    eBay plus not required

  • is this cheaper than ali express?

    • +12

Much the same price, within a dollar or two. Going through eBay will give local stock though for a much quicker delivery.

  • +1

Finally got this one too. Yeah it has been cheaper on Aliexpress by a few dollars. But at this price it's better to buy like this. This will most likely arrive in one piece and won't have the box damaged as most Aliexpress ones seem to have due to being sent in just a white bag with no padding at all.

    • +3

They probably send them the same lack of padding when they eBay seller buys them from alibaba lol

      • +2

        Hahaha your probably right.

    • +1

My one from aliexpress came in multiple layers of bubble wrap - it was a huge package when the actual box is small.

      • Did you have any other items combined as well? I get multiple packages from Aliexpress and nearly every single one has has the same problem. There is the occasional well packaged item inside but not very often. They combine alot of my orders into one big package but again it's the same situation with alot of smaller bags inside a bigger one. I think it has to do with certian sellers tho not all. So ymmv.

20% off is working store wide… RG556 for $266 is pretty good
    or $240 for RG Cube

    • +4

I got my 556 for a bit less, but let me tell you, as someone who has a tonne of these things, and a Steam Deck, I use the 556 more than anything else and more than I thought I would. It's big, but it's juuuust small enough I can cart it around effortlessly and throw in the side of the car door, where the Steam Deck is quite cumbersome and no hope in hell of car dooring.

Speaker is a bit shit, but other than that, screen is fantastic, battery life is great, and emulation of PS2 era stuff is almost flawless (Superman Returns is so far the one game I've run into that played like shit, although I didn't care to change settings and just deleted it lol). Xbox (or PlayStation) remote play on the thing is fantastic, I have been using it in bed every night to clean up some achievements on the Xbox in the attic via remote play, runs like a dream.

      • may i ask you some questions please.

Is it easy to add emulation and roms? Im thinking of getting one but used to plug and play images at arcadepunks etc. Also have you tried the bluetooth for headphones as you state the speaker is crap.

        • +1

Not OP but the 556 runs on Android, so it's basically the same as an Android phone. You install emulators from the Play Store or from other APK sources and drag and drop your game roms into the device storage or an SD.

      • Yeah i have a Steamdeck which is great but i feel like i want a separate device for emulation. I setup my old android phone with one of those telescopic controllers from Gamesir which works pretty well but the screen size is lacking, and I bought a Miyoo Mini+ about a year ago but same sorta problem, screen is small and its not that comfy to use.

I just dunno if I can justify the price.

Are there any major gripes you have with it?

    • Man, is it worth waiting for another ~aU$210 deal or just biting the bullet. Seems like these will even be running more and more switch games in the future! Wish it was eligible for the 10% shopback cashback.

      • +3

I wouldn't hold too much hope for substantial switch emulation improvements on this SoC. But if you limit to mainly 2D games it's already pretty good at that.
        Here's a community compatibility guide

  • Reminds me of GBA

    • GBA SP the original wasn't this flip style.

      • I had the landscape single piece clear purple GBA.

      • It’s still a GBA lol it’s in the name

    • Shhhhh… don't tell nintendo

    • Man I totally missed this era and only just caught the DS Lite.

  • +1

Heads up, there’s been cases of these catching fire because the battery and CPU are too close together.

    • +8

Nah that's cos I got the high score on Frogger and I was LITERALLY on fire! 🔥🐸

      • +1

Nonsense, GLC has the unbroken record

        • So Skinnerr isn't master of his domain?

    • Yep alarmingly common from reddit reports

      • How many cases?

        • I haven't seen anyone with a report of fires. Think there was about 4 people who's devices have melted (which could have lead to a fire).

    • +4

finally, a step forward in immersion beyond controller rumble!

      • '… explosive gameplay!💣'

  • Got mine delivered yesterday. Gonna have to keep in a fire proof box or something…

    • How is it?

      • +1

Not bad. I don't love the feel of the silver color - I feel like maybe I should have gotten one of the transparent ones.
First impression was it felt a bit cheap. It's nice to use but has some build quality issues.

        • +1

I got the see thru black one, it's pretty sweet! Been hammering Tekken 3-6.

  • +1

Yeah reports of the hinges on these things cracking pretty quick & the batteries catching on fire too

    • wow… i watched many reviews weeks ago when they just got released and every reviewer were praising them.
      maybe too early :D

  • after watching [this] https://youtu.be/7pKTNIAZyGM?si=nhYiObyoysvhSHHM review

The format is like below (I’ve added a \ so it doesn’t auto convert the formatting) - put text in square brackets, url in bracket.

        Dylan is cool

Edit: OOOOOOH, you may have yet created a new jv with this formatting ability

    HODL for Ayaneo Pocket Evo

    • The Pocket Air was $399 on Catch a couple of weeks ago. Took all my willpower not to buy.

