    Cool! What is it?

Overpriced accessory, IPS 60hz 1080p - kind of a joke given the PS Vita released with an OLED over a decade ago.
You could get a much cheaper ($50-100, e.g. gamesir, backbone) controller for your phone and use a wireless connection with PSPlay. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=psplay.grill.c…

      • +1

Wow, thanks for this, had no idea!

      • +13

It loooks much more comfortable to use than a mobile + controller accessory.

        • +8

I'm sure it is, but spending $300 on top of the $500-750 you already spent on the PS5, that's a huge ask from Sony given this does not run games on its own.
If they made it like Geforce Now capable of streaming PS+ anywhere (on the go), I wouldn't be so harsh.
Ultimately it's a sad cash grab by Sony, when fans have been asking for a successor to the PSP/Vita for years.

          • +4

@JTayzer: I’m a bit surprised this is an actual Sony product. It seems to niche to actually be worth making.
Its limit application makes it a low value for customers but it doesn’t seem cheap so I don’t think they’re making huge profits on each unit sold.

          • +1

@JTayzer: I actually used to think the same thing, but after researching the Portal for a while I think this is a pretty primitive attitude to have on use case. I agree the features are lacking, but for parents with kids, or couples with a partner that wants to watch TV it seems to be quite popular. Of course this is an echo chamber but the subreddit shows some of this. The WiiU failed but this small subsection of demographic loved it

The thing holding me back though is internet speed in public wifi/hotspots in Aus - since its a streaming device this is where our less than stellar internet in comparison to the rest of the world is highlighted. As another said though you can always just download PS Remote Play and test it, its exacty the same experience

        • +3

Backbone one works pretty well and comfortable. Its officially licenced by Sony as well. Over half the price, though not perfect either would prefer it over this with the price difference alone. Find it a joke the portal relies on soley on streaming through a PS5 and needs a internet connection at its price tag.

        • +3

          Gamesir G8 is next-level comfy.

          • +1

@seerious: This is the only comparable solution to the Portal.. Not the Backbone! People who think the Backbone is an acceptable solution has no idea what a telescopic controller should feel like.

            • +3

@Justin9mm: Cheaper than the Backbone as well, hall effect sticks, no reason to go with the Backbone over the Gamesir G8.

              • +2

@JTayzer: Agreed. I had the Backbone before the G8.. The Backbone is complete trash in comparison.

      • Ooof dang it 60hzz ayee

      • +4

        Don't forget the WiFi 5.

      • Does it still work like a normal controller? If you need a controller anyway then this is effectively $199 extra for the screen. If only it would let you play multiplayer on one console, with each person getting their own screen.

        • Nope, no direct connection to the console for some bizarre reason. Has to connect to your console over your home wifi.

      • +4

the portal is easily my most used device. I now play my ps5 10x more often than before

        • How’s the latency input lag?

I really want one of these as like you I think I’d play my PS5 10x more if I could play it in bed, while the partner is watching TV, etc

I have a really good UniFi network set up but I worry about the performance of something like this which is just streaming over the network and not doing anything itself.

          • @deadset: Just try it yourself with your phone/tablet and the official PS Remote Play app first. You can either pair a controller to your device with bluetooth or just plug it in via USB. Same exact experience as the Portal, possibly even better since your phone likely has an OLED screen. The Portal doesn't do anything different - it has no special hardware to make the connection to the console any better.

            • @MrFunSocks: I assumed this had some proprietary tech to reduce latency to the PS5? If not and it’s the same as remote play on iPhone/iPad/Mac, then that’s a good suggestion to test it.

I already have my PS5 connected via WiFi and can’t run Ethernet to it unfortunately, so I don’t expect remote play to work well. I only play single player games though.

I don’t care at all about 120hz, I have a hdmi 2.1 120hz 4K tv and it just enables “balanced” mode in games (fidelity @ 40hz, instead of 30). I’ve only ever had one game that actually supported 120 and that’s coz the graphics weren’t demanding. No first party or AAA game comes close to 120.

If the portal was OLED I’d have bought it at launch, old school LCD is putting me off. Looking at my old switch screen vs OLED switch the difference is mind blowing.

