Going to get a Tesla Model Y. Any tips for worthwhile extras?
I've been advised the following may be worthwhile:
- Hydro g9 exterior surface coating
- Ceramic window film
Also, is it worth bothering with roadside assist?

Surface coating = babying = stretching budget
Has OP considered the other EV options?
Prices for Telslas (both new and used) are CRASHING!
This is true but they've dropped their price so much on the base Model Y it can't be beaten in this category for price. They never could before as everyone else only has small SUVs but now even more so, there's simply no cheaper alternative.
I was quite disappointed to hear that the BYD Seal U (renamed Sealion 6) is only a plug in hybrid that has the exact same range with the same fuel tank as the Haval H6 Ultra Hybrid which doesn't require any charging at all and is 25% cheaper). This was meant to be the Tesla killer but it looks like we'll have to wait before we can get the fully electric version that Europe and Asia gets first.
I doubt it has the same range, you got a link?
The Sealion will be able to do a bunch of kms up front for free, so If you are mainly driving to the shops, kids pick up, and you work in one spot you probably aren't using any petrol. That's a big difference, even though I think they should have released an EV only model.
@Jackson: Not sure what link you're hoping for as all the fuel economies are published online, just Google them. They can be a bit off so you might be better checking real world reviews instead. I can verify that GWM's brochure is pretty accurate for the Haval H6 Ultra Hybrid as I've done about 4,000km in mine and my fuel consumption is 5.54L/100km with a mix of highway and city driving. This means that my 61L fuel tank would give me 1101km of range which is basically what BYD is advertising for the Sealion 6.
Yes, if you go home after short trips everyday to charge it then you save on fuel vs a hybrid. However, the battery will die a lot earlier as you're trying to get the little battery to perform like a fully electric car that has 5x the capacity and life. If you don't charge it everyday, you're just lugging around an extra 500kg and overpaying vs a regular hybrid that never needs to be plugged in.
@supersabroso: I heard the sealion 6 will do 2000km in ideal circumstances, but should do at least 1200. but again it depends what you are comparing, if you expect the person never to charge their battery every night then it's probably the same, and even that woudl be a feat because it's heavier. But most people can park at home and charge, and factoring that it's 100km ahead.
I think you will find that the battery will have a bit more strain on it, but saying it will die earlier is a stretch. BYD's LFP batteries are amongs the best in performing in the market, and are far ahead of the old NMCs used in a lot of cars when it comes to their robustness. I don't think anyone will be replacing a battery for at least 30 years, and as such it's probably nothing to think about. John Cadogan/Autoexpert recently did a story on a home battery and the performance of the BYD batteries was borne out in numbers by government sponsored testing, being modeled at still holding 60% charge 14.5 years of daily cycling. As such, you would still be driving this car with no issues well into the 30 year mark and even if degredation is linear, you would be getting 35% or the original battery or 30km. It's likely not to be linear by the way, it's likely to be a bit faster when you first buy it and then flatten out
Either way, that's a great range you are getting with your Haval, and I think you will get many happy years of motoring out of it. People are generally overly cautious IMO about reliability
@Jackson: I did a bit of research into the 2,000km range as it sounds amazing but it's definitely not what we have in Australia. This is the next generation (5th) DM-i engine that has just been released in China on the new BYD sedans (Seal 06 & Qin L) and it sounds like completely breakthrough technology. If this is true then the rest of the market will race to copy them or die off because it's almost doubled the petrol efficiency which sounds too good to be true. So yeah, it's for the Seal 6 not the Sealion 6 lol otherwise this car would be completely sold out with a 24 month wait time.
Don't see why this is? It's a middle class car
Buying a Tesla Model Y
Any Suggestions?
Yes, don't….
Good suggestion jv
Here is another reason https://www.tiktok.com/@mguy.tv/video/7404729060758129941
Why bother asking? It's not like you're going to comment
You mean like participating in discussions that you start?
It's like you jumped into a group situation, asked a question, then left the room straight after… what's the point in the discussion?!
Your last post you didn't respond whatsoever, and this you've just given as little as possible
@ozburgin: And with that attitude, a Tesla is perfect for you!
@spackbace: Ouch!
Suggestion: Know your ground clearance before you take on curves.
It's electric - no carbies on this one.
cerbs dammit
That’s why I have a Renault
Does it have a scratched bonut?
I thought I am the only one with one….. oh wait! Lol
Whatever you do, don't purchase any of that through the dealership. This applies for every brand of car.
Genuine question, which add-ons are good for purchase from dealership and which ones in general are better quality and cheaper outside?
Generally everything is better and cheaper outside but an exception might be genuine branded accessories that are designed specifically for that model of car.
Thanks.
So things like ceramic coating, etc, would it be better to get those done by third parties?
