geez that's an old one. I would have picked it up if it were a Mini 5. The 4 does get quite sluggish.

    • +4

Yep. My mini 4 a bit laggy, Apple took it as trade in for $65 :(

  • +5

Oh dinosaur iPad mini, 32gb? Seriously? I'll get one if It's $50.

  • -1

    These will be painfully slow.

    • -2

Doing what? Too many browser tabs?
They are only 2GB, but my old iPhone worked fine with that.
      Maybe install an older IOS??

      • +1

        Maybe install an older IOS??

        Can't really do that

    • -2

It depends what you do. I find my iPad air 2 isn't much different than my m powered iPad pro at stuff like browsing ozbargain or running YouTube. Even many games run fine on these older iPads.

  • Damn that's not bad. I paid similar for a second hand mini 2 a couple years ago. I rarely use it but it still works fine so I assume this would too.

There are still no android tablets this small, light and with nice screens. Madness.

    • +2

Er. Plenty. Alldocube p50 pro when on sale (~$150) is fantastic.

Bought one of these a month ago and it’s great so far. Pretty much the same form factor as the latest iPad Mini and does everything that I need it to.

      • plenty
        shares one
        It's heavier.

I want an iPad mini 2 form factor, specs and weight but Android. I searched and searched unsuccessfully.

That being said, things might have changed in the last two years but last I checked it didn't seem to be a space that Android manufacturers were bothering with.

I have bad hands and wrists so it's gotta be light as possible.

It is what it is. Eh.

        • I should say it's the iPro 50 mini. It's 300g. Just do a bit of research - there are serious plenty of options.

          • +1

@CptnObvious: Yep, that’s the one I bought. Heavier than the iPad Mini 4 by mere grams.

          • @CptnObvious: What's the screen like?

          • @CptnObvious: Well there certainly wasn't before. For years.

Glad to see that's finally changed. That looks really good, dreadful name aside. Will keep my eye out for a deal on it.

            Cheers.

            • @Selenium: There's been the Lenovo Y700 in various generations for years too. Of course it's price more inline with the iPad mini. So not budget friendly like the alldocube.

              • @Ronnnie: Two years it seems. Guess it took me finally biting the bullet and buying into the Apple ecosystem for alternatives to finally start showing up. Figures.

But yeah I've never really thought of Lenovo as affordable, aside from their underpowered pieces of crap. So yeah, genuinely never heard of this one. Thanks.

      • Have you got a link to the deal? That’s a great price. I’d love to get one the next time they go on sale.

  • Is it capable of netflix and youtube? Or painfully slow?

    • +2

The issues you will run into sooner or later is app support. I know with the iPad air 2, it runs YouTube fine enough. But YouTube app is will undoubtedly only support newer versions of iOS. And then the only way to access YouTube is via browser.

I don't use Netflix. I use stremio, that's fine since it's only available through browser on iOS anyhow.

      • +3

Yep, YouTube eventually stops working on old OS's.

Source: my iPhone X previously running iOS 12 (long story)

Stuck on iPad OS 15 as well

    • Which isn't an entirely bad thing - iOS 15 supports jailbreaking and Trollstore which lets you do some nifty things, like installing third party apps without needing to sideload them (and other fun things, e.g. [1] [2] [3] [4])

  • Would this be good for a little home assistant screen?

    • Maybe not bad.. but remember no more OS updates from iOS 15, which means no more browser updates to webkit…
For the same money you can get an Android 11 or 12 tablet, both of which will still have browser updates installed from Google.

Ultimately Lovelace can be pretty intense depending on the cards you show, I'd want to ensure my browser is reasonably up to date.

    • Short answer - yes, it makes a fantastic ha display.
Longer answer in my comment somewhere below.

  • Yes this isn't worth the money imo. Old, running an old iOS version (~3 versions behind) with no future update support. Stuck an older version of iOS will lead to app incompatibly sooner rather than later. It needed to be a mini 5 at least to be a bargain. I wouldn't expect money for an old device like this, something to pass on for free to someone to use for multimedia, basic games and browsing. Itll be lucky to last another three years for those tasks.

FYI. The released date for Apple iPad Mini 4 was September 9, 2015, and officially discontinued on March 18, 2019.

the real question is, is it really worth it to buy something that was released almost a decade ago?

    • When I read 2015; hmmm that’s not bad.

      Then I I’m reminded that’s 10 years ago.

Yes the iPad is old. And I am old with it.

  • This is fine as a kids toy but not much else. Horrifically overpriced.

  • I dont use apple products. This ipad nearly converted me. And the price here is the lowest ive seen.
The ipad is no slower or more laggy than a 4 year old sony or samsung tv. Im currently using mine as a home assistant dash with a built in jellyfin iframe that is more than capable of playing the media it presents (tho i use it primarly as a remote for the big screen).
Prior to this, the original reason i got it, i was using it to play youtbe music videos on youtube music and aircasting to sonos. It performed flawlessly, and on the weekends proved it was capable of streaming music videos non stop for days without lag or a hiccup. The only reason i stopped, is because i decided to move to the 'free' youtube music alternative which i could only get working on android/chromeos.
One warning - a previous benefit of this device was that it didnt get the new sonos app. This is now a drawback since sonos has frustratingly stopped supporting most of features that were running fine in its old app. Otherwise grindr works, chrome works, jellyfin app works so does home assistant - though the latter two work better as web apps, which it also natively supports. Combine that with the fact that it really is the perfect size, it has a good battery, and that its cases and lightning accessories are currently selling for dirt cheap and you really have a winner for your smart home and your home media (especially if you are a sonos/chromecast/samsung tv user and can benefit from airplay) that you will likley find yourself taking with you when you leave home due to its compact size, sleek form and its high quality and durable build.
Buy this. You wont regret it.

You can always sideload youtube open source apps.

  • Does it run MS-DOS?
