Not much differene between the 3 and the 4 version really.

    • +1

Why the neg when it's true?

      • +8

There are many fragile users on Ozb. Just ignore those NPCs.

And you're right, I would buy the 3 over the 4 anytime when it's much cheaper.

      • +8

Because the 'small' differences can be massive in use, depending on the user.

The two big ones being a smaller sensor (worse low light), but more importantly, no gyro data is recorded.

So if you want 'real' 4k footage to work with, you have no way to stabilise it. You can use rocksteady and accept the sensor crop of about 3k, software stretched Into a 4k resolution, or disable rocksteady and have shakey footage.

On the v2 and v4 you can disable rocksteady, which will store gyro data, allowong you to capture full 4k, and decide exactly how much crop (or opt for stretch or blur) that you need.

The 3 is an amazing camera; but the 2 differences are big for a decent chunk of users.

      • FPV flight footage needs stabilization in post production, which would require gyro data when being stabilized in Gyroflow, which has far better outcome than the crop then stretched export from the action cam.

  • Whats the battery life on these things, also how does it compare with a gopro hero 12?

    • -1

This is better than Go Pro, as Go Pros get to overheat

    • 160mins at 1080. Presumably less with higher res and more options.

    • I get about 90 minutes on 4K60.

  • +1

main issue is file size, only use it for 1080p recording and 10 mins vid is already around 1gb.

    • +6

      That sounds about right.

    • Storage is getting cheaper all the time

      • Last week I bought a 256Gb Sandsik Extreme Pro V30 on Amazon for $45 delivered - which I think is pretty good. It holds about 360-380 minutes of OA3 4K60.

    • +1

Someone said there was something odd about the files being broken into 4gb files. Is that true and does it make editing harder?

      • +1

SD cards 32GB and smaller are formatted as FAT32, which has a maximum file size of 4GB. So if your device generates more data than 4GB, it must be split into 4GB files.

SD cards with higher capacity than 32GB are formatted as EXFAT, and the largest file size on EXFAT is so large you'll never have to worry about it.

        • Appreciate the explanation, thanks!

          • +1

@danmc64: Note that using an SD card larger than 32GB doesn't guarantee that files won't be split into 4GB chunks, it's possible there may be some devices with poorly-written firmware that splits recordings into 4GB chunks irrespective of how the card is formatted.

I'd expect that name-brands like DJI and GoPro have proper firmware, but I don't own any to confirm.

        • +3

AFAIK that doesn't apply with DJI - the files are still split into 4Gb files, even with a large 256Gb card.

      • +2

Both my GoPro and my dji split my files regardless of the fact I am used a 512gb sd card in them. Annoying thing for me with go pro is the way it changes the file name by inserting a 2 in the middle of the filename (the way it numbers it) so basically if you have multiple recordings on your device then playback on your PC is annoying as it first play backs all the files with 1s before it moves onto the 2s. A bit tricky to explain. At least DJI doesn't do this for me. It just continues to the next no.

    • 130mbit/s is why, slightly more than what you get with a GoPro

    • Not too big. Thats 85 hours on a $45 512gb card.

    • +1

Is it not using Hvec why it's the file so big?

  • +3

Haha "ATL", everyday you learn new abbreviation - you are an OzBargain legend.

Such a good price by the way, I'm tempted to buy it since I've just sold by GoPro Hero 5.

    • Yea, once you read the abbreviation once, it sticks!

      • YMMV

        • Your Mileage May Vary:
          your experience may be different.

    • Given this craps all over the GoPro Hero 8 and 9 (speaking from personal experience), you'll be thrilled with it if you buy it having come from the Hero 5 :)

Harvey Norman @ $218 if a $1 saving sways anybody.

      • Ouch!

    Amazon is price matching.

Grabbed one from there. delivery tomorrow.

Sold out by the looks of it.

  • Worth buying if I have a Hero 8 Black?

    • -1

I got the Hero 7 and was close to buying this, but decided I do not use it enough to justify the upgrade.
Maybe if you can manage to sell it on marketplace for $200?

  • I think they are dropping the price because the Action 5 release is imminent, but this is still a good price.

    • Any rumors/leaks yet on potential RRP of the new model yet?

  • Now the question is :
This or action4? I heard action 4 has better mic?

  • +2

    GeorgesCamera also $219.

Apparently the 3 has focus issues? 4 is also a lot better in low light. Wonder if I should hold out for the 4 if they are announcing the release of the 5..

  • Anyone mounting this on their motorcycles?

    • +1

I have mine mounted on a bicycle (in a SmallRig cage), and it works well.

      • Where abouts ?

        • I have it mounted on the handlebars not far from the center column. Fairly standard 32mm bike mount with GoPro mount "output".

    • +1

I attach mine to a Dango gripper mount that clips into the chinbar of my helmet.

  • +2

Goes underwater for 16M without any additional accessories = SOLD

  • Still waiting for Osmo Pocket 3 to drop the price.

    • That's going to be a while.

  • Nothing comes close for $219.

  • Wow awesome price.

I bought my version 1 for a similar price years ago. It’s awesome. I think I’ll pick this up now as me version 1 is slowly on the way out.

  • Can I have my cake and eat it? I want a budget camera that works well in low light/night. Starting my doordash delivery slave YouTube channel for my ozbargain fan base.

  • Why they call this a combo?

    • +3

Standard combo comes with case and basic mount.

Adventure combo comes with 2 extra batteries + charging case + extension stick, and everything the standard combo comes with.

  • +4

Is it not a better deal to go for the adventure combo? For an extra $120 you're getting $260 worth of added accessories?

    https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/dji-osmo-action-3-adventu…

    • I agree. I have the adventure combo. Just the extra battery and case is worth it especially when travelling and swapping put batteries. The battery case with the batteries actually acts as a portable powerbank.. which i thought was awesome!

  • +1

Does this have dashcam features like loop recording or write over, on/off with external power?

  • Can I use this without a smartphone and any apps?

    • +2

The user is forced to activate the camera with the DJI Mimo app. There are 5 power cycles until the camera will not progress past the activate screen. After this the camera cannot be used without the app to activate. Absolute garbage. The DJI app is not available on the Google Play store so DJI requires side loading from their website. This smells of data harvesting and security issues by DJI. I collected this camera this morning, but now considering returning it as I don't want to side load apps kicked off the play store.

      • Thanks! Yes this is why I'll avoid it.
Any way to activate it on a burner phone then uninstall the app permanently and just use the SD to transfer to PC?

      • Wait ! Are you saying if you have an android phone you can't use this camera at all ?

        • You can buy side loading the app. The app isn't available on the play store for some reason.

Anyone manage to get the DJI Mimo app working on a pixel 7? Doesn't get past the DJI logo screen for me

    • No luck, you have to deactivate security to get it on as it's not approved for the Play store.

  • Is this still in stock? Every store showing stock available but not for click and collect.

    • That is weird indeed.

      • +1

If it's not being discontinued maybe we can go in store and pay and then receive when they get new stock. Hopefully someone who works at JB can clarify.

    • +1

Good point, that's what I am experiencing as well. Much prefer click and collect to making a trip to find out it's not available..also can you use gift cards if it's an in store purchase?

  • +1

Everywhere I looked was out of stock. My other local JB didn't answer their phone. So I ended up getting the DJI Osmo Action 3 Adventure Combo for $339 - $10 perks voucher.
