anyone with the K6 grind for espresso can recommend?

I've got the K1 currently, and looking to upgrade

    • +1

Yes, I have the K6 and can recommend it for espresso. Works just as well as my DF64.

      • What roast of beans are you grinding? Does your df64 have upgraded burrs? I'm curious to understand the rationale between your comparison between the two

        • +2

My comparison between the two is simply because some people think a $100 grinder isn't as good as a $600 one (taking out the obvious difference of hand vs machine).

          • @ExPrinceHairy: Thanks for the info. It's good to know that a manual grinder can produce great results

            • @Robot16: The manual grinder can produce results as good as a powered grinder. The difference will depend on how many cups you are making at one time. If I had to make 4 cups in one go, I'd end up with a very strong right arm. My limit is 1 cup with my manual grinder. If anyone else wants me to make a coffee for them, they have to grind their own beans.

    • 'Great' quality grinder made in Taiwan, I've had it for 6 months. But Im now looking at electric grinders, cause its a pain in the ass to grind more than one drink 😂😂😂

      • +2

Use a drill? I am thinking of using my Ozito cordless screwdriver as it is quite torquey but doesn't spin too fast.
        https://www.bunnings.com.au/ozito-3-6v-cordless-screwdriver-…?

        • +2

Not sure a drill would go down well in the office haha

      • +1

Taiwanese company yes, but I have K4 and it’s made in China… even the instructions were in simplified characters, targeted at Chinese market I guess. Maybe K6 is diff and made in Taiwan.

    • +1

Have used k6 for espresso and can recommend, it’s a lot smoother than a typical conical, but still has the similarities of a normal conical if you know what I mean. I use it as my travel grinder with my picopresso, definitely pairs well together!

      • I have the same setup - bang for your buck! King rinder deal from King tightarse LOL!

  • +3

Thank you for posting, I’ve been looking for a replacement grinder for 6 months. My Porlex mini II died after using a drill. I like that this one is designed to fit the drill but is there any settings guidance to ensure it lasts?
    Thanks

    • +1

I think drills may spin a bit too fast am going to use a cordless screwdriver as above

    • +2

I had a porlex mini II, and now own a K6. I've never used a drill on either but the K6 is built so much more solidly than the porlex it's not even a comparison. I'm not surprised the porlex couldn't handle those forces. From memory there is guidance for drill usage on their website/manual.

Thanks mate, needed a new one after the Hario broke.

  • Just ground my third espresso in this before running it through my Picopresso. Great grinder!

  • Great hand grinder. I use it for travel - can cover all bases. Recommended - particularly at this price.

  • How is this for aeropress? And compraisons cf 1zpresso?

  • I just bought this last week noooooooooooooooo

    Good price tho

    • I bought two days ago for a (delayed) farther's day gift…

  • Got the K4 last sale, very happy with it. Just cold brew and aeropress for me, no idea how it goes with espresso.

Someone did a pretty deep comparison here, if it helps make a decision!
    https://www.reddit.com/r/espresso/comments/15n5yw4/ive_used_…

  • Will this do fine grinding? I prefer fine grinding as most grinders do coarse grinding only.

    • The card it comes with has a setting for turkish coffee, so it should easily grind to espresso. It's not stepless, if that matters to you, but I think each click is small enough (16 microns) that you should be able to dial it in fine.

    • +1

Have you not read a single comment before posting? The entire thread talks about how this is designed for for espresso, which is very fine.

  • Good grinder. I got this when they discontinued the k4. It’s much better than the timemore c3 I have.
I use it for espresso and gives a well balanced consistent grind.

  • Anyone have recommendations for the amount of clicks on a K6 for a Moka pot and aeropress? Having some trouble dialing mine in.

    • +2

I find 50 clicks works great for Moka/aeropress, 90 clicks for pour over.

      • Cheers! I’ll try it out!

  • Got this during prime day and do 3 full grinds a day for 3 lots of moka pot fulls each day (70 clicks). I tend to grind the night before for the next day alot of the time as it does give you a good forearm workout after the 2nd grind.

    • Whats size moka pot?

      • +1

I think its a 6 cup officially? (always forget!) But it gives me 1 full cup of black coffee if that makes sense

  • OP

Now we definitely know your personal preferences.

