It's been a while since I've shared a more budget brand Android tablet and this time it's Teclast's latest tablet (released Monday). This one is using the new Unisoc T620 CPU that's a beefed up T618 with the same GPU as a MediaTek Helio G99 found in more mid-range budget Android tablets. Paired with the 11" 90Hz refresh rate screen and Widevine L1 DRM with Netflix HD this is pretty good for general usage, media playback and light gaming.

Featrures include Android 14 with Google Play, 11" 90Hz 1920x1200 display with 400nits brightness, 6GB RAM (+10GB Virtual Expansion), 256GB UFS 3.0 storage (microSD support), 8000mAh battery with USB-C, 18W PD fast charging, 4G LTE with Dual SIM, 13MP rear camera, 8MP front camera, WiFi ac, GPS, Bluetooth 5.0, dual speakers, dual mics, 3.5mm audio jack and weighs 520g.

Has Android 14 before the majority of Motorola's phones lulllzz

Awks. My 30 Ultra received the update about 6 months ago.

      • Lucky duckling. My Edge 40 still hasn't got it, hence why it's being sold. Bought Poco F6 and never looked back.

      • Almost everything these days malware. It just your choose to view it more as selling data than slowing the device. How many "smart tvs" get returned to JBHIFI because it start to lag from internal apps. Norton is often considered malware since it throttles a lot of computers after a while.

There's a difference between buying from brand products (i.e. Teclast) and generic Android tablets like this fake ass "Xioami" tablet with specs far too good be to true for US$70ish.

Now if you actually read your link properly it talks about the generic Android TV boxes you see over AliExpress and elsewhere that use the phone version of Android, as opposed to the proper Android TV found on your smart TVs and Chromecast. The very short version is that these factories were using the same dodgy malware loaded ROM on hundreds of "different" models.

I mean even if you do consider Teclast to be trustworthy, there’s still no guarantee that this seller hasn’t installed an app prior to shipping or even installed a fw with an added back door.

I’d only trust a Lenovo from AliExpress because you can download the fw from Lenovo directly and flash it yourself, wiping anything the third party seller might have added.

          • +8

@PainToad: This seller being Teclast themselves. Considering Teclast are Maxsun I don't think they'd be keen on destroying their brand domestically and internationally by loading malware.

Even if they did it can be detected.

If we were to say Lenovo were adding backdoor's to their ROMs this would just reload the backdoor. After all Lenovo RSA is pulling the firmware from Lenovo's servers and it can be tampered at their end.

Instead you'd need to go compile your own AOSP ROM or similar for the tablet.

Yeah, if the manufacturer is adding backdoors obviously reflashing the firmware isn’t going to solve this. My point is you’re removing one level of risk by not trusting the seller to not have added something.

              Teclast are Maxsun

I’ll have to believe you when you say “Maxsun” is trust worthy.

          • @PainToad:

            I'd only trust a Lenovo

Maybe go read up on Superfish, or the phones they shipped with malware

            • @freefall101: Glad I ended up paying a bit more last year and sticking with Apple and getting another iPad.

Written by someone who truly does not know the landscape.

  • how is this in terms of speed? As mentioned earlier, looking for something under 12" and I have got xiaoxin pro pad 12.7" its too big for my use and have to buy a separate pen worth $80-90 and can't use generic pen with that.

    • Not sure about the latest tablets and pens, but I got a Lenovo Precision Pen 2 when Lenovo does their sales and it works with my Xiaoxin Pro 2021 and Microsoft Surfaces just fine.

Mate got a cheapie universal "pencil" off ali (no bluetooth just battery) and it somehow works with my Lenovo as well.

      • I did my search and with 12.7 snapdragon 2023 model, only precision pen 3 is compatible.

How's the general experience with Teclast? Bought various brands over the years, have either worked for a decent amount of time or just become outdated except for the one Teclast I got which, well, didn't last very long at all. I just got unlucky?

Replying off a telcast. Been fine for use 4/5 times a week for over a year.

    • +2

I have a Telcast tablet using Android 12 that I purchased about 8 months ago and have been using it everyday since without any issues , nice and snappy in performance , battery lasts a long time , has been well worth it for me , the only downside is you don't get any Android updates so mine is stuck at 12 but I will just purchase another one when I feel it's needed for the Android upgrade.

    • +1

I bought a Teclast last year that only lasted a few weeks before it stopped charging. Unlucky? There's a few stories like mine so caveat emptor

      • Thats bad. I just ordered one, after your comments I cancelled my order. I probably get Xiaoxin 2024 11" which is only 170.

        • +2

Make sure you get a CN ROM and not a fake global ROM with an unlocked bootloader.

  • +2

I had one years ago, didnt get a lot of use before it stopped charging due to the port failing internally. Id say its quite likely due to poor quality manufacturing. The tablet itself though was quite good. I need a new one and not sure if i want to make the same mistake again.

    • Get one of the Lenovo's instead

      • Yeah not in a hurry. Its really going to be jsed as a plex player in the car for my kid so i dont need to spend big money :)

    • +2

Someone a while ago suggested using a magnetic cable with tablets. Leave the USB-C connector in the tablet all the time. It's not a bad idea.

      • +1

Yeah maybe. But that said i plugged my s23 in every day for 2 years and it hasn't had any issues. Maybe just better quality parts lol

  • +1

This looks pretty good. Is there something that costs a little bit more and worth an extra $50/100?

Maybe with a Snapdragon or more RAM?

    • If you're willing to spend an extra $30ish get the Lenovo Xiaoxin Pad Pro 12.7 2023 instead.

        Around $200.

        This looks good too!

I've narrowed it down to this and the Teclast T50 Plus.

Any idea how the helio g99 compares to the unisoc t620? Can't find much info on the 620

          • @auskeek: Not much information. Looks like it just came out.

            https://www.unisoc.com/en_us/home/TZNSJ-T620-1

          • +4

@auskeek: T620 is a brand new release. The G99 has a faster CPU than the T620 but an identical GPU. The Snapdragon 870 in the Lenovo beats both. Basically the A75/A76/A77 are the performance cores, while the A55 are the efficiency cores.

            MediaTek Helio G99

            • 2x 2.2 GHz – Cortex-A76
            • 6x 2 GHz – Cortex-A55

            Unisoc T620

            • 2x 2.2 GHz – Cortex-A75
            • 6x 1.8 GHz – Cortex-A55

            Qualcomm Snapdragon 870

            • 1x 3.2 GHz – Kryo 585 Prime (Cortex-A77)
            • 3x 2.42 GHz – Kryo 585 Gold (Cortex-A77)
            • 4x 1.8 GHz – Kryo 585 Silver (Cortex-A55)

I didn't share the iPlay 50 Pro due to not having Widevine L1 DRM and this deal was posted in response to this request.

  • wifey wants something for netflix, youtube and stuff like wordle. this should be good yeah?
