Buying a Tesla Model Y - Any Suggestions?

Going to get a Tesla Model Y. Any tips for worthwhile extras?

I've been advised the following may be worthwhile:

  • Hydro g9 exterior surface coating
  • Ceramic window film

Also, is it worth bothering with roadside assist?

If I were you, I'd be waiting for Tesla to increase their whole car warranty to 10 years / 250,000kms (whichever occurs first). MG has just started offering that and I'll be darn happy with an EV surviving that long.

Any regular petrol car would be on its way out at that level of use.

    • +3

You could be waiting a while.

Even Lexus, regarded as the most reliable car manufacturer only give a 5 year warranty.

Any regular petrol car would be on its way out at that level of use.

You pbviously dont know that the AVERAGE age of petrol cars in Aus is about 11years.

I don't think you are going to get any meaningful recommendations on this site. Anyway, my suggestions are:

    1. Don't bother with ceramic coating or PPF
    2. I have tinted my windows and find them great. You need to get this done separately.
    3. Tesla's come with roadside assistance for the duration of the warranty period

Regarding accessories - this is a personal choice and it's upto you on what you want. I recommend the following:

    1. Floor mats, boot mats, frunk mats
    2. USB-C Hub for the centre console
    3. Storage bucket/tray for the boot
    4. 3rd party wheel covers
    5. SD card for Dashcam/Sentry
    6. Video Game controller (You could purchase a cheap PS4 controller)
    • What do you use video game controller for?

Teslas have built-in games to keep you entertained while charging the car

I don't charge in public often but when I do, it's way nicer to have Netflix or games to play than sitting on phone doom-scrolling

        • How is it connected? by bluetooth?

          • @Aerith-Waifu: Sorry for late reply, I have 2 controllers, one old PS3 one which is connected via USB in the glovebox to a hub and a 8BitDo Ultimate which is connected via Bluetooth

Do it OP - you won’t regret it, amazing car, especially at current prices.

Skip the paint protection, and the Y has pretty decent factory tint, so I’d give it a few weeks of summer to see how you go. Can always add window tint later.

    • Are you sure it's tint? Most car makers don't tint the windows and only do privacy glass which does not block heat or UV, which is why you want to get your car tinted in Australia. I did a quick google and looks like Tesla do the privacy glass too, and its not actual tint.

      • -1

Yup, that's correct. It's not tint.

      • +5

This is a common myth. Rear privacy glass do block out both IR and UV on the Tesla Model Y. It was tested by a tinter when the Model Y was first released here.

        • +1

Agreed, whatever it is on model y, it works well for heat and uv

Window tint seems like a popular option. Strange how people like telling others how they have a Tesla but don't want to be seen in one.

Ceramic coating is worth it if you can afford it IMHO. But do it through a reputable specialised independent detailer, do not purchase via your novated lease or finance company or anything else. It's not the same!

  • If you can wait like 1-1.5 years you could get the refresh.

  • Wait for J U N I P E R.

Get a fire extinguisher for the garage.

    • +1

Pointless, they don't work on lithium fires.

Good news is the media and authorities will blame anything but the car, no matter what the eye witnesses say

Ceramic coating is just another way for the car industry to milk more money from consumers. You can easily buy similar products and apply it yourself if you are that inclined at a fraction of the cost. Some take more effort and care to apply. If you are lazy like me, just get stuff like Bowden's Own Happy Ending, which is just sprayed on and washed off.
People tend to get excited about the prospect of buying a new car and get suckered into paying more money for stuff like ceramic coating. The novelty will wear off after a few months. Just wash and wax the car regularly and it'll still look perfectly clean.

    • Learn how to detail a car properly and do it twice a year.

  • Get a charger installed at home and a good electricity plan with low night time rates.
Assumming you don't have solar and live in a house.

    • And pay more during the day?

  • buy a charger, as they don't provide one.
buy a spare tyre, as they don't provide one
buy a roof shade, as they don't provide one

  • all weather mats including the boot and back seat

Who would buy a Model Y now with the facelift around the corner?

  • +1

Get the lifesize Elon blow up doll. You have to email them, it's not listed on the site.

    • +3

Guess where the inflation nozzle is

  • Have you test driven the latest Model 3? I did and when I later test drove the Model Y, it was a let down

    • Letdown how?

  • Seems like you have the main bases covered 👍

If you have kids in the back this is the best $25 you’ll spend to protect the weird little piece of carpet that gets hammered every time they get in and out

    Any Suggestions?

    Yeah, Musk is a twat

  • +4

    Get the mudflaps

  • 3rd Party HUD because there's no instrument cluster

    • I thought about one but the speedo is on corner closest to your eyes on the big screen anyway. If there was a windscreen HUD, I'd probably get one but the ones that attach above the steering wheel will still require you to look down.

I have a 4 month old Model Y in blue which has full PPF done with STEK DynoPRISM film. Makes the car look like a Twilight vampire in sunlight and gives it a purple reflection.

Also have 3M darkest legal ceramic tint and heaps of extras like floor mats, all the storage boxes throughout the car, protective grills for the floor vents, front bumper, weathershield for frunk, pleather seat covers, etc.

No regrets. Love the car to bits and it's our family daily driver. I still have my ute to get to work and wife generally has the Tesla to cart the kids around.

I skipped ceramic coating because I used to do it on my ute and realised PPF is much better protection since it can heal scratches itself, it's also nice to have a unique coloured Tesla.

    • How much did it cost you for the PPF out of interest? Got a pic?

  • Skip it and get the juniper. You will regret it

  • Mud Flaps front and back
Paint Protection Film for the rear door https://shop.tesla.com/en_au/product/model-y-paint-protectio…
Rear Under Seat Air Conditioning Outlet Vent Grille Cover
Frunk, Trunk, rear seat boot liners / protectors so that it is easy to clean
    Rubber Car Jack Pad
Tyre Plug kit / cigarette lighter air pump
    Screen Protector
Sort out your home charging situation
Take a look at various interior protection if you have young kids
I bought various guards so that the front of the car does not accumulate leaves / branches.

free flowing catback and a tune

Towbar just prove electric cars can do towing. On long trips you could tow your own diesel generator to charge it

I found these accessories to be the most useful:
. Sunshade for roof & windscreen
. All weather floor mat & trunk/frunk mat
    . Centre console organiser tray
    . Head rest pillow
    . Portable air pump
    . Mud flaps.

I got most of them from X-Car on Ebay.

  • Get a Tesla Wall Charger

Thanks for all the tips, much appreciated … I've even enjoyed reading the comments from those who may have been sniffing a bit too much petrol

  • Congratulations for buying the best SUV in the market

    Use Premium and not e10.

  • A clublock

  • get the tint done, and if you do get the ceramic coating done, look after it :)

A tesla is only has a design life of 10 years to match the battery and electronics. Its not like it'll be driving around on classic car rego in 30 years. So why bother protecting the paint? I'd just get a ceramic spray product from ozbargain and spray it on as part of your washing routine. If you are generally parking your tesla undercover anyways so that removes the need for major UV protection.

A tesla is only has a design life of 10 years to match the battery and electronics.

Citation needed. Where's your evidence that the battery and electronics are designed for a 10 year lifespan?

The battery has a standard warranty of 8 years, and expected to soon be extended to 10 years. Tesla claims they are designed for 800,000km - which is not the same as a time frame, but gives some indication.
