If you got wooly extra can get 10% off at big W

    • +5

thats worth paying the $7 for the one month

      • Surprised no one mentioned it but you don't actually need Everyday Extra to use the 10% off code @bloom @BargainsGrabber

        • I was fully aware of it - you just need to link your Woolies rewards card to your Big W account

          • @BargainsGrabber: Alright but the deal title and description implies it requires EE.

            • @MiscOzB: Gotcha, I followed past deals on the format for the title, should’ve made clearer in the description

        • Ok but there is no code being shared every month. If people know the code then no point joining Every day extra

    • +1

Thought Apple products are in the exclusion list for Everyday Extra? So it works on iPads?

      • +1

While it’s listed in the exclusion list, the code works
        Dunno why tho

        • I don't know why you got downvoted. But when I tried earlier, I could add apply the code too.

    • Staxk it with discounted GC

  • Can you download new apps onto these???

    • +9

Now, yes. Future, yes, until you can’t.

      • -6

Serious question, for how many years?

I remember the free iPad I got for signing up to a certain uni. It became junk basically after a few years because I couldn't access the app store because it was deemed "too old" by apple.

        • +2

Hard to say. Apple have been really good supporting iPads in recent times. However, this is now discontinued and it’s the last iPad with a home button and the last iPhone with a home button is rumoured to replaced early next year with one without a home button as well.

Wouldn’t surprise me if Apple is keen to stop having to customise their OS for the few devices that still have a home button.

With that said, these are popular as education devices and Apple might know parents expect the devices to last many years.

          tldr: no one really knows.

        • +1

8 years not enough for you? Go Anroid with 2 year support then

          • -5

@Freestyle: With Android, you can at least access the Play Store and download apps, most which support older versions. Google doesn't lock the whole store down.

And I got far less than 8 years, felt more like 2 after receiving it.

Also it's 5 to 7 years, not 8. https://discussions.apple.com/thread/255597793 … meaning this device will be supported up to 2028 if lucky.

        • +5

Just to clarify, no iPad has ever been blocked from accessing the App Store and never will be.. it’s the specific app you might be downloading that has a minimum IOS version to download.

          • -6

@Slo20: No, to clarify it was unable to open the App Store specifically due to the iOS version, which is the crux of the problem… Like at least give consumers the chance to access it.

Also the case with my iPod

            • +4

@smartProverble: What iPad was that? I have an iPad 2 released 13 years ago and can still access the App Store

              • -6

@Slo20: I have an iPad Air (A1474 so 2013/2014) and can't access App Store, can't sign into Apple ID or anything as it's "too old". Works perfectly fine but it's a brick that sits in my cupboard waiting to be thrown into landfill.

                • +3

@brightside: This is simply not true. Apple does not "lock down" or prevent old devices from accessing the App Store. Perhaps you should get help from someone who understands technology instead of spreading lies on a forum.

                  • -1

                    @Karfaffel: Lol.
So I looked into this a bit more after reading your insightful comment. The message I get when trying to sign in to Apple ID is "Cannot Use Your Apple ID on This Device. Your Apple ID can only be used on devices with iOS xx.x or later……This iPad cannot be updated to the latest software"
Did a bit more of a search and found this Apple community post which states that it can actually work, you need to disable things on your Apple ID like Account Recovery and Security Keys.
Technically yes, I could use Apple ID again on this device, but it's at a compromise to all my other devices. I never said that the device is locked down. I said that I can't sign into Apple ID. Which, if I want to keep using newer security features, I am unable to do.

                    Source: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/254967955?sortBy=rank

P.S. No need to be a condescending prick. It's Ozbargain. Go back to FB with that attitude

                    • +7

@brightside: I'm so glad my post irritated you as it provoked you to post something that's actually useful.

It would seem that the problem is related to newer security methods that are not supported on older versions of iOS. You have chosen not to use a way around that and would rather keep your iPad in the cupboard waiting to be thrown into landfill (which is likely against your local council regulations as it is e-waste).

        • Typically iPads have had beyond amazing usage times…. Even without app store being updated through new os updates, they'll still be able to download previous things for a long time.

