MINISFORUM is having a deal on its Neptune HX99G Mini PC. I'm quite interested in Mini PCs and this one is actually a gaming PC with AMD Radeon RX and 8GB GDDR6 memory.

The deal is in two parts:
1. The regular price has dropped temporarily from $1599.99 to $1279.99
2. Then, in true OzBargain style, you can get an extra $4.99 off via the promo code EGSIC7SB
This makes it $1275 in total. The deal(s) end on 30 August 2024.

This one comes with a GPU though so it'll probably run games 2-3x faster

  • Do people generally wipe and reinstall Windows from scratch for these mini PCs to be safe? Are there any risks of doing this (Windows not being registered anymore, or losing specific drivers for the PC, etc)?

    • +12

Malware can exist in bootstrap firmware or OEM drivers - reinstalling Windows won’t help. Online safety begins with your choice of a hardware vendor.

if worried about security i'd stay away from these mini pc's

BIOS/Firmware level backdoors/exploits cannot be removed by full format/install windows

this is like ASIO level of security i'm wary but honestly shouldn't be bothered by it

fresh install of windows is better than nothing, windows license is stored on BIOS so skip the product key on install just make sure to use same tier Home/Pro etc…

windows update picks up most drivers, if anything missing check device manager and lookup Hardware ID of missing drivers

    • Thanks guys

  • How would this go for a lounge gaming PC?

What kind of games do you intend to play?

Why do you ask irrelevant questions? /s

If you have a 4K TV, it's going to be pretty mediocre, unless you're playing lightweight games or are fine with playing in 1080p.

I'd wait for a sale on an ITX gaming rig, otherwise there are mATX rigs for under $1500 with a 4070 that would smash this for gaming.

Spend the $1275 with one of the Techfast deals that are regularly posted here and you'll get way way more power for your money - choose one with an innocuous case that you can fit into your lounge and voila.

    • What everyone else said. Unless you're really sold on the form factor, buying or building something larger is going to give you much more bang for your buck.

Someone posted some PC deals yesterday that came in a Dan A3. Nice small case that would go well in a TV unit and can take powerful modern hardware.

Specs in case anyone else is wondering about the mystery GPU…

  • Wish this had Oculink even with the decent GPU

  • I'd say that the HX99G has been at this price so long that its no longer a special. I was monitoring it for a while until the 200G/Atomman was released and there was one dip down to $1149 for the 1TB 32GB version for a day otherwise it has sat at this price for months.

I wanted the sff and pre-built so was interested in this but ultimately went with the Atomman G7 PT. Marginal benefit for an extra $750AUD but I don't upgrade often.