    King TA = King 'Rinder

  • Opening these up for cleaning is a pain :/

I just blow mine out with an air compressor

    K2 = KK
    K4 = KKK + K
    K6 = KKK + KKK

I think the joke works better in some parts of the USA. :)

  • +1

Not sure if I was just unlucky, but had to return mine. Bought off amazon from same seller but the grinder couldn't grind fine enough for espresso even with the finest grind settings. I ended up buying a timemore that works pretty well

  • Would something like this make a difference to a coffee if you're using an ordinal Breville barista express with aldi medium roast?

    • +1

One benefit of hand grinding is it is not going to heat up the beans as much as a machine grinder, saying that you might not even notice the difference. Also less likely to wake up the rest of the house hold in the morning and can be taken travelling.

Downside is does add more to the process of having a coffee, which sucks when trying to make coffee for multiple people.

Newer Breville machines are now coming with Baratza grinders built in which should be better than the older Breville ones. So might be worth checking what you have.

If you are happy with what you got just stick to it. But if you want a grinder to give you more control over the variables in espresso coffee then find yourself an espresso focused hand grinder that has more finer adjustments than the k6.

  • Got the K6 last time around. Anyone got a small size factor scale that they use? Preferably USB rechargeable.

    • +1

i use a timemore nano scale, small enough to carry with my picopresso + 1zpresso

    • +1

      Have a look at:
      Timemore Black Mirror Mini
      Wacaco Exagram Pro

      • Thanks for the suggestions

  • How much dope do you cats smoke

  • How would this compare to a commandante?

    • That’s actually a funnier question than you may realise!

Commandante took legal action against Kingrinder - and a number of other companies - for competing in the market.

      • Commandante is an EU based company that has taken legal action against Kingrinder for spuriously obvious design features. Features which also exist in products from other EU companies which they have not tried to sue (Kinu).

Buy a Kinu instead of Commandante, as Kinu are not scumbag IP trolls.

Using this product 2-3 times a day would be comparable to being a teenage boy who wanks multiple times a day… I’ll leave the job of grinding coffee to my DF64 Gen 2 grinder to ensure that I’ve still got the arm energy to perform the stranger 😝:

  • Did quite a bit of research on the K6, it comes preconfigured for using with a drill. Make sure to rtfm to change it to the hand grind configuration.

Common reports of burrs rusting after 3-6months. K6 site has lots of warnings about not getting them wet, so best to not use RDT. Most static will dissipate after a few mins.

I ended up going with the 1zpresso K Ultra.

    • Makes me wish the K4 was still available somewhere - that one has titanium coated burrs

  • Yeah these are good for one shot coffees. Whether you'll bother with all the effort after a while vs electronic grinder is another thing. Good for the minimalist and enthusiast.

    • Don’t forget travel! I picked one up solely for travel, and it’s great on the road.

That said, for anyone not looking to sink $1K plus into a grinder, or who can’t, a hand grinder punches above its weight.

Eg, These will give better results in the cup - with greater control over grind size - than a cheaper motorised grinder, such as a Breville Smart Grinder Pro.

      • Yeah they good mate. Just need to learn the settings but you'd be able to fine tune it easily.
Still rocking an em0480, could always get rid of it but then need more containers and scales than just dosing into the group handle like I do.

        • Does that grind fine enough for espresso? Did you have to mod it?

          • +1

@King Tightarse: Yes, there was a shim mod (add a washer) so it goes finer. I'm still near the finest setting as beans get older but don't think thetw was enough height to add another last time I tried.

Anyway not interested in a better grinder at the moment, each time I look it end up being 600$ for something that still has issues 😂.

            • @G-rig: Right - I am holding back on this K6 now because reading up after all the comments, I see it can have rust on the burrs, which doesn't sound so great

              • @King Tightarse: Dunno what are they made out of, sounds odd.
                Always something wrong with everything.

Amazon free return, worthwhile trying out for the price, you may not like the extra effort.
Tempted to give it a go too and free up some bench space.

              • +2

@King Tightarse: Don't read the comments - just buy it and test it out. It's a great price for a capable hand grinder.

I've got two pricey benchtop grinders for my daily use, but take one of these on holidays and rate it.

Don't RDT (and doesn't need it anyway) and you shouldn't end up with any rust issues.

  • Thanks! Been eyeing this off for a while after watching Lance Hedrick's video.