I’d never wanna play PS5 games remotely on my iPhone 15 Pro Max, I like to use my phones/tablets/macs strictly for productive and switch and PS5 for gaming. The battery barely lasts as it is, I wouldn’t wanna cook my phone and drain the battery in an hour and just destroy the battery health on a $2000+ phone.

Plus Elden Ring or Baldur’s Gate 3 on a tiny iPhone sized screen sounds borderline unplayable.

I want a separate larger screen with dualsense controllers built in to get the full PS5 experience. Basically I want a Switch OLED with DualSense controllers.

Those barebone game pad phone attachment things don’t appeal to me at for these reasons.

I think they really missed the mark by not putting an OLED on this.

      • +1

You wouldn’t really get the features of a DualSense, however, in the form factor of a horizontal handheld. You’d need a DualSense controller and a phone clip for that controller, and carrying them both isn’t very portable.

        • I'd argue that carrying a regular controller + a mobile phone clip is more doable than carrying this, since this is just a regular controller with a screen in the middle. The controller + phone clip takes up far less room than this.

          • @MrFunSocks: It's about the experience and feel, a screen this large attached to an actual Dualsense is completely different feel and experience. I have the Gamesir G8 and also the Powerwave controller mount + phone setup. It is decent and enjoyable enough for a portable experience but doesn't even compare to the experience of playing on the Portal.

            • @Justin9mm: Fair enough, I just don't see that the extra size and hassle of carrying this around would be worth it over a smaller but significantly better screen from most people's phones (OLED) + a better regular controller (Portal controller including the sticks is smaller than a regular controller + smaller sticks with less resistance) + much easier portability.

              • +1

@MrFunSocks: I just want the Nvidia Shield Portable’s form factor to come back as a phone clip. I’d really love a dust cover for the controller that doubles as a place to put your phone, so that you can fold your phone in to the controller as a lid.

                • +1

@FujinShu: Yeah it's pretty crazy that no one has thought to do that yet, especially for iphones since there are only 2 sizes and there are only 2 main controllers (xbox and PS). Might have to look on some 3D printing sites, surely someone has had that idea…..

              • @MrFunSocks: Well I guess everyone has their uses for it. I personally don't buy it for taking it out of the house, except I live interstate so when I go back home to stay with family, I would have something to use in my down time. For me it would be a device I can pick up and play in another room or outside the back in nice weather etc. I have a few nice places I can chill in the house I recently built where my PS5 isn't. I would argue that due to the size of a phone OLED screen, the Portal screen is still better, have you seen a portal in person and actually played it? I think you'll find the screen is impressive. It's just frustrating to play decent AAA games on a phone screen. I have a 6.7" OLED phone screen and it's still too small, also due to the aspect ratio not being 1:1 makes it worse. I think the Portal is an expensive and mostly unnecessary product for most.. But it's still damn nice to play and use.

      • +1

I just don't get the 60Hz criticism on a device like this. Where is the actually existing handheld device that can in practice play AAA games at 120Hz?

        • It's the fact that you can't run excellent lower-spec titles like Hades and Hollow Knight at 120hz (quite easy to get 120fps on the 780m for these sorts of titles). I'm not saying it's required to play them, but it makes the experience so much more fluid.

          • @JTayzer: OK that is a fair point

        • This doesn't play any games natively though. The PS5 supports 120hz, so why doesn't this since it's just streaming from the PS5?

          • +1

            @MrFunSocks:

so why doesn't this since it's just streaming from the PS5?

Because if it had a 120hz screen it would be more expensive, and people would still complain about the price.

          • @MrFunSocks: Bandwidth

      • Honestly, I've tried remote play on various devices & none of them work as well as this does, even on the same network.
IMNSHO this is a device for anyone with a partner or family who still wants to play their PS5 while the main screen is occupied.

        • -1

Results vary massively though, which defeats the whole point of this thing. This thing was hot trash for many reviewers who have 10x better network setups than the average person.

If this thing actually let you install apps on it (it runs android) I would probably buy one when it dropped another $100, and I don't even have a PS5.

      • +portal only works with ps5, gamesir/backbone works with ps4 (because ps4 supports remote play)

I got the gamesir g8 for $81 AUD from ebay deal, and its build quality feels great for the price and works fine!

  • +5

    Normally $329?

    • +3

      yep

      • +3

I appreciate this, however, $30 drop is hardly a ‘value’ worth saving for a devise such as the portal here.

