Pro tip: Make sure you’re selecting EFTPOS on your card before tapping to avoid the Aldi’s card surcharge

    • does this work on tapping from wallet card?

      • +3

No, if it’s a physical card you’d need to insert and select savings

        • -2

Did it work with credit cards too?

        • Are you sure? My Samsung Wallet app allows you to select Eftpos for those cards that have it.

      • +3

If Apple Wallet - then yes. If you double click right side button, it will show "choose payment option". Choose "eftpos SAV" or "eftpos CHQ" depending on bank. I always do this and don't get surcharged (for Visa/Mastercard debit).

        • -3

          what about credit card

        • +11

You probably should have also mentioned that this only works if:

          • The payment card supports eftpos when stored on Apple Pay, and
          • The payment card itself supports eftpos.

          For example:

          • The physical Westpac debit card supports eftpos and Mastercard, and the digital card stored on Apple pay also supports eftpos and Mastercard.
          • The physical ING debit card supports eftpos and Visa, but the digital card stored on Apple Pay only supports Visa.
          • The physical Macquarie debit card only supports Mastercard, so the digital card stored on Apple Pay still only supports Mastercard.
        • +2

Actually tried and tested didn't work with Apple Pay eftpos SAV or CHQ, also confirmed both cards supported it.

        • +1

I've deleted my old CBA debit Mastercard on Apple Wallet and added a new one (to be able to select SAV/Mastercard). When tapped using Apple Pay with this card, it didn't show the different payment options to choose from, instead, it automatically used Eftpos, i.e. without any credit card surcharge appeared on the docket. Don't know if this is typical. My device is iPhone 13 Pro with iOS18

    • -4

      Just pay cash.

    • How do you select EFTPOS on your card? For me HSBC 2% cashback debit card never gets surcharged so it is detected as EFTPOS by default I guess

      • Hmm…. are you inserting the physical card? If so, you won't be getting the 2% rebate from HSBC (which is only for tapped purchases below $100), right?

When I tap using the card stored in Google Wallet, I always get surcharged by ALDI…but since I get 2% back by tapping, the 0.5% charged by ALDI I can swallow.

        • Tap with your physical HSBC card instead of Google Wallet and you won't get charged 0.5% @ Aldi.

          • @CVonC: Yeah right this is the way I do it. I thought using it via a digital wallet will not earn you the 2% cashback

            • +1

@sub102: Now that I've read this thread, I've realise I've been missing out! I've been using the digital wallet, which gets you about 1.5% rebate instead of the 2% because of ALDI's fee. :-(

  • Ultimate Everything except Eats?

  • +2

Don't leave it til the last day either as their systems might have a nation-wide failure for activating gift cards, which happened last time around.

    • +1

      It happened to me.

  • +1

Say I want to buy the new iPhone from JB. Can I use 14 x $100 gift cards or is there a limit on cards per transaction?

    • +1

Same question but for PS5 Pro on EBGames.

    • +6

no limit. Just don't be an idiot like I've seen and take the cards out of the paper packaging and bring something to scratch/prescratch the cards. The lady I saw was in the queue quite a bit ahead of me fumbling the whole process and I scanned all my cards and paid for my phone before she got 5 scanned. Didn't stay to see the rest.

      • Do you still need to enter the pin when scan JB gift cards?

        • +1

The pin numbers can be a bit hard to read as well, small font and remainants of that silver cover. I wrote the pin on the back of each one in marker pen. Made the process a lot easier to prep all card before you arrive.

    • +2

To avoid holding up the queue, you can swap the ultimate cards into JB gift cards and can be used for JB online.

I had 15 ultimate him from the last Coles sale, went onto the ultimate gift card website and swapped them into JB gift cards.

Used all 15 JB cards online in 1 transaction without any issue.

      • +2

I thought only will only accept 5 gift cards - not the case?

      • Does this work for The Good Guys also? Are you saying that it merges them into one usable card?

        • +4

Not sure about The Good Guys and no it doesnt merge.

So what i did was i purchased 15 Ultimate him from coles, went onto the Ultimate gift card website and swapped them into JB gift card (i did 15 swaps). So i recieved 15 emails containing $100 digital JB gift cards.

Since they are digital JB gift cards, at JB online checkout i copied and pasted the card numbers and pins 15 times.

It is abit of work but i prefered this way over showing up at the phyical store and swiping the 15 gift cards and entering the pin over and over, espcially on a busy day you'll be holding up the queue.

