Buying a Tesla Model Y - Any Suggestions?

Going to get a Tesla Model Y. Any tips for worthwhile extras?

I've been advised the following may be worthwhile:

  • Hydro g9 exterior surface coating
  • Ceramic window film

Also, is it worth bothering with roadside assist?

  • Nice flex….

    • Surface coating = babying = stretching budget

    • Has OP considered the other EV options?
Prices for Telslas (both new and used) are CRASHING!

Whatever you do, don't purchase any of that through the dealership. This applies for every brand of car.

Have you through about what you are going to name the car’s Instagram account? Had a think about what vanity number plate you’re going to go with? Have you told everyone you know you are buying a Tesla? Have you joined all the relevant Facebook and Reddit Tesla circlejerks “owners groups? Got a list of EV talking points to but into any conversations about EV’s?

    You aren’t buying a car, you’re buying into a way of life…

  • +2

    You need custom plates.

  • +3

Also, is it worth bothering with roadside assist

Cheaper option may be curve side assist.

  • Yes, I have a few suggestions for your number plate:
    TSLA
    MODELY
    MUSX
    FSD404

Roadside assist could possibly be useful as you're buying an EV and charging stations aren't as around every corner like petrol stations

Don't waste your money on ceramic coating (we did - inside and out - and it did absolutely nothing for the look, dirt or scratch resistance)

    Spend your money on;
    * Window tinting (keeps the sun out, and reduces power needed for HVAC)
    * Paint Protection Film (we only did front, but regret not doing the whole car). That stuff is magic for light scratches and keeps stone chips at bay. Telsa paint is… ok, but not the most resilient.

You do not need roadside assist.

Not everyone likes the government breathing down their necks over twitter posts narratives. He's not an arse to people who support free speech.

    • It appears coatings aren’t equal, I marvel at how easy it is to maintain my new car with a coating, compared to the old one without. Once a week I simply foam it and pressure spray, and once a month I go over it with a micro fibre mitt, buckets etc.

Ceramic coatings do nothing for scratch resistance that is true.

Droppings, bugs, etc just spray off on the in between washes, it’s epic!

Don’t get me wrong, grime and stuff does sometimes stick, hence the once a month hand wash, but for me it’s vastly reduced the amount of time I spend on cleaning it, and reduced the number of times I actually have to touch the car to clean it.

Having said that, if you aren’t inclined to get special shampoos, foam canons and stuff, and DIY, and just take it through a commercial car wash (inc touch free or using the chemicals at diy car washes), a ceramic coating is useless and will be vaporised by the detergents and/or brushes very quickly.

Get your own windscreen cleaner. You have no business using the ones at petrol stations.

    • But those free window cleaning tools come with bonus muck and gritty bits. It's filled with scratchy goodness!

  • +1

Make sure you get the long range even thoigh your only going to drive in the city.

Check the option for full self drive. Itll be avaiable real soon now.

    • I sense sarcasm in those words. OP - everything euphemistic said but reversed ;)
Seriously though, have you considered the BYD Sealion which is on the horizon? I'd caution it's better than the Y?

  • +4

Had Y LR for 2 weeks now, and man, I am not fcking going back to petrol. Life is fun, happy days.

  • No.
    No.
If you live metro probably No.
(Some owners seem to get nails and need assist)

Either get the standard 19 inch wheels or do a search on OZB to compose your complaint about harsh ride and curb rash….

Get in with local groups now because it’s a very well-respected car on the dogging scene

"Also, is it worth bothering with roadside assist"

What are you going to do when you have a power failure or run out of battery power?

You cant just run up to the nearest servo and grab a can of petrol to pour into the tank.

      Eneloops

    • Organise a tow truck ?

      • -2

Can't, it is a Tesla, needs a specific tow truck.

    • Lol, how often do you run out of petrol?

Great car, had mine for 2 years, ordered it within mins it launched! Can't see myself getting another brand and my kids absolutely love it. Just waiting on the new Model X. But the Juniper could be here within a year possibly so it's up to you.

I did ceramic windows film. I personally wouldn't bother with coating. But i did DIY some PPF. Fairly easy to do. You probably should ask Tesla related questions in the Tesla section of Whirlpool. Teslas are hated on this site for some reason and tends to get people's panties in a wad. I believe the roadside assistance is 3 or 4 years or 80,000km.

  • I'd also wait for Juniper.

I'd get window tint but unless it's under $400, I'd go direct to the tinting company. I got my SUV tinted with Hybrid metal film for $200. It's a standard tint. I couldn't justify paying double for the top of the range one. It comes with lifetime warranty.

Doesn't Tesla come with roadside assist as standard with a new car?

  • -1

If I were you, I'd be waiting for Tesla to increase their whole car warranty to 10 years / 250,000kms (whichever occurs first). MG has just started offering that and I'll be darn happy with an EV surviving that long.

Any regular petrol car would be on its way out at that level of use.

    • +2

You could be waiting a while.

Even Lexus, regarded as the most reliable car manufacturer only give a 5 year warranty.

  • +2

I don't think you are going to get any meaningful recommendations on this site. Anyway, my suggestions are:

    1. Don't bother with ceramic coating or PPF
    2. I have tinted my windows and find them great. You need to get this done separately.
    3. Tesla's come with roadside assistance for the duration of the warranty period

Regarding accessories - this is a personal choice and it's upto you on what you want. I recommend the following:

    1. Floor mats, boot mats, frunk mats
    2. USB-C Hub for the centre console
    3. Storage bucket/tray for the boot
    4. 3rd party wheel covers
    5. SD card for Dashcam/Sentry
    6. Video Game controller (You could purchase a cheap PS4 controller)
  • Do it OP - you won’t regret it, amazing car, especially at current prices.

Skip the paint protection, and the Y has pretty decent factory tint, so I’d give it a few weeks of summer to see how you go. Can always add window tint later.

    • Are you sure it's tint? Most car makers don't tint the windows and only do privacy glass which does not block heat or UV, which is why you want to get your car tinted in Australia. I did a quick google and looks like Tesla do the privacy glass too, and its not actual tint.

  • -1

Window tint seems like a popular option. Strange how people like telling others how they have a Tesla but don't want to be seen in one.

  • Ceramic coating is worth it if you can afford it IMHO. But do it through a reputable specialised independent detailer, do not purchase via your novated lease or finance company or anything else. It's not the same!

  • If you can wait like 1-1.5 years you could get the refresh.
