ShopBack Supermarket Visa Gift Card Replacement - What Is Everyone Doing for Coles Discounts?

Now that shopback have gutted the supermarket visa gift card (dropped it to 0.5% cashback) - what is everyone doing for discounted coles shopping?

I have a few thoughts:

  • 2% cashback on tap transactions from HSBC under $100 (no airmiles from loading via a CC)
  • Shopback superswap (1.75% cashback and airmiles from CC but cant purchase giftcards with these as you swap for coles branded GCs rather than a prepaid card limited to certain MCCs)
  • Other avenues (rewards portals etc) for up to 3% discount off coles branded GCs - same issues as above

Anyone got anything clever they are doing?

  • I had this NAB credit card recently and converted the points into $650 Coles gift cards.

    • nice but I need A LOT more than 600 bucks worth ;)

Could purchase 5 of these Mastercards and get FlyBuys pts. They did the math and it works out to around 5.2% off.

But tapping with HSBC card for the instant 2% is reliable and doesn't involve any additional work or needing to lock up your savings on gift cards.

    • Yea but what do I buy them with ;). I was using supermarket swap until they gutted it

You are not allowed to buy gift cards or prepaid cards with gift cards anyway, you are forced to pay cash.

        • +1

Correct. Thats why the supermarket card was great - it wasnt a giftcard (rather a pre paid card limited to certain merchants) so the coles tills didnt reject it when purchasing GCs….

Source - bought some giftcards with my remaining supermarket cards an hour ago….

  • Onsi - Coles GC @ 10%

    • is that an employee benefit platform?

what is everyone doing for discounted coles shopping?

10% off one shop each month with Coles Plus Saver.

    Stacks with any GC offer…

    • "The 10% off discount isn't valid for purchases of all gift cards" - straight from their T&C - are you saying this isnt correct?

      • "The 10% off discount isn't valid for purchases of all gift cards"

        I didn't say it was….

You can pay with discounted Coles gift cards…

Ah gotcha - so once you have a discounted coles GC you can use it to pay for your bill which once a month you can reduce by 10%. Still need a good way to get the discounted GC in the first place

  • Flybuys 4 x $50 spend for 10,000 flybuys points = 20% discount. Manage several family flybuys accounts and usually receive this offer on a few and do 2 at a time. I used to get 40% off each week regularly by stacking the Fri-Wed and Thurs-Sat offers but now only get these on one account. Every time AMEX or Commonwealth Yellow have a 10% off offer for Coles, Liquorland or First Choice I buy Coles Myer GC's. I used to be able to get 10 each time with AMEX from 2 accounts but now they are limiting these deals to Primary card holders. It seems across the board, harder to get discounts. Even in store, there are significantly fewer markdowns maybe because there is less stock of many items.

  • AGL rewards has 4% off Cole’s GC. T&Cs state the GC can only be used In-store though.

Yeah Coles still doesn't have an option to apply gift cards at online checkout, so they're always in store only.

  • Macquarie Marketplace if you have a Macquarie account - 3% off Coles Gift cards.

  • @WookieMonster - have I missed any tricks here?

A small number of gift card portals sell Category Choice Groceries gift cards at 3% or 4% off everyday, and that gift card would be the closest replacement to the ShopBack Supermarket Visa gift card. However, there are likely going to be purchase limits for Category Choice Groceries gift cards on these portals (e.g. HCF Thank You limit you to $1000 spend per week).

My other line of thought was similar to the comment above from @Yola, where you (creatively) use cashback offers to purchase a gift card that can be used in-store at Coles. For example:

      • My main use of 7-Eleven digital gift cards is to use them to purchase Coles Group & Myer gift cards at Shell Coles/Reddy Express.

      • Whenever there is cashback for Special gift cards, I usually purchase an Aussie Explorer gift card and then use that to purchase a Coles Group & Myer gift card at Shell Coles/Reddy Express.

