Seiko Prospex Tortoise SRPG15J8 or SRPG13J8 $299 Delivered @ Starbuy

440

Seiko Prospex Tortoise Land Edition Mens Stainless Steel Case and Nylon Strap Automatic Movement Watch SRPG15J8. Sapphire Crystal glass. Case size 42.4mm. This is a JDM model Made in Japan. The dial pictured above is the non-JDM model. This version has the MADE IN JAPAN on the dial.

Introducing a new watch design to the Prospex Land collection, the ‘Tortoise’ is inspired by the popular diving watch shape nicknamed by Seiko fans as the ‘Tortoise’ because of its shell-like profile. The JDM SRPG15J8 is often referred to as the "Tortoise" due to its distinctive case design, which has a somewhat rounded and thick appearance reminiscent of a tortoise's shell. This design element gives it a unique and recognizable look compared to more conventional watches.

The practical SRPG15J8 timepiece is powered by the 4R35 automatic calibre movement and includes a rotating compass bezel, crown at 4 o’clock for comfort with highly visible lumibrite on the dial and hands, easy to see in any light. The 4R35 movement is Automatic with manual winding and has an approximate power reserve of 41 hours. The movement has a hacking - stop second hand function and a Date display.

Prospex is a combination of the words ‘Professional’ and ‘Specifications.’ Seiko Prospex timepieces are designed to be practical, reliable and durable; to meet the high standards required in extreme environments for sports lovers and adventure seekers alike.

The Seiko Prospex Tortoise JDM SRPG15J8 features the Seiko Automatic and Manual winding hacking movement calibre 4R35 with an approximate power reserve of 41 hours and a daily time tolerance of +45 / -35 seconds. The case is 42.4mm x 11.7mm. The Lug to lug size is 45.2mm and the lug width is 20mm. This watch has a water resistance rating of 200m and an approximate weight of 90gm. Additional features include a Screw-down crown, screw case-back, a date function and a bi-directional compass bezel.

Nice find. I prefer the SRPG13J8 colourway as I think it fits the moniker 'Land Edition' better.

Today's Star Deal is another JDM, a Seiko 5 Sports SRPE65J8 for only $199.

    • +1

I thought you would post the Seiko Green DressKX but only 16 in stock now.

Here's the link to the Afterpay Day Sale.

        Afterpay Day Sale

Great price for the MTG G-Shock too. I thougnt I'd previously picked up the last one but it seems they have unearthed some more out the back.

    • Great price. Yeah I think that colourway (SRPG13J8) suits the land theme a lot more.
Blue/navy is more versatile for most other watches though (ie divers on bracelet).

    • Generally I'm not a fan of khaki / olive green watches, but this one isn't too bad. It is more of a desert scheme than military-inspired. The bezel too in the right light looks graduated which is a nice effect.

    • What do you think about today's deal? Citizen Eco-Drive CA0790-83E$229 del.

      • +1

You know what I'm going to say…
I think it would look good on you!

  • I'm a thinner bezel kind of guy. Prefer Orient watches.

    • +11

      Nice to know

    • +3

Dunno why you got negged. Everyone likes different watches for different reasons. Buy & wear what appeals to you.

      • -2

        No one asked

      • People can't handle opinions these days. God forbid someone sees my comment and discovers another great watch brand, like Orient.

        • +3

I am wearing my mako40 now ~ so happy :D

        • +3

Got a Mako 3 (or 2 or komasu) as well, great quality.
          was $305 on Amazon

        • People can't handle opinions these days.

Totally some of these idiots behave like freaking boomers. They can't take anything (pun intended :)

        • +2

Nothing to do with what we think of their opinion, the comment section is supposed for comments about the deal or item in the deal, their comment has nothing to do with either.

  • +4

So tempting to pull the trigger on another Seiko watch (I got a Turtle already haha). The green looks nice but this dark blue looks more versatile. Also are they rrp at $825 or more at some other retailer? Note that this is a JDM version with SAPPHIRE glass too. This seems like a really good value bargain!

    • +2

It's almost a steal at this price

  • +1

    Now THATS a bargain.

