We have a reolink outside our Snake Mountain evil hideout. It works well, hasnt been a year yet but no issues. Unsure how secure it is in regards to CCP accessing it to spy on us (before I get a neg, it is a thing) but function wise cant fault it. Its the Reolink TrackMix WiFi. Its under an eave so not getting direct rain.

Its not a political view, its a matter of fact we increasingly see IoT devices sending traffic back to China. There is no need for this and needs to be called out for others that do care about it.

        • Agree - shouldn't be getting sent anywhere we haven't asked for, china or otherwise.

    • Block them on your firewall mate :)

Note that the cameras in this bundle require you to use the NVR as they are the D800, and so do not have as much flexibility as the RLC-820A.

Reolink australia sells Rlk16-800D8-Afor $1109 including GST, isn’t that -A models are better than normal ones? And this comes with GST ?

      • Not entirely sure what the '-A' means in 'RLK16-800D8-A', but if you scroll to the bottom of your linked webpage to What's in the Box, it shows D800 and 'Please note: The cameras of the kit cannot work without the NVR.' It looks like all bundles on the Reolink website have '-A'

Apparently there is a V1 and V2 of the D800, with the V2 having smart detection, but that is listed as a feature on both the linked Amazon and Reolink bundles.

-A models are AI smart models which indicates version 2.

  • Can you completely offline this thing - can it work without an internet connection? I'm thinking, put it on its own vlan, then VPN in using tailscale or something to monitor it remotely if so desired.

I don't have it, but I'm pretty sure it works locally.

    • +1

      Yes, can be offline only

    • Absolutely. Mine is offline :)

  • I wish Reolink would make some rackmountable NVRs. At least rack shelves are a thing.

I have this and 16x cameras to the DVR, with two WD Purple 8TB HDDs, for a total of 16TB.

The standard 4TB HDD is not enough for even a week's worth of recording.

Thinking about it, I should have gone two 10TB HDDs.

My biggest gripe is the very narrow field of view of the Cameras. They are designed to be mounted higher and furthering away, but that defeats the purpose because you can't see $hit like a facial details and car number plates clearly in many cases.

    • Thanks for the insight, so is the 'gripe' something that can be overcome by simply buying some other brand camera system which is around the same price or something inherit to these sorts of cameras in general?

16 cameras. How big is your house?

    • +1

There are plenty of Reolink models with a different field of view or zoom function for better detail in circumstances that require it. Even one of the 12MP cams might give you better detail from high up. Here is a spreadsheet that might help https://imgur.com/YgKSDKI

    • Is there space for two hard drives internally? Or is it 1x sata inside and 1x esata externally

    • So it takes more than to 6tb max it says?

  • Is the dvr noisy? Looking to place a Swann system which is noisy as F …

    • +1

Don't get HiK Vision DVR then either, that'll drive you mad

    • I unplugged the cooling fans so the only noise I hear is from the HDDs clicking.

Cooling fans are not required when the DVR is stored at the room temperature and it isn't sitting inside a box.

    • I have a Reolink 16ch, the fan was very noisy. I replaced with a 40mm noctua fan as many others have and the difference is night and day, highly recommend

I've done this too and it's that quiet it's near the bedroom

  • So you need a electrician to install this?

    • +1

Yes, Need to run ethernet cables to each camera. Can be done but i think some states have laws regarding running ethernet.

    • No

    • +1

Due to it being PoE (power over ethernet), and running powered cabling through your walls/roof, then yes, you would need a sparky to install this if you're wanting to do it by the book.

That's not to say that people don't completely ignore that and just do it themselves.

      • Really?
I've been doing it legally for years in Victoria, just need open cablers registration and a security installers license.
        Not a sparkie btw.

        • My understanding and l might be wrong but you only need a sparkie if your running cables without termination and you need the sparkie to terminate the cable.

          • @pandadude: In Vic it’s definitely different.
Running cables and terminating need some form of Cablers registration to run cable, theres certain rules to be followed i.e. running in seperate conduit to electrical cable.
To mount and install the cameras security license.

Not sure about doing your own work but to run cable, terminate and mount/install camera needs the above 2, not sure if sparkie license covers the cat running or if reg is needed as we

Just a heads up if anyone wants to upgrade the HDD for more storage… it is NOT able to recognise nor format Hitachi 20TB drives.

On the other hand, it can definitely do 2x 16TB Seagate Exos. It reads and writes footage all the way back sucessfully. (I don't remember if I got the X16 or X18 model, but I reckon they should still both work).

      Excellent info thanks

  • I've installed a few HIK Vision NVRs/cameras. Would this be of similar quality? I understand the connection with PRC on both system.