@bigbadboogieman: Tesla in Australia does not ceramic coating, PPF and windows tinting.
@vtml: no I meant in general when buying a new car, not Tesla.
@bigbadboogieman: I suggest doing your own research with external offers vs what the dealership offers.
Wait for Juniper
Musk said not this year, so you'll be waiting a while.
And if the Model 3 Highland update is anything to go by then there might not be any driveline changes (battery/engine). Just a cosmetic refresh before a more substantial update in the coming years (800V and larger batteries).
It’s already end of August, so just need to wait till next year. It doesn’t seem like a cosmetic update. Seems like there’s a few more updates included to combat the vastly highly equipped SUV.
It's all just rumours and speculation so far, unless you know something that I don't?
YUCK
Yup, petrol is Yuck. Agree
DAT Y
Any Suggestions?
Any colour other than white.
.. Or any colour as long as it's white!
Throwback to Campbells Cash and Carry - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=03O_0jcWnw8
Have you through about what you are going to name the car’s Instagram account? Had a think about what vanity number plate you’re going to go with? Have you told everyone you know you are buying a Tesla? Have you joined all the relevant Facebook and Reddit Tesla circlejerks “owners groups? Got a list of EV talking points to but into any conversations about EV’s?
You aren’t buying a car, you’re buying into a way of life…
You need custom plates.
Also, is it worth bothering with roadside assist
Cheaper option may be curve side assist.
Yes, I have a few suggestions for your number plate:
TSLA
MODELY
MUSX
FSD404
FFSGIT
SPACEX
PAYPAL
CTRUCK
TRUMP
SPACEX is taken that's mine haha
for flip sake get it together?
Burnt after 200 cars destroyed by ev
Roadside assist could possibly be useful as you're buying an EV and charging stations aren't as around every corner like petrol stations
True, but Tesla already includes free roadside assist during the base warranty period (4 years).
Don't waste your money on ceramic coating (we did - inside and out - and it did absolutely nothing for the look, dirt or scratch resistance)
Spend your money on;
* Window tinting (keeps the sun out, and reduces power needed for HVAC)
* Paint Protection Film (we only did front, but regret not doing the whole car). That stuff is magic for light scratches and keeps stone chips at bay. Telsa paint is… ok, but not the most resilient.
You do not need roadside assist.
Obligatory "Elon Musk is an arse."
Unless he feels personally offended by said free speech.
No ones perfect, at least he's having a go, like Raygun.
He has a right to sue for slander, free speech doesn't mean you lie down and take the beating, or put up with harrassment. Words have consequences but politicians shouldn't have any say in what is allowed or not allowed.
@lew380: This makes no sense.
Politicians play a part in determining the law on slander through the statutes they enact and do not enact, so they do have a say in what is allowed under your own definition of free speech lol.
@vetopower: If they enact law, then sure that's their job, but not for silencing political view points and individuals on media platforms, which twitter was doing! Twitter was an arm for a political faction until musk took it over.
I don't see how free speech is misunderstood. You still can't threaten or dox or harras, but everything else is all good, under the law anyway.
He has a right to sue for slander
I'm talking about when he first took over and made a song and dance about free speech before promptly blocking users who legitimately criticised him. I'm not a hater but the man has very thin skin. Maybe that's why he seeks to align with Trump - probably the most sensitive world leader outside NK in the past decade.
@us3rnam3tak3n: Ah I see, orange man bad syndrome. Not much anyone can do for you.
Yea he shouldn't have done that, that was a bit childish, even billionaires can be a little rash, I can forgive him for several instances, can't forgive the other media platforms for the MILLIONS of everyday people and celebrities who question government bullshit.
orange man bad syndrome
You're putting words in my mouth. I just said the guy is hypersensitive. Hardly controversial.
@us3rnam3tak3n: You compared Trump to Kim Jung un and called him a sensitive little bitch. You got the syndrome.
@lew380: Granted, I'm no expert on global politics but surely it isn't controversial to rank Kim and Donald as the most sensitive leaders of the past decade. Any other standouts for you? Maybe Macron - he does seem to have a thing about his height.
@us3rnam3tak3n: It's not controversial because of the growing mental health epidemic and the normalisation of fake news. I meet people just like you, your not alone, but do some critical thinking and find sources.
@lew380: You seem to have ventured into some rabbit hole. Whatever floats your boat mate.
It appears coatings aren’t equal, I marvel at how easy it is to maintain my new car with a coating, compared to the old one without. Once a week I simply foam it and pressure spray, and once a month I go over it with a micro fibre mitt, buckets etc.
Ceramic coatings do nothing for scratch resistance that is true.
Droppings, bugs, etc just spray off on the in between washes, it’s epic!