Like others have said, 6 to 8 years? Very good.

    • +3

Is you have any space left

  • +2

I've got the 6th gen and it's so goddamn slow now, I even did a full factory reset still shit

    • +2

it is getting old but also check battery health - if it's under 80 or is having unexpected shut down or gets too hot etc, apple will throttle performance to extend its life

      • +2

        to extend its life

Nah, they do it to force you to buy the newer models.

Does it make sense to make your device uselessly slow, to extend its life?

        • +6

Nah, they do it to force you to buy the newer models.

This nonsense keeps getting posted after all these years.

Does it make sense to make your device uselessly slow, to extend its life?

Nothing to do with extending its life. As batteries get old they can’t output enough power. So your options are have device that randomly shutsdown or one that sacrifices performance to prevent shutdowns.

As someone who had a Nexus 6 that didn’t “get slower” as the battery aged and instead would randomly shutdown and not have enough juice to turn back on leaving me stranded without a phone, I’ll happily take a slower phone over a fast unreliable one.

Also developers write apps with consideration for the specs the majority of their users have. If you have an ancient device, the developers’ of the apps aren’t concerned that the fancy new animations they’ve added to newer versions of their apps don’t run smoothly on devices used by 5% of their users. So the device might not actually be running slower, it just can’t keep up with modern requirements.

          • -7

@PainToad: It was actually proven in court and Apple were fined for slowing down their products. If you think they don't still do it you're dreaming. The fines meant nothing to them.

            • +2

@Farticus: Yeah but after the court ruling, they tell you they do it and have an option to disable it. You get a message when it unexpectedly shuts down.

            • @Farticus:

It was actually proven in court and Apple were fined for slowing down their products.

As I said, they slow down their products to keep them reliable. Try actually reading my previous post.

If you think they don't still do it you're dreaming.

I never said they didn’t. I said I’m glad they do. Again, try reading.

          • -4

@PainToad: Apple marketing worked on you ;) Would you like 1/2 useful (painfully slow) device for 6 months or OK for 3 months & after it starts random shutdowns you decide if you want to use it +3 months or update the battery. The Apple excuse is to suffer longer & then you "angrily" buy new product(s) in 3 months anyway (the extra slow 3 months would be too much to continue the torture ;)

On Samsung, there's max batt save option that reduces the functionality to prolong the batter when you don't have charger for longer - IT'S your option, not Apple's :(

            • @taki:

Would you like 1/2 useful (painfully slow) device for 6 months or OK for 3 months & after it starts random shutdowns

I’ll take a phone that’s slower but doesn’t randomly shutdown (potentially leaving me stranded or unable to call Triple Zero) for an additional three months giving me extra time to get the battery replaced.

I value my safety more than my phone’s speed.

On Samsung, there's max batt save option that reduces the functionality to prolong the batter when you don't have charger for longer

              Cool story. So does iOS.

    • -1

My old (now wife's) Galaxy Note 10+ is 1 year younger but running great (more functionality than iPad, >300 apps on it + S-pen & DeX windows like experience ;)
I don't think it's the battery but Apple obsolescence to forces you to $pend again :(

    • That's Apples built in obsolescence.

      • +1

        No, that’s technology.

        • -6

And that's you unable to think objectively.

It's amusing trying to decide whether people are paid or just indoctrinated.

          You most likely are indoctrinated.

          • +3

            @ichoosethesteak:

And that's you unable to think objectively.

            Objectively:
            1) Batteries age. They can no longer power devices as reliably at full performance.
            2) The specs of the current average device gets better as technology progresses. So developers progressively increase the requirements of their code. Older devices struggle to run modern code and performance suffers. Same as a top of the line gaming PC from 2014 could in theory execute a modern game, but it won’t run that game as well as a game released in 2014.

            You most likely are indoctrinated.

Oh my. Everything is a big conspiracy, right? Everyone besides you are sheep with their eyes closed, right? You’re so much more enlighten than everyone else, right? 🙄

            • -4

@PainToad: The company that has been caught red handed using its massive market dominance in multitudes of ways is definitely telling the truth this time.