Better off getting something like the Retroid Pocket 4 Pro for around the same price that would do the job of the portal + more.

        • +1

          Half the screen size though

          • @EitherWayUp: Yeah it is, and admittedly - it’s may not be as super comfy without the added grips accessory as well - but it’s usable outside of just streaming.

  • +12

I love mine, I call it the dad pad. It's a seamless experience that requires no tinkering and has great graphics and battery. It lets me put bub to bed and then slay demons next to him. Make sure you have good wifi though.

      • +14

        That’s what wifi is…

        • -8

Like ya know how quest airlink is thru wifi so

Like it's based of ur router Lan spec not intenernet like ur ISP speed shouldn't matter aye

          • +10

@AndrewMTG: Yes Internet speed doesn’t matter. But wifi does. You need good wifi, not good internet. They are not the same thing.

    • +1

My thoughts exactly. If I owned a PS5 I would 100% have one of these.

    • -2

      has great graphics

This doesn't have any graphics. It's streaming from the PS5.

      • Yep, it has PS5 graphics. It is a remote player… Come on mate.

        • So it has terrible graphics when the game has terrible graphics?

This thing doesn't have any graphics of it's own, that's my point - it makes no sense to comment on the graphics of it since it's just playing a video.

  • -4

Definitely not something I'd buy, but still a cool piece of tech. Kinda feels like it is a Nintendo Switch or a Steam Deck with more steps though lol

    • -1

It’s a Wii U but still with extra steps

      • +4

Worse than wii u as this is connection via wifi not directly to console.

        • Yep, hence the “extra steps”

          • +2

@FireRunner: The actual experience is worse though. The wii u gamepad has very minimal lag but with the portal it can be quite poor, even with great wifi you won't be able to match what's on screen.

            • +3

@Circly: The Wii U gamepad was so underrated in how incredibly lag free it was.

    • +3

What exactly makes you think it’s a cool piece of tech?

It’s literally a basic Android tablet with a controller attached, with Android locked down to run a single app for local streaming.

Nothing about that is impressive. I did the same thing with my Windows 8 tablet and my Xbox back in 2015. I’m sure it’s been possible on PlayStation too for nearly a decade.

      • +3

        Cool

  • +3

I tried this and didn't hate it

    • +5

Yeah, this. I got one out of curiosity but it's solved a massive problem for me.
Now, while the shite RomComs from Netflix are being played on the TV, I can enjoy them in peace while my wife games on this instead.

      • +4

        the plot twist

  • -3

Need an a decent ethernet connection to your PS5, otherwise it's a paperweight if you use wireless.

  • Saving $30…

    • Better yet, save $300 and don't buy this trash

    • +31

Yeah but my 2.5 year old daughter made up a song called “The Bum Show”, and you can’t put a price on that.

      • -5

@sw00p - Oh yes I can certainly put a price on that. I’m 43, my 40 year old ex wife who I’m still good friends with has a 3 year old (not mine), no thanks.

        • +7

          “You are not the father”

          • -5

@Mahogany Granger: Obviously not, it’s just not for me. My ex wife thinks I would be a good father though, much better than the biological father of her daughter… I have spent more time doing fatherly things with her daughter than her own father has.

            • +14

@[Deactivated]: Imagine coming on OzBargain to proudly announce you are a cuckold to everyone

              • -2

@choodi: I didn’t announce that at all. That’s a wild assumption, for you to jump straight to that conclusion perhaps you have trust issues in your own relationship. Her only daughter is a little over 3 years old, we broken up in mid 2017 and it had nothing to do with either of us cheating… We had different life goals, for example she wanted to go backpacking around the world quickly jumping from hotel/hostel to hotel/hostel for 1-2 years, leaving our jobs behind (she had a Government job to come back to, but I wouldn’t have had a job to come back to), and I didn’t want to do that.

                • +1

@[Deactivated]: Dude, you're parenting another man's child with none of the benefits of being in a relationship. That's the very definition of a cuckold…but tell us again how many PS5s and XBSXs your dad has bought you and how rich your dad is…did your dad show you how to get it done in the sack too?

                  • -2

@choodi: Again you’re full of ridiculous assumptions. Your definition of parenting is a strange one, and you’re certainly full of stupid immature misplaced insults… Clearly my financial situation bothers you for you to have mentioned it.

