  • This or BPCtech's Openbox Macbook M1 PRO ? for $1099

    • +3

Openbox can't be 100% sure what you get

    • OOS plus no apple care option. Kinda a necessity for me at least based on repair costs

      • it's not OOS, but its 16gig ram vs the 8gig stock on the M2

    • +3

I got one from BPCtech. Perfect condition. 100% health battery and 5 cycles only. It is better because it has 16gb ram and will last much longer.

Get $1400 off any MacBook Air M2 or M3 when you switch your number instore to JB HI-FI Mobile on a $99 Plan over 24 months!

  • Why other colors no sale?

    • Why is the sky blue?

      • +7

        It isn't. It's space grey

    • The "Midnight" AKA black, shows up fingerprints like crazy, perhaps that's why? It's very annoying.

  • +3

Nowhere mention of the 8GB RAM.

    • +35

      8GB ram

    • +2

It's the default still atm. Should be in the title anyway, you're right.

      • Ahhh sorry I'll know for next time, was looking at previous posts and copied parts of the titles

Why not buy a windows laptop for a less price with 16GB of RAM?

    😳

Await a flurry of comments from Tim Cooks Army

I am a huge fan of Apple laptops, but damn, Tim Apple needs to stop cheaping out on memory. This is ridiculous. To sell a computer in 2024 with 8GB of memory is bonkers.

The fact they sell a Macbook Pro - PRO with only 8GB is a freaking joke. Just wild that they do that with a straight face.

      • -1

Learn a bit about how Apple prices their products. You could also just ignore the 8GB option.

8GB is perfectly fine - it definitely still has its place. Though, I agree a 8GB "Pro" device is a joke.

      • +8

Actually, there's something smart and a little sinister about the 8gb default with a small ssd…

When your computer calls for more than 8gb for daily tasks, your Apple borrows space from your ssd as temporary writes. And yes, you've guessed right, there is a very finite number of writes you can do on a ssd, particularly on small size ssd like 256gb, and if you do this daily because of your work flow, it's time to get the calculator out to figure out if you'd actually last the time you intend for money you spend.

Eg If you are a routine desktop transferer for big files like movies, graphics, etc. Write limit for ssd 256 gb is typically 200-250 thousand gb total.

Once your ssd write limit is reached, your macbook will not turn on again until something is done and if it's soldered, good luck, you now need a skilled technician with dedicated time to remediate or, have apple care…

Whilst this problem is not completely unique to Apple products, boy, what a thoughtful business decision to fast track company growth by use of product obsolescence. Not everyone is affected by this but there's a subset of people with certain heavy use workflows on a smaller budget need to take into consideration.

          • @ihfree: Swapping to a drive has never been a good thing.

            • @Namesareapain: Yeah, why is why users should be buying a properly specced machine. It is however, not a bad thing for certain circumstances. For lighter workloads, it's probably going to make minimal difference to the life of the machine and performance.

It's been almost 4 years since the release of the original M1 and durability has been explored by various users in that time. Example -
The life expectancy of SSD in M1 MacBook

Virtual memory is not a new "smart" or "sinister" thing. It's in use across pretty much every OS.

      • Same here - although the last time I said something similar I got downvoted to oblivion 😂

      • +2

No one buys that MacBook Pro, except perhaps an otherwise MBA buyer finding that an amazing deal for it.
It only exists as a price headliner.

    • +1

A laptop is more than RAM or CPU.

The appeal of the MBA is a quality screen, aspect ratio, keyboard, touchpad, battery life, lack of a fan, decent speakers.

You'll also find an equivalent Windows device with similar attributes costs a similar amount.

Also, it would be a lot more helpful to suggest a alternate product.

      • +6

His point still counts. A Pro should have at least 16gb

        • -4

He hasn't made a point about a pro model.

      • +3

We understand that those things are desirable about a MBA, but the beautiful design, fast CPU and high quality components you mentioned are severely kneecapped by the very limited ram. Something that shouldn't cost much but does because it's Apple's way to sell junk despite having the best components and design (particularly CPUs) in the business. Unfortunately many people will buy these and they'll provide a subpar experience when any non office tasks are attempted. As mentioned above the swap partition will be used all the time and the soldered SSDs will fail at much higher rates than they should also. Apple simply should either have a more balanced (or just plain better) offering at the price point these go for or only sell more premium positioned hardware.

        • -5

You might understand that. Many users do not. When there's a narrow focus on RAM or suggestions of consumer-grade trash, they clearly do not understand things.