  • Anyone paid with those for price-matched stuff at OfficeWorks?

it says "no other offer" but I assume that relates to actual card purchase?

    • +7

Paying with gift card is never an offer.Thats just a means of payment.

  • If I want to book using these cards at Hotels.com, how many cards can I use to make a booking?

  • 15% when

  • Any of these includes Airbnb?

    • +5

      No.

Airbnb currently does not participate in the Ultimate gift card scheme (or the TCN gift card scheme, for that matter).

If Airbnb was on any of the Ultimate gift cards in this deal, Airbnb would have been included in the table in the deal description.

      • @WookieMonster Any idea when 15% off Jb hifi gift cards will come? I just want to stack as much as I can this time :)

        • You would think that TCN would run a 15% off deal at Coles on some of their gift cards (including a couple covering JB Hi-Fi) around Black Friday this year, because that is what they have done for the last four Black Friday sales periods at Coles.

In terms of Ultimate gift cards, it is harder to predict, because sales for them have not been as consistent this year.

  • -2

There's no sale. Just low prices every day at ALDI. Oh nvm, that's must be an outdated slogan

  • Anybody knows how to reserve an iPhone at JB HIFI?

  • So if u dont use these card for 18 months. You get charged 90 cent per month in balance?

    https://faqs.one4all.com/article/107-how-long-is-my-one4all-…).

    • That's for US?

These ones should be 3 years with no fee.

      • +1

That One4All website is actually for the UK.

You are correct in saying that the Ultimate gift cards in Australia do not charge any account keeping fees, because that was made illegal nearly five years ago.

For the gift cards pictured in this deal, they actually do not expire until the date printed on the gift card packaging (which is more than 5 years from now). If you purchase the Ultimate gift cards in the older packaging, the balance on those expires 3 years from the date of purchase).

  • anyway to avoid surcharge at aldi on credit card?

  • Hi,
So can I tap HSBC everyday global from wallet and not be charged the levy?

    • +1

My understanding is that HSBC does not support eftpos on a mobile wallet for their Visa debit card. If this is still the case, when you tap your mobile wallet, the payment will be routed through the Visa network and you will pay the 0.5% surcharge for Visa (and Mastercard) payments. (I do not have an HSBC Visa debit card, so I cannot confirm whether eftpos support has been added for this debit card on mobile wallets recently.)

However, a conversation on a different ALDI deal earlier this year revealed:

      • +1

Glad to finally learn that. Been using the HSBC card on my phone thinking all contactless payment goes through visa/mastercard and you only qualify for the 2% cashback if it's paid through the visa network. Now to pull out the actual physical card from my wallet from now on.

      • +1

Thanks @WookieMonster, I tapped using physical HSBC card at Aldi, and was not charged levy.

  • Would ALDI accept TCN Luxury EFTPOS cards without incurring any 0.5% surcharge? @WookieMonster

    • +5

      Yes.

I have been using regular TCN eftpos gift cards multiple times this year at ALDI (including a couple of days ago) and have never been charged the 0.5% surcharge. The reason this the case is that when you swipe the card on the EFTPOS terminal, you need to route the payment through eftpos SAV. Any payments routed through eftpos SAV (or eftpos CHQ) at ALDI will not attract the surcharge (as per the FAQ linked in the deal description).

As an aside, the ALDI receipt reports regular TCN eftpos gift cards as Bendigo Bank Visa, but that has no bearing on whether you need to pay the surcharge.

      • @WookieMonster Is the 0.5% surcharge meant to be waived on the Westpac Mastercard Debit card when it is swiped? I swiped the Westpac debit card at ALDI a few months ago but was still charged the surcharge. I chose CHQ. I rarely shop at ALDI so haven't tried again.

        • Some dual-network cards on some mobile wallets will let you choose between eftpos (SAV/CHQ) and Visa/Mastercard (CR) on your device. For example, I added my Westpac debit card to Apple Wallet. Whenever I pay with the card from Apple Wallet, I get an option “Choose Payment Option” I don’t select the Mastercard option, instead I choose the “eftpos CHQ” option and don’t pay any ALDI surcharge.

          • @io: I swiped the physical Westpac card but will try again if I'm back at ALDI. Thanks.

            • @trixieb: With physical Westpac card you will have to pay the surcharge. With mobile wallet set to “eftpos CHQ” you won’t pay the surcharge.

FYI - HSBC debit physical card do not pay surcharge with tap and pay. This is not the case for Westpac debit physical card.

