      I'd love to know what this brutal manner you're talking about is, because in Australia the animal is stunned before it's slaughtered unless it's Kosher.

      The only difference between halal and any other meat is it uses a reversible stunning method, so in theory if the cow wasn't dead a minute later from bleeding to death it would continue to live once the stunning wore off.

      There is no scam, and it's not "ripping off" anyone.
      The certification process exists to bring a standard to the act.
      Kosher certification has requirements as well, in terms of food preparations, and obviously, the requirements are enforced through an inspector who will charge money for their time and issue the certificate.

      The idea behind Halal, is that a human does not have the 'right' to take the life of an animal.
      It's God's permissibility for taking the life of the animal, for food purposes,
      so you must say a God's blessing as you slice the jugular vein of the animal.
      It's a respect and mercy shown in the action.
      The knife MUST be sharp (as prescribed), otherwise it's wrong already.
      The blood needs to be drained.
      There is no electricity, shock, stun guns, drowning etc… involved unto the animal.

      This is the gist of the Halal procedure.
      The thing is, in abattoirs and with mass production, I think the "blessing" is just played in the background as an audio recording, while the person slicing the vein cuts the jugular of the chicken, cow, etc…

      Many non-Muslim countries practice this method of killing the animal, ie. cutting the jugular, except they don't say any blessings. I had a Coptic Orthodox colleague, who told me that the meat even tastes better, if the animal is killed in that 'humane' way of slicing at the jugular, and draining the blood.
