Westpac Altitude Qantas Black Credit Card: 90,000 Qantas Points with $6000 Spend in 120 Days, $225 1st Yr Fees Existing Customer

1340

Seems decent at the reduced annual fee of $150 for Westpac customers in the first year ($295 thereafter). There is also a $75 annual rewards program fee.

In terms of bonus points:

  • Earn 90,000 bonus points with $6,000 spend on eligible purchases within 120 days of approval.
  • Earn an additional 30,000 bonus points after the first eligible purchase during the second year.

I used an old Westpac login I had and was able to get the reduced annual fee even though I had no active bank or credit card account with them anymore.

If you've EVER had an account with westpac it should still exist, despite not have any active cards or transaction accounts in there

  • Can someone shed some light on what the application documentation requirements might be for a contractor working on their own ACN? Company being 20months old and GST registered.

Dont want to apply, be knocked back and be dinged with a credit check.

Those with a Westpac home loan package that haven't added in a card can get this promotion for just $75/year (to cover the QFF fee).

    • So effectively paying $150 for 120k points. Sign me up (well I already have and received my first tranche of points already)

      • Not really as you'd have to pay the package anyway for the homeloan

    • yea, and I feel like an id**t for not doing this earlier - been with westpac for like 2ish years now offset mortgage and all - just mainly feared credit cards coz I worked in debt collection lol

    • oh! Seems like a good deal in that case, but I couldn't find any info on that. Do they just cancel the 150$ fee afterwards?

    • Dang if this is legit, I would've jumped on it asap.

But I have an Altitude Rewards Black card with my home loan package currently. Sad.

Offer not available if you’ve held an Altitude Platinum or Altitude Black card with Altitude Rewards, Qantas or Velocity in the last 12 months. T&Cs apply.

      • So I moved across from CBA to WBC for my home loan last year. Seeing that they always had good deals with credit card sign ups, I took a gamble and asked for no card when signing up. After 6 months had passed I decided to apply as an existing WBC customer and they only charged the $75 QFF fee. I did confirm with the bank that my annual fee is waived while I have the loan and that I will be eligible for the additional 30k points next year as well.

        • Do you just apply online as normal or did you have to call them to waive the annual fee?

    • years ago i signed up to the westpac altitude black card for the signup bonus; and since i'm a HL package holder it was free for me.
They never gave me the points. When i asked about it they said that because I had the package; i get a different offer; that was fee free but no sign up bonus.

      Not sure if that's changed

  • Hi all, does anyone know if BOM cards applies to the 12 month wait period?

    • thinking the same thing for BankSA and St George

    • They are different brands. The T&Cs would spell out if they are excluded.

After a few years of churning QFF points (well over half a million points), I've just these last few weeks started looking to book a trip for my family mid next year.

The availability of Classic Rewards flights is DISGUSTING - there is basically nothing for almost all flights with Qantas or its partners. I can't believe how bad it really is trying to get some seats (a seat!) within a month either side of when I might like to travel, to airports anywhere near where I'm looking to go. Oh but you can pay 4-8x the normal points cost and get a "Rewards Plus" kick in the dick if you'd prefer, there's lots of availability of those!

I really wonder now whether it was worth my time and annual fees to collect these points. :(

Qantas wants to force people to use their "higher" reward tiers and reduce the pool of rewards points which is at record levels. They say they haven't reduced the number of Classic Rewards seats, but since the number of people enrolling & collecting points have skyrocketed in the last few years the nett effect is that it's extremely difficult to get a reward seat on any of the popular routes, even if you book a year out.

    • I was able to book flights to Tokyo from Sydney for my family of 4 all on classic rewards, 2 of them were even business seats shrug

      • What tier are you on and how long in advance you had to book it? Is the travel time during busy periods?

        • +1

          Bronze….about 2 months

      • Japan is one of the few destinations where there are actually some reward seats left, mainly due to availability of (cheap/reasonable) seats through many different airlines so supply matches/exceeds demand.

