28 Degrees - New $8 Monthly Fee (Effective 17/9/24). Alternatives?

Hey all,

Just got an email about the 28 Degrees Mastercard introducing a new monthly card fee of $8 per month, which is quite steep as I only use it for travel and YouTube Argentina.

Any other recommendations for alternatives?

check your accounts after closing (in the app, go into Support and tick on "Show closed accounts" toggle). I was just reviewing it and noticed my balance was negative. I got a "finance charge credit adjustment" after closing the account (I'm not sure from what). They didn't notify me and not sure they would have done anything about it either. I was able to request a refund in the app.

Phoned Latitude to chase up my closure request.

You position in queue is 205!

    • Ouch

    • Yep and the time estimate they give you is hilariously wrong but persevere because the payoff is not having to give the leeches any more money.

      • Yep and the time estimate they give you is hilariously wrong

i had "you're 48th in the queue, estimated wait time is 16mins.". So I'm expecting "hello, hello, <click>"

    • Farking ridiculous. I'm 275 in the queue. 45 min wait. Just found out you can cancel via the app so I've just done that.

  • Aussie living in Europe here, I have 28D, as well as EU Revolut and EU Wise. I see that Revolut is also available in Australia, is this not an option for some? Looks to be free, and EX rates are pretty good. Otherwise, Wise card is another good choice. Keen to know someone’s thoughts if they have access to either Revolut or Wise in Aus? Should be free with a virtual card. very handy :)

    • They are just debit cards with limitation - no earn interest, limit ATM withdrawal unless you pay a fee.

I have both but always use either Macquarie or Bankwest debit cards.

Had card since 2011, now after 15 min on phone the card is closed. Farewell.

15 min on phone the card is closed

This is the most shocking part of your comment

      • Submitted the form in the app nothing happened and accidentally made a purchase on the card. Called and sorted the closure very efficiently.

Heads-up: halfway through a Bendigo Bank application:

"Our online application system is currently unavailable - Please try again later or call us on 1300 BENDIGO (1300 236 344) 8am to 8pm (Monday - Friday), 9am to 4pm (Saturday-Sunday) local time."

It kept crashing as well during the application.

  • I would use a card from Wise or Revolut for travel. They are debit cards with instant reload.

I had latitude linked to my argentina youtube premium account. After trying many cards I succesfully switched to an UP debit card (leaving argentina address details in place). To get the UP card details simply install the UP app, register, then access virtual card details.

    • Thank you for sharing

    • +1

I swapped to my ubank spend account, and that also works.

      • did you have your vpn set to argentina when you updated it? i can't update mine with my ubank card.

    • +1

Just a reminder to those looking to sign up to UP bank or UBank, don’t forget to get a referral code and get some free $$ :)

Trying to close my account - I think I made final payment but my Credit Limit is $6k but the Available to spend balance is less meaning it won't let me close

"Your account balance is zero or in credit."

Is it meant to update in a few days or something after payment? Their payments system is such garbage I'll be so glad to be done with it

    • Same thing happened to me. 4 business days after paying off, I no longer got the message "Your account balance is zero etc" and I was able to close via the app yesterday. Today I got an email with the official letter indicating account is closed.

      • Ok I'll wait it out thanks

      • Oh wow ao better dont wait till last minute to cancel 17 sep isnt far

Being one of the lucky ones that somehow still has shoppers protection (I noticed their earlier email attempts this year asking me if 'this product was right for me' trying to get me to cancel). I've finally made a couple claims (on puffer jackets of course). I will do my darndest to make the most of this and take back as much as I can for those who can't. 1/3 of the way to making up the annual fee already wew.

    • +3

I received a call last week that I hit my lifetime claim 😩

      • Impressive, snake.

      • +2

Wow I mean at least you can cancel it and be satisfied now! I just got another 'is this product right for you?' email from latitude…suspicious timing. I wonder if they're going to renege on shoppers protection in the near future.

    • I have been wondering about this. How do people know if their card has shoppers protection???