I can see in the future you arguing with the bank about giving money to a scammer because they don't know them like you do.

              • +2

@ichoosethesteak: You don’t need to rely on them to be telling the truth. It’s common sense.

                Batteries age, their output decreases.

Technology progresses, the demand software places on aging hardware increases.

                These are facts.

                • -2

@PainToad: One of the saddest lessons of history is this: If we've been bamboozled long enough, we tend to reject any evidence of the bamboozle. We're no longer interested in finding out the truth. The bamboozle has captured us. It's simply too painful to acknowledge, even to ourselves, that we've been taken.

@PainToad: I share a quote from arguably the greatest scientist of the 20th century and then provide real world evidence contradicting your point and you go straight to strawman.

For entertainment, I bet you won't tell me how many shots you ended up getting or at least be truthful about it. Given this is ozbargain, did you at least get your free donut lol

provide real world evidence contradicting your point

You literally have not retorted a single actual argument. You just keep going around in circles with vague cliches about “challenging everything”, “indoctrinated” etc. It’s like reading a Sovereign Citizens rant.

I bet you won't tell me how many shots you ended up getting or at least be truthful about it.

I’ve gotten every booster when they became available for my age group. I will get the next one too next year with my yearly flu shot. So, I was right, you are an anti-vaxer?

                        • -5

@PainToad: I did present evidence, I presented 4 x samples where I showed that I never had to change the battery and it never turned off by itself and its a 5 and a half year old phone. Sure, the battery wasn't as good as it was but they would still last a full day. In fact, I had to use my old one the other week as my new phone had a settings issue I needed to fix.

Serious question, have you really had 8 or 9 covid shots now?

                        • -2

@PainToad: Carl Sagan was the best, no wonder you didn't reply.

  • +15

Personally, given how long people tend to keep these, I'd get the 10th gen for the Type C/newer design even if it's closer to the low/mid 500 mark.

Still a decent price though! Especially if you more plan to give it to ya kids/as a basic device.

    • +2

Agree the 10th gen is great value, nice new design etc

    • +1

End of the day is A13 Bionic Chip vs A14 chip in the 10th does it offer that much more for extra $200? Might be slightly fast, durability wise prob same. Unless ur keen on the new design, its not heap of an upgrade.. the 10th gen would be just as "basic" as the 9th gen would have been a year 2 before it..

      • +7

I'd pay a premium to ditch Lightning cables personally lol.

        • +3

I did. Also did the same last time I bought an iPhone. Bizarre that changing a cable can bring so much relative satisfaction! I won't buy another device that has lighting or micro USB.

…of course at some point there will be a replacement for USB2 cables, but that's far enough away that I can happily remain on old-tech when that happens!

          • @braddsey: Absolutely! Also makes any type of travel much easier to manage with just a couple of the same type of cable/charger at most, not fumbling with those random cables you need for just 1 device that's older than the others etc.

        • And still, iPhone addicts were defending (struggling with) Lightning for 7 years after Samsung et. al introduced it ;)

          • +1

@taki: No addiction, no defending, no struggling here!

Honestly couldn't care less what phone someone uses - they ultimately all do the same thing.
I was happy using lightning when it was all that was available in my chosen devices. Never once had an argument with anyone about what cable I stuck into my device. Now appreciating the convenience of USB2 that plugs into my apple and non-apple products. Still using micro-USB for those devices that have it.

            Have a good day. :)

      • does it offer that much more for extra $200?

        https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/854993
        It's actually only $130 extra.

    • +1

Usb C plug alone on 10th gen is worth it alone. I hate dealing with Apple proprietary lightning plugs and chargers

      Its unnecessary and generates e-waste

The fact that lots of people also buy third party cables MFI certified, a lot of charging cables are Chinese made. Poor QA cheap products everywhere which are poor quality and fails miserably

Its a waste of everybody's time

    • I'd like to point out it's not all positive - you lose the stereo jack for cheap headphones in 10th gen.

