240

Just saw on JB hifi website not sure if its a good deal for Pixel 9

On $79 per month plan for 24 months get $1000 off on 128/256 GB Pixel9

There is also $250 gift card if purchased phone by today

Total cost comes to $976 less $250 gift card = $726

Phone cost(128gb) less 1000 = 347
Cancellation fees for $79 plan = 527 ($550 max repayment fees - $22.9 for 1 month)
First Month fees $79

Is this good deal for Pixel 9 or there any better deals?

        I'm confused, what's the math

        • +3

OP’s right - this has been a long running loophole. The final invoice for cancellation is $550

          • @BargainsGrabber: Is this still valid? I walked into JB and was told on cancellation I have to pay the full cost of the phone. TIA

There are 15 pages of this discussion on the Pixel 9 Pro XL deal

Getting exhausted seeing the same comment over and over

Can only do what you can. Some people will miss out if they don't do enough research

        • +2

Or they can't comprehend there's free money to be had

        • I get 4 negs for telling others about how I was being helpful on the other thread lol

  • +5

    Don't think it's a good deal

    • +1

Its Telstra. There are never good deals from them. :p

  • +1

This would have been semi decent if it was the standard pro version.

  • +1

Was 1700 off with 99 cap. JB is being funny with all those prom by keeping changing it super often. Maybe because there is no rivals

    • It was for the Pixel 9 Pro XL version though.

  • +2

This is free in HN with $69 plan

    • +3

      please share the link

    • Are you referring to this ?

      Optus

      • Yes

        • but it says gift card not phone?

          • +1

            @softkun123: Here @pman54
            https://www.harveynorman.com.au/optus-byo

Customers who sign up to a new Gift Card Voice Plan $69 SIM only plan in store at Harvey Norman, Domayne or Joyce Mayne during the offer period may at point-of-sale purchase a Google Pixel 9 128GB device: (a) with a $1349 discount applied upfront to the cost of the device; and (b) receive a $250 Harvey Norman, Domayne or Joyce Mayne Gift Card.

Cancellation fee: within 120 days $1328, after 120 days $690

  • +7

So, pixel 9 for $1347- $1000= $347 upfront payment plus $550 pro rata cancellation plus $79 first month fees. And a $250 gift card.

    So looking at $347 +$527 +$79 -$250= $703 approx.

Still pretty good deal ATM if you missed the pre order deal.

    • +1

What was the preorder deal you speak of?

      • +1

It was on Pixel pro XL only.

    • -4

Plus, the proceeds from selling the pixel on the secondhand market

      • I'm all for it if you want to get a cheaper phone for yourself or a family member. But not taking advantage of a loophole for profit.

        • -2

          Why bother with ozbargain?

    • +2

So, if I understood it correctly, the deal is 953 aud for a Google pixel 9 128GB and a 250aud gift card?

  • +1

Does signing up and cancelling, have any effects on ones credit rating?

    • +2

Only if you don't pay what's owing on the final invoice.
Also your credit report can look "busy" if you are signing up for multiple services too often, which may not look good to some lenders (can make you look higher risk). That's up to the lenders own criteria what they deem is higher risk. But you won't have a default against your name if you pay all outstanding money owed, which I think might be what you are referring to.

      • So signing up would make an entry on my credit report? My credit report has been empty for over 7 years and hoping not to have anything that might effect it.

        • Yes, you'll be listed as credit checked for applying for credit. If your credit file has zero activity for the last 7 years this is the last thing you need to worry about.

        • Your credit rating is almost meaningless unless its bad, and if its bad the negative events that caused the bad score are what you need to worry about as opposed to trying to game the score itself.

Just saw jb ads say $1200 off for XL on $79plan

  • -1

For those who want to cancel before the plan is finished can't you stay on the plan for 6-7months and then pay nothing? Its free (real estate) phone data for like 6 months right?

    • +3

If you define $79/month as "free", sure.

      • Well if we are forced to pay the $550 pro rata cancellation to get out first month then staying for 6-7 months while I wait for a nice 12 month prepaid plan seems the way to go.
I wonder if jbhifi guys will let you use the $250 gift card against the phones price at purchase, lol probably not
Also probably could shove the simcard from the "new plan" in my old phone if I just decided to sell off pixel early

        • +3

          No.

The Voucher Repayment Fee (if applicable) is pro-rated, equal to the total amount of the base voucher divided by 24 and multiplied by months (or part months) remaining in your plan term.

          So you'd pay $79/month and then still have a payout of $550/24 × (24 - 7 months) = $389 payout after 7 months

          • @ESEMCE: Good to know, thanks

            • -1

@MilkDrinker: Had a look into the Upfront mobile plans details, noticed this on the regular $79 plan
"The $700 JB Hi-Fi Gift Card will replace the value of the Voucher stated in the Critical Information Summary."

So if you do go to jb hifi today, your $1000 voucher may replace the value of $550 in the initial data, meaning OPs fees will be way out, make sure to check the contract just in case

Still a decent deal otherwise if you are happy to stay on plan.

              • -1

                @MilkDrinker: Nope.
                Keep reading the CIS

                • @ESEMCE: If Telstra didn’t update their cis to change the voucher value to 1000, that’s on them due to the rules of the contract.
If the cis gets updated to the 79 plan addendum then that’s on any ozbargainers, that’s all I’m saying.
Anyway 250 voucher is gone now. Rip.

but 128 gigs? seems excessive don't ya think?

  • Are these phones out atm?

    • +1

Pixel 9 and Pixel 9 Pro XL are out, Pixel 9 Pro Fold coming in September, Pixel 9 Pro in October.

  • Looking up the Pixel 9 vs Pro camera's - I can't see any differences other than the Zoom levels (optical + AI smoothing) and an extra service where you upload your footage and it turns it into 8k footage?

    Anybody else confirm?

    • Hardware differences of Pro vs non pro are;
      - an additional 5x telephoto lens/sensor (ie 3 cameras vs 2),
      - more RAM (16Gb vs 12Gb) and
      - a LTPO OLED screen (Brighter and Always on capable)

But yeah, otherwise they're very similar.

I'm hanging out for the 9 Pro. Cause I value the Telephoto.

      • the pro includes a much better selfie camera and a higher screen resolution as well

  • What happens if you get the plan and return the phone? Do you get the $1,000 phone credit back as a gift card?
Last I recall doing one of these deals they put the phone discount onto a gift card, then used that to pay for a portion of the phone.

  • I’d say directly this compares to S24, so see the all time low without trade-in on that model for price reference.

  • +1

Ended up grabbing one today - Got the Pixel 9 256GB (non pro) - hopefully made the right choice. Thanks OP

    For anybody wondering

    Figures are;
    $497 for the phone
$79.00 for first month (comes out during sign up)
    $526.93 for contract cancel

    $1102.93 total cost for Pixel 9 256GB

    • +2

Did you manage to get the $250 voucher?

      • +1

Yes I got the $250 voucher.

        • So it's 1102 - 250 = $852 ~

          • @GeneralKeen: Well its $1102 out of your pocket.

$250 gift card is OK if you were going to spend $250 anyway….otherwise its maybe worth $200-$220 to resell.

    • What's next? I am thinking of doing the same thing.
According to the CIS, "When you cancel, your service will be disconnected immediately." So, do we have to port our number to other provider before cancelling or after cancelling? How does it work?

      • +1

If you're cancelling immediately, just get a new number (don't port across your number).

      • +1

Just get a new number when you open the plan?
