  • How is anyone plan to use this phone? Genuine question.

    • +26

A work colleague got one for his young daughter for emergencies or pickups. He doesn't want her to get into smartphones yet so it makes sense.

        • +4

          You poor child

          • +2

@SupremeCombo: If like me, you came home to find your child bled out in the bath tub, maybe then you would understand.
My step daughter took her own life because of feelings of inadequacy amongst her peers.

@Captain Cheapskate: Okay mate and that sucks, but I think it's a little disingenuous to suggest there isn't more going on there than can be attributed to a kid having a crappy phone.

              • +4

@sob baget: the biggest things always start with the smallest idea's. once an idea is seeded, it begins to take root in the mind. if unmanaged and left to grow, it can become really bad…

                • +18

@Captain Cheapskate: Okay, and what about the growing body of scientific literature that pretty unambiguously suggests the harms correlated with smart device ownership among children and adolescents? Because that to me also sounds like something that, "if unmanaged and left to grow [could] become really bad"

I'm sorry for your loss mate, but tbh you sound like you need to be talking to a therapist, rather than projecting your unresolved trauma onto unsuspecting OzBargainers.

                  • +1

@sob baget: if you must know, social media and her body weight are also factors at play, but she opened up her heart to us the night before. We tried our very best to express our love for her, but as she said, it wasnt the lack of love from the family, just how she perceived the hate from everyone else.
You dont have to listen if you dont want to, but I thought i'd take the opportunity to share my experience and perhaps others could be a little wiser and benefit from my loss. maybe someone could save their child. who knows. worth a shot. whether you approve or not, I really dont give sh*t

        • The kid might have a tablet/laptop already, for use with school work, and maybe with socials too, that's enough technology.

      • Facebook still works on it though

    • +2

Hopefully make phone calls is a starter …..

    • +2

$10/year Amaysim plan for incoming calls. Good for dealers

      • Which plan is this on amaysim?

    • +2

I got one for my son with the Harvey Norman trade in option, put a $10 Dodo SIM in it, he takes it if he goes to a friends, stays with a relative etc. I didn't want the risk of him breaking a smartphone, losing one or the temptation of becoming addicted to one.

    • Mostly to hide under my mattress

    • Cheap burner phone for my legal activities.

    • In-laws' old 3g phones stop working from September 2024 onwards I believe. Got them a couple of these a while ago in preparation for this.

    • +2

      It's my hotline bling

    • Prob a perfect lil prison phone. Might need a good dose of lube to hide it.

Not a " burner " phone but replace those middle letters with "mm"'s and Bob's your favorite uncle.

      • Does it have any sharp edges which might hurt in inconvenient places? Asking for a friend.

    • +1

Going on holiday to Brazil, would like to have a phone there, would rather not handover my $1,000+ phone when I'm almost inevitably mugged.

Do we know when 4G network is due to be decommissioned in Australia

    • +7

Are you worried you’ll waste $23.08 LOL

      • +6

Money is not free. That’s I trade time for it on ozbargain.

      • +2

bad times , buddy .. good to be extra careful with money

      • This is 3 months of work in some countries….

        • It’s also an entree in others

    • Never

    • +2

when 4G network is due to be decommissioned

Likely not for a long time.

3G to 4G was an upgrade, as 4G is more efficient than 3G, and has a faster data rate as well. 5G, however, isn't an upgrade, it's something different. It's basically similar to 4G, but at a higher radio frequency, and with a few tweaks to make it more efficient for IOT devices with very low data requirements.

5G is faster than 4G, but that's simply because there are more frequencies available at higher frequencies than those used for 4G. If the telcos did stop using 4G and put 5G on those frequencies, it wouldn't actually be any faster.

The lower frequencies used by 4G are better at penetrating through walls, so 4G is better for a lot of in-building reception.

To use an analogy: the availability of 4WDs hasn't stopped people from buying smaller cars, utes, motorbikes or mini-vans. Likewise, 4G isn't going extinct any time soon.

      • Cheers, will wait for the next deal.

  • +1

Good burner phone. Easy to shut off internet access to make it a full dumb phone.

    • so you explain the burner phone concept to me?

    • +1

Even with Internet access enabled (and the settings changed so that it actually connects), it has so little memory that most sites won't load. That was my experience anyway.

    • +2

No such thing as a burner phone in Australia. You have to provide ID to get a mobile number.

      • +5

Wrong. Crims just register the service with stolen ID's. You think every dealer is using a phone registered in their name? Lols.

    • You can do that with any phone.

Edit: not sure about iPhones, apple might have deemed that option to be too complicated for its users.

  • So it says $73. What am i doing wrong?

    • +4

Did you add the code SAVE50 at the checkout??

      • +2

        I'm gonna guess not.

        • you would be incorrect

      • Yep

      • +1

Needed to be logged in and not guest checkout

        • Yep, there was a message when entering the code that you needed to be logged in for it to work.

  • +1

    Got one, thanks OP

    • +1

      What's a home phone? What's a home phone for?

  • Heads up - attempted to buy one and says sold out

    • Just bought one

    • +2

I tried to buy and while checking out, I got the message sold out. came here to post a comment confirming its sold out but saw a comment posted 3 seconds ago saying just bought. went back to my cart and tried again and order confirmed successfully.

  • +1

    Just purchased. Thanks.

  • +1

    Bought one, thanks!

  • +1

    Thanks, Bought one…

  • Sold Out

  • +1

20 units of stock were just added

    • +1

      Thanks just got one

      • Now OOS

  • +1

Thanks got 1 for a family who cant use a smart phone. His crappy tiny $50 Optus dumb phone is a nightmare to text from so hopefully this a bit easier .

  • Damn can’t use the code again lol 😂

  • +1

    Thanks

  • Multi-function mobile hotspot.

    • No hotspot.

  • -2

Aren't they still free at Hardly Normal when you bring your dead phone to swap?

    • I tried that in Bondi junction store, the guy said they sold out in 1min and was absolutely no stock! Pissed me off. Ad was still on tv and online and no trade ins available , so a big 🖕

  • OOS. Who bought more than 2????

  • +2

Most important thing, does it have snake.

  • Appears to be out of stock again.

This would have been a good replacement for the Optus $9 one I got, which turned out to not be worth it, this one would have allowed telstra network spare sims and dual sim.

  • -1

dont you all already have a drawer full of old smartphones where the apps and web accessibility are so completley nerfed that they can only be utilised for calls, SMS and mp3 playback?

    • I have a couple but might need to spend more than $23 to replace their batteries which last harldy an hour and even after having new battery they might have issues being so old.

      • -1

if your batteries are cooked, prob better off in the recycle bin than taking up valuable drawer space then… im talking bout functional old tech that falls in more of the planned obsolescence category!

    • +5

Most of those will not be able to call or SMS when all 3G networks are shut down

      • -1

those would be old, old….old smartphones…3G models now are pretty much mp3 players at best - best empty your drawers of those!

        • +1

We're talking old old old phones exactly.

        • Anything that isn't capable of 4G VoLTE will stop working, so a lot of 4G phones people will have around will also stop working.

  • the firmware on these new nokias are terrible no emojis, group messaging or image sending. i got an earlier model with kai os which has some emoji functionality. just save up for a kyocera phone they have all these features and apps.