Nowhere did I say that I have taken on the parenting role of my ex wife’s daughter, I said that when I do spend a little time with them (when we go out for coffee or dinner to catch up for example) which certainly isn’t daily or weekly, that I am more of a father to her daughter than her own father is, meaning is he is a bad father.

        • +3

Bro, why not just have kids with your missus in the first place? Now you're babysitting with none of the rewards

          • -3

@fiend: Because as I have said I don’t want kids. I’m not sure how you have taken what I said as me babysitting her kid, as I have said we are still good friends, we sometimes spend some time together, for example we go for coffee or dinner to catch up, usually somewhere with a playground inside.

            • @[Deactivated]:

we are still good friends, we sometimes spend some time together, for example we go for coffee or dinner to catch up

I hope for you it’s also ‘under the sheets‘ friends as well.

              • @YoursTruly: Why? I’m not attracted to my ex wife that way anymore. As I have said we are just good friends, I don’t financially support her or her kid in any way, and I haven’t taken on the parenting role of her daughter. We don’t spend time together daily or weekly, we enjoy a good chat with each other every now and then, that’s it. Based on the responses in this thread the majority of people mustn’t get along with their ex wives or husbands, and they are bitter about how things ended, that’s not the case with us.

                • @[Deactivated]: Hmmm.

I am not sure why one would befriend with their ex just to hang and chat (especially when no kids are involved). After all, she’s an ex for a reason, and in your case it’s because you both want different things… unless she still wants to be filled-up good by you.

                  • @YoursTruly: Yes we both wanted different things out of life after spending 15 years together, however we still have a lot of things in common and many of the same interests that brought us together and what we connected over, which is what we chat about.

    • +22

      sir this is a Wendy's

    • +12

      Cool story bro

    • +8

So what you’re saying is “I don’t have kids, so for those reasons, I’m out”

      • +5

Leave the guy alone, bro wants to be a kid his whole life.

          • +1

@[Deactivated]: So what your saying is “Never say never”.

Anyways, from what I’ve seen, too many people have kids, who definately shouldn’t. Anyone can be a father. Takes someone special to be a dad.

You seem content with your current decision thus far. Good for you ol’chap.

            • @Mahogany Granger: True. At this point it would be an accident (which most pregnancies/kids are) that I have been careful to avoid so far, or perhaps I can’t have kids and just don’t know it.

Agreed. Plenty/far too many people have kids that probably shouldn’t. There are a lot of bad fathers out there (mothers too), however there are a lot to good fathers too (and mothers). Yes, I am content with my decision, sometimes I do think about what life would be like with kids and wonder whether I’ll think differently on my death bed, however I believe I’ve made the right decision, that’s best for me and the kid that I haven’t brought into the world.

              • +5

                @[Deactivated]:

I believe I’ve made the right decision

If it's any consolation - I do too.

            • +5

@Mahogany Granger: Yup… so content and at peace they feel the need to post about it and defend it on a bargain site…

              • -1

@Symbiotic: There was no defending my decision, I was merely having a conversation about it with a member. I originally commented as someone who owns other PlayStation products in a bargain thread for a handheld PlayStation why I have no need for the product, I mentioning not having kids because that’s one relevant reason, and so that anyone who read my comment fully understood. The real question is why do some people that have kids seem to get upset when someone mentions they don’t have and want kids, and they are happy?

              • @Symbiotic: Congratulations on having kids mate, you're a winner.

                • -1

@magic8ballgag: If that’s what society defines as being a winner then it’s little wonder that a lot of people out there who have kids aren’t winners. It’s like Chris Rock said in one of his standup shows “having kids is no big deal, even roaches have kids”.

                  • +3

@[Deactivated]: I guess my sarcasm wasn't deciphered on your end.

                    • @magic8ballgag: I thought you were you agreeing with me my friend, but I wasn’t 100% sure… I thought my comment/response to you was quite diplomatic, but perhaps I was wrong, and if so I apologise. Unfortunately that’s the problem with writing/text and commenting online, it can be easily misinterpreted, often smart people are willing to acknowledge this, however dumb people just regularly keep running with their argument even when they are wrong.

          • @[Deactivated]: Does your mum bring you chicken tendies too?

            • @choodi: Does your mum do half of your parenting for you and you regularly ask her to look after your kids so you have more time for yourself?
