfered retailer. If discount is advertised, and be a mistake or limited stock, get to a store asap. click and collent and delivery orders can be cancelled easily! ]

    FYI JB owns GG.

which store I should stick to?

One that offers the best discount, since you wanted to buy a Fridge/dishwasher/range hood/dryer, I would walk to the store and ask what is the best they can do for all these items at once. Then compare between store and buy. You can use AO as a haggling price point.

You will probably be better off playing Good Guys against Bing Lee.

I've always ended up buying from Bing Lee because they have been more up front with their best price, although rare to see discounted gift cards for them.

    • Agree, I just recently bought all my kitchen appliances from Bing Lee. On all items they were able to either price match or beat the best price from other stores including online stores. Plus they are 5mins away from me, offered to hold the items till I need them and free delivery.

    • +1

I had an exactly opposite experience, on 4 occasions TGG was more upfront as compared to BL. Most recent encounter was when I bought eufy floodcam E340. BL had it for $449 and JB for $358. Jb was upfront with their 30 off 300+ with perks. BL didn't budge even after their rep online agreed for $329. Then I went to TGG and mentioned these prices and asked for their best, got it for $270.

      • +2

Funnily enough I pitted JB, TGG and HN against each other for a TV, washing machine, dishwasher, dryer and 2x fridges. HN surprisingly won.

Worth giving them a shot too.

Just dont forget to say no to the extended warranty :/

10% off gift cards from classifieds ( around $4000 worth)

    Stay safe mate

    • Yeah, I understand what you are saying. I will do it in parts, not all at once.

      • +5

I will do it in parts, not all at once.

Ok, so you diversify your risk, but it still takes just one bad transaction to completely offset any savings you stand to gain, or worse.
Why not play it safe and look into procuring discounted gift cards via some rewards platform instead?

        • +1

Most of these giftcards are at 50/100$ denomination. I need to have 15-20 cards for just one transaction . Not sure how this will work.

          • +2

@CrypticM: I have used gift cards to buy from The Good Guys online before, and I believe the maximum was 5 gift cards used in one transaction online, in store I think you were able to use more. I would check on live chat with both websites for gift card usage before spending your money on the gift cards :)

          • +1

@CrypticM: Wasn’t there a photo floating around on this site of a receipt from JB HiFi showing like 50 gift cards used for one transaction.

    • Theres upcoming 10% off GC deals in the coming days but op is gambling the same rate off randoms yikes

I always prefer TGG because of their extra warranty options. Unsure on what JB offers.

    • +4

Do we really need extra warranty? Our consumer laws are strongest.

      • +2

I've got it on two dryers, and I had issues with both. The first time, I got a replacement, and the second time, it was a repair. Both are outside the 2-year warranty. The first one was 4.5 years old and I had 5 years total warranty.

        • +1

I do this too, and have found TGG to be pretty easy to deal with regarding warranties and replacements.

      • +4

Depends what price you can get it for, and how much you value your time.

Total roll of the dice sometimes and depends how much you are prepared to hassle the branch or manufacturer.

We sometimes get reports here of easy process as soon as you throw the keyword ACL into the conversation.

Then you also get reports of basically having to take them to an ombudsman/claims court to get a solution (assuming it’s really warranty / product related and not user error or similar)

I’ve personally had a shit time dealing with Sony, Samsung and Nikon.

Oh and bosch too. F Bosch.

        • Bosch too? Was it dishwasher?

          • @CrypticM: Dryer serie 8. Shittest design servicing wise. I pulled it all apart and cleaned it all out, will just wait till it totally dies in the arse then go any brand except that.

      • +1

You don't need an extra warranty for white goods or electrical goods as they are pretty reliable but 99% of my claims are coming through the standard warranty period. For me, Sony/BOSE/Brother and Dell were pretty good.

The only time I use ALC is on Redsbaby (an Australian Company), a few months after the warranty and initially, they did ask, what is ACL lol.

Things I would get an extended warranty on things that you need tradies to install, ie cooktop or oven.

Appliances Online is my go to (or E&S)

They deliver and take away your old stuff

    • Appliances Online

      agree

      • +1

Ditto. They agreed to much better prices than anyone else recently when we needed a new washing machine and a few weeks later, when we needed a new dishwasher. Next day delivery and free removal of old machines. - part of Winnings group.

      • agree- service is so good even other appliances places talk about

  • +6

Plan is to buy 10% off gift cards from classifieds

    Bookmarked for future reference lol

    • -2

      Will be careful.

      • +4

How careful can you be though? About the only way to truly be careful is to meet the seller at the JB/GGs counter and use the gift cards in the presence of the seller.

        • +3

This is pretty much the only way the way it’s going these days. I’d be uncomfortable even gambling on a $500 voucher let alone 4k

        • +1

Hey shh, this is building up to another great post ;)

      • or just buy gift cards from aldi in 11 ish days.

  • +9

You're better off forgetting about the gift card idea and going in to the shop and making a deal with the store people. I reckon you'll get looked after a bit better.

  • Do you have access to commercial pricing? Or Costco?

  • I prefer Harvey Norman, they have the best brands and hold stock.

    • service is meh when you have issues

  • They only sell mid-priced average whitegoods. Suggest you start at Winnings who stock all the quality brands and work down from there depending on how much you want to allocate. Outlet options are Home Clearance and Miele.

    • Looks like they are spending $4k on 4 appliances, I don't think Miele is high on the list.

  • +1

Neither? I find their range limited. Have had best deals from price matching HN against Bing.

  • +2

Get them to price match appliances online, or just get it from appliances online.

  • Anywhere but Bing Lee, crappy customer service.

  • +1

I would go neither, looking online you will probably be able to save more than the 10% through some smart shopping depending on what you are after.

  • they are the same mob
appliances online is way better, service wise, jb simply cannot beat nor can good guys or norman for that matter

  • Niether, go to winning appliances if you are in sydney

  • Be aware you can't pay with more than 3 giftcards if paying online (at least last time I shopped at TGG?) and have to head in-store, even if they don't have it in stock/have to get it from an other store, which ends up being 2 trips to the store..

  • Even though they're the same company, I've found JB easier to deal with than TGG. I've had very poor experience in TGG stores, failure to deliver rebates, and poor communication and inaccurate stock numbers online.

I feel part of it is TGG is usually in a strip with nothing else of interest, so if you actually bother to drive to a store with a purchase intention in mind, they don't feel they have to work that hard to make a sale. You've sunk some time into being there, they have to do a pretty bad job for you to leave empty-handed. JB has more departments to offer, and punters who might just be buy-curious, which is where actual salesmanship comes in.
