  • Have had several Viofo A129 duo models installed and found them to be not the most reliable. Anyone had better experience with the newer A229 models?

    • I had one installed a few years ago… Was awesome for around 12 months then it would only record when I was parked & wouldn't record anything when I was driving… I'm not the most technical person but tried many things after googling the Hell Out Of it & watching YouTube videos but nothing

2 channel with hardwire kit showing as $265.25 on my Latitude 28 Degrees card. Thanks OP

  • For hardwiring, I'm worried about the car battery could run low after a few days of not driving.

    • +3

They generally all cut off if the battery voltage dips under a set value.

      Least the HK3 did.

    • Turn the camera off when you don't want it to record. That's what I do when parked at home.

It should auto turn off but I just prefer to know it's definitely not draining battery.

Saying that I did forget to turn it off once and after roughly 13hrs it was still recording. Time-lapse 5 second mode.

It turns off if the battery voltage drops below a certain level. I got is exact model and hardwire kit and had an auto-electrician install it on site for about $200. Needed a couple of fuse taps as well but so far it's been working very well. Haven't had to touch it and I can sometimes go a week or two without driving my car and it's never failed to start or show any signs of struggling.

    • You can turn off parking mode so the camera turns off when you turn off the car. alternatively the HK3 hardwire kit has 4 voltage cut-off presets to choose from of youre wanting to run parking mode

I got a bundle from ebay - included the Plus model + hardwire kit + CPL filter for a little over $300, was from an authorised reseller using ebay codes and discounted gift cards. Not the cheapest, but wanted it sooner for a new car and local warranty I felt would be better.

So far everything has been working flawlessly, no issues at all with it, has only been 1.5 weeks since installation however.

Edit: Another tip, I didn't need to buy the fuses, I put up a listing on Airtasker for the install and simply mentioned that I needed fuses. Auto electrician that came out had all the different types and installed for me. Cost was $200 all up, quite a few "handy man" types quoting to do the work, probably would have been fine but felt better going with an auto electrician who only does this sort of work.

    • Could you please DM the details of the guy you used?

      • +1

I would, but unfortunately you're out of luck - I happened to run into him about a week later and he's going on a long holiday and won't be back till early next year.

        My tips would be:
        - Put exact requirements up on Airtasker (e.g. for me it was need the install of front/rear cameras with hardwire kit and need fuses supplied).
        - Wait until you at least get 3-5 offers to do the work so you can compare offers.
—- I easily got multiple offers within 2 hours of it going up.
        - Look for someone who is an auto electrician, check the person's history to see the type of work they have done. Lots of people who put quotes in did all sorts of "handyman" type work.
—- Probably would have been okay, but I wanted someone who only really worked on automotive.
—- When I checked my guys history, everything was professional (reviews received, professional photos with descriptions of products installed/work performed).

  • Has anyone self installed a dash cam on modern Subarus with eyesight? Got a new outback recently am keen to install a dash cam myself but feels like it could be tricky

    • +1

google is your friend. There should be a DIY out there somewhere

    • +1

I guess it depends on how much your time is worth and whether you feel you can get it to look as good as a professional. Quotes for a professional install range from $150-$200 if that is within budget for you.

My advice is to simply pay for someone to do it after I did it myself on my first car and hired someone on the second. The auto electrician that did mine was really professional and did a really good job of tidying up cables, using parts he bought with him like zip ties, etc. in spaces hidden behind panels and also made sure it didn't interfere with air bags, etc.

    • My car with eyesight came with an additional eyesight manual. Make sure you abide by the no go zones on your windscreen.

    • This person did a recent post about installing the dash cam.

  • new viofo are being released soon

  • Hopefully more reliable than the A129 duo pro. I've had 3 and 2/3 failed in just 18 months.

  • Can anyone confirm if this one reads plates decently at night?

Just trying to compare to the 229 pro 4k one and seeing if that one is worth close to double the price?

  • Was waiting on this deal to be sub $200 but ended up getting a viofo t130 3ch off facebook market for $200(rrp 380)- installed my self.