I'm currently looking at reward seats to Europe, using a few of the aggregator sites (seats.aero, expertflyer etc) and there are basically no classic reward seats available for QFF. Velocity is slightly better but even there you have to book within minutes of the seats becoming available or they'll be snapped up.

        • Just completed a Oneworld classic rewards business trip to Europe and Canada. Stringing that itinerary was tough, we did Sydney to Tokyo (Qantas) , then Tokyo to London (British airways). I'm sure there's other routes too but that one seemed relatively accessible (booked it 9 months out though lol)

book in advance. Sure, tomorrow flights dont have classic rewards

Part of me is sad that I only started using credit cards after 5 years of having a mortgage; noting I get one credit card with the annual fees waived for having a westpac mortgage.

But I'm at least glad I got the Altitude Qantas Black a few months ago - managed to get some help with family and b2bpay / gift cards etc to meet the min spend in like 1.5 months

Note: Credit cards are an awesome tool for saving thousands off your mortgage offset: https://bluefoxfinance.com.au/useful-information/credit-card…).

The 12 months restriction only applies to the reward program and not all Westpac rewards, is this correct?

I rang Westpac and confirmed that if you have held any Westpac card in any reward programs in the last 12 months.

  • +1

If you had the Westpac Velocity CC recently does that make you ineligible to receive the bonus points for the Qantas CC? Or are they two separate streams of cards?

    • +2

      Makes you ineligible.

  • What benefits for getting this card and paying almost $300 every year after?

    • Cheaper than Anz by $130 with the same amount of points

      • Not it's not

  • For a noob in terms of credit cards points just wanted to get some input!! I am thinking between this card and nab signature.

For a 3k monthly spend + 1 extra cardholder i am calculating just a difference of 9000 points. Nab gives me 126k points and this card will give me 117k.

So $70 fee difference and 9000 points difference which would be the better option? Generally how much is 9000 points worth??

  • I held a Westpac Altitude Qantas Platinum credit card about 6 months ago, is that ineligible for this offer?

    • +5

      Yes.

In the link for the deal description, the terms and conditions for the bonus points offer lists the following:

Existing Westpac customers who currently hold an Earth Classic, Earth Platinum, Earth Platinum Plus, Earth Black, Altitude Classic, Altitude Platinum or Altitude Black credit card, or who have held one in the last 12 months, are not eligible for this offer.

Westpac will categorise your Westpac Altitude Qantas Platinum credit card as Altitude Platinum and you will not receive any bonus points.

I actually had a recent issue where Westpac did not credit my bonus points for my current Altitude Platinum credit card within 12 weeks of when I thought I met the minimum spend criteria. When I called the Altitude Rewards team last week, they said their systems showed my previous Westpac Altitude Platinum credit card was closed less than 12 months before I opened my current Westpac Altitude Platinum credit card. However, after further investigation, it turned out their systems recorded the wrong closure date for my previous Westpac Altitude Platinum credit card, so the Altitude Rewards team had to manually issue me the missing bonus points.

      • +1

Thanks. Yes, surprisingly in 2024 the systems in place to get bonus points are sometimes down to fighting with CSR folks on chat.

  • So 90,000 QFF points will cost you $225? Not bad I think or am I missing something?

If it's helpful for anyone else, I've been working on updating my credit card comparison spreadsheet. Here's a link. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1JXM_gExZFRKzafSiuVY-…
I've allowed commenting in case anyone has any suggestions / corrections.