Don’t get me wrong, grime and stuff does sometimes stick, hence the once a month hand wash, but for me it’s vastly reduced the amount of time I spend on cleaning it, and reduced the number of times I actually have to touch the car to clean it.
Having said that, if you aren’t inclined to get special shampoos, foam canons and stuff, and DIY, and just take it through a commercial car wash (inc touch free or using the chemicals at diy car washes), a ceramic coating is useless and will be vaporised by the detergents and/or brushes very quickly.
The DIY coatings (not 2 stage) aren't hard to put on if anyone reading is inclined. You get a similar level of cleaning ease u/j49w has mentioned but you do need to top it up every 6-12 months (product says "up to 2 years").
They go on SLIGHTLY more difficult than a spray on detailer, but overall easier to apply than a wax or polish in my experience. I'm using a chemical guys one on a 1.5 year old musso and pretty happy with it.
Some of their color options are +$2600, for that price the paint should be much better than OK!
Get your own windscreen cleaner. You have no business using the ones at petrol stations.
But those free window cleaning tools come with bonus muck and gritty bits. It's filled with scratchy goodness!
lol, what about those tesla drivers who come into servos to fill air
They're not on OzB otherwise they'd be using Xiaomi electric pumps which keep turning up here.
Make sure you get the long range even thoigh your only going to drive in the city.
Check the option for full self drive. Itll be avaiable real soon now.
I sense sarcasm in those words. OP - everything euphemistic said but reversed ;)
Seriously though, have you considered the BYD Sealion which is on the horizon? I'd caution it's better than the Y?
Sealion is a petrol car with a tiny battery added.
The new model they are bringing out in the Sealion range is a full EV. It's out overseas already.
Personally I think it's too big for an EV, and prefer the Atto anyway if you're already looking at an SUV
@Phoenixzeus: Sounds good. The current Sealion seems like a gimmick to me, just an excuse to say it has 1000km range. As if anyone ever drives 1000km without a break.
@donga100: Completely agree. Not sure why anyone would want a hybrid from an EV company.
@donga100: might not drive a 1000km without a break, but in holiday periods you might have to drive a 1000km before you get an available charger.
@donga100: Agreed, if you want 1000km of range just get a normal hybrid for a fraction of the price. If you want to pretend that it's an EV, you have to plug it in almost every single day instead of just once a week. You'll also have a full tank of fuel that's expiring away for 6 months at a time. Are those two tanks of fuel a year really worth having a whole extra ICE engine set-up in your car to maintain by not going fully EV? Go fully EV or stick with the cheaper hybrid car that you never have to plug in.
@supersabroso: Dont even need 1000km range in a hybrid. You can get petrol everywhere with no waiting. 1000km range is a stupid idea unless youre travelling outback off the main routes you just end up carting around excess fuel most of the time.
FSD: One year away since 2013
Had Y LR for 2 weeks now, and man, I am not fcking going back to petrol. Life is fun, happy days.
its called honeymoon phase.
No.
No.
If you live metro probably No.
(Some owners seem to get nails and need assist)
Either get the standard 19 inch wheels or do a search on OZB to compose your complaint about harsh ride and curb rash….
Get in with local groups now because it’s a very well-respected car on the dogging scene
"Also, is it worth bothering with roadside assist"
What are you going to do when you have a power failure or run out of battery power?
You cant just run up to the nearest servo and grab a can of petrol to pour into the tank.
Eneloops
Gooloo
Organise a tow truck ?
Can't, it is a Tesla, needs a specific tow truck.
Lol, how often do you run out of petrol?
Never. Doesn't use petrol to start with.
Oh, @HeWhoKnows is a Tesla driver?
Im guessing the people that makes this comment run on about $3 of petrol and push their car to the servo.
Not even joking, having worked in a servo in a different time
Great car, had mine for 2 years, ordered it within mins it launched! Can't see myself getting another brand and my kids absolutely love it. Just waiting on the new Model X. But the Juniper could be here within a year possibly so it's up to you.
I did ceramic windows film. I personally wouldn't bother with coating. But i did DIY some PPF. Fairly easy to do. You probably should ask Tesla related questions in the Tesla section of Whirlpool. Teslas are hated on this site for some reason and tends to get people's panties in a wad. I believe the roadside assistance is 3 or 4 years or 80,000km.
I'd also wait for Juniper.
I'd get window tint but unless it's under $400, I'd go direct to the tinting company. I got my SUV tinted with Hybrid metal film for $200. It's a standard tint. I couldn't justify paying double for the top of the range one. It comes with lifetime warranty.
Doesn't Tesla come with roadside assist as standard with a new car?
The included roadside assistance for flat tyres is only valid for within 80kms of a Tesla service centre.
Interesting.
Is there any other car maker that doesn’t provide roadside assist as standard for a new car?
Nice flex….
