  • PSA: Avoid the AliExpress store named 'Wange Choice Store' that also selling the Retroid Pocket 4, it's a scam.

    • cheers

    • How do you know this?

      • +3

Their previous listing (which has been removed on AliExpress) had reviews with photo of customers receiving a Chinese Tetris Console.

Store also has 0% feedback rating.

Anyone with these how long do you actually play retro games. Theres so many new games do you have time for old games?

    • +9

I spend most time playing retro games, because new games are often terrible. This gen has been a bit average.

      • +2

This gen has been a bit average.

That’s very generous. I honestly regret buying my XBSX.

        • Ahh yeah I was saying something similar today to my mate about the PS5. With the way the games have been going, and if PS5 pro costs are indicative of future console costs, I can't see myself staying on board for the next generation.

    • You choose. There is no obligation to play new games.

    • +1

Does setting up new device, custom os and rom set count as playing? Asking for a friend.

      • +1

That is definitely a hobby in itself.

    • It's a pretty good steam link client and can run other stuff too - it's android by default and can be changed if you want.

    • +1

I find that when I 'acquired' 9001 retro games on a device I was less inclined to stick with any of them because I didn't pay for it and I'm spoiled for choice

      • +1

Yes thats what i find. Things for free is brushed over. Sometimes the feeling of gamepass games.

    • +1

I have a good gaming PC but I reckon I spend more time on the couch just playing this thing, I'm doing a full playthrough of Super Mario Galaxy 2 and Pokemon FireRed at the moment. It's great.

      • I have a massive list of games i would like to play. Now with the ally i can do it anywhere. I just dont see how people dont have a backlog.

        • +1

Some people like older games. Having fun has nothing to do with new or old.

          • @rk1314: Yer true main thing is fun. Personally i like new experiences that i haven't played that are fun.

            But each to there own.

  • Can it run Yuzu?

    • Yep, lighter games. Don't buy it in place of a Switch though.

      • This is cheaper than buying the MIG switch and dumper. Just got a Switch though but curious on this device and why it costs so much.

        • It runs pretty much any other android emulator well, up to GC/Wii and PS2. It's solid for Android games too.

          • @Orion au: Does GC run well?

            • @Charbel91: Yeah mostly. I think the very heavy star wars games have issues, but otherwise there's no issues I know of.

  • Might hold out for the Pocket 5.

It's on pre order at the moment. Around US 227.00 (AU $337) delivered. So about $50 more at the moment. That's with the pre order code of RP5SAVE10 added at checkout (https://www.goretroid.com/en-au).

For those interested, ships end of October. Has a larger 5.5” AMOLED display (vs 4.7 LCD). Uses a Snapdragon 865 processor that on paper is similar performance wise to the processor in the RP4P, but there’s plenty of opinion that drivers should see a small performance boost with the processor.

Was $199 for a day this week and while in preorder they’re doing it for $209.

The retroid site doesn’t add tax at checkout too.

But it does have shipping cost.

  • still waiting for rg556 deal

Need a discounted odin 2 pro instead 😅

If anyone is on the fence about purchasing this, I'd say just wait for the sales that will be coming up soon. I have a RP3+ and so many other devices and for as good as this RP4+ is, this price isn't super spectacular. I got a RG556 a few months off Aliexpress for about $50 less then this and while this is technically a better device on paper its not worth this price tbh. But ymmv i guess.

    • Agree! Especially compared to the Rp5.

These are fantastic. I bought a second hand one for AUD300 a while back and it's become my favourite handheld. I use it with my AR glasses and together with Geforce Now, I've completed gotten rid of all my other gaming setups including the steam deck. The only con I have with this is the sleep mode loses battery too quickly. I tend to just shut it down overnight these days.

    • Do you not have a list of games you would want to play rather then old games you have already played.

      • +1

a bit of both actually. For 16/32bit era games, I just stick to ones that I never finished as a kid (Chrono trigger and Final fantasy series), for newer games it's whatever I feel like. Right now I'm playing Black Myth Wukong on geforce now and Super mario world on the wii.

      • Can old games you haven't played yet be part of that list?

        • +1

Shit you have a list thats 40 years old lol.

          • @Jklaro: Yep. I'm at peace with the idea that I'll never get through it though!

    • What's the AR glasses for?

    • What AR glasses do you have?
