  • I heared you have to self-transfer the luggage in HAK, is that true?

    • +1

Nope, travelled from Syd to Beijing and back in 2023.

    • +2

      Dec 2023 -
MEL-HAK-PEK, my luggages were checked through.
PEK-HAK-MEL, had to re-check my luggages in HAK.

It was a hit and miss.

I took CSAir most and they always check my luggages through to final destination (as CAN/ZGGG got the facility to support this).

      • On a side note I find it very interesting that you've referred to CAN by it's ICAO name of ZGGG, but then called China Southern CSAir rather than CZ.

        • I meant CSAir = China Southern Airlines (also their website domain name - csair.com).

They wanted to have CS but Cambrian Airways called the dibs, even if that airline doesn't exist anymore.

CAN is indeed CZ's hub airport but technically they don't own the airport.

When travelling to China, it's all done automatically by them.

When travelling out of China through HAK it's incredible troublesome. You need to pick up your luggage, go out and recheck luggage again for international departure flight and need go through security screening / customs from scratch (long wait 30 mins - 1 hour).

I'm guessing they need to rescan your luggage to meet international flight requirements.

On another note the domestic departure Hainan airline lounge at HAK airport was really nice and has unlimited coconut drink, good lounge waiting environment and they can you out for your flight and they can cook basic Chinese meals for you which is nice.

The cheapo priority pass international lounges pretty mediocre.

      Hope this helps.

    • +1

yes, also they are using BOEING 737 max for connecting flight, did onve with them, NEVER again with BOEING 737 MAX!

    • Very late, but I'm taking a flight home tonight from Kunming to Sydney through Haikou with Hainan.

Ive been assured that it will checked through to Sydney for me.

  • Is this budget airline? How is it compared to others

          Then read the next one…

They don't seem to have any reviews. Are they based on actual customer experiences ?

        • +2

I put my actual customer experience below comments.

It's actually not good based on 4 flights with them. Inflight entertainment system is shit, outdated and was broken for all the flights I was in.

My advice is to avoid Hainan Airlines unless you don't mind the scoot level experience and long wait lines (for foreigners) at a low-tier airport facility. They had very little air bridges as well even for their own province airline so needed to use stairs / walk on tarmac.

          • +2

@Fat Horny Ghost: I’d say they’re actually worse than scoot, at least when I flew with scoot the plane was relatively clean and it was easy to transit Changi! Haikou is a nightmare.

            • +1

@sushifish: Agreed. I flew scoot once a long time ago to Singapore and never again. Very cramped and I don't recall if there was a media entertainment system. But don't remember the planes Scoot used was as old run down and dirty as Hainan Airlines.

        • +2

That's because they are paid to do ratings by the airlines.
          I'm sure it's very impartial.

  • +2

Hainan is a sister city to Oulu in Finland !!!

    • Sexist.

    • here i am thinking i am goind to the tahitian capital

  • +3

Shit slot, you will arrive Haikou at 3.30AM. Unfortunately the customs office is closed, and the airline counter is not open. No aircon, the humidity is high, and the perceived temperature is at least 30 to 40 degrees.

    • +1

Not making sense there… of course arrivals customs is open on arrival. Are you suggesting a whole plane load of passengers can't leave the airport on arrival.

      • You can leave, but if your destination is Beijing, you have to wait for customs to check your luggage.

    • -1

Actually no aircon at the airport?

      • +2

They turn off aircon during night although it's still warm.

      • No aircon at Haikou Meilan. It's pretty common in China for government buildings to be totally powered down, lights off as well. They struggle with power shortages.

  • +4

Personally would avoid Hainan Airlines. No idea how they got their 5 star rating. I'd consider it a 3-4 star similar level and almost similar level and experience with Scoot.

At this price it's cheap and no brainer if you don't mind scoot level flights and long transfers and wait lines in HAK. If you got Chinese passport you can go the faster que so not an issue wait lines from customs, exiting and transfers.

Arrived to Haikou last year. There is a terrible long line to get through customs and no transfer facilities to domestic (took us 1 hour to 90 mins just to get through customs) and then need to go out of the airport and back into domestic. Luggage all auto transferred.

Leaving through Haikou was terrible too. No transfer facilities. We had to pick up luggage from our domestic flight, essentially leave the airport and recheck back for international flight. 30 mins - 1 hour wait for security screening and customs.

My second advice is to avoid transferring HAK. It's cheap for a reason as it's like a third world country tier airport. Transfer through Singapore, Shanghai or Guangzhou which are top tier, quick and nicer. Guangzhou airport even gave some travel tourist vouchers including transportation for the longer layover (worth roughly about $150). But Changi Airport in Singapore is world class and has everything.

The only thing I liked was domestic departure lounge for Hainan Airlines (free with Priority pass).

The planes were old, run down and media remotes were not working in the extra legroom seats. Really needs a good update. We paid $180 each extra for HAK to SYD for extra legroom exit row seats.

Had issues with the remotes and headphones not working for the media entertainment system. Flight attendant only offered us downgrade to no extra legroom seats even though we paid extra.

I sent complaint to their customer service through afterwards. Received 1 follow up to say they looking into the matter and later found out they've blocked my email address when I tried to follow up my email.

