Anyone Recommend a Decent Phone Plan?

Hi, The amount of companies now are overwhelming, trying to get the best bang for buck for me an my partner.

I'm with Felix at the moment and paying $45 doesn't seem justified for 20 Mbps.

We both own our phones, and it doesn't matter monthly or yearly.

Any answers greatly appreciated.

Cheers

It depends on how many GB of data do you need every month. If you have wifi at home and work, yearly plan is much cheaper. Any preference with certain network? Vodafone/Optus/Telstra network? I think for example west Sydney maybe better choose Optus/Telstra network and choose which MVNO or go straight with Optus/Telstra.

    • Yeah, the question is too open ended when we don't know how much data OP needs, nor the network they are aiming to be on.

OP, if you're unsure of which network is best for your area, you may want to get a couple of cheap sim cards for the three major networks and test out reception at home and places you frequent.

Also, is international roaming important to you? Some providers will have good international roaming options whilst others are a rip off.

If you have a CommBank card, pretty hard to beat the plans shown here

  • I mean, Felix's 20Mbps limit is on their unlimited data plan. You aren't getting unlimited data without a speed cap, and from last I checked, Felix has the highest speed cap.

If you want faster, you'll need to be specific with what cap you are happy with. Personally, with my usage, I just have a year long expiry with Boost. Works best for me.

  • Boost for Telstra and 5G
Woolworths if you shop in store at Woolworths (the 10% off one shop a month and regular 5% off WW group gift cards more than paid for the phone plan for me, before they cut off online deliveries getting the discount)
    Catch for cheap
JB with large giftcards if you use a lot of data and want Telstra, Circle.Life or Moose if you want a lot of data with anyone else.

Woolies have stopped offering 10% for new sign ups.

      .

      • Thanks, didn't realise that. Woolies really knows how to kill any value in their products, don't they?

        • Maybe they've reached the market penetration they wanted? It will be interesting to see what the auto renewal price and data size will be (auto renewal set before 3 Sep locks in 10% inclusion)

Just port between Lebara , boost or amaysim each month, saving you heaps.

  • Kogan offers buy one get one free yearly sim plan around November if I remember correctly.
That would be worth considering I guess.

  • i thought felix was $40 at full price, how are u getting $45?

  • Woolworths Mobile $36 pm (55gb) 5g telstra and includes 10% off shop each month

    • $36 pm

Its only $36 if you are ER member. Otherwise its $40.

And if you are an ER member you get 10% off the p/m price AND a 10% shop each month.

That 10% off is why I use Woolworths mobile.

But I still wish they had some variety in their plans. Like a cheap plan with no data I could donate data to as required from the main plan. Or, to get the same result, a family plan with multiple SIMs on on account sharing data.

      • I think almost every ozbargainer has a ER account considering you get 2000 points upon sign up

If you use 25GB data or less:

Spintel $22 Mobile Plan Optus 4G
    $480 Over 24 Months
    $14/mth for first 6 months, then $22/mth

iinet / PTG 25GB Small Plan Vodafone 4G
    $525 Over 24 Months
$12.50/mth for first 6 months, then $25/mth ongoing

felix 25GB Mobile Plan Vodafone 5G
    $555 Over 24 Months
$10/mth for first 3 mths, then $25/mth. Use promo code FELIX10

dodo $25 Mobile Plan Optus 4G
    $562.50 Over 24 Months
    $19.80 for first 6 months, then $24.80/mth

You can find cheaper deals with 365 day data allowance, (eg. CatchConnect 200GB for $150 first time and $200 each renewal) but they are a bit of a trap, because once you use up all of your data, you have to pay a renewal of the plan, so you may end spending a lot more than originally budgeted. The safest approach is a monthly prepaid plan.

    • Not necessarily true on the yearly plans. I’ve been on yearly plans for years now and never gone over. I just estimated how much data I use, found a plan that covers that plus enough buffer if I use more than usual, and I’ve never gone over my data allowance. Yearly plans are often the cheapest too.

      • I do the same thing with myself… I only use ~40Gb mobile data per year because I'm on home/work wifi so much. Use to be extra cautious and got Kogan's 200Gb M plan but the S plan with 120Gb more than meets my needs and has a huge contingency for when I don't have NBN up or am traveling.

Plus, one can always get a secondary service to use for data only until the next renewal. This way one can keep their existing plan for unlimited calls/texts.

I really depends on how much data one uses.