  • very nice , as @Chazzozz pointed out the 'land' edition is a nicer colourway imo

  • +1

Tortoise is cool but I think the King Turtle is cooler

  • +2

Great looking watch, except for that date window. Just leave it off the dial if it has to be jammed in there like that.

    • +1

Agree, now I can't unnoticed it.

    • LOL - it's a Japanese brand. They all seem to think a date complication is necessary, no matter what style or model. Rarely do you see one sans date. I personally like to have one, but I understand that not everyone is a fan.

    • it is discrete enough that you could ignore it, but then you'd have a blind date position which is also not idea.

At least it doesn't have day as well, so it's quicker to set.

    • I really love the design of the turtle and this tortoise but found the time loss on my turtle (4r36) just too annoying to have to remember to correct on a weekly basis. Not sure if the 4r35 has the same accuracy spec but for anyone interested, iirc I was losing about 5 min per week, which now that I look at it, is out of spec.
Might do an actual test and see if I can get it serviced under warranty.

      • +1

Yeah hit em up for warranty. Better if they are (typically) running 5-10s fast a day opposed to slow. Easy to pull the crown out for a few sec to adjust.

      • +1

FWIW, I've just had a watch serviced under warranty which is a microbrand running a Seiko NH35. The service agent noted the amplitude is only around 170° (this is how far around a 360° circle the balance wheel spins), which is quite low and explains why I've recently been losing at least 1/2 a minute per day or more. When I queried it their comment is that most movements in this range (and I would imagine the 4R35 is similar) could use a service from brand new, and that when properly running they should be 220° amplitude or better - and stay there for years. It will be interesting to see how my other NH35 watch (a Steel Dive SD1970) and my SRPK50J with a 4R35 stack up over time (both are less than a year old).

        • Was the service centre in your home city?

          • @chinaman: No, I’m in TAS and I had to send it to a watchmaker in Sydney.

            • @Chazzozz: just out of curiosity how much does it cost for a service of an affordable watch like this? Say the $300-$400 Seiko for example. And how often do you have to / should service it?

              • +1

@Ti94: The one I mentioned above I've only had for nearly three years so never had to service it. However, there is a watchmaker in Launceston with whom I've enquired and they advised it would be around $220 for a full service. I've read online that some people advocate just replacing the whole movement rather than servicing, so I guess it would come down to how much the watch means to you vs. it's actual monetary value. For me, this watch means a lot so I'll quite happily service it when the time comes despite the cost. If my Steel Dive SD1970 ever starts to fail, however, I'll likely look at buying a whole new watch entirely. I guess there's an argument for learning how to do it yourself for cheaper movement like the NH35 but that also involves buying the proper tools & equipment, too.

As for servicing intervals, it would depend on how well the watch is running, I guess. I recently shouted myself to a new Hamilton Khaki with their H-10 movement in it and when I asked about servicing I was told that 5-7 years should be sufficient, but that's definitely one worth keeping in good shape. Something like the Seiko or Miyota movements found in cheaper watches and microbrands I'd say run it until it's losing significant time (or stops altogether) and then consider getting it looked at.

      • +1

did you try to de-magentise it? I have a Turtle that has a 4r36 and was losing also too much time weekly. Then I bought a cheap de-magnetising tool off Amazon and de-magentise the watch for the first time. The time losing came from +-15s / day to +-5s / day. I now de-magentise the watch every couple of months or so.

        • That's interesting, I have not tried that. I'm going to take it to get services I think

        • Yeah good point! It's worth dropping past a Watchmaker and they can demagnetise it, have a sus and put on the time grapher

        • No, that's not what the problem was, the hairspring on the balance wheel was apparently tangled. I have a feeling it happened when I recently flew from Launceston to Melbourne and the airline wasn't too gentle with my luggage, and despite the watch being safely stored inside a cushioned watch roll it still received enough of a knock to cause the spring to get out of place.

Good point about demagnetising, though. Share a link to the one you purchased?

  • I prefer the round number markers (whatever they are called) to the rectangle ones, don't know why.

  • Guys which colour is better in your opinion?