      • It's kind of really difficult to tell, there's nothing on the website. It says that it should say on your statement but I can't spot it. If you signed up in the last 4 years you probably don't have it. And you should have got several emails about it over the last year or so.

  • Will try calling again, but with phone queues over 30 minutes I’m hoping someone here might now.

What’s the go with refunding money AFTER the card has been closed?

Expecting some refunds from online purchases to come in over the next few weeks.

    Closed my 28 degrees card.

Went online to apply Bendigo, could not verify my ID, so had to go to a branch. Only issue is, they can’t bring up my application I did online, so I had to physically fill out a paper application (was during work lunch so rushed through it), didn’t get an application number to follow up, so I have no idea where it’s up to.

So then I went online Bankwest to apply, got rejected. Boo

Went to NAB branch since there’s one close to my work, there’s the debit card but there’s a $10 per month fee so I said no thanks.

Finally went online and applied for Macquarie debit, fast and easy, opened an account within 5 mins, so now just waiting for a physical card to be sent to my address.

  • So after applying for the Bendigo Ready CC on 9/8, I FINALLY got approved for it today! Can anyone confirm that this card actually works for YT Argentina?

    • how'd you go? does it work?

      • It allowed me to add my Bendigo Ready card into Google Wallet. I added it as a secondary card, then removed my 28 Degrees. I will have to wait until next month to see if the payment actually goes through. Also, I made the change while I had my VPN set to Argentina. Not sure if that's required, but I thought it would help.

But after 16 years, I bid farewell to my 28 Degrees card this morning. I got it back when it was known as the Wizard Clear Advantage 28 Degrees card and got me through a lot, especially that period around 2011-12 when we were at parity with the US dollar. Bought a lot of stuff from eBay US with it!

CONFIRMED! The Bendigo Bank Ready credit card WORKS with YouTube Argentina. My payment successfully went through over the weekend!

  • Is Bankwest or Bendigo zero international card better for application process? Which one approves faster?

    • Bendigo is slow. Takes several weeks minimum.

      • +1

mine took just over a week to be approved

        • For me, it's 2 weeks over. I was told to wait for a month for the outcome.

    • See my post above. It took nearly a month to get approved with Bendigo!

  • +2

I wonder how the people working at latitude and who orchestrated this are thinking this go down. So they wanted to lose most of their customer base.. and exactly that is occurring. I wonder if the quantity of customers leaving is in line with their expectations.

    • +1

According to their latest results, they have approx 340K credit cards, which excludes Go & Gem cards &. DJ’s card. Gather most of the 340k are 28 degree cards. At $8 a month, that’s $2.72M per month so not huge revenue compared to pissing off so many cardholders

I finally closed my account. I paid using the Bank account to avoid BPAY fee.
It took 1-2 business days to verify the bank account and then 4 days before they cleared it and allowed me to close the account. I closed the account via app to avoid some of the delays previously talked about.
I would definitely not leave this till the last minute if you wish to avoid the new fee on Sep 17

  • An hour after lodging a price protection claim "Is this product still right for you?" hahaha

  • After giving what felt like a great deal of personal (financial) detail, my retired wife (Who hasn't had a CC in her name for two decades ) was approved for an ING CC this morning.
Have now sent a dear John to 28degrees :-))

  • On hold music actually stops to say " Are you calling about closing your account? You can do this via our app."

Lol - they must be getting smashed with cancellations. Great to see. Id love to have been a fly on the wall where the $8 monthy fee was dicussed at Latitude. They probably assumed small number of cancellations but mostly lazy customers who would put up with long waits and give up cancelling.

  • Got rejected by Bendigo bank… bummer

  • Applied 20/08, still waiting.

    • Me too. Applied on Aug 20th. Received 3 messages like others and still awaiting outcome.

  • Any good experience opening Bankwest free card?

  • +3

Just got a text saying that I'm getting 12 months of the fee waived off my card.