    A few notes;
*Yes I know there are websites that compare cards and show you a ranking depending on what you're after, but I couldn't see anything else out there that just listed all the useful bit of information to easily compare all things in one hit.
*This is correct at 8/8/24, but happy to update it if people want to comment in the sheet.
*The tickbox up the top activates the savings that can be had on the first/second year fees for things like existing customer, monthly spend met etc.
*I calculated the $ value (give or take a few dollars) in bonus sign up points, and placed that in a column. I then listed the first year fee (after any cashback offers) and the 2nd year fee. Cost after 2 years = first year + 2nd year + cashback - bonus points value. There is conditional formatting in a red to green gradient (white in the middle) to indicate ranking of some column. Eg In some cases it costs money (red shaded), in other cases it gains money (green shaded).
*Bonus point value is based off e-shopping gift cards, such as Woolworths. Yes I know bonus points will mostly likely be worth more in flight redemption, particularly in the case of direct frequent flyer points, but for me baselining it to this was the easiest way to compare. Plus, if you just want to see which one returns more points,
*AMEX excluded from my table on purpose (not widely enough accepted for me)
*Cards with no decent bonus points offer excluded

Lastly, I tried to put a filter on to make these columns sortable but it broke my formulas. If anyone can fix it, let me know.

  • I tried applying through an older account, got SMS for 2-factor verification but then received the 'unable to proceed' screen multiple times in both firefox and edge browsers.

  • Im 2x payslips into a new job, can someone tell me how many payslips they need?

    • How often do you get paid? 2 payslips mean nothing :)

Weekly, Fortnightly, Monthly, etc. Normally last 2 months of payslips some banks can ask for, however some banks also tend to reject applications if you have not been at the job 6 months, as for most companies you would be in probation during this time.

      • Thanks for the insight, I’m 2x months in.

  • Applied using old account, submitted payslips and approved all within 3 days

Good amount of points for the price but $6000 is a big oof unless you happen to have some big annual bills like home insurance/etc to pay.

    • +1

I wish our household spending was less than $1,500 a month!

      • Well doesn't matter for me, rejected with $100K income for the min $15K credit limit, no dependents, but two mortgages (one which is rented out still though). Maybe I've churned a bit too much for Westpac (or they remember me home loan churning through BankSA/St. George for their $4k mortgage cashbacks and CC deals in the past couple years…).

        • Yeah I found if you have two home loan it's harder to consistently get approvals. Without home loan every single bank seems to approve your.

  • +2

I got the 30k bonus points for the 2nd year without paying 2nd year fee.

I guess I got lucky, I opened my card on 15th August 2023 and made my last purchase on 1st August 2024 before paying out the balance and closing my card the next day. On my last statement I still received the 30,000 points hahaha

  • I, erroneously, applied for this card and was approved straightaway. It was supposed to be the Qantas rewards version. Called up and their rewards team told me to call back when the card arrives and they can help me switch over to Qantas whilst still honouring the Qantas points bonus.

Has anyone experienced this before and can advise if there would be any issues in getting the bonus points? I'm a bit worried they'll give me the Altitude points which I don't want or not provide any points at all.

    • How did you go with the switch? Did they make you top up the difference in the fee + the Qantas rewards program fee of $75/?

  • Got approved for this today. Strangely enough i got approved with only a $10,900 credit limit? Unsure why they let that slide; probably because i have multiple HL/Investment loans with them.

A far cry from the 24k black card i had with them a year ago. But points are points i guess.

    • I thought min limit is $15000?

      • There's some shenanigans they can pull in the background i believe.

When my wife had the altitude black; she only had a 12k limit somehow.
When i had the altitude black (non qantas) i had a 24k limit. But for whatever reason this time they gave me a 10.9k limit. No idea why or how.

    • How did you manage that?
Westpac are putting me through hell with them to be now declined 3 times. I also have multiple investment loans with them. The ladies in the branch cant figure out why they keep declining me

      • Same here i guess? I have HL & multiple investment loans with them.

It's possible that you're over leveraged and can't meet their servicablility for the amount of debt you have? 15k minimum is what they advertise; but it's clear that they can go under for some circumstances (wife previously had a 12k altitude black), and my new one is 10.9k. But you may be below even that minimum?

        • Very interesting. They only told me 15k minimum and they cant go less.

