Sea Monkeys are an awesome pet and great for kids to learn about the cycle of life.

Just please don't give the wrist aquarium to a small kid - I can't imagine the poor Sea Monkeys will enjoy being shook all over the place by a restless young'un (anyone remember 'Finding Nemo'?)

  • How long do they live for anyway?
I always wanted some as a kid.

    • Apparent 2 weeks to a month. See here, here and here.

I just looked it up for my curiosity. I remember seeing ads for them in comic books. Bet a lot of kids were disappointed when they looked nothing like monkeys.

      • To be honest, I actually never knew what they actually were till I wikipedia'd it.
Never actually seen them. Only ever saw the advertising posters/packaging.

I had a sea monkey aquarium. There was a packet with a heap of eggs. Feeding them regularly, giving them heaps of air (I'd bubble the tank once or twice a day rather than once or twice a week), occasionally giving them the cupid's powder (said to contain a few more eggs), the herd of them lasted nearly a year.

At that point I got a new packet of eggs on warranty. (Warranty is 1 year for the herd or whatever the word is)

Note: Discussing it with a friend at the time, she thinks maybe if I'd used distilled water, the monkeys could have made it out to or past the entire year.

Tip 1: It says in the instructions at the start, hold the tank with the mixture near the water and see if you can see the little sea monkeys. That's a semi-trick. They want you to hold them up so you can get some sunlight on them to start the process off. If you don't, it may take a lot longer if ever.

Tip 2: To find hatchlings, which are smaller than a pin head and definitely smaller than bubbles you'll find in the initial sea monkey mix, try sitting still and looking for a miniscule black dot here or there, that kind of hops/ticks around in a circular pattern. Other debris will tend not to move in a path like that.

If Monkeys are like humans that means some humans would probably have the same brain capacity as Sea Monkeys. :P

    Isn't that animal cruelty ?

    • -1

If you feed them they probably live longer than out in the wild with predators around.

    • chucking them in the watch would be considered animal cruelty… because of the confined space and rapid vibrations that would occur from movement…

but these "seamonkeys" are used as live food for pet fish…

Aren't Sea Monkeys merely Brine Shrimps which you can get at fish aquarium shops as live food for the fishes?

    • Seems you're right (stated at top):

    • Yep! You beat me to it. :)

    • Are the ones you get as food still alive though?
Also how much are they in comparison?

Usually only a few dollars. You can get live or freeze dried from most pet shops that specialise in fish. It is quite possible to breed them if you so desire, you'll find plenty of info through google.
