On sale is Anbernic's latest handheld retro game console that's a little bit different to other handhelds in this form factor as it features a joystick. Like the RG40XX H this one is able to handle games up to the PS1, as well as the PSP, Gameboy, NES, SNES, Sega Genesis, Mega Drive, Dreamcast and more. Using Portmaster it can handle a lot of PC ports and there's custom ROM support including MinUI and KNULLI.

Features include a 4" IPS 640x480 display, ultra thin bezels, dpad, joystick with adjustable RGB, ABXY buttons, L/R shoulder buttons, Mini HDMI output, dual microSD card slots, WiFi ac, Bluetooth 4.2, 3200mAh battery, USB-C charging, 3.5mm audio jack, vibration motor and more.

The 64GB, 64GB+128GB and 64GB+256GB microSD card variants are on sale in either Black, Blue or White.

    latest

    anbernic: New drop in 3..2..1

(The idea of the rgb nipple on this one is kinda growing on me actually…)

As we all know RGB makes everything faster 😏

      • Cant get the code to work :(

        • Which variant are you choosing on the page and what coupon?

          • @Clear: I tried the 64+256 with code NNNRG40XXV256 and it says invalid

            • @designate: My mistake. Please use NNN40XXV256

          • @Clear: 128 and 256

  • Very tempting…..but i don't need it as i already have the rg35xx plus…..

I've got the H version of this. The horizontal one and really love it. You'd be surprised how much bigger a 4 inch screen feels compared to the 3.5 inch consoles. Plays everything up to and including ps1 so you've got a LOT of stuff you can play on it. Probably does stuff after ps1 too but i can't be bothered trying stuff like that. Happy with old school stuff. Also should add i got mine from these guys too. Took a few days for it to be actually sent but once it was in the post it came in about 10 or so days.

Any deals for the RG40XX H?

Sure, 4 is bigger than 3.5, but for half the price, I'd go an R36S, the joystick doesn't light up (not that you'd use it anyway), but it does have 2 of them which makes PSP and Portmaster a LOT better.

    • The R36S is a cheap knockoff device and the build quality can’t really be compared to a real Anbernic device.

it does have 2 of them which makes PSP

The PSP only had one stick too. Do you mean PSX?

      • Also these devices struggle with PSP.
All the games I tried had some level of frame drop ranging from minor (Shin Budokai) to unplayable (god of war games)

      • My two most played this year, that aren't a Steam Deck, are the R36S, and the Anbernic RG556. They are pretty comparable in build quality, both are pretty baller. 556 has an OLED which is nice, but the R36S screen is no slouch (or at least my version, lol, there's half a dozen), but that's not really build quality per se. The triggers on the R36S are super clicky which is a bit meh, the joysticks on the Anbernic have significantly less range than most people want which is also meh.

But no, I meant PSP. Think about how many PSP games used the face buttons to move the camera (or the dpad in many other cases), mapping those buttons to a second stick can absolutely change the entire experience. Battlefront 2 on PSP is fine, bc it's portable Battlefront 2, but the second the Vita came out I threw my UMD in the bin and rebought it digitally to use that second stick.

Dumb question, does it comes with the games?

    • Even if it does best to just roll your own set anyway

      Just google it.

    • Carefully check the Options section of the ecommerce page, as that will determine if you get games included with the device or not.

  • @Clear, just realised there's a H version from your post last month, do you know if I'll be able to swap them or refund this one and get the H version? Thinking would be slightly better with an extra R analogue stick

    • I'll check with GB and will let you know.

      • Thanks! I managed to message support and they were able to change to the h model at no extra charge.

after read some review, this one does looks good on appearance but uses very old H700 chipset that Anbernic overstocked for years, it can run gba fine but barely on psp, DC,n64 or even saturn games

Anbernic release new model every month, the one releases next month RG406V should be a good one.