      • Evo might be $600. Should be great

  • +3

I love these little emulators, I have the Miyoo Mini Plus and its rad

  • +1

I think this one from Anbernic is very cool, and I'm not saying the one I'm linking is comparable in terms of what can and can't be played,

But if you're just fiending for the GBA SP style and don't want to blow nearly a hundred, here's the same sort of form factor on an emulator console from a few years back for a few bucks under half (before tax, so probably a couple bucks over 40 in reality). I have one and it's a ripper. Definitely not my best emulator, not even close, but I too missed my GBA SP and this was there. It plays all the obvious ones, GB/C/A, S/NES, Mega Drive, etc. and a decent amount of PS1 games (though don't buy it for PS1), as well as a few port jobs like Duke 3D, Quake 1 (and maybe 2, I forget), OutRun, Streets of Rage remake, Doom 1/2, etc. Also plays Java games pretty well which was a welcome surprise. Oh, and 3GP files run great, so I copied over my old Nokia 3310's collection of the first 20 something seasons of the Simpsons (I got the yellow one, it felt right)

    • Personally, I will suggest the r36s over this. It's not a clam shell, but a far better experience.

I have the v90 and I used it a fair bunch. But it feels like a toy compared to devices released nowadays.

      • I know bugger all about these emulators… Would you choose the r36 over the one in the original post? The price range works for me, but looking for something that's most "bang for buck" and least potential issues.

        • In terms of what you can play, the original post and the R36S are more or less identical… Question is would you rather save 30/40 odd bucks and get a couple of joysticks, or pay more to get a cool clamshell but no sticks?

      • Me too, love the R36S and for the price there's nothing close.

V90 was thrown up there specifically for the clamshell.

  • would love to buy one of these but I readlly don't know what to play on it.

    • +3

      Super Mario bros 3
      Sonic 1 and 2
      Tony hawk 1
Metroid (super if you only pick 1)
      Castlevania (particularly aria of sorrow)
      Final fantasy tactics advanced
      Etc

    • +4

Just be like me. Buy it, set it up with about 4000 games then play about 50 games for about 12 seconds at a time. I love my 40xx but I really need to focus on games I’ll play for more than a few seconds. :)

  • +1

I have one from previous eBay deal. While it's beautiful device and well made, this one has one fatal flaw.

The buttons require excessive force that will fatigue your arm and figures quickly plus the tactical response times for switches to bounce back.

I have just received powkiddy V10 and it's way superior in every way, build quality, price, dpad, buttons, 3:2 screen for gba

    • +1

I've got the V10 and the Kinhank k36 on the way too from Aliexpress too. I'm getting this one for the collection and cos i had a silver SP back in the day. Also had a purple GBA before that.

      • Same I still have a silver gba. You can notice the difference in buttons.

      • +1

Mate, my V10 arrived. Absolutely in love with it. Using it purely for GBA. Best.

    • V10 represent. Absolutely love it for GBA.

    • +1

Only reason I didn't go for a V10 was no wifi support :'(

  • What do you guys recommend for mostly ps1 emulator that wont break the bank?

      • Good choice.

Or otherwise if you can spend more (sub $300) Retroid Pocket 4 Pro

      • Yeah TrimUI goes pretty hard with CrossMix OS from what I've seen.

        • I think I like it more than the SP. Feels nicer to me. A bit less pocketable and less nostalgic though.

  • +3

How did op get $84.79 price? With the voucher mine comes down to AU $94.78 including postage

    • +1

Same for me. It’s a deal breaker for me.

      • Was same for me until I changed delivery address from regional to metro work address.

        • I tried them all. It's $9.9 delivery, regardless of regional, metro, business, house, apartment, parcel box (not accepted) or eparcel pickup.

  • Well after a few weeks of "research" I've just ordered this model. I couldn't decide between this and other devices that have a similar use (I'm trying to avoid doing what some people have done on other forums and end up with a collection of different models lol). Will see if this one does the job - otherwise I will end up buying another and another and another lol.

    • +1

That was me with the RG35XX. Now I have the RGB30, V10 and R36S. I also have the RG35V1, but I got that one for free. Now I am waiting for the TSP and X55 to hit rock bottom.

    • +1

Lol you are obviously talking about me here. As I've mentioned on so many posts previously I have like 20 something handhelds at this point. I started off my newer retro handheld collection with the Rg351v and have been getting more since. This includes the following Rg35xx, M17, R35s, 3x R36s, RGB30, Retroid Pocket 3+, Sf2000, Trimui Smartpro, X55 and going back i still have my couple of hacked Psps and modded 3DS just to name a few. I've also had others that i have bought and sold inbetween.

  • I wouldn't get this at that price. Pretty much the same price on AliExpress the last week.

I got the PowKiddy V10 and R36S for $38 each via a Super Deal on AliExpress and got their respective cases for $3 each. Bargain! All came in perfect condition.

This is pretty much RRP! Wait for it to go to $70 at least. Or get TSP MUCH better.

The clam shell design is fantastic but the hinge, issues with battery and poor material the shell is made out of isn't worth it. Russ from Retro Game Corps said his one is banged up from all the times he has taken it out. So you need a case.

    • Is there one emulator youd recommend in particular? I feel like id mostly play GBA or PS1 games. Potentially NDS.

      • Emulators are the software. Sounds like you want a recommendation on a device that runs emulators.

      • +1

Check out the RGB30, that's my go to for almost everything else PS1 and down. It will run PS1 X2 its resolution with some black bars, top and bottom. But since GBA was my fav system of my childhood, I wanted a dedicated GBA machine, if that sounds like you, V10.

  • Price has gone up by around $10 due to postage?

  • These guys are charging postage so won’t be buying

  • +1

Just got mine delivered yesterday. I installed MuOS and have been having a blast
