Japan Airlines: Melbourne to Tokyo from $942 Return (Oct, Jan-Jun Including Sakura Season) @ Beat That Filght

510

Japan Airlines is ranked as the 6th best airline in the world, and a 5-star airline. A direct flight on them from Melbourne for this price is unreal - note that some are direct, but sometimes the cheapest is via Singapore, still on JAL.

The cherry blossom or sakura is never perfectly predictable, but some early predictions are below:

A friend has a video series on the 10 Best Cherry Blossom Sakura Spots in Japan - Tokyo, Yamanashi! [4K] (CC)

I just tried a bunch again and they are? Which ones are you trying?

Tried the January ones. Looks like it might be working again but seats must be very limited. Doesn't work for 2 adults and 3 kids

    • worked for me

which are direct and which aren't? some have really long layovers

    • +6

Flights where it doesn't stop are direct, and flights that stop over are not

Don’t see any during sakura season

Japan Airlines is ranked as the 6th best airline in the world

Was curious and checked Qantas. Sitting at 24th, down from 17th. Ouch

      It's just being lazy

  • Panicked as i paid $1430 with JAL in February but noticed that the flights seem to be the ones with long layovers whereas I have direct both ways.

    • Gotta just not look and be happy with what you paid aye haha 🤣 we paid $1050 return and direct with Qantas for this November.

      • Haha. Yep! I turned off all of price alerts once I booked but still doesn't solve the OzB addiction…

    • I got a direct flight in April next year for $1060 Melb-Narita.

    • I would say even now that's a decent price. I'm looking at them direct for the same period and probably minimum $1500 for very specific dates but most of them would be $1750 minimum

      • Yeah, hence why I pulled the trigger. I could have saved about $400 by having an overnight stopover in Singapore but that adds an extra night in a hotel plus transport plus it was QANTAS on the last leg instead of JAL (so who knows how good/bad it would be given some of the recent things I've seen online). Not to mention - by that point, you just want to be home.

  • Managed to book directly with the airline for a trip in late Jan to late Feb (direct flight there, via SIN with a 2 hour layover on the way back) for a tick over $1000 a few days ago. Usually far less hassle booking directly with the airline (plus you get free seat selection when booking), but any sort of price around this range is very good for JAL

  • Booked late Jan early Feb. Good prices for JAL. Don't love the reviews for booking via Flight Network. Anyone got any experience/comments? Flights have appeared in my Qantas app, so that's a good sign I guess

I've used them as recently as July for a trans-Tasman flight with no issues.

      • Great. Thanks for the reply

    • Did you go direct? The layover flights that I saw for the same period you mentioned made the total duration about 30h.

flying is dangerous. direct only no stopover, take off and landing have the most accidents

  • JAL were beset with delays when we used them last year, I'd fly with ANA if I needed to again :/

    • Just your experience mate, we never had probs with them, flew 4x.

      • Let's hope so - in my case it was domestic legs which were terrible

  • Thinking of traveling to Tokyo and Osaka around Feb to very early March. Anyone have any experience traveling around this time?

Hope this helps someone find a gem without the crap long layovers and Qantas hell flights.

Below is a list of available dates for 10-14 day trips, only direct flights, and only booking direct with JAL with reasonable prices.

A few are $1,235 in Feb, the rest mostly $1,145, and $995 in late May and June.

    Departure dates:
    24 Feb
    2, 3, 4 March
    23, 28, 30 April

    2, 4, 9, 11, 16, 18 June.

    Returning dates:
    8, 16 March

    • Thanks for this - was able to find dates that worked for us and booked. Much appreciated.

      • Nice to know I helped. You'll have a great flight with JAL.

  • wondering how humid and rainy tokyo would be from 28 May to 8th June…got two kids under 3

    • Check out the averages for that period and see if it's tolerable.

If you could wait until late October to early November, it's better for clear skies and cool comfortable temperatures.

    • hey. it's generally fine. this year there was almost no rainy season in June. and the summer heat started in July and is still going

why cant they bloom during school holidays? So unfair!