  • +2

I'm in the US at the moment and this is $200 USD at target. So I'd say it's an OK deal, but could be better.

    https://www.target.com/p/apple-ipad-10-2-inch-wi-fi-64gb-202…

    • +6

Note that price doesn't include local US taxes, which playing around with some area codes seems to add $18-$30 to the base price.

Convert to AUD, and it floats around $320-$340. So it is cheaper, but not enormous, especially with the Big W 10% off.

      • +2

Yes that's true, in California the price goes up to $223 ($329 AUD).

  • How do I get Everyday Extra?

    • +1
    • +1

You don't actually need Everyday Extra to use the 10% off code.

      • Do we have an Ozbargain thread what is the month 10% code then?

        • It’s quite obvious to deduce what the next month code is

Replace the Aug with the next month’s first 3 letters

So in September, the code should be XSEP2024

  • How to use extra 10% online? For the grocery shopping, I cannot find the 10% discount applied to my cart when I proceed to check out.

    • +1

OP has posted the ER Extra code.

Anyway, if you have the Rewards app, it's in Extra tab.. then scroll down until you see Big W.

      • Okay. Understood.

  • what is that round recess thing at lower edge of the screen?

  • +2

Got it down to $365.69 with the %3 off gift cards in the rewards app, plus 6 X bonus points so essentially another $10 off.
Just did a custom amount for BigW gift card for $377 and paid the extra 10c on card.
Rewards extra was free for 30 days.

    • Got it for around that through amazon last year. Was $382.90 minus paying with GC discounts and all the bonus $ when buying GC's.

  • This iPad was discontinued in May.

    • +2

For the price who cares. Used 9th gen iPad seem to be going at a similar price, so why not buy a new one.

  • Officeworks don’t price match codes!!

    • I got mine from Officeworks for $398 several weeks back. Not a bad option if you don't want to sign up to Everyday Extra & want to get one immediately.

  • +3

With the 5% Seniors Card, gets it down to $358 and change. I reckon that is a good deal, thanks OP

  • +1

Ended up getting mine for $398 from Officeworks three ago, after they price beat Big W. Not as cheap as this deal, but still pretty impressive for a retail store without waiting for delivery. It's a massive upgrade over my 5th Gen iPad from 2017, as it was getting painfully slow. For my needs (watching YouTube Video, some very light gaming & internet browsing) it's more than capable. I'm not going to be editing 4k video, doing graphics design or using it as a laptop replacement.

    Ideally I wouldn't spend more than $400 on a 9th Gen iPad.

  • +1

thanks! used nrma blue for 5% off bigw GCs

  • +1

Oh man, i've been holding out for the 10th Gen price drop, but 9th Gen at this price is really tempting.

    • This time next year 10th gen might be this price. What will you say then?

      • +1

Well depends if I’ve acquired an iPad by then.

I’m in no rush to purchase one. It’s a luxury buy, so I can afford to hold out until it’s a price I’m comfortable with paying.

  • This or the pixel tablet? Just for generic use, web browsing, podcasts, videos, music, etc.

      Apple iPad 9th Gen 64GB Wi-Fi $419 (Exp: $377.10 with Everyday Extra) Posted @ BIG W ($398.05 PB @ Officeworks)

No, this has been expired since 3 hours ago

      • Mark it expired then?

        • +1

My position is that the deal should not be marked as expired, because:

          • The $419 price in the first version of this deal is still applicable.
          • The revisions for this deal have listed both the $419 price and the lower price using the 10% off coupon code.

If I marked the deal as expired, I would be saying both the $419 price and the lower price are no longer available.

My position is that the coupon code should be deleted from the coupon code field, plus a note should be included in the description saying the 10% off coupon code previously listed in the deal no longer works on this product. I think the deal title is fine as it is.

I raised a report with the moderators for one of them to make a final decision, because this situation is going beyond the type of situations I should be handling…

          • +2

@WookieMonster: Thanks Wookie, I’ve fixed the description to better reflect these comments about people complaining I should mark the deal as expired (even though only the component of the Everyday Rewards is only expired)