I need to find a credit card with a different lender that will allow me to get one. I want qantas points as the main thing. Any clues on which lender isnt as tough?

  • Has anyone been able to get this card whilst also holding the Westpac Altitude Qantas Platinum?

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/843939

I currently hold the Westpac Altitude Qantas Platinum and I wonder if they would give me the sign up bonus if I tell them I would like to cancel the Westpac Altitude Qantas Platinum and upgrade/switch to this one instead

  • I spent the 6k in the first month however I didn't get bonus points on my first statement, is this correct?

    • Hey did you get your bonus points in the end?

I also hit the 6k spend in the first month, but no bonus points on my statement

      • nup. nothing! ill have to call up

        • have you called them yet? I also hit the spend and got the first statement last week but no points so far.

A heads up for anyone intending to use the lounge passes, you need to register for it first and then use the card to purchase a Qantas product or service in order to receive them. I assumed the lounge passes would be automatically added to my Qantas account, but then read the fine print:

As a Westpac Altitude Black card cardholder earning Qantas Points, you are eligible for two Qantas Club Complimentary Invitations within each 12-month period of your anniversary registration date when you register your Altitude Black card via loungepass.altitudeblack.com.au and use your card in Australia to purchase selected Qantas products and services. Selected Qantas products and services are the following items purchased directly from Qantas: Qantas passenger flights (with a QF flight number), Qantas Frequent Flyer and Qantas Club membership joining and annual fees. Excludes Jetstar, Qantas Holidays, Qantas branded non-airfare products and any Qantas products and services not purchased directly from Qantas.

    • will $75 Qantas Rewards program fee make you eligible?

      • Of course not

Still seems ANZ QFF Black is still king for points per dollar.
Made a comparison for people looking for the best QFF points per dollar, with some notes, here

    • Loved your note, appreciated!

Note a very sly, yet important change of eligibility as of today:

"Existing Westpac customers who currently hold an Earth Classic, Earth Platinum, Earth Platinum Plus, Earth Black, Altitude Classic, Altitude Platinum or Altitude Black credit card, or who have held one in the last 24 months, are not eligible for this offer."

Applied a few weeks ago, but got approved finally today. Given the fine print line stating "you must apply and be approved for … between 31st October 2024 and 30th April 2025", I look forward to finding out if they honour the terms posted when I applied (12 months, instead of 24), given my last card with Westpac was closed about 14 months ago…

    • +1

This change sucks big time. NAB changed to 18 months and now Westpac 24 months…

      • 100% agree. Struggle to see how maintain Points Club Plus now, given NAB at 18 months, Westpac (+Bank of Melbourne/St.George/BankSA) at 24 months, and Amex cracking down on and rejecting card churners…

Time to buy a lot more 20x EDR points gift cards I guess..?

    • Oh shoot when did they update the T&Cs? I applied and approved on the 20th October.

    • Hopefully you’ll be OK. That same fine print line prior to the change states “… you must apply and be approved for … between 2nd November 2023 and 30th November 2024.”. Interesting how the T&C’s overlap by a month too.

    • Lucky i got approved a week prior! Exclusion period even longer than AMEX, insane

  • I just applied for this not realising the "wait period" between churning with Westpac has been increased to 24 months.
I closed an Altitude Platinum with Westpac back in December 2022, so I'm outside the wait period by 1 month.

Has anyone had experience asking Westpac to honour the bonus points even if you (only just) breach the wait period?

  • dang i just noticed their updated waiting period.
Fortunately for me i applied and got mine in sept. Points finally posted last week after meeting spend criteria by mid oct.

    • Did you get the bonus points with your usual statement date or off cycle a few weeks after you hit the 6k spend?

      • with the usual statement cycle; on the statement after hitting 6k, which was my 2nd statement.

        edit for clarity.

I spent about 4k on my first statement, during my second statement period i reached the 6k total spend by about the 1st week. But i didn't get points posted until that statement finalised; and they paid me my regular monthly points plus the bonus.