    • same. was going to close it after my bankwest card arrives but maybe i'll keep it for now

    • Me too! The only reason I haven't cancelled yet is because I have a pending promo (Spend $X in foreign currency to get $50 cash back) that I'm waiting for before I cancel. Guess too many people cancelled and their userbase has tanked, now they're panicking

  • Yep just got the same via email and text as well - 12 months waived

  • +1

I've just received a text message from them saying that they're waiving the monthly fee for 12 months.

They must've had a lot of people leaving, seems a bit late to notify people about this

  • Closed account yesterday. Got text today waiving fee for a year. 😂😂

Just received sms from 28 that "we're waiving 12 months of the monthly car fee on your latitude 28 global platium mastercard so you can enjoy more shpping in the Black Friday Sales.

    • I got that too. Glad i was not able to cancel it last week due to $5 still owing on it lot

Thanks to everyone that cancelled for your sacrifice

yep got the same SMS and emai, thank you to everyone who cancelled their cards for your sacrifice. Cancellations probably went beyond their anticipated forecast.

  • Hi Wally23

With the busy shopping season around the corner, we wanted to recognise you as a valued Latitude 28° Global Platinum Mastercard customer and waive your monthly credit card fee for a year - that's a saving of $96!

You don't need to do anything; it'll automatically be waived from your account.

And with no international transaction or currency conversion fees on purchases online or overseas, you can reward yourself by shopping online and finding great daily deals in the Black Friday sales!

  • I assume the rewards program isn't being paused, so now without the card fee, I wonder if it's now worth using the card to buy exactly $1000 each month, essentially getting 1% extra in value

Shop and be rewarded with the Latitude Rewards Program
Enjoy up to $120 worth of Latitude Rewards each year which you can redeem for e-gift cards from participating retailers when you spend $1,000 or more on eligible transactions every statement period for 12 months.

    • Good point. While not paying the monthly fee we still get the gift card if spending more than $1,000. I will give it a shot if this happens

  • They can get stuffed. Going to cancel ASAP.

Wow, just got an SMS saying this:

We're waiving 12 months of the monthly card fee on your Latitude 28° Global Platinum Mastercard so you can enjoy more shopping in the Black Friday sales!

    • I was going to cancel in a few days, but glad to also get this offer via SMS/email. Although I don't use it much since no points, but good for cashback offers and maybe the $10 gift card thing they have now. Will cancel in 12 months.

  • Merged from 28 degrees $8pm fee.

Hi, can you friendly folk tell me how you were notified about the 28degrees' card is going to have an $8 per month fee please.

I have received no notification, only read about it on here.

    Thank you.

    • It was via email. Mine went to the junk folder and i only found it after reading about the change here.

    • I got it through email as well.

      • What date did you get that email? I received the following email on 15 Aug 2024, but no communication prior:

We recently emailed you regarding changes to your Latitude 28 Degrees Global Platinum Mastercard credit card.

Whilst the content of the email was correct, the sender information showed 'CreditLine', instead of 'Latitude 28 Degrees Global Platinum Mastercard'. We apologise for any confusion this may have caused.

Further information can be found on our website FAQs here latitudefinancial.com.au/28degreeschanges.

        • 9 Aug was my email date

    Thank you Hellfire.
My husband has just phoned the 28degrees bank and they said they are waiving the fees as from today for the next twelve months for everyone and we should get an sms notification.

    • Or not as a fee landed on the account last night….some customers seem more equal than others?

  • No notification received about the fee waiver for me or my gf.

    • Wow, I thought they knew what they were doing all this time.. They've screwed the pooch!

    • I also haven't received any sms/email for this, will wait and see if that's indeed applicable for all of us. Thanks for sharing this info!

  • I was going to cancel, but was a bit slack about it. This morning, without prompting, got an email saying they are waiving the fee for 12 months for me. Those considering cancelling might like to wait until the last minute in case this is offered to them. Ymmv.