It's all about choosing the right amount of RAM for the job. I have computers with between 8GB(1 GB if you include an RPI) and 64GB of RAM. I know I won't be able to run what I run on a machine with 64GB on my 8GB machine but also would have no desire to as the machines are for different purposes.

I have a base model MBA and it is the computer I use most at home - It's perfectly fine for what I use it for. I could also have spent more on a 16GB machine but, it would go unused and have been a waste of money. Hell, if I was being frugal, I would also have been largely happy with a refurb.

          • +5

@ihfree: Unfortunately you might understand the impact that a computer having limited RAM has, but many people purchasing a (RRP) 1600 dollar computer don't have the deep knowledge of computing we have (yes, understanding the impacts of ram is relatively deep knowledge).

They see a lavishly built, snappy and responsive computer, and rightfully expect it to be useful for things outside of light tasks. Unfortunately many users will have a sub-par experience due to Apple's (entirely deliberate) kneecapping of the computer.

Selling this computer for this price is pure corporate greed and in my view anti-consumer. They're taking advantage of the fact that many people associate Apple with ease of use and quality (usually justified) and so buy the cheapest option they can afford (still not cheap!), only to be faced with slowdown when attempting more complex tasks. There's a reason Apple charge $300 for 8gig of ram and it ain't because it costs that much

            • -6

@robinbanks: You would hope that people purchasing such systems would be making more informed choices. Other than the whole 8gb=16gb on a old Windows device, there is a heap of information on how various applications run on Apple Silicon.

              • Various forums for professional/hobbies. Eg: Macs are popular amongst photographers, IT.
              • finding knowledgable sales people(which rules out most major retailers) - maybe in an Apple store.
              • Reading software requirements
              • A/B comparisons on Youtube
              • Asking a specific question

I don't know about or many of the other users here but I put a decent amount of research into purchases - especially if they are considered expensive.

              pure corporate greed

That's the job of a company - maximise profits for shareholders.

On the plus side, the Windows ARM based devices appear to be reviewing OK, hopefully there will be some decent competition soon which should put downward pressure on device. Hopefully, this competition will also give us some cheaper devices with some of the more important attributes in a mobile device such as battery life.

              • @ihfree: The claim that 8 GB of shared memory on a Mac is somehow equal 16 GB on a Windows system is an abject lie that anyone that has a reasonable understanding of computers knows false.

                • +1

@Namesareapain: Exactly. Hence why I have called that out specifically.

  • Isn’t an m3 512 like $1900?

How is the performance of this compared to:

    • +2

Depends what you use it for. But that deal is openbox so that could mean a display model that's been button mashed for all you know. Hence the price.

    • +1

I got one from BPCtech. Perfect condition. 100% health battery and 5 cycles only. 99.9% new

      • Thanks, I reset it again, just in case.

  • A pro/air with 8GB RAM = PRO/AIR Lite ! Meh.

Why buy an iPad with non detachable keyboard?

    • This is an actual work device for office work. An Ipad is more of a toy for kids watching youtube and playing casual games, or some light web browsing.

  • +2

I bought a Samsung Series 9 laptop in 2012 and put 16gb ram and still use this laptop till this day.

    • +11

      That's a neat story.

    • +1

      How's the battery life?

      • Never used it without the power cable

        • +1

Huh, barely worth having a laptop. Thought about a desktop?

  • 256gb. Now the "Air" name is really starting to make sense.

i click in to see the ongoing "discussion" about 8G Ram… :)

  • +4

Should have 8GB in the title tbh

    • I think it's safe to assume in this price range.

  • +4

My real world experience with this exact unit (though I’ve only had it for a week) is that it’s very snappy, runs all basic apps I throw at it and is even capable enough to run Fusion360 and OnShape (even though that’s largely cloud based for heavy computational tasks). The 256gb wasn’t enough for me as I’ve got a 200gb HDD backup that previously lived on my 512gb MBP so I’ve had to migrate that off. It’s supremely light, silent (huge plus) and looks beautiful which for me personally is really important. It does what it sets out to do perfectly and if you need more ram for something (video editing? I don’t know), pay more and get an MBP or an air with more RAM.

Apple isn’t going to change anything, let’s move on.

  • +2

    256GB 8GB
might be enough for your kids, for six months.

Officeworks quickly matched JB with $2097 for the decently spec’d 16GB / 512GB M3 Macbook Air, then digidirect discounted to $2096, I price matched this at Officeworks to $1991, thats around $400 off RRP, not bad at all!

    • Only Midnight colour ? I want Silver

  • Got the same deal - 16GB / 512GB - Space Grey M3 for $1991.
