Too big for my dainty wrists :(

    • +2

Unless they are really dainty it is still wearable. The lug-to-lug is very practical and the case bluge compared to the bezel diameter means it can appear deceptively smaller on the wrist. I'm about a 6.25 - 6.5 wrist and I don't have a problem with watches in the 44-46 size.

    • In my opinion, even 46mm is not too big for most men. Opinion as an Asian man, not too tall (just average) and not big body/hand. Sometimes I feel like I want to try bigger size than 46 mm …

We just need to adjust the link accordingly …

I have the Citizen Eco-Drive 43.5mm above as my first watch. On weekend I wear it along with my smartwatch as we have two hands ;-)

I'm surprised nobody put up the $499 Scream Speedmaster from yesterday.

    • +1

      But you could have, lol.

      • +1

It's not one I'm personally keen on so I usually won't post up in those cases.

It could be worth mentioning that as with previous SB friday deals, today's deal should persist over the weekend until monday morning, in case anyone wanted to check a similar model out in person before committing the cash.

    • Didn’t see, which scream speedmaster?

      • +2

        SFJ001P

          Cheers
Yeah not keen on that one haha crisis averted

          • @Jimothy Wongingtons: Never say never. Your taste might change in the (maybe near) future lol.

            That happened to me…. :D

            • +1

              @kolorijo: haha i agree… in truth when i first saw the sd1970 i was like..wow so chunky..i could never rock that…

fast forward to today where i will tell anyone who will listen about how insane the sd1970 is.
im literally wearing one right now, green on ss.

              thanks @WatchNerd

    • I saw that one and thought I'd leave it for someone else to post as it's not my style.

      • +1

i cant think of anyone in our little watch club that could say its their style…

though im sure @rosebank has 1 brand new still in box.

        • +1

        • +1

I don't mind the SFJ007 special edition, it just hasn't been discounted enough yet.

I am wearing the land tortoise that just got delivered yesterday from watch depot, even though I am working from home :D :D :D happiness…

    • +2

Does it look good on you? Please post a wrist shot?

    • i thought i saw a post the other day on aawf about WD had oversold the land tortorise and were offering a substitute on the rose gold one..actually looked pretty nice

      • +1

I had a look just now and it is nice with a retro vibe. Wouldn't mind to have one lol.

  • Same casing as sd1970?

  • +2

Turtles look much better on wrist compared to the listing photos, imo

    • +2

Agree, it looks better in real life definitely

  • Hi, what's the normal price?

    • +2

      rrp 950 according to google
600-650 looks to be the more 'normal price' though

  • These are great watches but the price seems a bit expensive for a rubber strap version. I bought the Australian limited edition with the pelican case and 2 straps cheaper than this.

    • Should have share it with us here… sad~

      • It was a long time ago. I think it was posted on here.

  • +3

Another cheaper option (different model), if anyone interested:

    • I love this colourway ! If I didn’t have 2 turtles already I would have definitely grabbed this.

I got this for $250, and finally modded it. Picture was taken inside a hospital with very bright lighting so the dial looks lighter

    @virhlpool - Just added the Citizen Eco-Drive 43.5mm BM7450-81L for $149 del.

10 left in stock. Edit - 7.30pm, 7 in stock.

    • Anything with leather/ non-metal belts?

  • Can I ask a slightly off topic question? Please excuse my ignorance.

I am getting a lot of advertisements on my instagram feed these days about modified Seiko’s, they have used NH mechanism in custom body kits with Sapphire crystal and typically Jubilee bracelets. Costs around $400-500. I feel they are not real but technically not fake as well, as they are AI using Seiko mechanical movement.

How do others feel about these watches?

  • Hey WatchNerd, are there any name-brand solar-powered digital watches with stainless steel case and band, at reasonable price?

I'm after a digital-only watch with a solar-recharged battery, and all I can find are watches with hands, or smartwatches with battery life of a couple of days.

    • +1

G-Shock is going to be your friend here. An almost endless list of models to choose fron, lots and lots of digital only options or digi-ana if one of those tickles your fancy.

      • Thanks, but I can't see what I'm looking for in that range. Of the three things I'm wanting (solar, stainless case, no hands) I can find plenty of models with two of those features, but none with all three.

It seems bizarre that there are loads of options to buy an analog+digital watch with stainless case and solar, but there are zero options without the "analog" part.

I should clarify that I'm looking for a watch under $200.

        • It depends too on what you mean by "stainless case". A lot of the g-shocks have a stainless case that is encased in resin so isn't a classic "silver" watch.

Example: GW-B5600 series. Fully digital, stainless case, tough solar, plus the other fruit like multiband radio reception and a million different timers and alarms and whatnot. Around the $200 mark or under. They will have resin bands though.

I think what really might fit your bill is the Casiotron reissue, except that it is well north of your $200 budget.

          • @Astronaut Joe: The resin bands aren't necessarily the problem if they can be replaced with a steel band. My problem with Casio is that they're held together by screws into plastic, and spring bars into plastic holes.

I'm an engineer, and to me that just screams "designed to fail in a decade". I've destroyed plastic watches before, the only ones that lasted were fully stainless steel. I also apparently have highly corrosive sweat, and corroded the back off a die-cast watch before I switched to stainless.

I'm half-tempted to buy an analog watch with a stainless-steel case, throw out the mechanism, and design my own innards for the features I'd like: Supercap power storage, built-in accelerometer so a double-tap will turn on the backlight, controlled by an MSP430 microcontroller with built-in capacitive touch sensing so mechanical buttons aren't needed. Those parts I can easily get. But finding a suitable LCD and solar cell, that's where it becomes difficult.

And of course the effort of finding the parts, buying them, putting them together and programming them, would take at least a couple of weeks of work. So I'd prefer to buy one!

I've been looking today, and found two that appear to meet my specs, but one was limited-edition and expensive, the other is REALLY expensive and way exceeds my specs:

            https://www.amazon.co.jp/-/en/TRN-50-2AJR-Sceptor-ANNIVERSAR…

            https://www.garmin.com/en-AU/p/608567

All I want is something like a Citizen eco-drive in stainless steel, but with a digital display (LCD, not OLED) instead of hands. Surely somebody makes such a watch for about $150?

Thanks for your suggestions, you've shown me watch types I hadn't previously encountered, and helped me solidify in my mind exactly what it is that I want. I don't think I'll get all the features of the DIY watch I described above, but a digital-only eco-drive with stainless case will be good enough, if I can find something like that.

          • @Astronaut Joe:

My problem with Casio is … spring bars into plastic holes.

            Looks like I was wrong.

A watch enthusiast has just introduced me to mod kits for Casio watches, like this one:
            https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005006702243750.html

With this mod, my objections to Casio's resin cases have been neutralised! My friend also recommended the GW-5600 series for me, in particular the GW-M5610U-1ER