China Eastern Airlines and China Southern Airlines were much better and avoided HAK. Media entertainment system was not as outdated but functioned. Service about the same.

    • +3

Personally would avoid Hainan Airlines. No idea how they got their 5 star rating.

Because they pay Skytrax to be 'rated'.

  • -3

Are they more comfortable than Cebu Pacific and Jetstar? Is there a cheap flight to/from the Philippines to go this way? Is it possible to transit on a Philippines passport? Can you get off in Haikou from Manila and transfer to Melbourne or Sydney instead of going to Beijing?

    • +4

omg, if you have this many questions you should go and see a travel agent.

  • +2

Flew Hainan last Dec, it's ok. Somewhat better than a budget airline but nothing amazing to say about it.

    • +5

A Chinese airline flying to China? No shit. If you don’t want to travel there, get out of the thread?

    • +2

Funny coming from someone calling themselves Kungfuman… im actually avoiding travel to the US for the same reason though, i dont need musk to have access to my data with his "special government official" pass from his mates at the White House.

Every time this deal comes up I’m going to repost my experience to warn others. There is no way this is a five star airline, they’re obviously paying off Skytrax or something. See below:

Just a warning to anyone thinking about taking Hainan airlines: I flew with them recently on one of these China deals and they were some of the worst flights I have ever experienced.

All four planes were absolutely filthy, I have no idea how they’re a supposed 5 star airline as there was grime baked into the remote controls for the TV, the seat material was stained and tray tables were sticky on every single flight. The food was also inedible, I love plane food usually but this was the equivalent of dog food.

However, this was only the beginning of the problems I experienced. Upon landing in Haikou although our bags were supposed to be transferred through to Beijing, Hainan managed to mix up the baggage from two separate flights, which meant everyone from our flight was put into a security holding area at 3am in the morning while they manually checked every single bag and called forth passengers one by one to open their bags. After two hours of this, Hainan staff realised that everyone with the connecting flight to Beijing were about to miss it so ended up letting everyone out of the holding area without half the bags being checked, pointless!

My return flight from Shanghai then got cancelled for “company reasons” and we were put on an earlier flight back to Haikou which meant cutting our holiday short. However, that flight was then delayed by 7 hours and Hainan offered nothing such as food or drink vouchers. Even when I’ve flown with Jetstar and Vietjetair they’ve given some airport vouchers for food when there’s been a delay (which has been quite often lol) but Hainan were not helpful at all.

When I asked about changing to another flight due to the cancellation of the first leg Hainan said they do not code share internationally and I would have to wait for four days if I wasn’t happy with the replacement flight as they only fly to Sydney on Saturdays and Tuesdays.

I absolutely love a good cheap flight but after my experience I would warn people against going with Hainan. It’s not worth putting up with the filthy planes, the disorganisation and the lack of assistance when something goes wrong.

The things that you are complaining about are the things people pay money to avoid. So basically, for a discount you run the gauntlet - sounds like a fair deal to me if 400 bucks to travel 18,000km is your definition of a deal. Its basically a regional budget airline, and you get regional budget airline amenities and service.

      • +6

If it is advertised as a "budget regional airline" then fair enough, but it is not - every time these posts come up there is an emphasis on it being a 5 star Skytrax airline, which is the same level as JAL and ANA, Singapore Airlines etc. I've flown JAL many times and to say that Hainan is on the same level is ridiculous. People may book these flights like I did thinking they were going to get a quality experience based on this rating when it was worse than many LCC's I've flown.

From the website "the 5-Star Airline Rating recognises those airlines providing very high standards of Airport and Onboard Product, together with consistent and high standards of staff service across both the airport and onboard service environments." This is not the case based on my experience and many other people's in this thread.

        • -1

Your problem is believing skytrax or TripAdvisor. Judge the deal on what you get, not the reviews.

          • +2

@FlyingMiffy: Ironically, the way anyone can get an idea of what they'll get (if they've not flown with an airline before) is from the reviews.

        • Agreed 100%.

The deal itself is amazingly cheap.

BUT you're cutting out the comforts that's falsely depicted via Skytrax.

Some are happy to deal with the 9 hour shitty flight and long wait lines check-in, security screen and customs in Haikou (for foreigners or 'aliens' as the US and Chinese customs signage like to term). Chinese citizens get to breeze through customs with their short prioritised lines.

      • +1

Paying less does not excuse failing the basics. Having clean and functional service is basic.

        • unfortunately, to many people, it does excuse failing the basics. that's why people still book them.

  • China in April, good idea?

  • -1

You probably have to peddle all the way to make the plane go….

    • you have to sell things to the crew?

  • what sort of visa do you need for china, can you do any visa on arrival?

    • +2

Australian citizens for purposes of business, tourism, visiting family and friends or transiting does not require visa if under 30 days. Very decent.

      • oh great, i always read there is an annoying procedure to get a tourist visa, but 30 days should be enough

        • +1

It used to be troublesome, needed to visit Chinese embassy to lodge and interview.

They introduced 15 days last year and now 30 days!

  • Just travelled back with this airline, the service is exceptional, we were provided with 2 meals, seats are comfy, they also provide eye mask, toothbrush and a towel.