              • @io: Thanks. I got confused as I read on OzB that swiping the physical card avoids the surcharge at ALDI but it doesn't apply to Westpac.

          • @io: I wonder whether that is still the case (or how much longer that will still be the case).

        • Hmmm I have swiped an ING dual-network debit card at ALDI in the past and have chosen SAV and was not asked to pay a surcharge.

I may try the Westpac Debit Mastercard the next time I am at ALDI, because if you swipe and choose CHQ, you are not supposed to be charged the 0.5% surcharge (because CHQ routes through eftpos). If that is the case for some reason, I wonder whether it is an error in how ALDI has programmed their checkouts for CHQ payments…

You can also insert the card and choose CHQ (assuming the chip is not damaged). That should avoid the 0.5% surcharge.

Did you receipt from ALDI say your payment went through the eftpos or Mastercard network?

          • @WookieMonster: Westpac set up my debit card as a CHQ account instead of SAV. I found out at the ATM. Don't know if it would make a difference at ALDI if I choose SAV instead of CHQ.

Is it the same no surcharge with a Virgin Money debit card when I swipe or insert the physical card?

I might have to go into ALDI and experiment!

P.S. Sorry threw out the receipt and didn't check.

          • +2

@WookieMonster: @io I tested the physical Westpac Debit Mastercard and Virgin Money Debit Visa card today at ALDI and did not pay a surcharge. The system only allowed me to insert the cards and not swipe. There was a message to insert the cards after I swiped.

With the Westpac card, when I chose SAV, payment was declined. I had to choose CHQ and receipt says eftpos CHEQUE (with DECLINED for eftpos SAVINGS). I was able to choose SAV using the Virgin Money card with eftpos SAV on receipt.

  • can I use Vanilla visa cards from coles at Aldi.. any idea please? @WookieMonster

  • Is there a card activation fee like there is at Coles?

  • HSBC 99 transaction for extra. Not sure if applicable

  • The offer did not work at the time of store opening. The store manager was apologetic but said he will have to contact the head office to know what is going on. Had anyone had any luck?

    • Just bought a few and worked at the cashier. Sydney NSW

No advertised sales but the cashier said she saw in the catalogue so they seemed to be aware of it.

      • In my case, the staff verified that the offer is valid but somehow the checkouts did not offer the discount. In Sydney CBD. There were few more customers in queue and all were refused.

  • Same here in Brisbane and still waiting in store.

    • Tried Coorparoo and Fortitude Valley Store. Both got 10% discount applied.

  • +1

Melbourne here, didn't see the promo on the gift card section, however proceeded to the cashier and got the 10% discount, actually 9.5% since 0.5% is the transaction fee.

  • +1

Nare Warren store manager decided to limit 2 pp after 15 mins of the store opening. They were almost out of the $100 when I got mine, so it doesn't matter much to most people aware of the discount.

  • Bought them by paying cash

  • anyone tried using coles or woolies cards?

  • How can I exchange ultimate gift cards to egift?? i can’t redeem it because of not having expiry date

    • +3

Did you follow the instructions on the Ultimate gift card website on how to use the gift card? It tells you the website you need to go to obtain the expiry date: https://www.myprepaidcentre.com.au/ You need to enter the Proxy Card Number (PCN) on this website to access the expiry date (and you can find the PCN on the physical gift card).

  • +1

apparently at my local aldi, the 'gift card system infrastructure' is updating and u cant buy any today

  • Went to two Aldi stores here in QLD. Apparently promotion haven’t started and there are no displays saying discounts at the moment

  • Do they replenish stock on daily basis? The gift cards are already out of stock in Melbourne stores. Forgot to ask the store person.

    • Did you get an answer to this one?

      • +2

This promo is a joke, got told at my local store limit 2 cards per person where it states 5 per person on deal heading….

  • so turns out hornsby aldi is tryna soft stop people from buying gift cards, they still have the same sign up as the day before regarding a gift card infrastructure upgrade and cards cant be bought, but i tried and they worked

    • Same with my Local ALDI, after my second visit today the staff called the store manager and allowed me to purchase some. But they were very stressed out and asked me where I saw the discount news and if I could provide them the link.

      • they scanned as normal so no dramas apart from a misleading sign over the gift cards, very bizarre

        • @Jollystacker Hi, do you mean they scanned with the discount applied? Thanks.

  • Went to Aldi loganholme QLD Picked up some $50 Ultimate everyone without any issues , no celebration or birthday cards were available and when asked the store assistant got told they were pulled off the shelves due to not working , also had some him , her and home available.