      • Only just noticed the ShopBack Supermarket now at 0.5% which led me here via Google. Hadn't forgotten about the HCF gift cards which I have access to. Think I'll buy Vanilla Visa at Woolies for this week's deal (split pay with HSBC 2%), then try to use them to buy the Category Choice at HCF to then buy Coles $250 Mastercards with the Category Choice (but I assume Vanilla Visa wouldn't be accepted as payment for HCF gift cards, if not will just use Vanilla Visa to buy the Coles $250 Mastercards).

I assume Vanilla Visa wouldn't be accepted as payment for HCF gift cards

It should work. Vanilla Visa gift cards have always worked on the HCF Thank You platform for me (including a couple of days ago).

if not will just use Vanilla Visa to buy the Coles $250 Mastercards

          That probably will not work.

          • @WookieMonster: "if not will just use Vanilla Visa to buy the Coles $250 Mastercards" - just tried this and it declined….

Might have to sign up to HCF….

            • +1

@Davelovesdealz: If I remember correctly, you will not have access to HCF Thank You until 30 days after you join HCF on an eligible policy.

              • @WookieMonster: Do you have to get a fancy one to get access?

                • @Davelovesdealz: No.

The terms and conditions state that you can get access if you hold any of the following products:

Any Australian residents hospital or ancillary product (excluding Ambulance Only) or any Life and Disability, Term Life, Family Plan – FPL, Income Protection, Salary Continuance Insurance, Recovery Cover, Crisis Cash and Serious Illness Cover, Smart Term, Women’s care, Income Assist, Medical Trauma, Bounce Back or Critical Illness Cover.

The terms and conditions also state you can access HCF Thank You after holding an eligible policy for one week, so the waiting period is not as bad as I remembered!

      • @WookieMonster how can you use 7-Eleven digital cards at Shell Coles/reddy Express?

        • You use them like a regular Visa card stored on your mobile wallet.

7-Eleven digital gift cards are prepaid Visa gift cards that work at merchants using one of the following Merchant Category Codes:

          • 5499: Miscellaneous Food Stores – Convenience Stores and Specialty Markets
          • 5541: Service Stations (With or without Ancillary Services)

Have a look at this FAQ to see where people have reported the 7-Eleven digital gift card has worked as a payment method.

On the other hand, Shell eGift Cards (which are issued by the same company as 7-Eleven digital gift cards) are actually restricted to participating Shell service stations (including all Shell Coles Express and Shell Reddy Express service stations). If you look at this FAQ, you can see where people have reported trying to use their Shell eGift Cards.

          • @WookieMonster: Interesting…I thought 7 eleven card was restricted like the shell card to either 7 eleven petrol or standard 7 eleven stores

Btw I have discovered a new fuel card called cliqit available via RACV and seems similar to shopback and cashrewards fuel card…any reviews on this one? (3% off)

Finally how is the new shopback fuel gift card? Comparable to cashrewards fuel gift card?

            • +1

I have never heard of that before, plus I do not have an RACV membership (and not eligible for one). Google suggests Cliqit is a trading name of RACV, so that means I probably cannot test this myself.

Finally how is the new shopback fuel gift card? Comparable to cashrewards fuel gift card?

You are asking someone who does not have a ShopBack account (and refuses to get one). :)

Having just looked at it, it looks like it functions the same as a Cashrewards Fuel gift card. The only noticeable difference is that you have many more denominations to choose from on the ShopBack website.

@WookieMonster: Ta, guess I have to be the tester for cliqit

              • @WookieMonster: Cliqit help actually sends you to this page…https://egift.activationspot.com/egift?

                Mod: Edited link.

looks like issued by Blackhawk Network which is what I think Cashrewards, Shopback, Shell, 7 Eleven are all issued by as they all use cardbalance.com.au to check your balance?

                • @zooter: You posted a link to your card details, you might want to unpublish your comment.

                  • @JIMB0: I did not even purchase the card, that's the help link…I think it's not a real card, but a sample card on their website

                • @zooter: Yep, that is a gift card scheme owned by Blackhawk Network. I have only ever seen https://egift.activationspot.com/egift used for gift cards from Blackhawk Network.

And if you have not already used that gift card, @JIMB0 is right.
