  • has anyone used one of these? the last USB->HDMI adaptor I used was horribly unreliable and the build quality felt very cheap

Yep I've got one. They're okay but I wouldn't use them for any intensive work. They don't work if you already have two screens. For the $49 you're better off getting a really low end GPU. If it's for a laptop then it might be a good substitute but I haven't checked it. I would still avoid though.

Oh, and the drivers are terrible.

      • thanks, driver problems were definitely an issue previously - this would only be occasional use for a family member who was too cheap to buy a laptop with HDMI output about 6 months before they became ubiquitous :)

I bought one these from ebay for my uncle. Works fairly well on his all in one pc. No driver issues at all, automatically detected by Windows 7. You can use the windows 7 display properties to change the settings rather than install the software from the cd it came with.

  • I bought one off eBay (not the same one as this one) and it seemed laggy. like i was remotely accessing a computer over wifi. Is this normal? or should it be exactly as if there was a direct link to the screen?

    • Shouldn't be laggy.. on my i7-2600 I was running 1080P bluray through it and was surprised it coped relatively well — it does however when displaying video use up a considerable amount of cpu.. In the displaylink manager you can tell it to optimise for video which seems to use a different compression method to improve performance…

On my system (which is relatively fast) you cannot really tell its running over usb2 when running day to day apps..

Games is probably a different kettle of fish

  • I own a few of these (work/home) but the slightly higher model (the WS-UG19D1 which supports 1920 x 1200) and never really had any issues with it other than maybe once every 2 months of use it doesn't initialise at windows startup until I unplug and replug it back in (but I suspect its more a case of my monitors built in USB hub than the hardware).

I have noticed its touchy with cheap USB cables so if the supplied one is thick and sturdy it doesn't seem to drop the output (I tried a longer thinner cable and the voltage drop was too much and it kept dropping out)

for $50 you can find better ones in ebay if you have usb 3.0 , they will output it to 1080p.

I have this one and also a usb 3 one. If you want for games forget about it, if its just for internet and office you should be fine… not a bargain …

  • i've got one off ebay thats 2.0 and have no issues outputting 1080

ps, as stated this isn't a bargain price
