  • I'd rather invest in a better charger if I was going to use this many rechargeable bateries.

You couldnt buy just the batteries for this price - so consider the charger included free as well as the case and spacers…

i'm not 100%, because it doesn't specify…but from what others have said, this pack includes the eneloop smart charger (not the dumb charger like most eneloop packs).

yes, obviously not AS "smart" as a maha or la crosse charger, but probably fine for most (as long as it IS the smart charger, not the dumb one).

MQR05/MQR06 is the eneloop charger you want it to be (in case someone wants to check).

      • What is so bad about the dumb chargers? Do they overcharge and wreck the battery's?

        • +1

You are correct. Dumb chargers just try to force a fixed amount of energy into the battery. If that amount is more than the battery can accept, perhaps because the battery wasn't fully flat, the rest of the energy turns into heat, which damages the battery.

The usual result from overcharging a NiMh battery is that the heat causes a pressure build-up, which ruptures the battery's pressure-relief seal. This seal is usually near the positive pip of the battery. Some batteries show this as a "water stain" appearance at the top of the battery, or sometimes the insulator around the positive pip goes crumbly, or sometimes you can see blue "fuzz" near the positive pip. The fuzz is dried electrolyte.

Once the pressure-relief seal has ruptured, the battery will lose electrolyte, giving it lower capacity. Each time you charge it again, it loses more electrolyte, until the battery becomes unusable.

Fortunately, as someone else has posted, it appears this pack has a smart charger.

I got mine from amazon, NC-MQN06U
charged AAX4 for 7 hrs at work, took them home and charge for another hour before it indicate done.

        not timed(dumb) obviously I guess.

      • Ah cool, yeah, 06 definitely is a smart charger.

But note: the 06 is a two channel charger (not 4 independent channels like the 05, which the pack used to come with), which means you have to charge in pairs. As long as you run your batteries in sets then it should be OK.

  • Tempted to get it for the case alone. ;)

  • Nice! Thanks OP!

  • I'm an Eneloop noob looking at buying my first Eneloop batteries. Does this come with the smart or dumb charger?
Is the dumb charger really that bad for the general consumer?

    • Dumb chargers are usually labelled so because they employ a timer mechanism to charge cells rather than actually monitoring the charge of the cell which is how smart chargers do it. This can result in overcharging, a sure way to shorten the life of a cell.

Whether the Eneloop "dumb" chargers are this dumb I'm not sure, one would think they wouldn't be that bad considering the brilliant cells they're designed to take care of but who knows.

I bought the La Crosse BC-700 and have been very happy but this doesn't do much to answer your question.

      • Complete conjecture, but I reckon the eneloop dumb chargers are probably not TOO bad. They tend to charge at a pretty low rate (almost like a trickle charge), so they'll overcharge, but won't be AS bad as pumping them to death at a high charge. I'm sure they tried to balance minimising charge time and minimising overcharging as best they could using the simpler/cheaper termination method on their cheapest chargers.

But yeah, a smart charger will treat them better.

  • Would this need an AU adapter? If so are the ebay ones ok?

    • you will need an adapter. the grey almost triangular adapters on ebay works with charger.

      • Thanks mate, i'm assuming you mean this one: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/UK-US-EU-Universal-to-AU-AC-Power… I notice it doesn't have the protecting black band around the prongs, ie australian standards, will it still be ok? I think those black bands are just if you touch the prongs by accident when plugging in?

        • I notice it doesn't have the protecting black band around the prongs, ie australian standards.

Nothing that a bit of heat-shrink can't fix if you're worried about it.