    • Blue for me

    • I went the ivory one since I already have a blue turtle. Blue is more versatile but Ivory/green is more vintage looking imo :)

    • 'land' edition

  • can't resist… I copped. Will have to offload some other watch or even my Apple watch and go back to wearing a mechanical daily if that is what it takes :)

    • +3

      Will have to offload

nah just keep it and upgrade watch box storage

      • Just got another box, now need to add 5 watches lol

          • +1

@Jimothy Wongingtons: I am eyeing boderry sea turtle atm…been holding back for a few weeks now… going to Japan (will shop for watch) soon so I am trying not to get anymore watch… so hard to resist lol

            • @kolorijo: I've been looking at boderry voyager but have heard mixed reports about the movement

              • @Aldonis: I looked at that too (salmon dial) but I already had addiesdive my-h2 which is similar style with voyager hence I pivoted to sea turtle.

I heard the voyager bracelet can easily get scratch (I was thinking of getting the strap version because of that).

                • @kolorijo: I opted not to for a similar reason, I already have a bulova hack so i'm pretty set for field watches. I still want an oris propilot though

                  • @Aldonis: The cool green kermit?

                    • @kolorijo: 01 751 7761 4164-07 3 20 03LC, I don't have a spare 5 grand to drop on the kermit unfortunately

            • @kolorijo: I'm waiting for a Boderry Sea Turtle to be delivered. I purchased one with the Landmaster pre-sale but they're taking a long time to actually send it.

              • @Chazzozz: Nice, please share your thoughts when you get the sea turtle. Which colour are you getting?

I found the landmaster is not (yet) my cup of tea. Although I thought the same thing about diver watches before lol….and here I am wanting them

      • +1

        Problem solved haha.
The bloodyrippa boxes are cheap enough.

  • +1

    looking away from the screen.

    "I don't need another watch… I don't need another watch… I don't need another watch… "

hmmm… the blue or the green?

    • +1

get them both. 2 wrists 2 watches. they will look good one you :p

    • blue sold out

      • wow it's legit sold out, was staring at the cart trying to decide….. lol. Popular!

      • Now there is no conundrum left, get the green one :D

  • +1

The all black sports is also on special on the afterpay sale for $199

I'm kinda loving the all black.

love the SRPG15J8 but worried about the larger bezel on my smaller wrist.

    • +1

The all black is very sleek

    • +1

These are Tortoise. It’s smaller size than the Turtle, if you wanna avoid large watch. Large watches have its solid beauty though.

    • Wonder how the readability is IRL
Looks slick as hell though- love stealth looks

      • +1

I think it would look good on you :P.

It's pretty blacked out, no doubt average legibility but would be ok in some light/angles.
The first pic doesn't do it any favours but looks ok in the rest.

Would be worth checking out in real life for this one.

      • +1

In regards to readability i wonder if the minute/hour hand in more like the image in the first or second picture as there is a slight difference in the outlining whites brightness. If its more like the second picture i think it would add alot to the readability while the first just seems to 'blend' alot more. Its a slight difference but one i think could make a big perceivable variation in readability. Also you'll notice in the third picture the outlining white is not on one hand, which also makes a huge diff imo.

      • It's fine during the day but walking home from the station after work no chance of reading the time.

Is it weird to buy this one as I own the non JDM version?

        • +2

Nah I think it would look good on you.

        • Just look at your phone ha
          Should be alright though.

          • +1

@G-rig: i got one aswell so i'll report back on the readability when it arrives. Sigh time to upgrade the watch case.

          • @G-rig:

Just look at your phone ha

Good idea, I use the torch so I can read this at night

  • Great find - SRPG15J8 is mint but sold out now.

  • daily time tolerance of +45 / -35 seconds seems to be quite average.

    • It's pretty standard, and unlikely you'd get an example that bad (so don't worry).

You'll pay a fortune for high accuracy autos.

      • +1

        I have a 4R36 that gains 1.75 seconds a day. Couldn’t believe it.

        • +1

          Amazing luck of the draw

  • +1

2 LEFT for the GREEN one

    • +1

All gone now. Fun's over. :(

    • Hi rep, just curious why I tried to log in to SB but had to create an account again?
I had two purchases previously which are no longer visible on my account

      • Hi there. Please message us directly on [email protected] and we will have a look for you. The last few updates with our email platform have created a few issues with segmentation. Thanks

  • Wow. I missed the boat.
    All sold out. Very disappointed.

      See the comment above yours.

      • Yep, see that.