  • +2

I cancelled nearly 2 weeks ago, it's saved me a fortune so far. Before I was spending way too much on AliExpress, now I have to use my savings UBank account. All of a sudden, I don't need all that stuff when it comes out of my money.

  • I also have Youtube Premium Argentina. So far I've tried to swap payment using cards from ING, UBANK, REVOLUT, WISE but none of them work. All of them are Visa. I've tried with VPN as well but no luck. I keep getting error:" this card can't be added". Has anyone successfully swapped to an alternate payment method for Argentina?

    • +1

I was able to swap with a Up bank debit card.

      • Is it a Visa or Master?

        • +1

Up is a Mastercard debit card.

    • I was able to swap with my newly minted Bendigo Ready Mastercard

    • Same boat as you. Every card I've tried can't be added. Waiting on my Bendigo card to be approved to try that. If that doesn't work; doomed I guess.

  • I've had the card since 2011 and make occasional price protection claims yet have not received an email or text yet. Anybody similar to me received the 12 month offer?

    • +2

also have not received email or sms

  • held this card like beginning of time since introduce wizard clear advantage card by GE money. can't remember when but possible 2009 or earlier. so really really long.

I have checked all recent notices via email or even sms from latitude during last three months back to June emails. nothing mention about $8 per month from 17th Sept. The closest message is on 15th Aug when the email mention about new Latitude Reward program from 17th Sept which we here all know about now but the full email to the last dot have not mention about the $8 fee.

I don't know yet about this one. Seem overall latitude customer service responses ain't very accurate. Only way to confirm is to see the charge on your card. Will wait and see then contest if fee charged and close card.

Nothing related here but I have other similar experience with NAB VISA MINI 0.5% cashback $10/per month with no annual fee back. Using this card for years and years until NAB closed this product has changed to NAB Reward card currently a $195 annual fee. I thought of close the account but somehow held this over a year. No annual fee charge but also checked later with customer service this card will have no annual fee on the system.

  • Anyone know what is the earning period for the $1,000 spend for a gift card? Does it start from today (17th) or does it include the whole of the current statement period (which starts before 17th)?

Impossible to get a reply on this from their online "help".

    • I don’t know for sure, but I read it as including the whole of the statement period that 17th is in.

  • I got this email today from Bendigo after applying on 13th of August:

I find it interesting that it is on condition of closure of my latitude facility?? I provided details of my Latitude credit card details in my application and I am no where near capacity with credit.
Has anyone else had this kind of response from Bendigo?
I'll settle my Latitude account and provide Bendigo with the proof but thought it was a bit odd they would name them.
Gloves off in the world of zero fee credit card banking??!

This is simply your ability to service the loan.

If you max out the Latitude card, then you might not be able to repay the Bendigo card - this is their concern.

Credit cards are assessed as the maximum possible balance - if you have a $10K limit on your Latitude card, then that's assessed as a $10K debt even if your balance is zero.

    • Yes I got the same. I emailed them screenshot and confirmation that Latitude was closed and application was approved

  • I had the $8 fee charged on 18th September. Looks like it's not waiver might be targeted?

  • +2

Cautionary tale here, I was very quick to close my Latitude account after the fee was added. What I didn't take into account is I have recently moved jobs and Bendigo does not see me as serviceable. I should have done a serviceability test before cancelling and am a bit annoyed at myself for that. I did like the security of having a $0 transaction fee credit card but now I will just have to load up my own money before traveling overseas.

    • Whatever debit card you choose, make sure it's connected to an empty bank account that you only load up when you need it.

When your debit card is inevitably compromised, it's a massive pain in the ass when the scammers are emptying your main bank account, leaving you unable to pay your bills etc…

      • Thanks for the advice. At the moment I have the NAB replacement for Citi Bank and there is no cash sitting on that. I only move money to it when I need it 😊

    • Apply to bankwest.

    • I got rejected by Bendigo, but not for employment stability.

Bankwest was fine with my application. no insurance on purchases

For me this card will be for overseas/online purchasing safety. aliexpress, ebay, amazon
