    Cool! What is it?

    • +14

Overpriced accessory, IPS 60hz 1080p - kind of a joke given the PS Vita released with an OLED over a decade ago.
You could get a much cheaper ($50-100, e.g. gamesir, backbone) controller for your phone and use a wireless connection with PSPlay. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=psplay.grill.c…

      • +1

Wow, thanks for this, had no idea!

      • +4

It loooks much more comfortable to use than a mobile + controller accessory.

        • +2

I'm sure it is, but spending $300 on top of the $500-750 you already spent on the PS5, that's a huge ask from Sony given this does not run games on its own.
If they made it like Geforce Now capable of streaming PS+ anywhere (on the go), I wouldn't be so harsh.
Ultimately it's a sad cash grab by Sony, when fans have been asking for a successor to the PSP/Vita for years.

          • +2

@JTayzer: I’m a bit surprised this is an actual Sony product. It seems to niche to actually be worth making.
Its limit application makes it a low value for customers but it doesn’t seem cheap so I don’t think they’re making huge profits on each unit sold.

        • +1

Backbone one works pretty well and comfortable. Its officially licenced by Sony as well. Over half the price, though not perfect either would prefer it over this with the price difference alone. Find it a joke the portal relies on soley on streaming through a PS5 and needs a internet connection at its price tag.

        • Gamesir G8 is next-level comfy.

      • Ooof dang it 60hzz ayee

      • +1

        Don't forget the WiFi 5.

      • Does it still work like a normal controller? If you need a controller anyway then this is effectively $199 extra for the screen. If only it would let you play multiplayer on one console, with each person getting their own screen.

      • the portal is easily my most used device. I now play my ps5 10x more often than before

  • +4

    Normally $329?

    • +2

      yep

      • I appreciate this, however, $30 drop is hardly a ‘value’ worth saving for a devise such as the portal here.

Better off getting something like the Retroid Pocket 4 Pro for around the same price that would do the job of the portal + more.

I love mine, I call it the dad pad. It's a seamless experience that requires no tinkering and has great graphics and battery. It lets me put bub to bed and then slay demons next to him. Make sure you have good wifi though.

    • -6

Woudlnt it be thru local network connection tho

      • +6

        That’s what wifi is…

        • -3

Like ya know how quest airlink is thru wifi so

Like it's based of ur router Lan spec not intenernet like ur ISP speed shouldn't matter aye

          • +3

@AndrewMTG: Yes Internet speed doesn’t matter. But wifi does. You need good wifi, not good internet. They are not the same thing.

  • -4

Definitely not something I'd buy, but still a cool piece of tech. Kinda feels like it is a Nintendo Switch or a Steam Deck with more steps though lol

    • It’s a Wii U but still with extra steps

      • Worse than wii u as this is connection via wifi not directly to console.

    • +1

What exactly makes you think it’s a cool piece of tech?

It’s literally a basic Android tablet with a controller attached, with Android locked down to run a single app for local streaming.

Nothing about that is impressive. I did the same thing with my Windows 8 tablet and my Xbox back in 2015. I’m sure it’s been possible on PlayStation too for nearly a decade.

  • +2

I tried this and didn't hate it

  • -1

Need an a decent ethernet connection to your PS5, otherwise it's a paperweight if you use wireless.

  • Saving $30…

  • -5

Meh, I’ve got 2 PS5s and 2 Xbox Series X consoles in my home, my PSP provides all I need when I want to play games on a portable device, which has been never over the last decade, since my early 30s I haven’t had any desire to want to play games outside of my home. And by choice I don’t have kids to buy this for so I dodged a bullet there, that’s hundreds of thousands of dollars saved over my lifetime that I can spend on myself.

    • +15

Yeah but my 2.5 year old daughter made up a song called “The Bum Show”, and you can’t put a price on that.

      • -3

@sw00p - Oh yes I can certainly put a price on that. I’m 43, my 40 year old ex wife who I’m still good friends with has a 3 year old (not mine), no thanks.

        • +2

          “You are not the father”

          • @Mahogany Granger: Obviously not, it’s just not for me. My ex wife thinks I would be a good father though, much better than the biological father of her daughter… I have spent more time doing fatherly things with her daughter than her own father has.

    • +7

      sir this is a Wendy's

    • +7

      Cool story bro

    • +4

So what you’re saying is “I don’t have kids, so for those reasons, I’m out”

      • +1

Leave the guy alone, bro wants to be a kid his whole life.

        • -2

@bargainatoraah - I’m far beyond being a kid, and due to what I feel are smart decisions (and my retired at 58 father that has millions of dollars in savings, about half a million in shares, plus several properties, which I’m going to end up inheriting, agrees with… If you can avoid having kids, do it), I have more money and am enjoying my life more than what many average people have and are.

          • @Cevolution: So what your saying is “Never say never”.

Anyways, from what I’ve seen, too many people have kids, who definately shouldn’t. Anyone can be a father. Takes someone special to be a dad.

You seem content with your current decision thus far. Good for you ol’chap.

            • @Mahogany Granger: True. At this point it would be an accident (which most kids are) that I have been careful to avoid so far, or perhaps I can’t have kids and just don’t know it.

Agreed. Plenty/far too many people have kids that probably shouldn’t. There are a lot of bad fathers out there (mothers too), however there are a lot to good fathers too (and mothers). Yes, I am content with my decision, sometimes I do think about what life would be like with kids and wonder whether I’ll think differently on my death bed, however I believe I’ve made the right decision, that’s best for me and the kid that I haven’t brought into the world.

      • @Mahogany Granger - No. What I’m saying is that inside my home I have no need for this PlayStation device when I own other better options, and outside of my home, for instance when I’m on holiday, I’ve got better things to be doing than playing video games that I can do at home everyday, such as doing what I went on holiday for and enjoying different things to what I ordinarily do.

        • Wifi sucks when you’re on holidays anyway, so this product wasn’t made for that unfortunately. If it was a standalone offline machine, I’d be more inclined to depart from some hard earned currency and acquire it.

  • +1

So it's steam link/ moonlight except you have to pay $300 for a device to use it? Silly

  • +7

This is mainly aimed towards dads such as myself who need the flexibility to let the kids use the TV and/or to keep wife company in bed at night.
I also thought it was a bit niche at first, especially as I had remote play on ipad already, but this is a hundred times more comfortable and I actually use this more than the main TV set up now.

  • If you got the cash to spare it’s a really convenient way to play. Not the best value accessory though.

  • +1

I need PSVR2 PC adapter deal Sony.

I use chiaki4deck on my SD btw.

  • +1

This will be an expensive way to experience stick drift?

My last controller got it after a few months, but at least it didn't cost $300…

    • -1

Maybe just wash your hands after eating cheetos.

I have a launch console and no drift. Not even my launch switch has the so called problem.

  • the lowest price was $296(with JB perks 10% off) last month.

  • This is an amazing device. I thought I would just try it and return via Amazon but I found you can play pretty much any turn based RPG on a 5G connection. I do have a decent router at home as well(RAXE300) so I guess that plays a part. I pretty much finished unicorn overlord with my portal tethered to my phone in the CBD.

At home I can play beside my wife or let her use the TV while gaming.

    Definitely not for everyone though.

  • +1

I own one and it's a great device for people who work away from home a lot or have kids who take over your TVs (I don't do/have either but I bought it because I traded in a bunch of stuff at EB).

I'm currently in Europe on holidays and have used it 3-4 times without any issues (1 dropout)
Unfortunately, it's not a standalone device. Just needs decent WiFi (at least 25mbps) and the PS5 needs to be on Rest mode at home.

  • This device is amazing for those that like handheld type of gaming. Biggest screen in the biz and proper controller ergonomic.

And you get the full fat ps5 games due to it being a controller with a screen essentially.

Only shortcoming is it’s a single user device, you need to sign out, sign in to change - totally idiotic.

    • Legion Go is 8.8" so it's definitely not the biggest screen at 8".
I wouldn't call it full fat, more like skim PS5 games with the 60hz/1080p IPS cap.

  • Does this work on the Xbox switch as well? Might get one for my grand daughter for her graduation next year.
